Councilor to Giza Governor East Of Giza District • East Of Giza district is a heavy traffic area with large occupancy density that needs special care for study and application of energy conservation . • East of Giza includes Embaba , El Nile road , Kit-Kat , Sudan etc that presents heavy traffic during rush hours . • Decrees of lighting level was not a subject to be discussed because of security reasons , the only accepted way is to keep lighting level within present accepted level at least or to increase to better levels , while decrees the consumed energy . Working Environment Nile Road Nile road Nile Road Observation • Large energy consumption that accedes limits • Lamps need to be changed 2 times year • Complains from lighting level • Low Power factor even with capacitor connected • Large ballast mortality rates • Why 4 luminaries of 400W lamps each is used ? Field test Data • Line Voltage is dramatically different from 260 Volts in the areas near to the transformer while can be < 200 at district ends areas Power Factor effect Targets • To decrees consumed power while increase lighting efficiency and level • To improve Power Factor • To overcome the line voltage changes • To keep Lamp voltage stable despite the line voltage changes • To control the street lighting performance from central control room for start , stop and peak load management Study out lines • To use electronic ballast with dimming control • Ballast to be with wide voltage range for input from 160 ~ 270 Volt while able to keep the lamp voltage stable too 100Volts + or - 5 V • Ballast to be with over voltage protection ( over 440Volt ) • Ballast to be with delay start to overcome practical field installation facts and bad contacts etc.. • Ballast to fit inside the lighting fixture ( working environment > 50C ) • Economic Pay-back to not exceed 1 year • To use digital controllers to control peak load and lighting starting time . Study results • The energy audit study show that payback after 6 month • The energy audit study show good technical figures that has met Giza Governorate criteria • Pilot test of samples proof the product stability and good technical performance • Pilot Project to use 1480 units of 250W to replace 400W lamps with magnetic ballast was approved , installation started in Dec 2009. Before and After Results • Lighting Level under center of 400W poles using Magnetic Ballast = 48 Lux • Light Level under center of 250W poles using electronic ballast = 169 Lux • The light level test is made after 3 month of installation to make sure of lamp light stability • The test of average power of separate fixture magnetic and electronic was not possible due to advertisements installation on same poles • Separate test of 250W electronic Ballast Type FT-250WDD3P average power during 11 hours using program No 4 is about 202W with PF > 99% at any voltage from 140 ~ 265V • 400W Lamp with Magnetic ballast consumption at 235V was 564 Watt , PF=0.90 with Capacitor and 0.47 with NO capacitor • Lamp will not start at 190Volt .. Field Energy Audit Field Energy Audit Appreciation and security Security and safety What about saving ?? • While installing the new electronic ballast • The consumption billing show gradually saving results • We are expecting savings to increase as much as we go ahead and install larger amounts of electronic ballast • The results from the billing invoices before installation and after installing 500 Pcs ballast is as follow : Savings Saving While installing Saving results for 500 Units Conclusion • East Giza District succeeded to save > 70% of past years consumed energy while increasing light level by 200% and to keep light depreciation within standards limits by using electronic dimming ballast . • The expected savings after full implementation will exceed the study figures because of the high line voltage facts . • A fully periodic lighting level test and energy audit will be running on monthly basses after the full project installation • Giza Governorate will stop the use of 400W lamps and will replace them with 250W with electronic ballast . Thank You
