I teach computers at my school. Even though my students create a couple of
PowerPoint projects, I do not use PowerPoint to present ideas or teach a new
concept. However, there is one assignment where we correct answers about the
history of computers which PowerPoint is used; primarily because using slides is
easy to have each question/answer separated in an organized fashion. I thought it
might be fun to create a follow up PowerPoint about the history of a computer;
beginning with the first ever computer and transition through the changes to
modern/present day computer then into the possibility of the future of a computer.
Y
 Y
@y main audience will be 7th and 8th grade students who are learning about the
basics of a computer, the parts that make it up and how those parts interact to make
the computer work properly. Since they are middle school students, I must prepare
for all personality types.

(provide overview upfront)
 (identify benefits) (value to whom/why)

(conclusion) (list alternatives)

If my students have a better grasp with all the changes that occurred to a computer,
they will have a better understanding of how a computer works. 1) They should be
able to identify with at least one change that occurred with the technology that
makes a computer or that makes a computer function. 2) They should be able to
have a solid prediction what the computer will be like in the future based upon the
changes they have seen.
Y

 YY
@y students do not know the history of a computer. They do not realize how that
could help them understand how a computer works, what is everyday
appliance/equipment uses the same or similar technology or what the possibilities
the computer could bring to our future.

After viewing the PowerPoint, the students should be able to identify the major
changes that have happened to a computer. Such as, but not limited to, speed, size,
storage capability, color, graphics.

%hen referencing the history of a computer it is important to begin at the very
beginning, with the abacus. The abacus was the first mechanical adding devise and

throughout history we, humans have always tried to improve what we have. The
passion for a faster, more capable adding machine was the driving force to develop
a computer.

Once the computer was developed, it went through various changes and
improvements to meet our needs. Such as, convenience decreased size, increased
storage capabilities, speed of basic functions all while decreasing the size of the
machine. See %
in the appendix for a list of the content
included in the presentation
Y
 Y
%ithin the presentation, I used quotes about the computer that were said before they
became a part of our daily life. I also compared the computer changes to an automobile
to get the message of how fast the changes to a computer occur. Both ideas were
interesting as well as thought provoking because their message is not common
knowledge.

However, I would begin this presentation with a hypothetical question, ´Imagine what
it would be like if there were no computersµ. @y students are on average 12 yrs old.
They have no idea what life is like without a computer or the technology that was
invented because of the computer. (I. E. video games)

  Y Y
The design sequence for my presentation follows the S.Co.R.E. model (Abela, 2008, pp.
75-87).
1.Y Situation ²(%hat are the )Changes that occurred to the development of a
computer

2.Y Conflict ² No appreciation for the technology used everyday

3.Y Resolution ² Presentation of evidence/discussion of changes and apply it to the

possibilities of the future.
4.Y Example ² what was the ´driveµ to build the first computer?

Using the S.Co.R.E. method keeps the presentation meaningful as well as keeps the
learner·s attention. (Abela, 2008 pg 79). I used quotes to break up the presentation. The
quotes were used to keep the learner·s interest. Too much information not only stifles
the interest but also the amount of information retained. @edina, 2008, pg 75-76). I
tried to make the quotes humorous because if the learner has an emotional attachment
to it they will be more likely to remember it. (@edina, 2008 82-83).

Y I used the hierarchy order by presenting information from past to present. (Duarte,
2008, pg 98) Putting it in this order allowed me to communicate the history
effectively. (Abela, 2008, 107-109)

There was a lot of information to get across in the presentation and images as well
as facts moved quickly. I thought it was best to listen to Duarte·s advice and use a
template. (Duarte 2008, 204-215) I wanted information to be consistent so the
reader didn·t have to guess where to look for the information. (Duarte, 2008 104)
