 COLOURFASTNESSTODRYHEAT(EXCLUDINGPRESSING)


Colourfastnessofdyedarticleisnotonlyaffectedbywashing,waterorabrasion(rubbing)butalso
byheatinmanyforms.Eg.Pressing,dryheatorheatwithmoistureetc.Somedyesaresensitiveto
heatandhencecanfade/bleedduetoeffectofheat.Thisistheverycausethistesthasbeendevised.

Thistestisintendedtoassessresistanceofcolourtotheactionofdryheatonlyandnotbypressing.
The method is applicable to textiles of all kinds and can be conducted at different temperatures
dependinguponstabilityoffibres.Therecanbeinfluenceofchemicalsusedduringdyeing,printing,
chemicalprocessingandphysicalfactorsoncolourchangeandstaining.

Aspecimenundertestincontactwithspecifiedundyedfabricsisexposedtodryheatbyclosecontact
with medium. The change in colour and staining of undyed fabric is assessed with the help of
standardgreyscales.

Mainly,therearetwomethodstoevaluatethecolourfastnesstodryheat
1) ISO105P01:1993Colourfastnesstodryheat(ExcludingPressing)
2) AATCCTestMethod1172004ColourfastnesstoHeat:Dry(ExcludingPressing)

Procedureinbrief:Aspecimenofthesampleundertestistreatedwithdryheatfor30secs
under a specified temperature and pressure. The treated specimens are conditioned and
evaluatedusinggreyscaleforcolourchangeandstainingonadjacentfabric.

Agarmentmadeincontrastcolourswithredcolourwasreceivedinlaboratorytoinvestigatethe
causeofstainingontheadjacentlightportionwhileironing.Thesamplewastestedforvarious
colourfastnessparametersindividuallycolourwise.Itwasnoticedthatredcolourwashavingpoor
colourfastnesstodryheatresultingintransferofcolourontotheattachedwhiteadjacentfabric
swatch.

A white trouser in 100% polyester with black tape at side seam was received with complaint of
colourtransferontheenamelcoatedbuttonwhichwassewnadjacenttoblacktape.Thecolour
fastnesstodryheat/sublimationbothweretested.Itwasfoundthatundertheinfluenceofheat
black colour from tape was getting transferred on to the adjacent white background as well as
enamelcoatingofbutton.

A white ladies dress with multi coloured all over embroidery was received with complaint of
colour transfer on to white. After investigation we found that green coloured embroidery was
havingpoorfastnesstoheatresultinginstainingofwhite.
