APPLICATION FORM FOR PARTICIPANTS

Stop Thinking about Differences and Smile (STDS)

The International Youth Exchange (YE) STDS will take place from the 16th to
the 21st of September excluding travel dates, in Olho, Portugal.
This YE will gather 30 participants from 6 countries, namely, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Greece, FYROM/Macedonia, Poland, Portugal and
Serbia.
"Stop thinking about Differences and Smile" is an international youth
exchange which perceives as a main objective the creation of a space where
young people from different European countries can share their knowledge
(assumptions, facts, stereotypes), opinions and experiences about Sexual
Transmitted Diseases (STD's) and the discrimination exerted by the society
towards people infected with STD's. This youth exchange intends to promote
both Health and Civic Education.
Although, one should expect that in the XXI century, discrimination towards
people infected with sexual transmitted diseases (STD's), would be an issue
of the past, it is still a major concern in Europe. In Portugal, the prevalence of
HIV is of 0,6% to 0,7%, and its mortality rate of 22% - 23%, while the
hepatitis B virus represents the 9th cause for death for Portuguese adults.
The young people infected with chronic diseases face discrimination at many
levels in Portugal, such as medical, employment related and social.
Even though the governmental and non-governmental organizations work
hard to prevent the transmission of STD's, and promote and make accessible
all information necessary, there is still a need to inform the general
population, in order to promote awareness, comprehension, tolerance, antidiscrimination and social inclusion.
Adopting an active and healthy lifestyle are the best way to prevent the
occurrence of such diseases, but creating an environment of tolerance and
understanding can also improve the cohesion of the society, promoting a
sense of community.
In this YE will participate 30 young participants and leaders from Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Greece, FYROM/Macedonia, Poland, Portugal and Serbia
Each national team has to present 4 participants and 1 team leader that
will act as core team member.

Travel expenses of participants will be reimbursed 70% based on the cheapest

travel ways and according to the following cost limitations:
Bosnia: 400 euro/person

Greece: 375

euro/person
FYROM/MAcedonia: 450 euro/person

Poland: 350

euro/person
Portugal: 15 euro/person

Serbia: 400

euro/person
A participation fee of 20 euro/person is going to be deducted from the
reimbursement.
The host organization for this YE will be MoJu Associao Movimento Juvenil em
Olhio. This event will be held in Olho, a very traditional city in the south of
Portugal.

Why do you want to participate in this event?

Earlier in my volunteering, for a short period of time, I had been a p eer

educator for prevention of reproductive health (HIV/AIDS and STD). At that time, all
we used to talk about was STD and its prevention, but we`ve never mentioned STD
infected people. STDs can affect not only the health but social well-being of the
both individuals and community. Beside being excited about gaining more
useful, actual and practical knowledge, this event can give me the unique
opportunity to develop my skills to promote a positive and supportive attitude
to one of the most vulnerable category of people. Participation in this event
could introduce me to different, alternative approaching methods, techniques
and tools for inclusion of those neglected and marginalized persons, all
together with quality standards and requirements of Portugal and EU. In my
environment, STD is considered a taboo theme and that is a reason why
infected people are rarely mentioned and why their social image is full of
prejudices. This event is a step forward towards changing all that and that`s
why I`d be happy to participate.
What comes to your mind when you relate the topics Sexual
transmitted Diseases and Social inclusion?
Before I participated in the Living Library project, all the knowledge I had
about these topics were fact-related. Then I`ve met a teenager whose Living Book
was entitled A person living with HIV, who gave me an insight into this
complicated, long-lasting disease. He also told me about the social impact of
high-risk sexual behaviors among adolescents, suffering of STD infected
adolescents, their pain, anxiety and depression, often with uncertain outcome,
including their feeling of unfair treatment and disadvantages. So now, when I
relate these topics, I realize that the STD infected people are not only hovering
between life and death, but they also have to face disturbances in their social and
family life. They are not only afraid of health consequences, but they are also
afraid of insults and disparagement on the grounds of their health status.
Thousands of people out there are facing this problem. The community
stigmatizes them in a vulgar way (e.g. call them promiscuous) and often does not
show enough willingness to support them in a way which would enable the
unimpeded enjoyment and equal protection of their rights and freedoms.

How are you going to contribute to the success of the event?

By active participation, sharing the experience and knowledge

obtained on previous seminars on this theme. In interactions and discussions
with others, I will be able to analyze problematic and critical situations of
young people. Since I have double origin (Chinese and Serbian), I could serve
as a resource for a cross-cultural understanding as well. I will do my best to
make the most of my creative-artistic skills, excellent computer literacy,
report writing skills, social presentation and good command of written and
spoken English language.
How do you think you can contribute to the follow-up of this project
after this event?
At various levels from reporting about this seminar, covered by
media, since raising the general publicity in this topic is an excellent means
to raise the awareness and better understanding of this issue that is usually
avoided in public, to the participation in advocacy for making a sustainable
support program, including activities for prevention as an educational tool. In
any case, I am ready to assist Resource Centre Bor in forming a realistic basis
for helping young people to improve their value orientation and in carrying
out the required launchings and local campaign. I am willing to take part in
those voluntary and public actions in the community, such as a street performance
and charity concert or even to perform a training for Resource Centre Bor in

the field of giving individual and group support to these medically and
socially deprived people.
