A Kootenay Christmas
Let the music touch you...
On Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19 at

Saint Saviours Pro Cathedral in Nelson, classical guitarist
and composer Rita Deane and the vocal trio Ananta (Allison Girvan, Nomi Kiss and Kathleen Neudorf) will collaborate in a musical offering designed to inspire peace,
love and shared community during the holiday season.
Joining Deane and Ananta in these concerts will be the
Kootenay Christmas Youth Choir, a choir of 18 young
voices directed by Allison Girvan.
The concerts will feature both traditional and newly
composed music. Five new compositions by Rita Deane
will be performed for the first time in these concerts. This
project has been made possible with the generous support
of the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance - Columbia
Basin Trust. Both concerts start at 7:30 pm with doors
opening at 7 pm. Tickets are $20 and available at The
Music Store, 580 Baker Street in Nelson.

World Kindness Day Celebrated
It was on November 13, World Kindness Day, when

Nelson & District Credit Union staff each carried out
a random act of cooperation to start their work day. To
celebrate kindness, community and cooperation, each
employee played a role by identifying a standout volunteer in the community.
On November 27, the Credit Union donated $100 to
the local organization the chosen volunteer is affiliated
with, in the name of that outstanding individual. Nelson staff helped to distribute $3500 back to several local
organizations.
We feel that recognizing volunteers is the best way to
celebrate community.

Home Insurance Condition That Can

Result In A Claim Denial
Square One recently conducted a survey to determine

awareness levels of a common home insurance condition
that, if not met, eliminates coverage for damage from frozen pipes. The condition requires homeowners, who are
away for more than a few days, take the following steps:
Turn off water at the homes main source and drain all
pipes or arrange for someone to enter the home daily and
ensure heat is maintained.
Surprisingly, 91% of the 1,200 people surveyed were not
aware of this condition. With the cold temperatures we
experience across Canada, its important the insurance

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE
Linda Rollins has joined the Primary Health
Staff while Danielle Newson continues her
leave. Linda received her nursing degree from
the University of Victoria. She has worked 28
years as a registered nurse in various settings:
Emergency, intensive care, case management,
and in public health. Linda has worked
throughout the Kootenay Boundary region,
in the Okanagan, in northern Manitoba with
First Nations populations, and in Bangladesh
doing international volunteer work. She is particularly interested in rural and remote health
and how to improve health in medically underserved populations. Linda loves gardening,
hiking, and yoga. She resides at six mile with
her husband, Adrian. Welcome, Linda! She can

RESPECTING THE GIFTS OF FAMILY,
FRIENDS AND FOOD
Do we really need one more article about
eating well over the holidays? Yes! Especially
one that points out that healthy eating isnt necessarily the same thing as nutritious eating.
Healthy eating goes beyond preventing
heart disease, getting enough of a vitamin,
or having a healthy weight. Food plays an
honoured role as a centerpiece at holiday
time. This is when friends and family gather,
share stories, and strengthen or renew bonds.
We feast not just on food, but on each
others company and energy. So this is no
time for a diet mentality. And yet its also not
the time to take life and health lightly, but to
respect the gifts we have. How can we eat
respectfully, while celebrating and enjoying?
Provide lots of healthy options. Im a monkey-see-monkey-eat kind of person. If I see
healthy stuff, Ill eat it. Ive found this to be
true of young and old alike.
A platter or two of colourful veggies with dip

gives everyone something other than treats
to keep their hands and mouth occupied. Carbonated water is a wonderful replacement
for some of the pop and juices typically used
as a mixer for drinks and punch. Mix salted
nuts half and half with unsalted nuts. Keep
a bowl filled with mandarin oranges. I could
make a longer list, but you get the idea.
Manage the abundance of treats. Once
again, the monkey-see-monkey-eat habit
comes into play! Have smaller plates of treats
out at certain times of the day and put them
out of sight the rest of the time. Since I like
to have one piece of everything, instead of
putting all of the treat choices on the plate,
try putting just two or three out at one time
and switching them up at another time. Tiny
servings let us try a variety of treats without
overindulging over the years I find I am cutting my Nanaimo bars into one inch squares
and making smaller cookies.
Eat mindfully. We can get so enthralled by
the fun our taste buds are having that we
forget to enjoy the evening and the people.
If we ignore how our body feels and overstuff
ourselves, we can end up regretting it later. I
remind myself (and my dad) that leftovers are
just as delicious.
Get moving. Try getting involved in cleaning
up. Moving around is much better than sitting
around after a big meal. It helps with blood
sugar and triglyceride levels after a big meal
and it gives me a chance to make some plates
of leftovers-to-go for the guests.
If you think about it, those of us who struggle with overindulgence at holiday time are so
lucky. Enjoy the feast of family, friends, fun and
food this holiday season. What a gift to have!

MINDFULNESS AWARENESS
PRACTICES (MAPS)
If you are interested in positively changing
your relationship to stress, anxiety, depression,
coping in a healthier way with chronic pain,
having healthier sleep patterns and an overall
greater sense of wellness and energy, then
cultivating practices of mindful awareness,
(MAPS) could be of potential benefit to you.
Mindfulness can be defined as the
practice of paying purposeful and non-judgmental attention in the present moment to
our changing states of mind and body, and
through this practice developing more capacity for compassion and emotional regulation.
Current scientific research is showing that
our brain is neuroplastic or capable of lasting
change. Although mindfulness meditation
is a long term practice, studies are showing
that in as little as 8 weeks, practicing for 15
minutes a day can change the density of grey
matter in the brain in the areas of compassion, empathy, and emotional regulation.

At Kaslos Selkirk College
Theres a lot is happening at the Selkirk College Kaslo

Learning Centre these days.
Students continue to upgrade their skills through ongoing Adult Basic Education and Community Education
courses, but theres plenty more. For the first time ever,
Selkirk College is offering a Health Care Assistant Program in Kaslo. This six month program features a blend of
classroom and online learning and practicum experience.
The program starts on January 4, 2016.
There is a demonstrated need for more health care
assistants in Kaslo and the surrounding region; our aging
demographic supports continued employment growth
in this field says Teresa Petrick, Chair of the Health and
Human Services program at Selkirk College. Graduates
of this program are important and respected members of
the health care team.

Kaslos Grammas to Grammas loves your silver!!! And

your loose change. We have collected over $9000 to date
from these jars and over $32,000 from various projects.
The money goes directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundations Grandmothers Campaign to help African grandmothers who are raising their orphaned grandchildren.
Orphaned due to the AIDS pandemic.
The Foundation currently funds 140 projects in 15 countries. There are easily another 140 projects SLF would love
to support, but they cannot fund them, as the foundation
doesnt have the money. In the absence of funding, thousands of women and children are struggling to survive. This
is not hyperbole, it is the exact truth. The big sources of
finance from countries around the world have cut back or
stagnated. SLF struggles valiantly to make up the difference.

2015 VWS Bear Smart Program

Goes Into Hibernation
The Valhalla Wilderness Society Bear Smart Program

has wrapped up another season of helping residents coexist with bears. Evelyn Kirkaldy, VWS Slocan Valley Bear
Smart coordinator, covering the area from New Denver to
Crescent Valley, answered calls on the Bear Smart Hotline
throughout the season and distributed educational brochures and Slocan Valley Bear Smart flyers to homes and
various retail locations. Lighthearted cartoons with serious messages about attractant
management regularly appeared
in various print and online
media. Evelyn set up information tables during the Columbia Basin Culture Tour and at
the Garlic Fest in New Denver
and spoke to interested parties
about being bear smart at home
as well as in the woods. She was,
as always, very happy to answer
questions about bruin habits and
behaviour.
The use of electric fencing
around orchards, beehives,
chicken coops and livestock
pens, was promoted again this
season. Gillian Sanders with
Grizzly Bear Coexistence Solutions, provided advice and help
with fence installation and with
funding from Valhalla Wilderness Society, RDCK and CBT,
was able to provide 50% cost
sharing for electric fencing.
This season a Bear Smart in the
Woods presentation was created
for the Winlaw school, grade five/
six class in preparation for their
fall outdoor adventure programs.
Connecting with kids and speaking to them about bears is one of
the most rewarding parts of the job;
it is always met with enthusiasm.
Look for the Get Bear Smart in
the Woods presentation in April
in the next Slocan Valley recreation guide, an entertaining and
informative evening about staying safe in bear country with
Evelyn Kirkaldy.
The most powerful instrument
for creating change is for citizens to actively engage with their

Ecosociety Winter Craft Fair
The West Kootenay EcoSociety is once again putting on

its annual Winter Craft Fair. This years fair will be for just
one day, Saturday, December 12, so dont miss out. This
wonderful event will take place at the Central School gym
at 811 Stanley Street in Nelson and will run from 10 am
to 4 pm. All of the products that will be offered are handmade locally so you know you are supporting the local
economy when you shop at this fair.
Customers will recognize many of the vendors from
the downtown, Cottonwood and MarketFest events that
are also run by the EcoSociety. Like the summer markets
there will be a wide verity of items for sale including body
care products, clothes, hats, photography, baked goods,
amazing pottery and much, much more.
The December 12 Winter Craft Fair will be the last
chances of the 2015 market season to shop at these market
vendors stalls. If you miss this opportunity you will have
to wait until mid-May 2016 when Cottonwood Community Market starts up once again for a whole new market
season. A $2 donation is being requested at the door to
help EcoSociety cover the costs of this market.
If you are looking for something distinctive and unique
for the special people in your life dont miss out on being
a part of the joyful and fantastic 2015 EcoSociety Winter

pipes can freeze. As the water freezes into ice, it expands
and causes the pipes to rupture. As the ice melts, significant water damage can occur. Obviously, the situation worsens if the homeowner is away when the pipes
freeze so its understandable that insurance providers have
imposed certain conditions on homeowners.
As our survey found, most people simply dont know
about this common home insurance condition, says
Vander Zalm. Even if you do, its critical that you review
your own policy because the condition varies from one
provider to the next. For example, some policies require
you take steps if away for more than four days while others provide seven days. And complying with the condition
might be harder than you expect.
So before you leave your home for more than a few
days this winter, speak with your insurance provider or
