Did you know that almost a third of Philippines population live below the poverty
line? According to the study, there are an estimated 4 million slum dwellers living

in Manila as of 2014. The presence of these informal settlers has become the most
disturbing moment while passing by the streets of Manila.
Through the decades, the style of our houses vary along time, technology and most
especially, the economy. We started from the very ancient cave and rock shelters and
lean-to and through time, we discover the use of nipa and bamboo to build a nipa hut or
what we called the Bahay Kubo. By the time of the Spanish colonization, Bahay-nabato was popularly used by local middle-class and government officials. And today, the
modern era, bungalows and apartments are recently used aside from soaring
condominiums.
As the growing population of the country, the status of our economy was affected.
Have you noticed the chaotic areas of Tondo and Payatas? Did you know that Tondo is
one of the poorest and underdeveloped area in the country? The presence of these
informal settlers and slums reflects the current status of the economy and shows
shortage of budget in terms of providing comfortable and enough housing for the
Filipino family.
As an architecture student, I propose to have minimalist design on Filipino houses to
provide an adequate and comfortable area where families live. Minimalist modular
design is one solution that can solve the shelters of the growing population of the
country because of its extreme simplicity in form. This design consists of basic
geometric shapes, harmonious colors and an open plan. This is a great design
especially on smaller parcel of lands like in Tondo because it consumes only enough
space for a family. Unlike the slums, these minimalist modular houses are aesthetically
appealing and more organized in plan. This will no longer look like the most disturbing
moment while passing along the streets of Manila.
Even though we cant control the growing population of the country, we can always
find a solution for an organized community and a better living for us to prevent the
disturbing moment while passing y the streets of Manila.
