Project Description:
Zinneke is a large community-based bi-annual parade in Brussels. Started in 2000, and given a kick-start by the
city's role as Capital of Culture, its adopted name is local slang for a small dog or a mutt, and typifies the
parade's desire to set its own rules and accept no boundaries, whether French or Flemish, Belgian in origin or
wider. Its Charter states that is doesn't consider Brussels' variety of communities as living apart together but as a
real melting pot, a colourful jumble of interactions in all directions which gives rise to a fireworks of art
products. Furthermore, the Zinnekes sing the praises of bilingualism: Turco-German, Anglo-Spanish, AraboJapanese, Franco-Albanian, Italo-Swahili and pure "Brusseleir". In short, it.aims to show interculturality in
action.
Work on designs and activist start well before the Zinneke parade in over 200 community associations located in
four zinnodes' in different sectors of the city. On the day itself 4 000 people can participate as dancers, jugglers,
drummers, on floats and on the streets, and 300 000 have been estimated as spectators.
Lessons to be Learned:
The possibility of capitalising on a large event like City of Culture to kick-start an initiative, should
communities be keen to participate;
The constant need to balance organisational rigour with more open-ended creativity;
The visible impact of interculturality in action.
Target Groups:
Voluntary community associations, young people, general public
