PROPOSED WATER EFILLING STATION

The proposed water refilling station is located at 219, Rizal Avenue
Antonio, Labason Zamboanga del Norte is owned by Mrs. Paulita O. Calumba
(here referred to as proponent).
The source of water, which is defined in this study as refilling water or
product water, is refined into a pollutant and contaminant free product
using purely non chemical processes.
These include Media Pre Filtration ( 1 set pressure Type Activated
Carbon Filter, 1 set pressure type dual media, 1 set pressure type ion
exchange/ water conditioner with SS jacket & programmable automatic multi
port valve brine tank), RO MODULE (1 set high pressure centrifugal pump,
1 set RO vessel, 1 pc reverse osmosis membrane hydranautics, 1 set inlet
valve, 1 set flush valve, pressure regulator, 1 set computer controller, 1 set
low pressure switch, 2 sets flowmeter), Cartridge Pre Filtration (2 sets
stainless steel filter housing, 2 pcs micro filter), Cartridge Post Filtration
& Sterilization (2 sete stainless steel filter Housing, 2 pcs micro filter),
Cartridge Post Filtration Sterilization (2 sets stainless steel filter housing, 1
pc micro filter, 1 pc carbon block cartridge, 1 set ultraviolet system),
Mineral & Alkaline Post Filtration & Sterilization (4 sets stainless
steel filter housing, 1 pc micro filter, 1 pc carbon block cartridge, 1pc
ceramic filter, 1 set ultraviolet system). See Annex A
The concept of the proponent is basically to bring the bottling plant
closer to its customers. The water store follows the manufacturing practices
of Bottled Water Plants. It is in fact a miniaturized bottling facility and
procedures the same, if not better quality product. In a water store, the
customers usually bring in their own containers which is then washed,
disinfected and then is filled right before the customer.
Since the water store is a miniaturized bottling plant, the capital cost is
much lower. Clients dont carry the heavy cost of bottles since most of them
will bring in their own containers. It is also located near its clients, therefore,
pick up or delivery cost are very low. Due to the reduction in cost, products
can be sold as much as 50% lower than other bottled water product.

The source of water is from the local water district Labason with the
laboratory water analysis results for physical / chemical and bacteriological
tests. See Annex A (quality of water supply)

TYPE OF EQUIPMENT
A. ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER
Activated Carbon is the most successful tool so far developed for
removing tastes and odors from water supplies. Carbon will remove a
great number of organic compounds from water. The following types of
organic matter are removed to large extent:
a. BOD, COD. Phenols
b. Saturated Oils
c. Chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides
d. Many taste and odor compounds
e.
Activated Carbon is prepared by slowly heating coal, walnut
shells, or hard wood in the absence of air, then washing and chemically
treating to remove impurities. Almost all the surface area is within a
carbon granule. There are roughly 500 1000 square meter of surface
area for one gram of activated carbon.
B. CARTRIDGE
Cartridge filter can polish water to a high clarity. They are simple and
can be replaced with ease and speed. The housing too, is simple and
can be easily sanitized or replaced if needed be. It is very suitable for
bottling operations. For purposes of the water stores, the cartridge
filters are rated at 5 microns.

C. ULTRA VIOLET
The biocidal effects of ultra violet (UV) have been known since it was
established that short wavelength UV was responsible for microbial
decay often associated with sunlight. By early 1940s, design guideline
for UV disinfecting were proposed. Ultra Violet has been accepted for
treating potable water; however, due to having no residual effect, it is
advisable for point of use application.

D. REVERSE OSMOSIS
Osmosis is when pure water and salt solution are on opposite sides of a
semi permeable membrane and dilutes the salt solution. Because of
the difference in salt concentration, pure water flows through the
membrane as though a pressure were being applied to it. The effective
driving force causing the flow is called osmotic pressure. The
magnitude of the osmotic pressure depends on the concentration of
the salt solution and the temperature of the water. When the pressure
on the salt solution is sufficiently greater than the osmotic pressure,
fresh water diffuse through the membranes in the opposite direction to
normal osmotic flow. Reverse Osmosis is used in our industry for some
of the reasons that ionization is used to remove excess dissolved
minerals from a water source in order to improve taste and provide a
margin of safety in meeting standards.

SUSTAINABILITY AND MAINTENANCE
PERIODIC REPLACEMENT OF EQUIPMENT
Activated Carbon

It is recommended to follow the frequent backwashing of activated

carbon to obtain its maximum efficiency. Since the backwashing cannot
remove the organic and inorganic chemicals that adhere to the surfaces of
the activated carbon, it needs to be recharged occasionally. Carbon
recharging is done quarterly.
Cartridge Filter
It is advisable to wash the cartridge filter. Washing cannot remove the
materials that have clogged in the very small pores of the cartridge filters.
Cartridge filters should be changed regularly to maintain proper pump
pressure and flow. Filter replacement is done monthly or if the differential
pressure between the feed pressure of cartridge filter and feed pressure of
the R.O. is more than 10 psi.
Reverse Osmosis Membrane
One of the proper cares for Reverse Osmosis Membrane is to take good
care of the pre purification filtration system, i.e. multi media, activated
carbon and the cartridge filters. However, the membrane has to be cleaned
regularly to ensure efficient in the purification of water. Membrane cleaning
is done every 4 to 6 months.
Ultraviolet Sterilizer
Daily physical inspection of the ultraviolet sterillizer is recommended to
check whether the equipment is working properly. The ultra violet lamp emits
the required short wave length irradiation at a certain period of time. Ultra
violet lamp replacement is done every 10 to 12 months.

Polishing Carbon Filter

Like the activated carbon, the polishing carbon filter traps the organic
and inorganic chemicals but unlike the activated carbon, the polishing
carbon does not have a backwashing procedure to ensure effectiveness of
this equipment. Polishing carbon filter is replaced quarterly.
