Summary
The correspondence between catchment areas and certain parts of the city finds visual
expression in the posters and billboards that publicize the films. Posters and billboards for Hindi
and regional languages films are painted by local artists and have a different look and feel.
Theaters in Majestic screening a new release sport a full-blown local aesthetic.
English language news magazines such as India Today routinely have articles on the Bombay
film Industry but less often feature regional cinema. It is easy to miss regional films if you do not
read Kannada and Tamil newspapers or magazines which are available in Majestic and other
areas of Kannada concentrations.
Even if regional films are reviewed in English papers, they are invisible to the Westernized elite
and the consumers of the Hollywood and the occasional high-profile Bollywood film.
Many of my respondents in the upper-middle classes, those with a convent school education
signifying Westernization, were extremely knowledgeable about Hollywood movies but unaware
of the happenings in the world of regional films, even of a raging controversy over a Kannada
movie that was being fought out in court. Shivaraj Kumar, a Kannada film superstar, remarked
that while he could not walk around in Majestic for fear of being mobbed by fans, this problem
did notaries in M.G Road and the Cantonment, as few would recognize him there. Hollywood
blockbusters and high budget Bollywood films draw a broad spectrum of the movie going public
and large numbers of the middle classes.

Paraphrase

Social qualifications are clear in print media too. English-dialect newsmagazines, for example,
India Today routinely have articles on the Bombay film industry yet less regularly include local
silver screen. English-dialect daily papers in Bangalore have every day and week by week
review about Hollywood and Bollywood films and stars, yet less space is dedicated to privately
made Kannada film. It is not entirely obvious provincial movies on the off chance that you don't
read Kannada also, Tamil daily papers or magazines which are accessible in Majestic and in
different regions of Kannada focus. The plan of urban and social space sets up a class and social
division crosswise over which news does not channel. Regardless of the possibility that local

movies are checked on in English papers, they are imperceptible toward the Westernized tip top
and the buyers of Hollywood and the periodic prominent Bollywood film.

A quotation from the article:

Nair, J. (2008) The Promise of the Metropolis. New Delhi: Oxford University
Press.
The volume gives a far reaching point of view on the city of Bangalore that identifies
with three levels of investigation, that of the considered city, the apparent city and
spatial practice. The book likewise outlines the styles and types of contemporary
urban majority rules system and the city as the site of a ceaseless redefinition of
Indian citizenship.
