ASRY Pens Major Maintenance Deal with

KOTC

C.S.Maram Launched
CS MARAM, Emarines Cable shipt being constructed
by refurbishment of a Ro-Ro vessel by the Ali & Sons
Shipyard in Abudhabi, was launched into the water
last week. Aries Design and Offshore Engineering
team are responsible for the complete Engineering
and design of the conversion works.
The vessel has been under construction for over two
years and the launching marks the completion of a
very important milestone towards expected delivery
of the vessel in March 2015.

Kuwait Oil Tankers Company (KOTC) has inked a deal

with Bahrain-based Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard
Company (ASRY) for dry-docking of record number
of 19 tankers over three years.
The value of the agreement is approximately USD 33
million, making it the largest of its kind made with
shipyards across the Arabian Gulf region.
KOTC CEO Sheikh Talal Khaled Al-Ahmed AlSabah said that ASRY will carry out repairs and dry
docking operations for 19 tankers including 12 oil
product tankers, 4 LPG tankers and 2 replenishment
oilers in addition to support boats at its yards and
perform comprehensive maintenance thereon
covering hull, tank cleaning, painting and periodic
maintenance activities for engines and various
navigation instruments.
Sheikh Talal pointed out that the recently signed
agreement shall come into force with immediate

effect where the first tanker (Jabriya 2) is set to be

received at ASRY this February.
Eight tankers will undergo maintenance in 2015
while nine tankers are scheduled in 2016 and 2
tankers in 2017.
In addition, KOTC said that the deal will enable it to
obtain favorable price as a result of prior
commitment under such agreement and to have
priority for booking dry-docking periods and
planning of the scope of work.

Liberian-Flag Ships Get Retrofit Deal

The Liberian Registry has entered into a partnership
with U.S.-based consultancy EfficientShip Finance
(ESF) to offer turnkey retrofit solutions for Liberianflag ships.
ESF will provide the financial capital needed for each
project, and assume responsibility for technology
performance and fuel volatility risk, along with the
technical supervision and monitoring to perform
retrofits. Owners and operators remit to ESF a
proportion of the amount they save on fuel costs, or
which they receive in the form of additional
negotiated hire. The retrofit projects require no
upfront capital by owners and, since the payments
are always a share of the savings, there is an ongoing
net benefit to customers.
The ESF global programme includes a mix of fuel
efficiency retrofit solutions for each target vessel,
based on its trading pattern, age, size, speed, and
consumption. The technologies used include, among
others, wake-improving ducts, rudder bulbs and fins,
protracted tip propellers, engine improvements,
smooth coatings, and performance and trim
optimising software.
For ships trading within ECA zones, the programme
may include the installation of exhaust scrubber
systems or the conversion of engines to LNG dualfuel, to comply with emissions requirements which
came into effect on January 1, 2015.
The Liberian Registry is also offering special tonnage
tax discounts for ships participating in this green
initiative. Each ship in the programme will be
entitled to a 50 per cent annual tonnage tax discount
in the first year, and up to a 25 per cent discount in
both the second and third years.

Economic Boom Puts Pressure on Indias

Ports
Indias economic growth looks set to surpass Chinas
for the first time in 2016, lending support to both
east and westbound container trade expansion,
according to Drewry Maritime Research.
However, the predicted uptick in Indian container
trade depends on the ability of the new government
to deliver on promises. India is currently struggling
to realise its full potential, with port infrastructure
shortcomings and a creaking inland transportation
sector. Both of these issues have so far frustrated
attempts to boost its global manufacturing presence.
While money has been committed to port projects
to remove congestion, more private investment is
needed, according to Drewry.
India has cemented its position for significant trade
growth in the medium term, which will feed growth
in Europe-Middle East/South Asia routes, Drewry
reports. After a 20 year hiatus, free trade agreement
talks are back on the table between Europe and
India as the latter strives to boost business flows
between the two countries.
Eastbound Europe to Middle East/South Asia
container traffic had already recorded year-on-year
growth of 18.3% by November; with trade relations
improving this growth is expected to continue, says
Drewry. Westbound traffic rose by 6.6% y/y over the
same period.
Middle Eastern trade is also positive with Europe to
Middle East and westbound movements up, but the
Middle East may not share the Indian wave of
progress for long as the current strength of the
Middle East-Europe trade is under pressure from
weaker prices for oil and other commodities, which
are suppressing growth prospects, Drewry reports.
Ongoing political turmoil in the region is also
keeping an upbeat outlook in check.
Drewry says that the fundamentals supporting India
trade growth are clearly there and continue to
support this route. However, the current changeable
state of the Middle East region will make it harder
for this route to nurture container trade growth.
