SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 7

I.

II.

III.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the one-hour lesson, the students should be able to:
To differentiate between the characteristic of the earths structural
layers;
To appreciate the way earth is designed to harbor life; and
To name the boundaries among the earths layers
SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic:The Structure of the Earth
B. References:Breaking Through BiologyI by Susan D. Manosa and
Fredrick T. Talaue pp. 167-180
C. Materials: Laptop, LCD projector, big book, pictures
PROCEDURE
A. Routinary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4.
B. Motivation
The students will be shown pictures of detectives. They will be
asked to identify the tasks of a detective and how a detective comes up
with results about his or her tasks. They will be informed that they will be
acting as detectives as they carry out the days activities.
The class will be divided into five groups. They will be working
with their groups in accomplishing all of the tasks for the day.

C. LESSON PROPER
1. The Layer of the Earth
Discuss the crust. Show an acetate of materials that
compose the earths crust. Ask questions based on the data
presented on the table.
Discuss the mantle. Differentiate between upper and lower
mantle and the transition zone.
Differentiate between the Inner and Outer Core.
1

2. Investigatory Project Title

Student go to their respective groups.
Must list at least 3 possible IP problems for approval.
D. APPLICATION
Bring out students existing ideas
1. Questions posed could include:
2. How deep is the soil?
3. Where are the first rocks?
4. Where would you find lava?
5. Where does lava come from?
6. What's it like in the centre?
Promote reflection and clarification of existing ideas
Challenge some existing ideas
The teacher could draw a circle with a radius of 1m to represent the Earth
(scale 1m = 64000km) and ask the students to predict and draw using this scale the
following:
1. the Earth's deepest drill hole at Kola Peninsula, Russia,
1994 (around 2mm)
2. the source of volcanic lava (around 16mm)
3. the average depth of soil (much thinner than a hair)
The students predictions can then be discussed and the correct depths shown
and contrasted with the predictions. Later, students who have researched the
Earth's layers can mark in, the following features using the same scale:
1. the crust (around 5mm from the surface)
2. mantle (between 5mm and 450 mm from the surface)
3. outer core (between 450mm and 810mm from the
surface)
4. inner core (the inner circle of radius about 190 mm)
2

Students work out part of the answers for themselves.

Practise using and building the perceived usefulness of
scientific models
Promote reflection on and clarification of existing ideas
Clarify and consolidate ideas for/by communication to
others
IV.

EVALUATION
Students will not be evaluated on this lesson.
Students are however evaluated on the completeness of
their reflections in their science journal. This will be
collected and evaluated at a later date.

V. ASSIGNMENT
1. Bring a pre-cut Styrofoam ball that resembles the earth.
2. Bring styro or poster paint
3. Newspapers and paintbrush.
