Groups toiled away in parts of Plimmerton to make splendid spaces for us all to
enjoy. Taupo Crescent residents turned out in force to beautify two public
walkways on their street. Twenty two people worked all morning - picking up
rubbish, painting, weeding and getting to know their neighbours a little better.

Vandalism in Karehana Bay scenic reserve upsets kindy kids

Leo from Plimmerton Kindergarten tells us about some very distressing vandalism
in this area which has made the reserve unsafe for the small children who were
using the reserve every week. Teenagers have been drinking and breaking
bottles there. There is broken glass everywhere. And they have demolished a
hut the children used to play in ripping off corrugated iron and generally making
the area unsafe. There is a letter on our website www.plimmerton.org.nz/topstories/karehana-reserve/ that the vandals should read. Plus photos of the
damage.
Please notify police 238 1400 if you know who these offenders are.
Security reminders
Police have done a letterbox drop here with lots of useful tips about keeping your
property and family safe. Remember if a crime has been committed call 238 1400 and
report it! If offenders are still in the area, dont muck about, call 111.

Public consultation security cameras

This is the fourth community notice about security cameras for Plimmertons entrances
and we are still seeking your advice and input.
Following up on residents concerns we have investigated options and secured quotes
for cameras to go at the rail crossing and Airlie Road entrances to Plimmerton. These
will be installed in early 2016 if we are successful in securing the funding we are
currently exploring. We are working with Porirua City Council and the police to tie up
all the details. Signage will be discreet and minimal.
The main points to consider are:

The cameras record vehicle model and registration numbers.

The footage is reviewed only when a crime has been reported.
Footage is only ever reviewed by police.
There is no way footage can be reviewed by anyone else.
Footage not viewed within an allocated time period is deleted.
The footage is secure and evidence quality.
The purpose is to secure convictions of people committing criminal
offences.
Without this resource police cannot follow up on vehicle movements
relating to crimes committed here.

Public consultation school kindy traffic safety area

This is the third community notice about the Slow Zone signage for the central village
area and we are again seeking your advice and input.
Following concerns expressed by parents collecting and dropping off children at peak
times and other residents with issues relating to traffic safety we are working with the
roading team at Porirua City Council to come up with a series of safety measures. On
our web site there will soon be a map of the area showing where three SLOW ZONE signs
will be placed. These are reminders for locals and an alert for visitors that at times this
is a busy area with a primary school, kindergarten, Plunket rooms, a church, a crche
and toy library and a medical centre. As shown on the map the signage relates only to
the central village from Bath Street on Steyne Ave at one end and from the cutting on
Sunset Parade at the other. The third sign will be on Motuhara Road just past the kids
pathway down to the school.
Thanks to kindergarten and school parents for your valuable input to this process.
The key points are:

This is signage ONLY

There may also be some painting on the road in these areas to reinforce
the message

There are NO speed bumps proposed

After a period this measure will be reviewed

Porirua city is looking at a system of school zones which would have a 30k
limit around all schools in the region at key times. This is one of their
long term objectives

Policing and monitoring of the zone will be implemented concurrently

with the sign installation and probable road painting

A pedestrian crossing on Beach Road is being looked at again.

Tagging removal - who you gonna call?

If you spot tags please call the council 237 5089 or email enquiries@pcc.govt.nz so they
can be quickly removed.
Porirua also has a team of heroes who get out and about and remove tagging wherever
they see it. Richard Witheford-Smith says, You can join this select group of community
volunteers who meet over coffee to discuss tactics. Contact me
rwitheford@pcc.govt.nz and Ill let you know where the next coffee meet is. Our
shout!
A special end-of-year shout to the team who work in Plimmerton to remove tags so that
most of us never have to see them. Great stuff!

Cell phone users will be pinged

During recent traffic monitoring seven people were spotted driving on Steyne
Ave and using cell phones in one ten minute period!

New bike trail opened in Spicer Botanical Park

This trail links to Te Rahui o Rangituhi (formerly Colonial Knob). A series of
trails is planned for the area of different difficulty levels. Mana Cycle Groups
Mark Harris is confident that this will give people a reason to come to the city.
The network of trails will eventually cover 550 hectares and is a step in the
creation of a national standard park on Poriruas western hills.
