Room114Sewing/ConstructionWorkroom:Designstudentslearnbasicconstructionskillsusingapparel
workroommethodsandindustrialsewingequipment.Eighteenindustrialmachinesanddressforms,a
patterncuttingtableareavailableforuse.
Room124ComputerApplicationsLaboratory:Merchandisingstudentshavecoursesscheduledinthis
computerlabtolearnassortmentplanning,merchandisemanagement,storeplanning,andmedia
planning.Thelabholds30workstationswithindustryspecificsoftwareisopenaccessduringallother
openhoursofthebuilding.
Room128FashionFabricsLab:Studentsstudyfabricpropertiesandhowtheyrelatetofabricusage.They
focusonfibers,fabricconstruction,andfabricnames.Thisclassroomholdsarangeoffabricresources
usefulforsupplementingcourseworkintextilescience,includingademonstrationfloorloom,microscopes
andextensivefabricsamples.

RockwellAuditorium:Withacapacityfor220students,largerlecturestyleclassesareheldinthisroom,aswell
aspublicpresentationsfromvisitinglecturersandfashionshows.Theauditoriumhasafullsoundbooth,
prosceniumstagewitharunwayextension,alargecentralprojectorscreen,andadressingroom(witha
capacityforapproximately35people)backstage.

Faculty/StaffOffices:ThesecondfloorhousesallofthefacultyofficesintheFashionSchoolaswellasthe
administrativeandadvisingoffices.

RhodesandVikingConferenceRooms:TheRhodesConferenceroomisadjacenttotheDirectorsofficeandhas
ameetingcapacityof25individuals.TheVikingConferenceroomisontheoppositesideofthesecondfloor,
betweentheparttimefacultyofficeandtheFDMfacultylounge.Ithasacapacityofapproximately12.

sewing,patternmaking,constructionandcollectiondevelopment
occurinthisroom.Studentsspendtheirdays(andlateevenings)
inthisroomconstructingtheiroriginalgarmentdesigns.Theroom
holds20industrialsewingmachinesofavarietyofseam
processes.

TheMachineKnittingLab:Thisknitwearlaboratoryholds15handknittingmachines,eachofwhicharetethered
toacomputerwithsoftwarespecifictoknitdesigninwhichstudentscanprogramaknitpatternanduseitasa
meanstodrivethemovementoftheneedlesintheknitmachine.Theroomalsohousesaproductionstandard
doublebedknittingmachinetobeusedfordemonstrationandbyadvancedknitwearstudents.

KentStateUniversityMuseum
Openedin1985,theKentStateMuseumcontainsimportantcollectionsoffashionanddecorativearts.Asnoted
onitswebsite,itseightgalleriesfeaturechangingexhibitionsofworkbymanyoftheworld'sgreatartistsand
designers.CloselylinkedtotheFashionSchool,theMuseumprovidesstudentswithfirsthandexperiencewith
historicandcontemporaryfashions,aswellascostumesrepresentingmanyoftheworld'scultures.Anextensive
collectionofAmericanglass,finefurniture,textiles,paintingsandotherdecorativeartscombinetogivecontext
tothestudyofdesign.TheMuseumservesboththeUniversityandthecommunitythroughexhibitions,public
programs,andresearchappointmentsinthecollections.

TheMuseumwasfoundedwithaninitialcontributionfromNewYorkdressmanufacturersJerrySilvermanand
ShannonRodgers.Theirgiftincluded4,000costumesandaccessories,nearly1,000piecesofdecorativeartand
a5,000volumereferencelibrary.Inthe1960s,ShannonRodgersbegancollectingwhatisnowconsideredone
ofthefinestperiodcostumecollectionsintheUnitedStates,todaytotalingmorethan40,000pieces.The
Tarter/Millercollectionofsome10,000piecesofglassformedthesecondmajorgifttotheMuseum.Together
withtheotherdecorativeartscollectedbyRodgersandSilverman,theMuseumholdsoneofthemost
comprehensiveteachingcollectionsoffashionabledesignfromthe18thcenturytothepresent.Faculty
regularlyscheduleclassroomvisitsfortheirstudentstostudycollectionsinthemuseumarchives.Allofthe
collectionsareopentoallstudents,facultyandthepublictoscheduletimetocomeintothemuseumtostudy
thepieces,eachofwhichcanbefoundinthesearchabledatabaseontheKSUMuseumwebsite.

OurNewYorkCityFashionStudioislocatedintheheartofthegarmentdistrictat315W.39thSt.,suite#402,
NewYork,NY10018.Surroundedbyfabricandaccessoryshops,fashionshowrooms,anddesignerstudios;one
thirdofallclothingmanufacturedintheUSAisdesignedandproducedin
thisneighborhood.TheDistrictishometoAmerica'sworldrenowned
fashiontalent.Thefacilityisastateoftheart,4,500squarefootspace
andincludesa50personlectureroom,16stationcomputerlabwith
instructorstation,andafashiondesignstudiofullyoutfittedwith
professionalequipment.Theindustrialmachinesinclude:12Jukisingle
needle,oneJuki5threadoverlock,andoneUnionSpecial4thread
coverstitch.ThedesignstudioisalsoequippedwiththreeNaomoto
pneumaticirons,22footlongindustrialcuttingtable,threeWolffullbody
maleformsandarm,and10Wolffemaledressforms.

TheFDMInternationalStudyAwayPrograminFlorence,Italyislocatedin
thenewlyrenovatedPalazzodeiCerchi,nearthecenterofFlorenceand
withinshortwalkingdistanceoftheDuomoCathedral.Thisprestigious
13thcenturypalacecanbefoundatthecornerofViadellaCondottaand
VicolodeiCerchi,nexttothefamousPiazzadellaSignoria.Thefacility
spans4floorsandincludestheuseoftwolargestudiospacesforfashion
designstudentsandalargelecturehall(capacityof75).Thedesignstudioshold30sewingmachinesandtables,

aswellas20femaledressforms.Thisspaceiscomanagedforuseand
instructionunderthedirectionofMarcelloFantoni,theDirectorofthe
FlorenceCampus.

Duringthesummer,fashiondesignandmerchandisingstudentsmayearn
sixKentStatecreditswhiletakingapprovedFashionSchoolcoursesatthe
ParisAmericanAcademy(PAA),inParis,France.Themonthlongprogram,
heldinJuly,includesfieldtrips,onsiteexperiences,handsonworkshops,
lectures,andactivitiesdesignedtoexpandanunderstandingoffashion.
Studentsworkinstudioenvironmentsequippedwithindustrystandardand
specializedequipmenttoengageintextilemanipulation,coutureandmillinery
techniques.
