eople are the foundation of any business. Both of the profiles in

this months issue of Cleaner discuss growth and the priorities
these business owners place on bringing the right people on board.
Both look at business growth through a similar lens, though
the companies are much different in size and scope. New York-based Pro Drain
is a two-man shop focused on serving high-end clientele. The Underground
Detective, which started as a Cincinnati plumbing contractors side business,
now has five offices across the U.S.
For T.J. Heckman, owner of Pro Drain Inc. in New York, the skill level
and professionalism of his technicians is a top concern because he depends
on the companys reputation to attract the kind of customers he wants. Ill
keep this company small long before I ever have technicians who do not fulfill

my vision, he says. What is the sense of having a bigger company and a

less-than-perfect name?
Heckman clearly defined his company goals at the outset. He wanted
a client base that would value a higher level of service, and he set his sights
on the wealthy neighborhoods of New Yorks Westchester County. Having
worked in the area for many years, he realized that the type of company he
wanted to build would appeal to the areas higher income clientele.
Heckmans approach has helped him grow a profitable customer base,
but its still just him and his lone technician handling every call.
The Underground Detective, on the other hand, has grown from
that small Cincinnati side business to a company with five locations and
20 employees. Still, quality of service and the skill and professionalism of
technicians is the biggest factor in the companys growth.
Were definitely about gradual growth, but thats because we like
to keep control on the quality of the product, says company president
Rob Harris.
New hires spend months in training, including extensive OSHA and
defensive-driver training, and then several more months riding along with
some of the companys more experienced technicians. Then the new employee
takes the lead but is still shadowed for a period of time to ensure that they
have a complete understanding of the companys procedures when tackling
a locating job.
Its a nine-month to yearlong process before theyre out there on their
own, Harris says.
The Underground Detective and Pro Drain are very different companies,
but they share a fundamental belief in making sure everyone who puts on their
uniforms represents their core values and upholds their standards. Theres
nothing new or novel about that philosophy, but making it a fundamental
part of your business plan and adhering to it requires just as much work as
any other part of your business. It can even hinder your growth in the short
term, but it sets up a foundation for your business and can pay big dividends
in the long term.
I hope these stories provide some insight and help you build or reinforce
your own foundation. At the very least, they can provide some perspective on
what has helped these contractors achieve their own views of success.
Enjoy this months issue. C

COVER STORY

TRAINING for

THE UNDERGROUND DETECTIVE STARTED AS A SIDE
VENTURE FOR A PLUMBING FIRM AND NOW EMPLOYS
20 PEOPLE AT FIVE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS

BY KYLE ROG E RS

18

Cleaner December 2015

IT CAN TAKE UP TO A YEAR BEFORE A NEW EMPLOYEE AT THE

UNDERGROUND DETECTIVE IS READY TO TAKE ON A JOB SOLO.
THATS BECAUSE PROVIDING SUPERB SERVICE IS THE TOP
PRIORITY FOR THE CINCINNATI-BASED UTILITY LOCATING FIRM.

ITS ALSO THE REASON THE BUSINESS HAS

GROWN SLOWLY YET STEADILY SINCE ITS
STARTUP MORE THAN TWO DECADES AGO.
Were not a fast-moving company, says Rob Harris,
company president. Were definitely about gradual growth,
but thats because we like to keep control on the quality of the
product. We take a long time to train our employees before we let
them run loose on their own. Utility locating is a hard business.
You can have all the pieces of equipment in the world and there
could still be a utility you might miss. We try to do everything we
can to find every utility for customers, and part of that is quality
control and making sure our employees are doing all the steps we
want them to do.
New employees begin with several months of training at the
home base in Cincinnati, which includes getting caught up on
various safety requirements.

Our safety training is very extensive, Harris says. We do a

lot of OSHA training and defensive-driver training. Theres not a
company out there that we cant get access to because of our safety
training.
That initial phase of training is followed by several more
months of a new hire riding along with some of the companys
more experienced technicians. Then the new employee takes the
lead but is still shadowed for a period of time to ensure that they
have a complete understanding of the companys procedures when
tackling a locating job.
Its a nine-month to yearlong process before theyre out there
on their own, Harris says.
FROM PLUMBING TO LOCATING
The approach has been profitable for The Underground
Detective. The company has grown from a small operation
servicing primarily residential customers in only Cincinnati to
its current status with four other locations in the country, 20
employees, and mostly commercial clientele.
Its fitting that this has been the recipe for success because
The Underground Detective began as an attempt to provide a
higher level of service just in a different business arena. The
company was officially founded in 1992, but began years earlier as
a side business for a Cincinnati plumbing company.
My dad was a plumber by trade and was working for one of
his good friends who owned a plumbing company, Harris says.

doing full time.
Harris joined the company in 1997. At the time, The
Underground Detective was still small (three employees) and
rarely worked outside of Cincinnati.
We were primarily residential, but started looking at
offering services commercially and just broadening the scope of
our work. Thats why I came on, to help continue to grow and
expand the services and see where we could
take them.

they knew it was broken somewhere, they couldnt figure
out exactly where to dig. So they found a sonde that you

there could still be a utility you might miss.

Rob Harris
The problem was they would show up in their
plumbing van and one plumber working for another didnt
look good, so they eventually got an unmarked van to use
for the locating jobs, Harris says.
Eventually there was enough work to allow the locating
to be separated as its own business venture.
They just kept getting more and more fellow plumbers
calling, Harris says. The attitude started as, Well just
run these locating jobs at the end of the day, but when they

The shift from residential to commercial
customers has been a natural part of the
companys growth.
Over the years, the price has come down on inspection
cameras and plumbers are able to get a hold of those a little
easier. Instead of just a handful of plumbers having a camera,
now pretty much all of them do. So that work kind of went away,
but weve picked up other aspects of the job, Harris says.
The environmental side of locating work is one area
in particular that has seen a lot of growth for the company.

FROM TIME CAPSULES

TO CEMETERIES
While utility locating may be The Underground
Detectives forte, it is not the only area in which
the companys equipment and expertise are useful.
Occasionally the Cincinnati-based company is called on to
be true detectives, searching for items beneath the surface
that dont even have a helpful starting point, such as an
above-ground valve or manhole.
A couple years ago, the company was contacted
via Facebook by the National Trail School in New Paris,
Ohio. A former student had reminded the school about a
forgotten time capsule that had been buried somewhere
on the property in 1978. The location of the time capsule
was narrowed down some by those who recalled the day it
was buried. But that only narrowed it down to the general
area of the employee/student parking lot.
The Underground Detective selected a day in which
school was not in session so a tech could freely scan the
entire area and got to work with ground-penetrating radar
(MALA GeoScience). Within two hours, the time capsule
was located. A few weeks later, a crew dug up the area
the tech had marked. Unfortunately, the excitement of
unearthing the capsule was dampened somewhat when it
was discovered that the contents had suffered extensive
water damage during their 30-plus years underground.
Still, the schools staff and students were excited that the
capsule had been located as they hadnt had any luck until
The Underground Detective got involved, says company
president Rob Harris. The company was even invited to
the banquet for the opening of the capsule, where the tech
who did the locating was recognized for his efforts.
It was a great event to be a part of and an exciting
change from the ordinary locating that we often do,
Harris says.
Another opportunity that allows the company to get
away from typical locating work is cemetery restoration.
The Underground Detective sometimes is called on to
locate unmarked grave sites.
Those are fun jobs, Harris says. Theyre interesting.
We dont do a ton of work with cemetery restoration, but
we do more than you would think. We might do about one
to three a month.
On one such job last year, the company was asked
to assist in confirming locations for both marked and
unmarked gravesites at the Old Green Castle Cemetery in
Dayton, Ohio a cemetery of more than 200 burial sites,
mostly Civil War soldiers. Like the time capsule job, GPR
technology proved beneficial. The Underground Detective
used it to locate nine unmarked gravesites in the cemetery.
Harris says GPR is perfect for such a task because it
uses nondestructive electromagnetic radiation waves
and is able to provide a view below the surface without
disturbing it.
With GPR, we were able to determine exactly where
graves were so that they could be properly marked and/or
moved to a new site.

mapping the site of a gas station where soil testing is required before any
belowground work can occur are some of the types of jobs the company is
tasked with. Thats where the emphasis on quality training both in safety
and job execution proves to be particularly important.
We take our safety training pretty seriously, Harris says. Our guys are
out in industrial areas and need to be safe while doing their work. There are
a lot of annual trainings we continually do, and we also do quarterly audits to
check up on them safety wise. And then there are internal audits just to make
sure employees are performing their job functions well.
Ultimately, customers are not able to perform their work safely if The
Underground Detective doesnt do its work properly and locate everything
belowground, he says.

Rob Harris
Safety is what we preach to our employees, so we want to make sure our
customers are safe as well.
That means doing a thorough job, utilizing both long-standing
locating methods as well as taking advantage of ever-improving technology.
Technicians begin by doing a walk-through of a site and observing any clearly

visible above-ground signs of where utilities may be located, such as valves

and manholes.
Well do your standard utility locate and find everything we can. Then,
before were done, we do some scanning with ground-penetrating radar
(GPR) and electromagnetic equipment just to make sure were not missing
anything, Harris says.
The company utilizes GPR equipment from MALA GeoScience and
electromagnetic locators from Radiodetection Corporation. The company has
also used equipment from Subsite Electronics, Vivax-Metrotech, Prototek,
Goldak and RIDGID.
FULL SPECTRUM OF TOOLS
Technology wise, the biggest development in how The Underground
Detective operates has been with GPR, which uses
electromagnetic radiation waves and detects the
reflected signals from objects below the surface.
Harris says the company added GPR to its equipment
arsenal in the early 2000s, and as the technology
has developed, it has become a valuable asset for
more than utility locating (see sidebar). But in the
mission to provide exemplary service and locate all
belowground structures for customers, the company
is careful not to rely too heavily on GPR.
Technology has gotten better, but as far as the
core of the equipment, were using stuff we used back
then (in the early years of the business), says Harris.
With GPR, every one of our trucks is required to
have it, and it is always something we can use. But we
just consider it another tool in the toolbox. Its been a

wonderful asset, but some people have a misconception that its a magic tool
and thats all you need in order to locate everything.
Technicians use the full spectrum of tools available including
customer education to deliver quality service. Harris says that over time,
more people have realized that with so many private belowground utilities,

its necessary to call a company like The Underground Detective in addition

to using the required 811 service. But a lesson is still sometimes needed.
You still run across people who dont get the concept, Harris says. 811
is the requirement, but there is still definitely a gap there. You really need to
call 811 and then a company like ours. Its just education. We try to blog a lot
on our website, we do trade shows, we do Lunch and Learn events. I would
like to do more of those any way we can just talk to people.
In one recent blog, Harris highlighted the benefits of vacuum excavation
another area of the business that has seen a growth trend of late. The
Underground Detective uses trucks from Denver-based VACMASTERS to do
everything from simply uncovering a utility for inspection to digging entire
trenches.
Its an everyday thing for us, but the projects vary, Harris says. The
trenching is becoming more popular
with it, instead of a customer
using a backhoe. Environmental
engineering firms love it for getting

THE FUTURE
Looking ahead, Harris says the
plan is to conduct business in the
same manner that has proven successful over the last two decades
continually looking for growth
opportunities but doing so gradually so there isnt a drop in quality of
service. The most recent satellite office in Chicago opened last year, but
there are no immediate plans for any
other new offices at the moment.
Were definitely looking to
expand in our current markets,
just getting bigger and adding more
technicians, Harris says. The
main goal is to have two or three
technicians at each location. As far
as new growth, were still contemplating that. C

All-in-One Inspection
ROSCOPE i2000 provides multiple inspection options in one modular unit
By Craig Mandli

he tools used for pipeline inspection, utility location and leak

detection can take up a lot of room, and they arent easy on the
pocketbook. Thats why the modular ROSCOPE i2000 from
ROTHENBERGER USA, a device capable of performing all these
tasks, makes so much sense. Thats also why the product was such a great
fit and a big hit at the 2015 Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment
& Transport (WWETT) Show.
The hand-held inspection device displays live color video from an
imaging source on its 3.5-inch color touch screen. It is designed as a remote
inspection tool for home inspections, cable routing and plumbing inspections.
Its perfect for hard-to-reach areas and allows the user to capture still images
and full-motion video along with audio.
Residential and light commercial plumbers are definitely our
target market, says April Jeras, a national account sales manager with
ROTHENBERGER. This tool can fill a lot of roles in a plumbers toolbox.
The device is equipped with an imaging and lighting source with
self-leveling image rotation (with respect to gravity), zoom and LED light
adjustment. It can wirelessly transmit either images or video to a secondary
hand-held device such as a Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone or tablet through the
use of a simple downloadable app.
The Wi-Fi capability is great, as it enables the plumber to send images
and video directly to a customer, Jeras says. That way the plumber doesnt
have to drag the unit through the house to show the customer whats wrong.
The modular focus of the unit enables the plumber to add services
while minimizing cost and the total toolbox footprint. The Module TEC selfleveling camera head comes mounted on a 2.9-foot flex cable for inspection
of hard-to-reach areas, such as P-traps and disposals. A second camera, the
Module 25/16, has a high-performance camera for inspection in pipes 2 to 4
inches in diameter, and comes mounted on a 50-foot push cable.
For location purposes, the Module ROLOC PLUS provides an easyto-configure pipe and sonde locating device that enables pinpoint camera
head location and utility depth measurement. The Module ROSCAN 150
infrared camera can be used for leak detection visualization and analysis
of refrigeration and heat sources. The basic ROSCOPE i2000 inspection
device comes with the basic hand-held unit, internal rechargeable lithiumion battery, quick charger, USB cable, Module TEC imager and a blow mold
carrying case.
All other modules are sold separately.
We view the ROSCOPE i2000 as a tool that enables plumbers to
diversify service offerings, Jeras says. It has been on the market less than
six months and the response has been phenomenal. Weve gotten great traffic
and dozens of good, solid leads from the WWETT Show.
Jeras says that, based on feedback she heard at the show, the company

is looking at making some subtle changes to the model while increasing the
features on its other pipe inspection systems.
Next year I think well have a 100-foot cable reel to offer that will
help on the longer inspection runs, she says. Were also going to add
Wi-Fi connectivity and the touch screen to our other cameras. Customers love
those features.
Jeras says the company is already excited to see what the next WWETT
Show has to offer. This show is great because it puts us in front of our
target market plumbers and drain cleaners, she says. It also gives us
the opportunity to talk with septic installers and pumpers, and others
that are looking to diversify. Thats what were after. 800/545-7698;

TWO-MAN NEW YORK CLEANING SHOP FOCUSES ON PROVIDING
HIGH-END SERVICE TO AN AFFLUENT CLIENT BASE
BY MAR IAN B O N D | P H OTO G R AP HY BY C O R EY TO R P I E

T.J. HECKMAN, OWNER OF PRO DRAIN INC. IN NEW YORK,

HAS EVERY INTENTION OF GROWING HIS COMPANY,
BUT HE HAS PLACED CUSTOMER SATISFACTION ABOVE GROWTH.
Ill keep this company small long before I ever have technicians who do
not fulfill my vision, Heckman says. I want my employees to always do the
right thing on a job for my company. If worse comes to worse, I wont grow. I
dont want to tarnish the brand I am building.
What is the sense of having a bigger company and a less-than-perfect
name? I am willing to work a little harder in order to develop a pristine image.
That is my goal.

Pro Drain owner T.J. Heckman (right) and technician Cesar Ortiz remove a manhole
cover to access a sewer line on a cleaning job.

36

Cleaner December 2015

Heckman started in the industry at the age of 12 when a neighbor with a

small drain-cleaning business would take him along on jobs. That continued
through high school, and Heckman continued working in the industry while
he was in college studying criminal justice.
After studying for two years, he left college early to work for larger sewercleaning companies. Along the way, he learned not only the finer mechanics
of drain cleaning, but also how a business should be run. Heckman wanted
to make his career as a drain cleaning professional and saw opportunity as a
business owner.
ESTABLISHING PRIORITIES
Heckman clearly defined his company goals at the outset. He wanted a
client base that would value a higher level of service, and he set his sights on
the wealthy neighborhoods of Westchester County in New York state. Having
worked in the area for so many years, he realized that the type of company he
wanted to build would appeal to the areas higher income clientele.
He opened Pro Drain in September 2012, taking jobs on weekends and
off-hours while continuing to work for another company for the first eight
months. He initially focused on basic drain cleaning, but he knew from past
experience that he needed to invest in jetting and inspection equipment.
He purchased his first camera and jetter within a year, and both paid for
themselves within eight months.
After three years, the company has grown by leaps and bounds. He
credits much of this to his ability to interact with people and the fact he is
more of a problem-solver than salesman.
We are still challenged in building the customer base, Heckman says.
I go after a particular type of customer. I like to get real estate management
companies. People that have responsibility for 30 or 60 buildings or multiple
units, and that way the phone rings a lot more often.

T.J. Heckman
Pro Drain was recently
called in to solve a problem
for a new client where a previous company had broken a cable and left it in the
sewer. The woman had been told the only way to take care of the problem was
to dig and replace the line. When she got the same comment from another
company, she was reluctant to bring in a third contractor, but she finally
called Pro Drain. Heckman says they were able to retrieve the line in a short
time period, and for a lot less than doing a replacement. He was pleased when
this new customer wrote a glowing letter to Angies List.

RAISING THE STANDARD

T.J. Heckman is proud to be in the drain cleaning profession. He says
its not always looked upon favorably, but it provides an opportunity to
make a good living and perform an important service to the community.
Some people dismiss this type of work and fail to see the potential,
Heckman says. Even some plumbers demean what drain cleaners do.
After attending college for two years studying criminal justice, Heckman
decided it wasnt what he wanted and returned to drain cleaning. He had
been around the industry since age 12 and knew it was the right move.
Ive been in this industry for 25 years, and I know it better than
anything in my life. Ive seen what works and what doesnt work, and I

know my competition. And I know my market area.

Heckmans five-year plan calls for continued growth, but he knows
finding technicians who can meet his standard will be a challenge. To
that end, he says he would like to see more training opportunities and
points out the potential for someone to make a very good living working
in the industry.
We need to promote critical thinking in this country, especially with
young kids who go to college and memorize procedures but often come
out going in a different direction. I wish they could learn to have a vision
and learn to analyze a situation, and ask, How could I do this better?
How can it be done more effectively, more efficiently? To think outside
the box this is important in many trades, but most important in the
industry I happen to serve.

Any job is a job worth doing well. That is what

we do for a living, and Im proud of that, he says.
IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Residential service laterals are typically 80 to
100 feet, but Heckman has seen them up to 300
feet, and he recently worked on a line that was only
22 feet. Pipes are usually 4-inch cast iron pipe from
the house transitioning to 6-inch clay. These pipes
are generally serviceable, even though they may be
around 50 to 60 years old. He also sees decent clay
lines that could be up to 100 years old.
I rarely see perfect lines, he says. The ground
settles and the pipes shift ever so slightly. So typically
I like to refer to them as in serviceable condition.
If you can clear a line every other year, I call that a
serviceable line.
They see the typical issues: lots of roots, baby
wipes and grease. He encourages his customers to

and where he has a preventive

they can avoid any recurring
problems. This customer came
to him as a result of a call from
another drain company that
could not take care of the client
at that time.
Other multi-family projects

have their own sewer system
that feeds into the city main.
Here again they will see clay or cast iron lines, and still some Orangeburg.
Pro Drain also works as a subcontractor and does sewer cleaning for the
New York City Housing Authority, cleaning and inspecting the larger 10- to
14-inch pipes. His company has worked in four of the five boroughs in New
York City.
This is where our jetter really performs, he says.
The 4018 skid jetter (4,000 psi/18 gpm) from US Jetting is carried on the
2014 Ford E-450 box truck with side and rear roll-up doors, a power pull-out
reel, remote controls, and an antifreeze system plus twin 150-gallon water
tanks. The truck carries jetter hose in four sizes from 1/8- to 1/2-inch, and
nozzles from Enz, StoneAge (Warthog), Aqua Mole and US Jetting for all hose
sizes. The truck also carries a full-size RIDGID SeeSnake with a self-leveling

a 100-foot SeeSnake microreel.

Heckman also uses General Pipe Cleaners wire drop and bulb-head

Both vehicles carry a full assortment of hand tools and a full range of
plumbing parts and fixtures.
THE RINGING PHONE
Heckman says one of his favorite parts of owning the business is hearing
the phone ring. Early on, it was often much too quiet, but today its steady
enough that he has an answering service that takes calls 24/7. But it took a lot
of initiative to get to this point.
In the beginning, I never turned down an opportunity to work, he
says. Vacations, weekends if somebody called, I went and would be there
within an hour. Other drain companies would refer work to me when they
were too busy or if it was on the weekend. I always went. I marketed myself to
a lot of plumbers in the area because many dont want to do drain cleaning.
Some plumbing operations have large customer bases. I also did a lot of
mailings, knocked on doors. I would tell them I could clean much faster. I
still do a lot of this work.
The important thing was exposure, he says. If I didnt show my face
to everybody and then do the job right jobs other people couldnt do I
would not grow.

BETTER BUSINESS

Dont Wait for Filing Day

Take time now to think about your 2015 taxes and protect your hard-earned income
By Judy Kneiszel

nother year is almost in the books, but before you close those books,
consider if there is anything you can do before the end of the year to
improve your 2015 tax situation when it comes time to file.
Filing day 2016 is too late to do much about your 2015 taxes.
The time is now to get your house in order in preparation for the upcoming
tax season. Most things you can do to change how you stand with the Internal
Revenue Service must be done before the end of the year. Here are some
possibilities to consider.
GET IN A TAX-TIME FRAME OF MIND
First and foremost, make sure your business records are up to date and
organized. Not only will this simplify the job at tax preparation time, it will give
you a picture of where you stand and help you decide if anything needs to be
done before the end of the year.
Tax codes are always changing. Have a chat with your accountant or tax
preparer about ways your business changed in 2015 and how the tax codes

have changed. If you prepare your own taxes, pay attention to financial news or
do some Internet research on changes to the tax code that took effect in 2015.
ASSESS YOUR INCOME
Determine if it would be to your advantage to defer some income. When
figuring out what you owe in taxes for 2015, every dollar you bring in before
Dec. 31 is considered. Any money that comes in after Dec. 31 counts as income
for 2016, even if the work was done and the invoice sent in 2015. If youve had
a good year and predict either a decline in your business or a drop in taxes in
2016, let those customers who owe you know they can take an extra couple of
weeks to pay their bill.
If the opposite is true and youd benefit from having more income in
2015 than in 2016, offer clients an incentive to pay outstanding invoices before
the end of the year. If having more expenses this year would help their tax
situation, they might just thank you.
REVIEW YOUR PURCHASES
How do your 2015 purchases compare to 2014? If
you need to increase 2015 deductions, purchase items
for your business now that youll need next year. Were
you thinking of adding a trailer jetter to take on more
municipal work next year? Maybe sooner is better than
later. What about the office? Would a new computer,
printer or copier improve efficiency there? How about
software, toner and other items needed to make that
equipment hum? Consider purchasing now. And
dont just think major purchases stock up on copy
paper, postage stamps, bathroom tissue, chemicals and
restroom repair parts. It all adds up.
DEDUCT OR DEPRECIATE?
For major purchases youll need to consider how to
structure your deduction, whether an immediate writeoff is best or spreading out the depreciation over years.
Either way, for any 2015 tax benefit, equipment must
be purchased and in use by the years end. Be aware,
however, that large items dont have to be depreciated
like they once did, but the cost of items you can deduct
may have dropped. The total amount you can elect to
deduct under section 179 for most property placed in
service in tax years beginning in 2014 generally cannot
be more than $500,000.

46

Cleaner December 2015

FIND MORE DEDUCTIONS

Other ways to boost deductions include prepayment or early payment of
equipment maintenance contracts, subscriptions or supplies you order on a
regular basis.
Check your inventory of paper and chemicals for write-offs. Goods
that have gone down in value since their purchase
because they have become damaged or obsolete can
become a deduction. Check with your accountant or
tax preparer.

income tax deductions for a single item with a fair market value of $5,000 or
more, a separate form must be completed.
Remember, the more you think about taxes before the end of the year, the
less stressed out youll be in early 2016. Consider it a Christmas gift to yourself
that will last well into the new year. C

CONSIDER WHO PREPARES YOUR TAXES

Maybe youve been a do-it-yourselfer but think
its time to hire someone else to prepare your taxes.
Or maybe you havent been pleased with your tax
preparer in the past. The time to find someone is now
not in the middle of tax season.
To find a tax preparer you can trust, get
recommendations from other business owners. Call
some tax preparers to get a feel for their philosophy,
personality, availability and hourly rate. If your
accountant prepares taxes for 10 beauty salons and
you, you might want to look around for someone
who understands the realities of your world a little
better. And try to find someone who will be available
to advise you throughout the year, not just on the few
winter days when they are working on your return.
If you handle tax preparation yourself, were you
happy with the software you used to file electronically
last year? If not, do some research on software and
purchase a new package or upgrade your existing one
now so you have time to learn how to use it effectively.
CONSIDER OTHER YEAR-END STRATEGIES
Make payments to your retirement plan or set
one up before the years end to reduce your income for
this year. Check the contribution limits for your type
of plan. Discuss the best strategy with your financial
planner or accountant.
Boosting charitable deductions can improve your
tax situation. Only contributions made to qualified
charitable organizations can be included as taxdeductible donations, however, so when you make a
contribution, ask the organization whether they are taxexempt. If youre not sure about an organization, Exempt
Organizations Select Check is an online search tool at
IRS.gov allowing users to search for and select an
exempt organization and check information about its
federal tax status and filings.
If you are planning to claim any in-kind
contributions as charitable income tax deductions,
you can find the fair market value of qualified items in
IRS Publication 561. If you are making any charitable

Tools to Empty Any Tank or Trap

The right equipment will ensure youre ready any time youre called on to pump a septic tank or grease trap
By Dee Goerge

rains and sewer lines are your forte, but sometimes youre called on
to pump grease traps and even septic tanks. When those calls come
in, you can pass them on to someone else, show up and muddle
your way through it, or take on the challenge like a professional
pumper and pull in a nice profit in the process.
Being properly equipped is the key to moving from one task to the other
with professional ease. There are several must-have items that should be in
every pump truck: ear plugs, extra safety glasses, gauntlets and leather gloves,
a tarp, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, an extension-handle mirror, safety vests, a
fire extinguisher, zip ties, orange street cones and caution tape, for example.
And for sure youll need shovels and other basic hand tools.
But thats just a start, says Jeff Coe, co-owner of Jims Septic Service in
Grants Pass, Oregon, who believes in having a well-stocked truck.
The issue is having everything in its place in the truck so it can be
quickly found, he says. Both of his trucks include full-length toolboxes
stocked identically with equipment for pumping and minor repairs.
His most-used tools may be the custom-made 10-foot rakes constructed
of aluminum tubing and plate.
Theyre used as a matter of routine to ensure stubborn sludge is removed
from the bottom of the tank, Coe says.
At Austins Pumping Service in Strafford, Missouri, Doug Hurrelbrinks
drivers also have tools they fabricated and welded themselves.
We service a lot of restaurant grease traps that are heavily impacted
with grease, Hurrelbrink says. We use the scraper to clean heavy buildup
on the baffles, and we use the masher to mash large chunks of grease so they
more easily evacuate them. We made them ourselves, as we could not find

anything currently on the market that had handles long enough. Nor could
we find anything strong enough for daily use.
Even popular manufactured tools get customized to make them more
suitable for some pumpers.
We feel our most valuable tool is our Crust Buster, says Chris
Vandermeulen, owner of C&W Portables & Septic Service in Manistee,
Michigan. We custom-made the shaft for the unit out of stainless steel due
to how much grease trap cleaning we do. It makes keeping it clean a lot easier,
it never rusts, and we made the length to fit the special traps we do.
Besides making tools that do the job, Coe notes tools that keep
technicians safe are also important. For removing tank lids, he had a custom
hook built out of 5/8-inch round stock steel with a T-bar handle to make it
easier for one or two people to lift.
We have a 5-foot tripod with a chain hoist for large, heavy or awkward
lid removal, he adds.
Safety and comfort for workers is a top priority. Back braces seem like a
must to have available if an employee feels the need, Coe says. I also have
cooling devices for the men in summer.
To avoid frustration at the work site, its important to make sure that
tools are in good working order and ready to use. That means having the
correct extension cord for jackhammers and the right size bits and accessories
for different jobs.
For businesses such as his that do minor repairs, the tool kit includes
basic replacement parts such as pumps, floats and plumbing fittings and all
the necessary tools to install them.
Traditional tools like square and round shovels, cordless drills and
reciprocating saws always come in handy, he adds. As do items pumpers
might not think about such as lubricating spray, glue and even hornet and
wasp spray.
A truck equipped with the right tools will keep a cleaner ready for nearly
any situation, minimize frustration and save both time and money.
To raise efficiency for maximum profit, you have to have the correct tool
for the job, Coe concludes. C

MONEY MANAGER

Spend for Success.

Save for Survival.

Erik Gunn is a magazine writer and

editor in Racine, Wisconsin.

If you have to choose where do you cut spending, and where should you spend more?
By Erik Gunn

rying to digest and implement business advice can be like trying to

fill a squirt gun from a fire hose. Theres no shortage of information
to act on, but it comes at you so fast most of it will be wasted.
Spend more on this! Stop wasting money on that! And so on.
So where do you start?
To help get some focus, I asked a number of small-business owners and
consultants in a wide range of fields what top costs they would recommend
cutting back on, and what top things they would recommend spending more on.
As you can probably guess, they didnt all agree; some directly
contradicted each other. Still, there was a surprising degree of consensus.
Read on.
WHERE TO CUT COSTS
1. Traditional marketing channels. Spend more on the Yellow Pages!
said none of these people, ever!
Local print advertising and TV and radio ads are all losing their audiences
although if you have concrete evidence to the contrary for your business,

you might have reason to set aside this advice.

The bottom line, says William Schroeder, co-director of www.justmind.org,
an Austin, Texas, therapy clinic, whose original degree is in marketing: Get
a clear picture of how people really are finding out about your service, then
focus your dollars on those channels.
Social media is easy and cheap for an owner to keep updated, he says

You need to pay for an accountant. You might

be great in your line of work, but you can easily
lose all your money if you dont have someone
whos good with numbers working your books.
Haroon Ahmad

2. Paper and paperwork. There are many ways you can significantly
reduce your paperwork.
There is really little reason to use paper anymore, says Kelly Fallis,
CEO of Remote Stylist, an online furniture seller. Electronic signing, credit
card swipe gadgets that attach to mobile phones or tablets, and vast storage
capacity on the Web (or, if you dont trust the Internet, on a server that takes
up just a few inches of shelf space in the office) all combine to eliminate the
need for paper in most day-to-day business use.
WHERE TO SPEND MORE
1. Tailored marketing. Your business still needs marketing of some
kind. Rather than only focusing on your local hometown advertiser, broaden
your efforts to include search engine ads, ads on review sites like Yelp!, and
social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
Dont assume that one size fits all for you, or for your customer base.
That also means, dont just blithely throw money in any direction.
Instead, take some time to explore your options and see which ones best
fit your community and your customer base. You might find that Yelp! isnt
that popular in your area, but another review site is. Or that Google Plus has
outstripped Facebook among social media users in your community or at
least among the segment of the population youre most eager to reach.
Dont just use your ads to toot your own horn. Start creating clientspecific content, says James Chalmers, vice president for strategy at Mako
Invent, a consumer-product development firm. Not a sales pitch, but rather
information that educates them.

54

Cleaner December 2015

Theres some dispute over how much attention you should give to search
engine optimization SEO for short.
One correspondent points out that SEO formulas change drastically
when search engine companies like Google tweak their search algorithms
and send your carefully crafted online promotional material to the bottom of
the search lists.
Yet local SEO is important for services that rely
mainly on a local customer base. Here the best advice
may be to take your time vetting the people who sell
you their services. Make sure they really understand
not only your business, but their own.

You have to market your products and services in such a way that
your message resonates with the problems of your target market and ideal
customer and convinces them that you are the only one who can solve that
problem for them.
And that will be money well spent. C

2. Employee quality. Note, I didnt just stop

with employees. Youll be wasting money if you
simply hire people but fail to invest in their training,
in making your business a satisfying and rewarding
place to work, and in giving them the tools they need
to do the job right the first time.
Make sure your staff and teams are taken care
of and happy, says Chalmers. They are your best
sales team, and productive staff people cut costs in
the long run.
3. Professional help where you need it. Unless
you have a CPA, a law degree and a human resources
management certification on your resume, you cant
do these things all by yourself.
Sure, you can automate a lot of your bookkeeping
operations and you should. But dont just rely on
Mint.com or QuickBooks any more than you would
assume that you can take care of your health and
your familys health by reading Web M.D. or the
Mayo Clinic website.
You also need to pay for people who are good
at numbers, says Haroon Ahmad, head of public
relations for JotForm, a tech company that builds
business forms online. You need to pay for an
accountant. You might be great in your line of work,
but you can easily lose all your money if you dont
have someone whos good with numbers working
your books.
The same is true for other professional expertise,
especially in any aspect of the business that can be
affected by local, state or federal laws.
Its also true for marketing.
You need to spend your time and effort on
doing those things that grow your business, says
Walter Wise, a business strategist and executive
coach at BPI Strategy Group. If you are not good at
any of these and most small-business owners are
not find someone to help you and teach you how
to do them.

PLUMBING PRODUCTS
HAMMERHEAD TRENCHLESS
EQUIPMENT RS MAXPATCH
RS MaxPatch, a fast, trenchless,
selective point repair system for pipes 3
to 48 inches in diameter distributed by
HammerHead Trenchless Equipment, is
a safe CIPP solution used to repair short HammerHead
sections of pipe. The corrosion-resistant
fiberglass composite system repairs and seals isolated pipe defects such as
cracks, leaks, joint offsets, corrosion and root intrusion. The high-strength
resin and fiberglass matrix provides structural strength, while its thin,
tapered profile and smooth finish help maintain or increase flow capacity. It is
a product of RS Lining Systems, the provider of RS Technik pipe rehabilitation
solutions. 800/331-6653; www.hammerheadtrenchless.com.

NU FLOW NU DRAIN
The Nu Drain CIPP system from Nu Flow
creates a protective structural pipe inside an
existing host piping system without the need for
digging or destruction, allowing the system to
line inside infrastructure and underground pipe.
CIPP restoration uses a liner saturated with epoxy Nu Flow
to create a barrier that can span missing sections of pipe, which commonly
causes low flow and root intrusion. The seamless and jointless CIPP is used to
rehabilitate deteriorating sanitary drain and storm sewer lines, stopping leaks
while controlling and preventing root intrusion. The technology is best suited
for pipe 3/4 to 12 inches in diameter, along with larger custom sizes, while
accommodating multiple 45- and 90-degree elbows. The Scorpion Cutter is
used to clean out the pipe of existing roots and buildup. Once cleaned, the
pipe is lined with the structural liner, which will prevent root intrusion. It
can be used as a preventive measure against future cracks and intrusions.

and impeller design that allows shut-off heads up to 180
feet with a single-stage centrifugal pump. This design gives
operators the flexibility to change between the standard and

cutter plate, simplifying maintenance and reducing service
parts inventory for low-pressure sewage systems projects. It
has an optional quick-disconnect cord for easier servicing Pentair-Myers
in the field, double-row bearings to absorb axial and radial
loads, and an oil-filled motor for cooler operating temperatures and longer
life. 888/987-8677; www.femyers.com.

PIPELINE RENEWAL
TECHNOLOGIES JETCAM 40
The JetCam 40 from Pipeline Renewal Technologies
uses high-pressure water for propulsion, steering and
cleaning as it captures live inspection video from inside
lateral lines. It can traverse multiple bends in pipe, steer
through branches and levitate above debris, allowing
municipal contractors and commercial plumbers to locate
failed pipes, cross bores and blockages, as well as perform
Renewal
cleaning. Six propulsion nozzles generate the power needed Pipeline
Technologies
to pull the flexible hose through multiple bends, and a side
nozzle on the camera can be aimed to steer through diverging pipes and hover
past obstacles. An optional forward-facing nozzle can be pulsed to clear debris
and other obstructions. The system works with any high-pressure water source,
including pressure washers and combination trucks. The 1/2-inch hose comes
in lengths from 115 to 190 feet. 866/936-8476; www.pipelinert.com.

weeping tiles and sewer lines in an
older house in Steinbach, Manitoba.
He couldnt properly access these
areas to determine if there were tree
roots, structural problems or buildup, and therefore couldnt properly inform
the homeowner on what was damaged or leaking, or how quickly he would be
able to solve the problem.

SOLUTION

Medit Inc. suggested using the VIPER sewer camera unit, with a 1-inch
camera head, flexible push cable, color LCD monitor, image/video capture to
a memory card, and a rechargeable battery for portability. The inspector was
able to insert the camera into the drainlines and weeping tiles and see the live
images on the monitor. He was able to see tree roots and measure out where he
needed to dig to remove them and replace damaged sections. He was also able
to capture images before and after the work to show the homeowner.

RESULT

The homeowners were happy that the roots were removed with
minimal effort and that they had documented images from before and
after to prove there would be no additional leaking. The home inspector
was able to charge extra for the video inspection and get a better idea of
the exact problem and where it was located, saving time and money by
not having to dig up the entire line. 800/239-9934; www.fiberscope.net.

Pathogen protection system

designed for jet truck and
CCTV operators
PROBLEM

Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) became

aware of new and dangerous pathogens found in
wastewater in a new study published in m-Bio magazine by the American Society of Microbiologists.
Sewer maintenance crews also expressed concern
over growing reports of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and viruses they may come in contact with and
the potential health consequences for themselves, their families and citizens in
the community.

SOLUTION

Utility management decided to employ the Vanguard Pathogen Protection System, which is designed to substantially reduce contaminants in sewage
from reaching equipment operators. An independent environmental company
was contracted to field test the system with a CSU crew during standard sewer
maintenance operations. Cultures taken from the field showed a reduction of
bacteria colony counts by up to 98 percent. The system is simple and convenient
to use right from the operator control panel. It comes with a hand-held antibacterial spray gun with 50 feet of retractable hose to clean boots, gloves, crawlers,
tools, vacuum tubes and the work area. OEM and retrofit systems for jet, combo
and CCTV units are available.

RESULT

By taking a proactive stance for the health and safety of its team,
CSU saw increased worker confidence and morale while working
in a known hazardous environment. Reduction in worker sick days
and insurance costs are currently being assessed. 800/781-3164;

Every day is Earth Day.

When we have a large rain storm there is so much infiltration into the
sewer system, sewage treatment plants can be flooded. And if this overflows into the bay you have a problem. There are huge fines for dumping
sewage into the bay, and a lot of cities have been going through inspecting
and even doing grants for homeowners to upgrade their sewers.

SAFETY FIRST

Lets Be Careful Out There

Video provides helpful safety reminders for cleaners who haul liquid loads
By Jim Kneiszel

hink about when you were a kid competing in an egg relay race at
summer camp. You were never so careful about carrying anything as
you were holding that raw egg gingerly on a spoon as you lurched
toward the finish line.
Now that youre grown up and making a living operating a vacuum truck or
supervising an entire fleet of pumpers, you probably dont compete in many egg
relay races. But doesnt it stand to reason that youre probably a safer driver day
to day if you imagine youre always carrying a precarious load down the road?
Thats what the producers of a safety video aimed primarily at drivers
hauling big liquid loads believe. They say youll gain potentially life- and loadsaving advice by viewing the video, Cargo Tank Driver Rollover Prevention,
produced jointly by the National Tank Truck Carriers and the American Trucking
Association in cooperation with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
You can see the video at www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rolloverprevention. Its also
free to download and show drivers as part of a safety-training program.
MUST-SEE VIDEO
As part of his work with the NTTC, Steve Niswander, vice president of
safety policy and regulatory relations for Groendyke Transport Inc., Enid,
Oklahoma, envisioned this video for tanker drivers to help reduce dangerous
rollovers. Groendyke runs about 1,000 semi-tractors 70 million miles annually,
hauling mostly liquid hazardous materials.
Niswander argues the video part of a national anti-rollover campaign is
a must-see safety tool for drivers who pull trucks with fixed tanks or semi-rigs
with tank trailers. Any pumper who hauls an unstable load or a load with a high
center of gravity will benefit from the tips shared in the video.
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
The video features several truck drivers who have been involved in rollover
crashes, and their stories carry a lot of weight with professional haulers.
Interspersed with the compelling driver stories, the video covers four major
areas of risk for dangerous rollover accidents: vehicle design and performance,
load effects, highway factors, and driver factors.
Using video graphics, the video shows the impact of sudden movements
and tripping the wheels over the shoulder when carrying an unstable load. It
explains how dangerous liquid slosh and surge can result from driving too fast
for conditions, by squaring off the turning radius and by sudden braking or
other maneuvers.
It goes on to explain that drivers are ultimately responsible for many of
these factors. It stresses that drivers need to do extensive route planning if
theyre carrying a load more prone to rollover risk. And the video shares a
variety of tips that would be helpful to any hauler:

80

Cleaner December 2015

Know your limitations. Be aware of how loads with a high center of

gravity will react when you turn, hit a ramp or execute a braking maneuver.
And understand that a full load is actually safer to transport than a partial load.
The vast majority of rollover crashes (94 percent) occur in rigs carrying partial
liquid loads, as they are more susceptible to extreme sloshing and surging.

When you get so comfortable and think that

youve been driving so long and you have
so much experience that it all comes
naturally to you, youre going to mess up.
Because somethings going to get
you when youre not expecting it.
G. Wayne Matheson
Manage your speed. Remember that speed limits and guidelines at curves
are meant for general motorists in good weather conditions, not for drivers
pulling unstable loads. Fleet experts say truck drivers should maintain a speed
at least 10 mph below the posted speed on curves. The faster you go, the more
risk you have that a sudden adjustment will cause a rollover.
Maintain your rig and route. Always perform thorough pre-trip
inspections to make sure brakes, tires and suspension will operate safely. And
before you take the wheel, identify the higher risk sections of your route. As
you are able, pinpoint stretches with soft shoulders, downhill grades, limited
visibility and twisty turns. Know these risks well ahead of time so you can slow
your reactions and maintain control.
Watch for driver fatigue. Its always a bad idea to drive when youre tired,
but its doubly dangerous when pulling a top-heavy or liquid load. Stay sharp
by eating right, stopping frequently to stretch, and getting plenty of sleep. Be
mindful of clues that you need to take a break, including daydreaming, frequent
yawning, heavy eyelids and head bobbing or drifting from your lane.
LISTEN TO THE PRO
In the video, 33-year veteran driver G. Wayne Matheson sounds the safety
watchword for fellow liquid load haulers.
Anytime you speed up, youre subject to mess up, Matheson warns.
When you get so comfortable and think that youve been driving so long
and you have so much experience that it all comes naturally to you, youre
going to mess up. Because somethings going to get you when youre not
expecting it. C

Levine and Sons relies on word of mouth, Yellow Pages ads and its own
extensive website to generate most of its business. The site includes links to
a series of five-minute reality TV-style episodes called Flush TV, which feature

LEVINE AND SONS AUGMENTS 85 YEARS OF

EXPERIENCE WITH AN EXPANDING SLATE OF
COMPLEMENTARY SERVICES BY PETER KENTER

DEDICATED SERVICE

Levine and Sons is a family-owned business thats been active in

the Detroit area so long that when it first opened in 1927, technicians
on plumbing service calls traveled by trolley with their toolboxes. The
company has remained true to its plumbing roots, but has expanded into
related areas of service, including commercial and residential HVAC and
sewer lateral relining. The business operates on four simple principles to
thrive in an economically challenged market: know your market, know your
job, arrive quickly and work efficiently.

The business, founded by Louis Levine, went on hiatus during the Great
Depression but was firing on all cylinders by the end of World War II.
Louis son, Tom, got into the business when he was 18 years old and is still
working with the company at 82 (see sidebar).
Then, as now, the companys bread and butter was service and repair
work including both plumbing and heating. The company also performed

bets, preparing for the possible conclusion of the refinery work with an
increased investment in the plumbing business.
Today, the business employs 25
people and is headquartered in Redford Charter Township, Mich., a little
more than 10 miles west of Detroit.
Toms three sons assist him with the
business, with Jim running operations and estimating, Dan handling
finances, and Paul specializing in
ordering, inventory management and
equipment maintenance.
The company offers drain
cleaning, sewer lining, pipe bursting, CCTV inspection, and dig-andreplace sewer line work in addition
to standard plumbing and HVAC
services. The customer mix is 80
percent residential and 20 percent
light commercial.

Multifunction sewer rehabilitation
system inspects, grinds and jets
By Ed Wodalski
The HA165 has a 3.5-inch
vertical stroke for reinstating
laterals in 7- to 12-inch pipelines.
The HA195 has a 7-inch stroke for
use in 8- to 20-inch relined pipes
or larger with an axle extender.
The
compact
WJ160
precision-jet cutting attachment
removes tree roots during inspections in 7- to 19-inch pipelines. Fats,
oils and grease, sand, sludge, small roots, and other deposits can be
jetted away using up to 4,500 psi. Water pressure between 3,000 psi
and 15,000 psi eliminates root intrusions by blasting off the main root
where it enters the pipe. For larger jobs, the WJ180 ultra-high-pressure
attachment delivers up to 29,000 psi for removing calcium and
concrete without damaging the wall in 8- to 40-inch lines, including
egg-shaped pipes.
The system is very accurate, says Bart van der Zalm, international
sales, ID-TEC. With the WJ160 you have the nozzle next to the camera
and high-powered lighting. You can rotate the equipment 500 degrees.
Youre able to reach any part of the pipe. Precision-jet cutting is almost
like cutting with a laser beam.
The 3.9-inch-long by 3.9-inch-wide and 4.7-inch-tall CQL160 CCTV
inspection module includes a high-definition infinite rotating pan-andtilt camera and two 1,200-lumen LED lights, all protected by sapphire
lenses. 503/504-8474; www.sr-series.com; WWETT 16 booth 1060.

The modular SR-SERIES multifunctional sewer rehabilitation

system from ID-TEC (Innovation Development Technology) is available
as a portable unit or vehicle-installed system.
Both feature a base robot with twist-and-lock equipment for
inspecting, root control, high-pressure precision jetting, packer/carrier
placement, lateral reinstatement, and calcium and concrete removal.
The portable system includes a high-pressure water pump, cable
reel and CP3D suitcase control unit with 10.8-inch tablet and two sixaxis joysticks. Powered by a 110-volt outlet or generator, the control
unit with inspection/mapping modules enables the user to create
photos and videos. Data such as X and Y gradients, rotation, distance,
and water and air pressures are displayed on the monitor.
The 19-inch-long by 6-inch-wide and 5-inch-tall R160 robot has
a stainless steel body and four-wheel drivetrain that can navigate 500
feet of pipe.
The robot can be equipped with two types of grinding, milling
and cutting equipment. The HA165 and HA195 models can be used
with an 8.2 hp (6,000 watt) piston motor or 3.4 hp (2,500 watt) turbine
motor driven by high-pressure water.
The portable 77-pound HD70F high-pressure pump generates
2,175 psi at 2.9 gpm. Vehicle-mounted pumps generate 15,000 psi
and 29,000 psi. Water pressure and flow settings can be continuously
adjusted. The portable cable reel contains 131 feet of hybrid cable
and 131 feet of high-pressure hose (29,000 psi maximum). Vehiclemounted reels contain 500 feet with longer lengths available.

GSSI GROUND-PENETRATING RADAR SYSTEM

Geophysical Survey Systems (GSSI) has updated its UtilityScan groundpenetrating radar system to include 3-D data collection and playback mode
for the UtilityScan DF model that provides X-ray-like imagery of the ground
in addition to the standard two-dimensional mode. It can be used to locate
metallic and nonmetallic objects and features a dual-frequency antenna and
touch-screen monitor to allow users to simultaneously view shallow and deep
targets. New software features allow the user to input colored markers while
using a GPS unit to aid in subsurface target classification. 800/524-3011;
