Salient features of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from 2015-16


For BE(Regular & Sw) I BTech Programme

1.

The scheme is applicable to students admitted to all degree programmes during 2015-16 under
2015 regulations.

Attendance will be calculated course-wise and students having less than 75% physical
attendance in a course will not be permitted to write the semester examination in that course.
They shall redo that course when offered next, earn attendance and CA marks and appear for
the semester examination.

3.

Under cacs, students will have a choice to study a maximum of two courses additionally in a
semester or drop a maximum of two courses from studying in a semester. The subjects dropped
have to be studied only when offered later. However the total credits of courses registered in a
semester shall not exceed 30.

Students cannot drop Professional core courses in any semester.

5.

Additional courses that the students choose to study shall be only open electives or / and
professional electives. They shall study a minimum of six professional electives and three open
electives during the entire period of study.

If -a student has studied more than six professional elective courses, then six professional
elective courses with higher grades alone will be considered for CGPA calculation. The grades
obtained in other elective courses will also appear in the mark sheet.

7.

At the end of each semester students shall register for the courses which they propose to study
in the next semester.
During registration process the following will be displayed in the system screen:
(i) all courses prescribed in the scheme for the next semester.

(ii) all courses which they dropped during and prior to the current semester
From this list, the students will have to select the courses which he / she proposes to register for
the next semester.
8.

After the publication of results but before 10 days from commencement of classes in the next
semester, the student can modify the registration of courses since the courses in which they
have failed will also be included and displayed in the system.

9.

A student after registering for a current semester course/additional course may drop it in the
middle between I and II tests.

10. Registration for a maximum of 30 credits will include all courses' registered in a semester except
those courses in which attendance was already earned and CA mark scored has been retained.

11. The department will offer all current semester courses in a semester. The courses of previous
semesters which are to be offered in the current semester will be decided by HoD.
12.

Students admitted to the I year under regular stream shall register for all I semester and II
semester courses without fail. Such students will have the choice- to drop or study additional
courses only during the third semester and onwards.
Students admitted under later entry scheme shall register for all III semester courses. Such
students will have the choice to drop or study additional courses only during the fourth semester
and onwards.

13. Students after securing necessary attendance in a theory course with CA + FE component, fail in
the semester examination, they have the choice
(i) to retain the CA ma~ already earned and directly register for supplementary examination and
that choice is final tili they obtain a pass in the course.

(ii) . to redo the course by registering for the course, earn CA marks again and appear tor the
supplementary examination when it is conducted. If they fail in the supplementary exam they
will have the choice to retain CA mark as said in para (i) above or redo the course again.
14.

If after securing necessary attendance in a course with 100% CA marks (like lab, Project work I,
etc.) the students fail, they shall register to appear for the supplementary examination in that
course in the next examination.

If students do not secure the required attendance in any course (theory, practical, project, etc.)
and not eligible to appear for semester examination, then they shall redo the course again when
offered next, earn attendance, earn CA afresh and appear for the semester examination.

18.

Throughout the entire period of study, students may avaii withdrawal option only once by which
they can withdraw from writing the examination in one of the semesters and this withdrawal will
not be counted as an attempt for those courses and the students will still be eligible to secure
First class with Distinction.

19.

Students may study online courses from fifth semester to prefinal semester with the approval of
the HoD and the study of the same up to 3 credits may entitle the students for availing exemption
from one open elective / professional elective.

Students may study one elective as a self study course without attending classes provided they
do not have current arrears and only with the approval of the HoD.

21.

One Credit Courses will be offered by the departments as and when found necessary from third
semester to prefinal semester and the study of 3 One Credit Courses will be converted as
equivalent to one elective course.

22.

Relative Grading system will be followed for all theory courses and absolute grading system will
be followed for all other courses.

23. Classification:
a) First Class with Distinction:
A pass in all courses in tt attempt, CGPA 2! 8.5, pass within 5
years (6 years in the case of SW).

b) First Class: A pass in all courses within 5 years (6 years in the case of SW), CGPA ~ 7.
c) Second Class: Others
d) Rank: Securing first class with oistinction or securing first class having passed all courses
in first attempt and having not availed break of study/withdrawal.
