JEDDAH: There are about 8,000 buildings in Jeddah on the verge of collapse, according to informed sources.
This opens the door wide to accusations of our historic legacy being neglected, they say.
Jeddah lost two more historic buildings in the downtown Balad area when they were burned down Saturday night, bringing the total
number of ancient buildings lost to fires to 200.
Suspicions that the fires in the two historic buildings might be deliberate are also not a distant possibility," an informed source at the
municipality said.
According to the sources, the fire that burned down the two houses did not reach the historical Bait Naseef. They said eight fire
brigades were able to fight the blaze, preventing it from reaching other houses in the historic area.
According to the Civil Defense, the fire started at an apartment in the second floor of one of the two historic buildings before it
extended to the third floor and then to the other building.
"There were no deaths or injuries in the fire, which completely destroyed the two historic buildings as residents were vacated
beforehand," a spokesman said.
The Civil Defense believed that fire spread very quickly because of its sandalwood exterior. "The wooden windows also helped the
fire spread quickly," it added.
According to municipal sources, apart from the historic buildings there are about 8,000 buildings on the verge of collapse in Jeddah.
They said 3,000 of these houses were classed as critical and that their tenants should contact the municipality immediately.
They added that technical reports
were being made on the other 1,000 houses, which should also be evacuated without delay.
According to the sources, the Saudi Electricity Company has warned the owners of about 6,000 buildings in Makkah that the power
would be cut there to force occupants to find safer homes.
They said 11 of these houses were already demolished, 419 were under repair and technical reports were being compiled for the
maintenance of 530 others.

JEDDAH: Representatives from Unesco and Icomos the International Council on Monuments and Sites visited the historical
district of Jeddah Wednesday as the Kingdoms authorities seek to have the zone registered on the list of United Nations World
Heritage Sites.
Al-Hayat Arabic daily reported that the group, which comprised specialists in archaeological restoration and renovation, were given a
tour of the most prominent buildings by Ali Al-Ghabban, vice chairman of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA),
and were briefed on preservation and renovation work.
The Unesco and Icomos officials also took part in a two-day workshop involving representatives from the SCTA, the Makkah Emirs
Office, the Jeddah Mayoralty, municipality and Civil Defense, as well as the National Water Company and the ministries of Health,
Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Labor.
Al-Ghabban said that rapid efforts were being made under the orders of Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah and Chairman of
the High Committee for the Development of Historical Jeddah, to meet the requirements set by Unesco for the inclusion of the
district in its list of World Heritage Sites.
The aim goes beyond simply getting the district onto the list, Al-Ghabban said at the opening of the workshop.
We also want to develop the area and ensure that it is turned into a place hosting sites of cultural and economic interest and
activity that will secure its continued protection and care.

Sami Nawwar, President of the Historical District Municipality, said the visit by Unesco and Icomos also included meeting with the
Mayor of Jeddah, and he praised the concern of the Emir of Makkah and the Governor of Jeddah for the development of the zone.
Jeddahs Historic Area has gradually depleted in the number of buildings left standing over the last few decades, the most recent
loss occurring last Saturday night when a fire broke out at a house of historic interest, gutting the building and partially damaging a
neighboring site.
Muhammad Al-Amri, Director of the SCTAs Makkah office, said that after the fire the area has been neglected for decades.
We have lost a large number of historical buildings, he said. Only 375 now remain of the approximately 1,000 that existed 25
years ago.

JEDDAH: Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, who is also the chairman of the Supreme Committee to Promote the Historic Area in
Downtown Jeddah, has said damage caused to the area by the recent rains, including cracks to buildings, would be repaired.
Prince Khaled chaired a meeting of the committee late Wednesday to discuss plans to protect the historic area of Jeddah against the
hazards of rains and floods. The meeting was attended by Prince Sultan bin Salman, chairman of the Saudi Commission for Tourism
and Antiquities (SCTA), Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed, who is deputy chairman of the committee, Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu
Ras and others.
In a statement to the press after the meeting, Prince Sultan bin Salman said an urgent rescue plan to identify and remedy dangers
facing the historic area was approved.
He said under the plan, structures on the verge of collapse would be repaired and residents will be evacuated and shops closed until
the repair works were completed.
Prince Sultan said power and water would be cut from residents who refuse to vacate structures under threat. He said incentives will
be given to owners to take care of their buildings in the historic area.
Prince Khaled said the government was keen to support the project for protecting buildings and properties in downtown Jeddah
against rain and flood waters due to its importance.
He said the project will be jointly financed by the public and private sectors. The committee took a number of decisions, including
the appointment of a coordinator to expedite the project, he said.
According to Prince Sultan, obstacles impeding the development of the historic area included slackness by contractors to do their
work speedily.

Rawashin, the distinctive style

of heritage buildings in Jeddah

A distinctive feature of old buildings in the historical district in Jeddah is the rawashin,or projecting latticed windows adorned with

intricate wood works.

Rawashin, a kind of bay windows or oriels that give a markedly different look for the Hejazi architecture making the building
different from the Najdi style.
Jeddah being the gate way to the Holy City of Makkah has been serving over the many centuries as the meeting point of various
Muslim cultures notably of Arabs, Ottomans and Persians and helped to emerge as a blend of these cultures over centuries.
However the popularity of western architectural style and the difficulty to find experts in the classical Jeddah style are some of the
reasons that made the style gradually disappear.
Only an expert of exquisite taste and vast experience can undertake the intricate wood-woks, skylights and jalousies of the old
style.
However efforts are being made to preserve the style with special training program in the art of rawashin wood works.
President of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) Prince Sultan bin Salman has been interested in preserving
the Hijazi architectural style since 25 years even before he became SCTA chief, and used to appeal to local people and
establishments to play their role to preserve the heritage features of the old buildings in Jeddah, said Executive Director of the SCTA
in the Makkah province Muhammad Al-Amri.
Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Fasial also has been stressing the need to protect the Hijazi architecture.
As a result, a number of Saudi youths are currently receiving training on the Hijazi construction style including the art of the
rawashin making.
The word rawashin, plural of roshan, is originated from a Persian word meaning an elevated window which lets in plenty of light.
