Building a Resilient Network
Requirements
Install a new structured cabling

system in a multi-floor building using a fiber backbone and
UTP floor wiring. The new
configuration replaces a thick
Ethernet backbone and thin
Ethernet floor wiring. New
hubs are needed in the wiring
closets on the floors and in a
data center. On some floors,
space considerations dictate
the use of compact, stackable
hubs. This network will run
mission-critical applications.
LinkBuilder MSH Configuration

Highlights
This solution uses LinkBuilder MSH
hubs and LinkBuilder FMS II stackable hubs in the wiring closets linked
to two central LANplex 6004
switches. The fiber optic backbone
also provides inherent resilience and
immunity from noise.
To protect the mission-critical
applications, each LinkBuilder MSH
hub has a connection to each of the
LANplex switching hubs. One connection is designated the primary link,
while the other functions as a backup.
(Up to 16 Ethernet resilient link pairs
can be configured on a LinkBuilder
MSH hub.) The primary and secondary links are connected to separate
modules in the LinkBuilder MSH hubs

to protect the network against the failure of a single component.
The LinkBuilder MSH has other
resiliency features as well. Distributed
Repeater Architecture provides each
Ethernet module with its own repeater,
so a failure in one module cannot
bring down the others. And redundant
power supplies provide additional
protection. If one power supply fails,
the other takes over and an alert is
sent to the management station.

Traffic among users within the
same segment is filtered by the

network from a single hub view, even
moving modules from one segment to

Highlights
With powerful connectivity and
switching modules, the LinkBuilder
MSH hub can provide high-speed
FDDI floor concentration, as well
as floor-based switching between
Ethernet and FDDI LANs. Highperformance users get FDDI connections from the hub, while other users
keep their Ethernet links.
The FDDI RingBuilder module
creates an FDDI ring from multiple
FDDI fiber-optic concentrator modules within the LinkBuilder MSH hub.
FDDI-attached servers offer significant improvement in file access over
Ethernet server connections in highbandwidth application environments.
The LinkSwitch 1200 module
and the LinkSwitch 1200 expansion
module provide full-speed switching
between up to nine Ethernet segments
and FDDI. The LinkSwitch 1200
module can connect to one of the
internal FDDI backplanes, or accommodate 1 or 2 FDDI fiber MIC media

modules for external single-attached,
dual-attached, or dual-homed connections to the FDDI ring. The dual
homing feature provides additional
resilience by preventing the FDDI
ring from fragmenting if multiple
devices fail simultaneously.

LinkBuilder MSH
LinkBuilder MSH is a multi-services
hub that can support up to 10 managed Ethernet, 5 managed Token Ring,
or 3 managed FDDI workgroups over
diverse media types.
The LinkBuilder MSH offers outstanding reliability and fault tolerance.
Each Ethernet connectivity module
has its own repeater, so a failure in one
module cant bring down the others.
Automatic resilient links ensure reliability and maximize uptime, and all
connectivity modules and power
supplies are hot-swappable, including fans.
The Ethernet bridge module
provides the hub with affordable
segmentation to boost performance
on the floor. For high-speed floor
connectivity, FDDI concentrator
modules support FDDI using MIC
connectors and CDDI using RJ-45
connectors. FDDI RingBuilder modules build a single FDDI ring from
multiple FDDI concentrator modules.
In Token Ring LANs, the
LinkBuilder MSH features PhaseLocked Loop retiming for reliable signals over larger rings, and Zero Delay
Lockout and Advanced Distributed
Recovery Intelligence to isolate faulty
stations from the network.
The LinkBuilder MSH hub
includes integrated support for
Ethernet RMON network management. RMON agents and ASICs on
each connectivity module collect and
compile RMON data, providing powerful monitoring capabilities for every
segment on the network. Because
RMON intelligence is integrated into
the connectivity modules, RMON
functionality scales easily as your
network grows. An RMON module
is also available for Token Ring.
A single management module
manages the entire multi-technology
hub. Using 3Coms Distributed

Management Architecture, management functions are shared between the

management module and SmartAgent
management agents in the connectivity modules.
The hubs unique, high-speed passive bus can support up to 17 separate
services at data rates up to 155 Mbps
each. This technology-independent bus
will also handle 100 Mbps Ethernet
and Asynchronous Transfer Mode
(ATM) in the future, without the need
to upgrade the chassis or backplane.
The LinkBuilder MSH does offer
a full range of workgroup switching
options. The LinkSwitch 1200
Ethernet-to-FDDI switching module
is available now, letting you place
servers on an FDDI ring while users
remain in Ethernet workgroups on
the floor. Switching modules are
also planned for Ethernet-to-ATM,
100BASE-T Fast Ethernet, and Token
