Marshall game captains vs. FIU for Senior Day 2015, as selected by Coach Doc
Holliday and his staff -- Offense: Davonte Allen, senior wide receiver; Ryan
Yurachek, sophomore tight end; Defense: Evan McKelvey, senior linebacker; Corey
Tindal, junior cornerback; Special teams: Matt Cincotta, senior long snapper; Tyler
Williams, senior punter.
Senior Ricardo Williams made his first career start at nose tackle for the Herd, with
senior Jarquez Samuel sidelined by injury.
Senior cornerback Keith Baxter had his first career sack for the Herd (4:45, first
quarter).
True freshman quarterback Chase Litton has 20 touchdown passes this season.
That is the Marshall freshman record. Chad Pennington and Rakeem Cato each
had 15 touchdown passes as freshmen.
Senior Deandre Reaves 69-yard punt return for a touchdown is the first punt return
touchdown for Marshall since Oct. 12, 2013, when Devon Smith went 77 yards for
a punt return score at FAU.
Reaves, with a 93-yard kick return touchdown against Kent State and a 69-yard
punt return touchdown against FIU this season, is the first Marshall player with kick
and punt return touchdowns in the same season since Troy Brown accomplished
the feat in 1991 (three KR TDs, 1 PR TD).
Running back Remi Watsons 62-yard touchdown run (second quarter) is the
second longest rush of his career. He had an 80-yard touchdown run in the victory
at Akron in 2014.
Junior wide receiver Josh Knight had two receptions, matching his career total in
his first two Marshall seasons (two in 2014).
Marshalls last shutout of a major-college foe was the final game of 2003 season
(Nov. 28), versus Ohio, 28-0, at Edwards Stadium.
Marshalls 52-0 win is its first shutout of a C-USA opponent, as well as it is largest
margin of victory in a C-USA game in 11 years in the league. The previous high for
a margin was 48 in a 61-13 win over Southern Miss in 2013.
Allens 71 yards on his five receptions moved the senior to 1,629 career reception
yards and past four players on the Herd all-time list into 19th place. His next catch
will be the 100th of his career.
The 14 penalty yards were the fewest for the program since just 10 versus Illinois
State in 2008.

Holliday Perfect vs. south Florida

Its no secret that Doc Holliday has made recruiting the south Florida area a
hallmark of his career. The Thundering Herds head coach has left his mark ON the
field where that area is concerned as well as he is now 7-0 versus FAU and FIU. He
swept the two schools the last three seasons and added an additional win over FIU
in the 2011 Beef O Bradys Bowl.

Next Man Up
Coach Holliday talks frequently about the programs Next Man Up philosophy as
it relates to reserves playing well in place of injured starters. Its been a seasonlong situation for Hollidays team, which continues to endure through depth. The
Herd has had 35 players start on offense or defense in 2015 -- 19 of those on the
offensive side.

50+
Marshalls 52-0 win over FIU was the 15th time that the Thundering Herd has
reached the 50+-point plateau under coach Doc Holliday, tying Jim Donnan
(1990-95) for the all-time school mark. Bob Pruett (1996-2004) reached that mark
14 times and Cam Henderson (1936-42, 1946-49) did it on 13 occasions.

Efficiency at its best

The Herd has averaged more yards per play than the opposition in 23 of its last 26
games (Ohio, Kent State and Middle Tennessee in 2015).

Marshall is 23-7 in games played after Oct. 28 in Coach Doc Hollidays five-plus
years a coach, including 13-1 at Edwards Stadium.

Sack Battle
The Thundering Herd has had more (or as many) sacks as the competition in sevenstraight contests, the longest streak for the program since an 11-game stretch that
spanned the last game of 2009 and the first 10 of the 2010 season.
The Top
The Herds Chase Litton leads FBS true freshman quarterbacks in touchdown passes
with 20, in nine games. The only rookie passer with more is redshirt freshman Brent
Stockstill of Middle Tennessee, who has 26 TD passes in 11 games.

Whats up? Doc

Marshall Coach Doc Holliday enters his sixth season on the Herd sideline, and the
only current Conference USA head coach who was in the Texas-based league when
Holliday arrived is Rices David Bailiff.
Holliday, named at Marshall in December 2009, was part of a 23-man FBS coachinghire class prior to the 2010 season. Of those 23 coaches, only six remain on the job
at the schools hiring them in 2010 Holliday, Florida States Jimbo Fisher, Notre
Dames Brian Kelly, Ruffin McNeill at East Carolina, Virginias Mike London and Todd
Berry of Louisiana-Monroe.
Holliday is 49-27 (.645) in five-plus seasons. The only coaches in his hiring class
with better records are Fisher (67-13, .838) and Kelly (55-21, .724).
Holliday received a six-year contract extension this past spring, through June 2021,
bumping his base and supplemental salary to $755,500.

Herd Finishes Under Holliday

Since Doc Holliday became head coach in 2010, the Herd has an excellent record
of finishing off its opponents once it takes the lead. Marshall is 36-7 when it scores
first, 36-4 when leading after the first quarter, 39-2 when leading at halftime and
38-3 when leading after three quarters.
10+
Since the start of the 2012 season (51 games), MU boasts 945 10+ yard plays, an
average of 18.5 per contest. As you might imagine, those numbers have yielded
the following: In that same period, offensive coordinator Bill Leggs attack has 29
games of 500 or more yards total offense and 28 games with 40 or more points.
Protecting the Home Turf
Marshall is nationally known for being one of, if not the, toughest places to play in
college football. The program has won 85.1 percent (148-26) of its home games in
Joan C. Edwards Stadium, the second-highest mark in the country. Baylor, who is
in just its second season in McLane Stadium, is first at 90.9 (10-1). Marshall has won
20 of its last 21 home games, dating to an Oct. 27, 2012 loss to UCF (last two home
games in 2012, 6-0 in 2013, 6-1 in 2014, 6-0 this season).
Tyler, too
Herd senior Tyler Williams impressed quickly upon his 2012 arrival in the program,
winning the punting job as a true freshman walk-on and then setting the school
single-season record with a 45.19-yard average. Now, he has a shot at the career
average record.

The graduates
Marshall will play the 2015 season with 13 players already owning their MU
undergraduate degrees a record for a Herd football team. MU had five 2015
seniors (athletic eligibility) graduate last December wide receiver Davonte
Allen, linebacker D.J. Hunter, safety Taj Letman and tight end Joe Woodrum in
management, and offensive guard Sebastian Johansson in sports management/
marketing. The roster gained four more graduates in May cornerback Keith
Baxter (health science), defensive end Joe Massaquoi (criminal justice), offensive
tackle Clint Van Horn (political science) and punter Tyler Williams (marketing).
Then, four summer graduates were added in August defensive end Armonze
Daniel (management), defensive tackle Steve Dillon (Regents bachelor of arts), kick
returner Deandre Reaves (marketing) and linebacker Evan McKelvey (marketing
and management). In addition, former offensive lineman Cam Dees gained his
finance degree. Dees had to give up football because of multiple knee injuries.
Middle Tennessee Notes
Senior running back Remi Watson usually No. 8 wore No. 47 as tribute to senior
running back Devon Johnson, who remains out due to injury.
Marshall game captains at Middle Tennessee, as selected by Coach Doc Holliday
and his staff -- Offense: Davonte Allen, wide receiver; Ryan Yurachek, tight end;
Defense: Jarquez Samuel, nose tackle; Evan McKelvey, linebacker.
Tyler Williams 52-yard punt (11:45, first quarter) is his 19th punt of 50 or more
yards this season and the 57th of his career.

The Fort Wayne, Ind., resident currently has a 43.9-yard average over his three-plus
seasons. The school record of 43.4 belongs to Pat Velarde (1982-83). And only 68 of
Williams 197 career punts have been returned, or 1 for every 2.9 kicks.

Marshalls fumble recovery in first quarter first forced fumble of senior defensive
tackle Steve Dillons career and first career fumble recovery by linebacker
Devontrea Tyler.

In three-plus seasons, Williams has had 58 punts of 50 or more yards, including 12

of 60-plus. He has placed 66 inside the 20, with only 22 touchbacks.

At 5:50 in the first quarter, running back Hyleck Fosters 30-yard halfback pass to
wide receiver Justin Hunt was the first running back pass attempt and completion
by Marshall in the Coach Doc Holliday era (2010-2015). The last running back
pass attempt was on Sept. 26, 2009, by Darius Marshall a 27-yard completion to
freshman wide receiver Aaron Dobson on the second play of the third quarter in a
27-16 win over Memphis at the Liberty Bowl. Darius Marshall also ran for 203 yards
and three touchdowns that day.

Williams has been especially clutch in 2015, as he is second nationally with 25

kicks that have been downed inside the 20. Williams 2,752 punting yards rank
11th nationally.
His stellar performance in the 2013 Military Bowl was a key to the Herds victory
over Maryland, as Williams pinned the Terps at their own 1, 5, 1 and 8 among his
seven kicks. His career-long boot was a 66-yarder at Rice in 2012.

Tight end Emanuel Byrds 1-yard scoring catch (4:23, first quarter) was his first
career touchdown for Marshall.

Williams is the fifth four-year starting punter in Marshall annals, following Bob
Esbaugh (1971-74), Chris Hanson (1995-98), Curtis Head (1999-2002) and Kase
Whitehead (2008-11).

12:00 second quarter For Herd, defensive end Gary Thompson gets his fourth
forced fumble of season (fifth of his career) and defensive end Ryan Bee gets his
third fumble recovery of season.

Happy returns
Herd kick return man Deandre Reaves has set the school record for single-season
return yards in each of the last two years 924 in 2013 and 931 last season. In the
loss at Ohio, he also claimed the schools career record.

At 4:12 in the second quarter, quarterback Chase Litton intercepted by MTSU

linebacker T.T. Barber is Marshalls first turnover since 4:35 of second quarter in
Oct. 17 win at Florida Atlantic (a Litton interception) just more than 12 quarters.

Reaves has 2,304 career kick return yards. The school mark that lasted nearly four
decades was Ray Crisps. who posted 1,966 yards from 1975-78.
Reaves has gotten his kick runback yardage in the last two-plus seasons. He
didnt have a kick return as a freshman in 2012. He has two career kick returns
for touchdowns, both for 93 yards (vs. Northern Illinois-2014, at Kent State-2015).
Extra Points
Seconds after Tiquan Lang returned an interception 30 yards seven seconds into
the win over Purdue, placekicker Nick Smith trotted onto the field for the ensuing
extra point.
Smith has a PAT streak to continue. Justin Haig made his final 102 extra points last
missing Nov. 2, 2013 in a win over Southern Miss (third quarter), and Smith kicked
one in last seasons victory at FIU.

Marshalls fourth-down stop of Middle Tennessee at 10:39 in the third quarter was
the Herds 14th fourth-down stop of the season.
The 104 Marshall snaps tied the double-OT GMAC Bowl in 2001 for the third-most
Herd snaps in any game.
It was the third three-OT game in Herd history. Marshall downed Western Carolina,
27-24, in 1991, and lost at Virginia Tech, 29-21 in 2013.
Allens 112 reception yards move him to 1,487 career yards, putting the senior 23rd
on MUs all-time list.
Charlotte Notes
Junior safety Tiquan Lang usually No. 21 wore No. 47 as tribute to senior
running back Devon Johnson, who remains out due to injury.

With four in the win over Charlotte, the Herd streak is 147 when Marshall faces
WKU on Friday. Marshall had a streak of 156 straight when Haig missed in 2013.

Marshall game captains versus Charlotte, as selected by Coach Doc Holliday and
his staff -- Offense: Michael Selby, center; Ryan Yurachek, tight end; Defense:
Taj Letman, safety; Evan McKelvey, linebacker. Selby leads the team with seven
captain selections in nine games in 2015.

Hang on!
Its easy to see why Herd Coach Doc Holliday talks about ball security so often.
His five previous Marshall teams have provided a strong indicator of why turnover
margin is so important.

Defensive tackle Jarquez Samuels sack on Charlottes first series was the senior
nose tackles first sack of the season and third of his career.

Hollidays six Herd teams have a combined 49-27 record. When Marshall has an
edge in turnover margin, it is 27-5. When the turnover number is equal, Marshall is
11-4. But when the opponent is more sure-handed, the Herd is 11-18.

Wide receiver Davonte Allens 66-yard touchdown reception from quarterback

Chase Litton (6:30, first quarter) is the Herds longest completion this season. It also
was Allens 12th career touchdown catch, moving him into a tie for No. 21 all-time
at Marshall with Andre Motley (1988-90).

Of Marshalls 76 games under Holliday, the Herd has played 38 while producing
zero or one turnover.

Tyler Williams 54-yard punt (4 mins, first quarter) was his 18th punt of 50 or more
yards this season and the 56th of his career.

In 2015, Marshalls offense has lost one fumble in the last 37 quarters. Tony Pittman
lost a fumble on first offensive series of ODU game. Prior to that, the last offensive
fumble was by Devon Johnson on the final play of the third quarter at Ohio.

Marshalls nine-play, 97-yard touchdown drive (13:27 second, Litton-to-Yurachek

TD) is the Herds longest drive by yardage this season, topping an 89-yarder
against North Texas one week earlier.

Perfect vs. Texas at Home

Interestingly enough, Marshall has never lost to a school from Texas at home.
The Thundering Herd is a perfect 12-0 against Texas schools in games played in
Huntington. Marshall owns two wins over North Texas (1988, 2015), two wins over
Houston (2008, 2012), three wins over Rice (2007, 2011, 2014), two wins over SMU
(2005, 2009), two wins over UTEP (2006, 2010) and one victory over UTSA (2013).

Tight end Emanuel Byrds 41-yard reception (early second quarter) is the longest
by a Herd tight end since Devon Johnson had a 52-yarder against East Carolina on
Nov. 29, 2013 the Herds first C-USA East Division-clinching win.
Placekicker Nick Smiths 37-yard field goal miss (13:04, third quarter) ended his
streak at 12th straight field goal, and Marshalls at 19 in a row. Smiths 12 in a row

Marshall Football 2015

puts him No. 2 on the Herd all-time list for consecutive successful field goal tries.
Craig Ratanamorn made the school record 16 in a row with his last two in 2008 and
first 14 in 2009. Justin Haig made his final seven last season prior to Smiths streak.
The last miss was Haigs 23-yarder in the first quarter (11:26) against UAB at Legion
Field on Nov. 22, 2014.
Quarterback Chase Littons 486 pass yards ranks third in Herd single-game history.
Only Byron Leftwich (576, GMAC Bowl, 2001 vs. East Carolina) and Michael Payton
(496, VMI, 1991) have thrown for more yards in a Marshall game.
Wide receiver Davonte Allen made 12 catches for 232 yards, the most for the
program since Josh Davis had a 264-yard day against Appalachian State in 2002.
The 232 ranks sixth in Herd single-game receiving history. Randy Moss owns the
record of 288 yards versus Delaware in 1996 Division I-AA playoffs.
The yardage numbers posted by Litton and Allen who had a 66-yard scoring
catch -- were single-game highs in Conference USA this season.
Cornerback Corey Tindals fourth-quarter interception was his second this season
and third of his career.
Marshall has won 22 of its last 24 games and 27 of its last 30.
Marshall is 22-6 in games played after Oct. 28 in Coach Doc Hollidays five-plus
years a coach, including 12-1 at Edwards Stadium.
Marshall has won eight consecutive Conference USA regular-season road games.
North Texas Notes
Marshall game captains versus North Texas, as selected by Coach Doc Holliday and
his staff -- Offense: Michael Selby, center; Davonte Allen, wide receiver; Defense: Taj
Letman, safety; D.J. Hunter, linebacker.
With wide receiver Justin Hunt making his first career start and running back Remi
Watson making his first start of 2015, Marshall has had 34 players make a start on
offense and defense this season.
Defensive end Blake Kellers 20-yard half-sack of DaMarcus Smith is the first of
Kellers Marshall career.
Marshalls 89-yard touchdown drive (1:30, second quarter; Hyleck Foster 3-yard
run) is the Herds longest drive of the season (by yards).

for the season.

Hyleck Foster earned his first rushing attempts of the season, carrying 17 times
for 122 yards.
Nick Mathews 12-yard reception in the second quarter is his longest gain of the
year.
Davonte Allens 22-yard touchdown gives him three for the season and 11 for his
career, tied for 22nd all-time at Marshall with Eric Ihnat (1987-90), Bruce Hammond
(1985-96) and Brian Swisher (1982-85).

Marshall seasons Reaves two and a 100-yarder by Troy Evans versus Southern
Miss in 2010.
Linebacker Evan McKelveys third-quarter fumble recovery was the first of his Herd
career.

The last time consecutive foes had so few points against the Herd came before
Marshall joined C-USA in 2005. In the final two games of 2003, the Herd won at
UCF, 21-7, then closed an 8-4 season at home with a 28-0 spanking of Ohio.

Tyler Williams 12 punts are his career high number, topping nine in the loss at Ohio
on Sept. 12 (two weeks ago).

Marshall.
Nick Smiths third point-after-touchdown of the game was the 122nd straight
conversion for the Herd. The last miss was by Justin Haig on Nov. 23, 2013, at FIU.
Smith is 25-for-25 on kicks this season (6-of-6 FG and 19-of-19 PAT).
Corey Tindals first-quarter interception was the second of his career (first this
season). The pick by Kendall Gant to end the game was Marshalls eighth of the
season.

career, both in the second quarter. He finished the game with 12 tackles, making
him only the seventh Herd defensive lineman with at least that many stops in a
game since 1997.

Redshirt freshman Emanuel Beal recorded his first catch in the first quarter on a
five-yard pass from Chase Litton.
Tyler Williamss 65-yard punt in the first quarter set a new season long (previously
60 vs. Purdue). His career high is 66, which he set at Rice as a freshman (Sept. 22,
2012).

Tyler Williams had four punts inside the 20 in the game, giving him 18 of those this
season. Thats already the seniors most inside-the-20 punts in a season, topping
his 16 as a 2012 freshman.

Redshirt sophomore Tony Pittmans two carries on the first-quarter touchdown

drive are his first of the season.

Tight end Ryan Yuracheks 31-yard reception (9:10, third quarter) is the longest in
his two Herd seasons.

Chase Litton recorded his first two touchdown passes to redshirt senior Deandre
Reaves (0:04 first quarter, 11:14 second quarter). The TD receptions are the first of
Reaves career.

Yurachek and slot receiver Deandre Reaves each had a career-high six receptions
against the Monarchs.

quarter was his 23rd career rushing touchdown and his 29th career touchdown.
He now sits at 13th all-time in career rushing touchdowns and tied for 12th all-time
in touchdowns with Orlando Hatchett (1989-92).

Pittmans 32 rushes are the most for a Herd running back in a single game since
Darius Marshall rushed 32 times for 133 yards against UAB in 2009.

Deandre Reaves had a career-high 82 yards against Norfolk State. His 36-yard
touchdown reception is his longest reception of his career.

The seven points for ODU are the fewest allowed by Marshall in a Conference USA
game since a 27-7 win over UAB in 2009.

In the third quarter, Devon Johnson reached the 100-yard rushing mark for
the 12th time in his career. Since World War II, only Chris Parker (31) and Doug
Chapman (20) have more for the Thundering Herd.

ODUs 2.8 yards per pass is the fewest Marshall has allowed since UCF managed
just 1.7 in a 30-14 UCF win in Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Nov. 15, 2008.

passes, held by Stan Hill (as a sophomore in 2002). His four touchdown passes are
the most by a Herd freshman quarterback debut.

Marshall Football 2015

Redshirt senior safety Taj Letmans interception at the 13:41 mark of the fourth quarter was his third of the season and his third-straight game with a pick.
Junior wide receiver Justin Hunt caught his first touchdown of the year , a 25-yarder, at 9:22 in the fourth quarter.
True freshman wide receiver Nick Mathews (nine yards) made the first catch of his career at 7:39 of the fourth quarter.
The Herd is 16-1 all-time vs. FCS (former Division I-AA opponents) since moving to FBS level in 1997, losing only to New Hampshire, 48-35, in 2007.
The Herd shutout Norfolk State in the second half, a first for the Herd since Nov. 8, 2014, at Southern Miss, where Marshall won 63-17, and outscored the Golden Eagles
35-0 in the second half.
Ohio Notes
Marshall game captains at Ohio, as selected by Coach Doc Holliday and his staff, were guard Sebastian Johansson and center Michael Selby on offense and tackle Steve
Dillon and safety Taj Letman. Selby was a captain for the second straight game.
Junior Devontrea Tyler made his first career start at middle linebacker for the Herd.
The Herd 2015 roster has only two players who played in the 2011 game at Ohio redshirt seniors Keith Baxter (cornerback) and Evan McKelvey (linebacker).
Redshirt freshman right guard Jordan Dowrey made his first career start for the Herd.
Herd safety Taj Letmans interception (2:56 first quarter) was his second this season and seventh of his career. Its the Herds fifth pick in 2015.
Devon Johnsons 73-yard touchdown run (10:07 second quarter) was the second-longest run of his Herd career. He had a 75-yard yarder (no touchdown) in a 2014 win at
UAB. It also was Johnsons 28th touchdown (rush and receive) in his last 19 games.
Devon Johnson passed the 100-yard rushing mark in the second quarter with his 73-yard touchdown run. He has 11 games of 100 or more yards rushing in his Herd
career, tied for fifth with Ahmad Bradshaw. The top four are Chris Parker (31), Doug Chapman (20) and Ron Darby and Darius Marshall (12) tied for third.
With 28 career touchdowns (22 rushing, six receiving), Devon Johnson has tied former teammate and tight end Gator Hoskins for No. 13 on the all-time Marshall career
touchdown list. No. 12 is Orlando Hatchett (29 from 1989-92).
With a 42-yard kick return to start the second half, senior Deandre Reaves reached 1,982 career kick return yards, eclipsing the former Herd record of 1,966 set by Ray
Crisp from 1975-78.
With 7:30 remaining in the game, Devon Johnson totaled 2,039 rushing yards for his Herd career. He is the 15th back in Herd history to reach 2,000.

Birdsong, receivers Hyleck Foster and Deon-Tay McManus, tight end Ryan Yurachek, right guard Nate Devers and left tackle Sandley Jean-Felix. The two first-time starters
on defense were end Joe Massaquoi and nickel back Antavis Rowe. Birdsong, a transfer from FCS member James Madison, previously had made 14 starts for the Dukes.
Junior safety Tiquan Langs two interceptions returned for touchdowns (first quarter, 14:53; fourth quarter, 1:20) are a first for the Herd. No other player in Marshall history
has returned two interceptions for scores in a single game. His two interceptions for touchdowns ties the Marshall season record for a single player. Marshall had two
versus Akron in 1997 (by Tim Dempsey and B.J. Summers) and two against East Carolina in 2001 (by Ralph Street and Terence Tarpley).
Langs first pick-six may very well be a record. Nebraska also scored seven seconds into its 1996 meeting with Texas Tech on a fumble return and Marshall Media
Relations research following the game did not produce anything faster.
Lang joins Shawn Ferguson of Cincinnati in 1998 as the only C-USA players with two interceptions for touchdowns in one game.
Langs picks are the third and fourth of his career, and the first two touchdowns of his career. They are the fifth and sixth interception touchdown returns for the Herd in
defensive coordinator Chuck Heaters three Marshall seasons. There were three in 2013 (Raheem Waiters, Gary Thompson, Monterius Lovett), one in 2014 (Corey Tindal)
and Langs two Sunday.
Marshalls team total of 117 interception return yards is the third most in school history (164 vs. Weber State 1987 on seven INTs and 141 vs. Akron 1997 on three INTs).
Lang had a career high 17 tackles. His previous high was 10 in a 2014 home victory over Ohio University.
Marshalls first punt of the season, a 54-yarder by senior Tyler Williams, was the seniors 39th punt of 50 or more yards in his Herd career.
The 60-yard punt by Herd senior Tyler Williams (6:46, third quarter) was the 10th of his career to travel 60 or more yards.
Senior running back Devon Johnsons first-quarter touchdown reception was his 26th career touchdown (20 rush, six receiving), tying him for 15th on the Herd career list
with Mike Barber (1985-88) and Erik Thomas (1993-96).
Slot receiver Nick Mathews (0:38 left, first quarter), of Haymarket, Va., became the first true freshman to play for Marshall this season. Coach Hollidays team played 10
redshirt freshmen against Purdue.
Marshalls four interceptions were the most for the Herd since getting four picks in a 32-14 victory at Miami (Ohio) in October 1999. That game was the Herds first win in
Oxford, Ohio, in 60 years. Only four times in history has Marshall intercepted more than four passes in a game seven against Weber State in 1987 and Appalachian State
in 1990, and five against Western Michigan in 1956 and East Tennessee State in 1989.
Sundays attendance of 38,791 is the third largest crowd in Joan C. Edwards Stadium history (1991-present; capacity is 38,148). It was the opening game of the 25th
season for The Joan. Heres a look at the largest crowds:
41,382 West Virginia 24, Marshall 21 -- Sept. 10, 2010
40,383 West Virginia 48, Marshall 23 -- Sept. 8, 2007

Nationally ranked Marshalls 2014 dream football season was interrupted by a nightmare.
Western Kentucky rolled into Joan C. Edwards Stadium on the Thundering Herds Senior Day and went toe-to-toe
with Coach Doc Hollidays team. And after 1,446 yards total offense and a Conference USA record 133 points on the
scoreboard, the Hilltoppers ended Marshalls unbeaten season with a 67-66 overtime victory.
It was a battle between the leagues top two offenses ... and it played out just that way before a chilled crowd of
23,576.
After the No. 19/20 Herd took its first lead - in OT - on Rakeem Catos 25-yard pass to freshman Hyleck Foster, WKU
answered promptly with a 25-yard scoring throw from senior quarterback Brandon Doughty to wideout Jared
Dangerfield. The `Toppers went for a two-point conversion, and Doughty found a wide-open Willie McNeal in the
right flat for the upset.
That was the end of any possibility of a College Football Playoff access bowl berth for the Herd and C-USA.
You can call that WKU conversion the $6 million extra points. Thats how much the Group of Five conference that sends
a team into the CFP system will earn.
It was the most points allowed by a Herd team since an 81-0 loss at West Virginia on Oct. 20, 1923. The 1,446 combined
yards obliterated the combined total offense record in the Herd books - 1,249 for Marshall-Akron in 2001, a 50-33
MU triumph.
We didnt do a very good job of stopping them, Holliday said after the Herd (11-1, 7-1) had allowed 738 yards - the
most in history against a Marshall team - and a stadium record eight scoring passes by Doughty. And at the end of
the day, we turned it over too many times.
Western (7-5, 4-4) led 14-0 after only 3:37 had ticked off the clock, and the Herd was playing catch-up most of the day.
It was 49-42, WKU, in the highest-scoring major-college half this season.
And it wasnt just the Herd defense that was unraveled by Doughtys 34-for-50 day, for a stadium opponent-record
491 yards, and 237 rushing yards by Leon Allen.
Cato threw four interceptions. The only other time hes done that in his college career came in a 44-7 loss at Ohio in
Catos third college game, back in 2011.
This way my fault, Cato said after a game in which his seven touchdown passes set a Marshall single-game record.
The whole game came down to me being the quarterback of this team. I cant throw four interceptions and spot a
team 21 points.
It cant happen. It just comes down to that. I threw four interceptions and that cannot happen for me. The last time
I threw four interceptions was my freshman year at Ohio. It cant happen. Its as simple as that. This whole game
comes down to me. We arent in this predicament if I dont throw four interceptions. Its point blank. Everything that
happened today falls on me. We lost today because of me.
Marshall, which had trailed only 37 minutes, 6 seconds in its first 11 games, was in arrears 56:18 in this one. It was tied
at 49 on Steward Butlers 22-yard run with 58 seconds left in the third quarter, but the Herd didnt knot it again until
39 seconds left in the fourth quarter when Cato hit tight end Eric Frohnapfel for a 5-yard scoring pass to tie it at 59.
And speaking of bouncing back, Marshall has to do that this week. Despite the loss, the Herd will play host to the
C-USA Championship Game on Dec. 6 at noon against the winner of Saturdays noon matchup between Rice (7-4,
5-2) and host Louisiana Tech (7-4, 6-1).
You go into that locker room and there are a lot of broken hearts but the bottom line is weve got to put it behind
us because were playing for a championship next week, Holliday said. And the leadership on this football team
has to do a tremendous job of putting this game behind us and moving on because the ultimate goal was to win a
championship, and weve still got that out there for us.
Marshall also eclipsed 700 yards (708) for the third time this season, but it didnt matter, because the Hilltoppers
riddled a Herd defense that entered the game allowing a C-USA-best 324.4 yards per game, ranking 14th nationally
in total defense.
It was a back-and-forth game, said first-year WKU Coach Jeff Brohm. They are a good team and know how to win.
For us to find a way to win in the end on a two-point play which, I knew we had to go for it or the game would keep
going on.
So we went for it and we are lucky we made it. We try to be aggressive and we will go down swinging.
For the Herd, Butler was special in relief of starting running back Devon Johnson, who left with a left shoulder injury
after only three carries and 29 yards. Butler ran for a career-high 233 yards on 24 carries - the sixth highest single-game
ground total in MU annals.

Holliday said Johnson is not in good shape right now.

But when Butlers 2-yard touchdown was scrubbed with 5:32 to play after a replay ruling, the Herd had to use Justin
Haigs 17-yard field goal to cut WKUs 10-point margin into something more manageable.
Youre down 10 (59-49) and the one thing that cant happen right there is you cant come away with zero points,
Holliday said. You have to get points and then get it down there and tie up at the end. You cant take chance coming
away with nothing.
The Herd got what it needed on Cato-to-Frohnapfel with 0:39 on the clock, but it still hadnt outlasted the resilient
Hilltoppers, who will finish their first C-USA season with a bowl berth.
I didnt see a lot of panic, said Holliday, whose team trailed 42-21 fewer than 20 minutes into the game. They (the
team) fought back into it, tied it up, got it into overtime, went ahead. Unfortunately at the end of the day they made
one more play then we did, so I dont think there was any panic was involved in it.
Ultimately, we didnt play well enough to win the game, so thats what cost us.
Marshall ran for 291 yards, and with 3,462 ground yards this season took the school record for rush yards away from
the 1996 NCAA Division I-AA unbeaten national championship team (3,395).
Cato went 29-of-46 for 417 yards and his seven scores, taking his season total to 35 TD passes - making the senior from
Miami the only QB in Herd history to have three 30-TD seasons.

UPCOMING CONFERENCE USA SCHEDULE (all times ET)

It was his other career-high number on which he focused, however, as his senior counterpart from WKU passed for a
C-USA record eight scores. Hilltopper sophomore safety Brandon Leston had three of the picks of Cato.

Friday, Nov. 27
Marshall at WKU, 12 p.m. (FS1)

He made some great plays, the Herd QB said of Leston, but its on me. He made his plays and I didnt make mine.
They scored one more point than us and that all had to do with me. We got the ball and couldve scored easy, but I
threw that last pick in the end zone.

Saturday, Nov. 28
Florida Atlantic at Old Dominion, 12 p.m. (ASN)
Southern Miss at Louisiana Tech, 12 p.m. (FSN)
Middle Tennessee at UTSA, 2:30 p.m. (FCS)
Charlotte at Rice, 3:30 p.m. (ASN)
UTEP at North Texas, 3:30 p.m. (FSN)

It all comes down to me. I didnt make my plays today and Im mad at myself. I have to deal with it, but hopefully
Sunday I bounce back and have a great week next week.
Marshalls defense never could get a bead on Doughty, and Allen churned ground yards when needed.
We couldnt get the pressure on the quarterback like we wanted to, Herd senior defensive tackle James Rouse said
of Doughty, who was sacked twice. He was making good throws and the receivers were making the plays. We just
couldnt get them off the field on third down.
Junior safety Taj Letman led Marshall on defense with 15 tackles and an interception, but the Herds season tackles
leader, senior linebacker Neville Hewitt, said Marshalls stoppers were far too giving.
They were probably one of the best offenses we have played against all year, but we didnt play good defense, Hewitt
said. Its frustrating but what Im telling these guys is overall, this game never shouldve come down to one point. We
played bad defense in the beginning and had four turnovers.
We shouldve lost by more than what we lost by. But Ive told everyone to keep their head up. We lost by one point
but we have to play a championship game next week. We have to go back, look at what we messed up on and fix it.
We have to move on right now. We have to let it go. Its over and theres nothing we can do about it now except go
look at what happened and fix it. Now we know what losing feels like. We dont want to feel that again.

Marshall Football 2015

Doc Holliday
Head Coach - Sixth Season
(49-27 overall, 33-14 C-USA)

In five seasons, Marshall Coach John Doc Holliday has brought Thundering Herd football
back into the national picture.
His 2014 Herd (13-1) won the schools first Conference USA Championship with a thrilling
comeback, title-game win over Louisiana Tech. MU headed to the Boca Raton Bowl, where
it routed Mid-American Conference champion Northern Illinois, 52-23. The Herd finished
the season in the major polls No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches poll and No. 23 in the
Associated Press media poll.
The Herd coach was named the 2014 Conference USA Coach of the Year in voting by his
peers.
Holliday received a six-year contract extension (through July 2021) for $755,500 annually
on April 8. He takes a 40-25 record into the 2015 season, and the Herd has won 19 of its
last 21 games overall and 14 of the last 15 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The 2014 title season followed a successful 2013, as Marshall went 10-4, won the C-USA
East Division crown and downed ACC member Maryland in the Military Bowl -- the Terps last game before heading to the Big Ten.
In December 2014, Holliday was named the 15th annual Gazette-Mail Sportsman of the Year by Charleston Newspapers. In April
2015, the Herd coach was honored as the 2014 Lowell Cade Sportsperson of the Year by The Herald-Dispatch (Huntington).
Holliday, named as Herd coach on Dec. 17, 2009 in his first collegiate head coaching job, is widely regarded as one of the top
recruiters in the nation. He has more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, including previous stops at Florida, North
Carolina State and West Virginia, his alma mater.
Marshall displayed balance on offense and a strong defense throughout the 2014 season and boasted 10 all-conference first team
selections as voted by C-USA coaches, as star players like quarterback Rakeem Cato, center Chris Jasperse, defensive tackle James
Rouse and cornerback Darryl Roberts were team leaders.
In 2013, Holliday took the Herd where it hadnt been in its previous eight years in Conference USA nine regular-season victories,
seven league wins and a berth in the C-USA title game, mostly on the strength of an unblemished 6-0 mark at home for the first
time since 2002.
The Herds 31-20 win over Maryland was one of only two bowl victories by teams from non-AQ BCS conference teams over BCS
league schools in the 2013 postseason. Marshall also boasted the best (scoring) defensive turnaround in the nation (19.9 fewer
points allowed per game).
In five seasons, Hollidays program has had 33 All-Conference USA
selections (first and second team, and honorable mention), including
17 this season.
During his time in Huntington, Hollidays teams have consistently
improved as the season stretches into the winter months. The Herd is
21-6 under Holliday after Oct. 29, including an eye-popping 12-1 mark
in the friendly confines of Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
In 2011, the Herd went 7-6 against the 16th-toughest schedule in the
nation, a slate that was ranked second among non-BCS schools. Two of
those victories came against eventual C-USA champion Southern Miss
and Big East co-champ Louisville, the latter coming on the road for the
programs first non-conference road win since the early 2000s. Marshall
also won five Conference USA games, the most for the program since it
had joined the league in 2005.
During his coaching career, Holliday has coached in 23 bowl games,
three national championship games and coached 12 players that have
gone on to the National Football League. He has also coached five AllAmericans.
A native of Hurricane, W.Va., Holliday was a three-year letter-winner at
linebacker at West Virginia (1976-78) and has earned bachelors (1979)
and masters (1981) degrees from WVU. He won a state high school
wrestling title at 175 pounds (all divisions) in 1975 at Hurricane.
Holliday and his wife, Diana, have four children -- Meghan, Cade, Chase
and Cody.
