ASSIGNMENT NO. 1
(Simple stresses and strains,
thermal engineering)
Due date: 21st September 2015
1 mark penalty for every day delay after due date

NOTE: Answer all questions. Use your own words.

1. Define stress. Give its mathematical formulation along with SI units

2. Define the following:
a. Normal stress
b. Shear stress
c. Tensile stress
d. Compressive stress
e. True stress
f. Engineering stress
g. True strain
h. Engineering strain
3. Write the engineering and true tensile stress-strain diagram for mild steel and label all the
salient points
4. A certain company decides to design an aluminium machine element using a factor of
safety of 2.0 taken against the proof stress. Two engineers, engineer A and engineer B are
given the task of designing it. While A considerers 0.2% offset strain, B decides 0.25%
offset strain to calculate the proof stress. Which design will be more safe for the same
loads and which design is likely to incur a higher material cost. Comment on your
answer. Fill the answer in a table as below.
Engineer

(More safe
(Less / More)
/ Less safe)
