7 Still Image Capture Modes

There are two still image capture modes in See3CAM_10CUG.
1) Master Mode
2) Trigger Mode

7.1 Master Mode

The Master Mode of operation can be considered as a free-running mode of the camera. The
camera is configured for a preview resolution and still resolution. The application is started and
the Master mode is chosen and the application starts streaming the video. This is a simple mode
of operation for the camera without any external trigger capability.
The still image pin can be configured for the required still capture resolution. The still image
capture can be done in two methods as described below:
Software Still Capture
Hardware Still Capture
When the user initiates the still capture operation, the still image is captured and stored. In the
Software Still Capture operation, the user initiates the still capture operation from the
e-CAMView application.
In the Hardware Still Capture mode, the image can be captured by generating an active High
pulse at pin no.3 (TRIGGER_P_IN) and connecting the users system ground at pin no.4

(TRIGGER_N_IN) of DIN Connector. The system voltage can be either 12V DC or 24V DC.
Please refer the application note for schematics. The camera controller recognizes this rising
edge interrupt and then instructs the camera sensor to capture a still and this still image is sent to
Host. This Hardware Still Capture operation can be more like a hardware switch that initiates a
Capture operation when pressed by the user.
In Master Mode still image can be taken by using any of the methods, and also in both the
resolutions using any exposure or brightness value.
In both the cases, the Auto-exposure value is set in the still image capture. However, when the
camera is in Manual exposure mode for the video preview, the same manual exposure value is
used during the still image capture as well.

7.2 Trigger Mode

In Trigger mode, See3CAM_10CUG camera is capable of synchronizing the exposure (or
integration) of the pixels of the camera to an external trigger pulse that can be given through DIN
connector of See3CAM_10CUG. Since this is a global shutter camera, all the pixels start and
stop integrating at the same time, avoiding rolling skew during the capture of fast moving scenes.
In addition to this, the start of integration of pixels can be synchronized to an external event in
Trigger mode.
The asynchronous trigger input to sensor AR0134 is exposed as opto-isolated inputs to DIN
Connector by using opto-coupler. The system voltage can be either 12V DC or 24V DC. Sensor
interprets High Level as trigger pulse.
There are certain limitations/requirements that are to be followed by the user while using the
Trigger mode of See3CAM_10CUG, they are;
The minimum external trigger pulse width (Ttrig) should be 222 micro seconds in USB
3.0 and 1100 micro seconds in USB 2.0. Please refer the timing diagram given below.

In Trigger mode of See3CAM_10CUG, the preview will not be available and the camera will be
kept in standby waiting for a trigger pulse to start the integration of pixels and provide a global
shutter image.
The user can configure the camera settings such as focus, exposure, still image resolution, still
image storage location etc., in Manual mode and then enter the Trigger mode. In the Trigger
mode, the camera settings will be retained, but preview will not be available. The camera shall be
waiting for an external event on the DIN connector and the camera will start exposing on the
trigger signal. The external trigger pulse on the DIN connector must be of certain duration in order
for the camera to recognize this event.

Figure2: Trigger Mode Timing Requirement

In Trigger mode, only external Trigger event is supported and no software still image capture is
possible.
In trigger mode still image capture is supported for 1280 x 720 , 1280 x 960 and 640x480 binned
from 1280x960 resolutions in both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0.
All the images taken will be stored in the default location i.e. the desktop or can be stored in any
user specified path, in the .BMP or .RAW format.

8 Flash using Strobe Output

The strobe output from sensor is exposed to DIN Connector. The strobe signal from sensor is
optically isolated by an opto-coupler on See3CAM_10CUG. This signal will be made high during
the time of capturing an image.
There are two options to connect Flash to DIN Connector.
Directly connecting Flash to DIN Connector (Condition: Maximum current allowed
through Flash D1 is 20mA )
Connecting LED Driver to DIN Connector (Condition: Greater than 20mA through Flash
D1)
