The Advanced MAU module

does not count as a station.
The STP or UTP MAU module
counts as one station.
The STP or Fiber RingBuilder
module counts as three stations.
The maximum Level 5 UTP
cable lengths for the Advanced
MAU module are:
400 m lobes, 260 stations (4 Mbps)
200 m lobes, 260 stations (16 Mbps)

Solution 2: Managed Token Ring Connectivity

The LinkBuilder MSH Token Ring

modules provide an array of Token
Ring physical layer resilience features unmatched in the industry.
Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) per-port
retiming, Zero Delay Lockout (ZDL),
and jitter reduction ensure a clean
signal and prevent beaconing nodes.
These features ensure greater reliability across Token Ring networks,
support more devices over greater
distances, and ensure that devices do
not interrupt the network by inserting into the ring at the wrong speed.
This solution exploits the
LinkBuilder MSH hubs ability to
handle multiple Token Ring paths
running at 4 or 16 Mbps. The addition of a second RingBuilder

module allows the MAUs to be

divided into two Token Rings. The
Local Token Ring Bridge module
provides fully integrated bridging
between those ringsin this case,
between a 4 Mbps ring and the
16 Mbps imaging system ring.

Use the following rules to configure

the LinkBuilder MSH for Token Ring.

The maximum STP cable

lengths for the Advanced MAU
module are:
600 m lobes, 260 stations (4 Mbps)
300 m lobes, 260 stations (16 Mbps)
The maximum STP trunk cable

Solution 3:
Building a Resilient Network
Requirements

Solution 3: Building a Resilient Network

Install a new structured cabling

system in a multi-floor building using a fiber backbone and
UTP floor wiring. The new
configuration replaces a thick
Ethernet backbone and thin
Ethernet floor wiring. New
hubs are needed in the wiring
closets on the floors and in a
data center. On some floors,
space considerations dictate
the use of compact, stackable
hubs. This network will run
mission-critical applications.

LinkBuilder MSH Configuration

Highlights
This solution uses LinkBuilder MSH
hubs and LinkBuilder FMS II stackable hubs in the wiring closets linked
to two central LANplex 6004
switches. The fiber optic backbone
also provides inherent resilience and
immunity from noise.
To protect the mission-critical
applications, each LinkBuilder MSH
hub has a connection to each of the
LANplex switching hubs. One connection is designated the primary link,
while the other functions as a backup.
(Up to 16 Ethernet resilient link pairs
can be configured on a LinkBuilder
MSH hub.) The primary and secondary links are connected to separate

modules in the LinkBuilder MSH hubs

to protect the network against the failure of a single component.
The LinkBuilder MSH has other
resiliency features as well. Distributed
Repeater Architecture provides each
Ethernet module with its own repeater,
so a failure in one module cannot
bring down the others. And redundant
power supplies provide additional
protection. If one power supply fails,
the other takes over and an alert is
sent to the management station.

For smaller workgroups, or where

space is a concern, LinkBuilder
FMS II stackable hubs with the
Bridge Management Module using
Spanning Tree Algorithm (STA)
can provide redundant paths to the
LANplex switching hubs in the
data center.
A Redundant Power System
ensures constant power for up to
four SuperStack units. Additional
Redundant Power Systems can be
added if required. The system comprises two load-sharing bulk power
supplies fed by two independent AC
lines. In the event of a failure in one
of the supplies, an alarm is automati-

cally sent to the management console. The system also has redundant
fans and LED temperature indicators
to protect against failures caused by
overheating.

Solution 4:
Bridging and LAN Segmentation
Requirements

Subdivide a large Ethernet

network to cope with high traffic levels that are adversely
affecting performance. Provide
safeguards against unauthorized network access.

Solution 4: Bridging and LAN Segmentation

Relocate a computer-aided
design (CAD) department
requiring two separate network
segments to the same floor as a
department running NetWare.
LAN traffic on all three networks must remain separate,
while still allowing for interconnections between the departments and the fiber backbone.

Large Ethernet Network

Highlights
3Coms chassis-based LinkBuilder
MSH solution provides the high
degree of segmentation required by
this organization. The LinkBuilder
MSH 4-Port Ethernet Bridge Module
bridges the LAN segments across the
hubs three backplanes, effectively
tripling the total network bandwidth
from 10 Mbps to 30 Mbps. The
bridge module supports Spanning
Tree Algorithm (STA), adding to
the resiliency of the hub.
The LinkBuilder MSH bridge
module has extensive filtering capabilities, which help control network
traffic by isolating protocols and
ensuring that network segments are
only accessible by selected users.
3Coms patented LAN Security

Provide a cost-effective LAN

extension with full segmentation capabilities. Connect a
small segment of users to the
existing network.

Architecture (LSA) provides

advanced security features like Need
to Know, which ensures that only
authorized users receive sensitive
data, and Disconnect Unauthorized
Device, which can automatically
deny access to network intruders.
Traffic among users within the
same segment is filtered by the
bridge module, keeping unnecessary
traffic off the rest of the network.
With Transcend network management
software, you can configure the entire
network from a single hub view, even
moving modules from one segment to
another via software.
The ST Fiber Optic Transceiver
Interface module plugs into the bridge
module to provide connection with
the fiber optic building backbone.
The LinkBuilder MSH also provides
the same level of segmentation in a
coax, fiber, RJ-45, or mixed media
environment.

Requirements

Solution 5: LAN Switching and High-Speed Connectivity

Provide high-speed connections

to floor-based workgroups in
a large network with an FDDI
or ATM backbone. Servers are
distributed throughout the
building. Servers and highperformance workstations need
higher bandwidth than can be
obtained with current Ethernet
connections.

Chassis-Based High-Performance Workgroups

Highlights
With powerful connectivity and
switching modules, the LinkBuilder
MSH hub can provide high-speed
FDDI floor concentration, as well
as floor-based switching between
Ethernet and FDDI LANs. Highperformance users get FDDI connections from the hub, while other users
keep their Ethernet links.
The FDDI RingBuilder module
creates an FDDI ring from multiple
FDDI fiber-optic concentrator modules within the LinkBuilder MSH hub.
FDDI-attached servers offer significant improvement in file access over
Ethernet server connections in highbandwidth application environments.
The LinkSwitch 1200 module
and the LinkSwitch 1200 expansion
module provide full-speed switching
between up to nine Ethernet segments
and FDDI. The LinkSwitch 1200
module can connect to one of the

internal FDDI backplanes, or accommodate 1 or 2 FDDI fiber MIC media

modules for external single-attached,
dual-attached, or dual-homed connections to the FDDI ring. The dual
homing feature provides additional
resilience by preventing the FDDI
ring from fragmenting if multiple
devices fail simultaneously.

Solution 5: LAN Switching and High-Speed Connectivity

For switching in the SuperStack

environment, theres the LinkSwitch
family of switching hubs. Choose
from stackable Ethernet, FDDI, and
ATM switching units to segment floor
wiring and improve performance in
workgroups, or to extend more bandwidth to individual servers or workstations.

3Coms LinkSwitch family of switches

eliminate client/server bottlenecks
with fast, simple, low-cost, highly
manageable designs that have revolutionized workgroup switching.

Low CostThe switches deliver

high performance without the need
for expensive desktop or cabling
changes. They are priced for the
workgroup, making them affordable
for all workgroup applications,
including connecting individual
power users.
ManageabilityTranscend management gives you at-a-glance monitoring and comprehensive control of the
entire workgroupswitches, hubs,
and adapters. Management tools
combine a high degree of flexibility
with a common look and feel.
SuperStackEvery LinkSwitch
workgroup switch is part of 3Coms
SuperStack system, allowing you to
enhance connectivity, functionality,
and resilience by simply adding units
to the stack.
Fault ToleranceFor additional
uptime protection, you have the
option of using a Redundant Power
System.

LinkBuilder MSH
LinkBuilder MSH is a multi-services
hub that can support up to 10 managed Ethernet, 5 managed Token Ring,
or 3 managed FDDI workgroups over
diverse media types.
The LinkBuilder MSH offers outstanding reliability and fault tolerance.
Each Ethernet connectivity module
has its own repeater, so a failure in one
module cant bring down the others.
Automatic resilient links ensure reliability and maximize uptime, and all
connectivity modules and power
supplies are hot-swappable, including fans.
The Ethernet bridge module
provides the hub with affordable
segmentation to boost performance
on the floor. For high-speed floor
connectivity, FDDI concentrator
modules support FDDI using MIC
connectors and CDDI using RJ-45
connectors. FDDI RingBuilder modules build a single FDDI ring from
multiple FDDI concentrator modules.
In Token Ring LANs, the
LinkBuilder MSH features PhaseLocked Loop retiming for reliable signals over larger rings, and Zero Delay
Lockout and Advanced Distributed
Recovery Intelligence to isolate faulty
stations from the network.
The LinkBuilder MSH hub
includes integrated support for
Ethernet RMON network management. RMON agents and ASICs on
each connectivity module collect and
compile RMON data, providing powerful monitoring capabilities for every
segment on the network. Because
RMON intelligence is integrated into
the connectivity modules, RMON
functionality scales easily as your
network grows. An RMON module
is also available for Token Ring.
A single management module
manages the entire multi-technology
hub. Using 3Coms Distributed
14

LinkBuilder Hub Configuration Guide

Management Architecture, management functions are shared between the

management module and SmartAgent
management agents in the connectivity modules.
The hubs unique, high-speed passive bus can support up to 17 separate
services at data rates up to 155 Mbps
each. This technology-independent bus
will also handle 100 Mbps Ethernet
and Asynchronous Transfer Mode
(ATM) in the future, without the need
to upgrade the chassis or backplane.
The LinkBuilder MSH does offer
a full range of workgroup switching
options. The LinkSwitch 1200
Ethernet-to-FDDI switching module
is available now, letting you place
servers on an FDDI ring while users
remain in Ethernet workgroups on
the floor. Switching modules are
also planned for Ethernet-to-ATM,
100BASE-T Fast Ethernet, and Token
Ring connectivity.

Intelligent Switches
3Com switches enhance your networks performance by creating
microsegments that are interconnected using a high-speed switching
matrix. Microsegmenting means that
a switched node doesnt share bandwidth with other nodes, even when
they share the same portwhich
translates to dramatic increases in
performance.
3Com leads the industry in breadth
of switching offerings with a total of
three product families: LinkSwitch,

LinkSwitch Family

LANplex Family

LANplex, and CELLplex. This

broad choice of options ensures that
youll get precisely the switching
functionality you need.
Network technologies currently
supported by 3Com switches include
Ethernet, 100BASE-T Fast Ethernet,
Fiber Distributed Data Interface
(FDDI), and Asynchronous Transfer
Mode (ATM). Support for Token
Ring switching is also planned.

And you can manage every 3Com

switch with 3Coms Transcend integrated management applications.
3Coms LinkSwitch switches
make performance enhancements
easy at the workgroup level with
stackable convenience and plug-andplay simplicity. The LinkSwitch
family also lets you extend highspeed FDDI, Fast Ethernet, or ATM
pipes from Ethernet workgroups to a
server, eliminating desktop-to-server
bottlenecks.
The LANplex family of
workgroup/departmental and data
center switches provides peak performance and modular, scalable
connections for Ethernet and FDDI
networks. And the CELLplex family
uses powerful, state-of-the-art cell
switching technology to deliver
low-latency, high-throughput ATM
performance on the backbone or in
bandwidth-constrained departments.
3Com switches are powered by
custom-designed switching engines
based on sophisticated applicationspecific integrated circuits (ASICs).
These highly integrated ASICs
make switching fast, simple, and
economical. They also contribute
to a fault-tolerant architecture you
can trust with your mission-critical
applications.

3Coms Token Ring

Switching Strategy
High-speed, multimedia applications
demand ever-increasing levels of LAN
performance and traffic segmentation.
3Coms switching strategy focuses on
delivering high-speed switching where
it is needed on the network, from the
data center to the periphery.
The strategy protects network investment by providing a migration path for
high-speed technologies while preserving the organizations existing network
infrastructure.
During 1995, 3Com will announce a broad
range of Token Ring scalable switching
products for chassis and stackable configurations. The switching architecture
is based on the Token Ring Switching
Engine (TRSE) ASIC, the latest leadingedge integrated chip that enables
3Com to drive switching to new price/
performance levels.
Like the ISE-chip for the high-speed
Ethernet/FDDI LANplex switch product
line, the TRSE integrates advanced
switching functionality onto hardware
for a low-cost, high-speed switch solution. The resulting Token Ring switching
architecture features cut-through and
store-and-forward switching, source
route and transparent bridging, 802.1d
and IBM Spanning Tree support, flexible
virtual network configuration, and a
migration path to FDDI/ATM.

Transcend Network Management
Solutions
3Coms Transcend family of network
management applications solves the
challenges of configuring, troubleshooting, expanding, and securing
network resources for every device
in your networkincluding adapters,
hubs, switches, bridge/routers, and
remote access servers. Transcend products support a broad range of popular
management platforms: Microsoft
Windows, Sun Microsystems
SunNet Manager, HP OpenView,
IBMs NetView AIX and OS/2,
and Novells NMS. Transcend takes
management all the way down to
the desktop level, with hub-port-toadapter data correlation, PC asset
inventory and control, and the
ability to group devices according
to the managers priorities rather
than physical device connections.

Transcend Offers Two Levels

of Management

Transcend Enterprise Manager

activities, devices, and technologies
for a building or campus network.
Transcend WorkGroup Manager
supports local management for
Ethernet or Token Ring workgroups.
Transcend Features

Transcends support for todays

popular open platforms lets you
leverage your current network
management investment and
doesnt lock you into a singlevendor management solution.
Transcends common interface
across all device management
applications lets you integrate
administrative tasks while simplifying network coordination;
the software presents a common
set of metrics for network optimization and troubleshooting, and
with Virtual Grouping you can
group PCs in ways that optimize
network oversight and control.

Transcend applications match the

look and feel of your current platform, eliminating the learning
curve that usually accompanies
new applications; Transcend can
also be integrated with critical platform services like topology mapping, reporting, and event logging.
Transcend SmartAgent software,
built into 3Com manageable
devices, distributes management
tasks to make network management operations more efficient
and increase the power and flexibility of standard SNMP agents;
SmartAgent intelligence also
allows you to logically group
devices for monitoring and
control.
A set of Transcend common-task
tools provides consolidated management aimed at common activities
such as universal administration
of all bridging, management of
RMON alarms for diverse devices,
and remote software distribution
and configuration.
