Chapter One: The Decision
Leave him ALONE!
James and Sirius looked around. Jamess free hand jumped to his hair
again.
It was one of the girls from the lake edge. She had thick, dark red hair
that fell to her shoulders and startlingly green almond-shaped eyes.
All right, Evans? said James, and the tone of his voice was suddenly
pleasant, deeper, more mature.
Leave him alone, Lily repeated. She was looking at James with every
sign of great dislike. Whats he done to you?
Well, said James, appearing to deliberate the point, its more the
fact that he exists, if you know what I mean
Many of the surrounding watchers laughed, Sirius and Wormtail
included, but Lupin, still apparently intent on his book, didnt, and
neither did Lily.
You think youre funny, she said coldly. But youre just an arrogant,
bullying toerag, Potter. Leave him alone.
I will if you go out with me, Evans, said James quickly. Go on Go
out with me, and Ill never lay a wand on old Snivelly again.
I wouldnt go out with you if it was a choice between you and the giant
squid, said Lily.
James Potter woke up as he heard a loud growl from the bed next to his.
As James sat up he put his hand instinctively to his messy, jet-black hair.
He looked over to see the shaggy-haired head of his best friend, Sirius
Black. Sirius covers were being thrown around as his arms and legs
were moving around as though he was running on all fours.
James chuckled as he thought aloud, Probably dreaming of chasing that
salamander again.
Looking to his left he saw his other two friends Remus Lupin and Peter
Pettigrew. It was then that he first noticed the pain in his side. He, Sirius,
and Peter had been out the night before trying to force Remus Lupin into
the Shrieking Shack while he was transformed into a werewolf and
James had received a nasty cut on his left side. James, Sirius, and Peter
were all unregistered Animagi, which meant that they could turn into
animals illegally. James transformed into a stag, Sirius a shaggy black
dog, and Peter a rat. The rest of the group had cuts and scratches, Remus
had the most as he was forced to bite and scratch himself because of the
lack of humans to attack. Peter was seemingly unscathed as he was the
smallest of the group. They called themselves the Marauders. They were
known for being handsome and bright-with the exception of Peter, but
he was still a Marauder and that counted for something- and of course,
for their legendary pranks. These pranks were mostly directed to Severus
Snape or, as they called him, Snivellus.
James layed down again, careful not to put weight on his left side. He
kept having the same dream over and over; well really it was more a
memory. He could still hear Lily screaming at him. It had happened
about a year ago but it still pained him to remember the look of pure
loathing she gave him. James had liked Lily since he had first looked
into her emerald green eyes in their first year, practically five years ago.
Now he knew it was more than a crush, James was in love with Lily. He
loved everything about her, from her fiery red hair, and personality to
match, to her perfect curves.
He knew she didnt like him but he couldnt help being fascinated by
her. She was probably the only girl who didnt fawn over him. She was
the brightest witch in the sixth year, and she wasnt overly concerned
with make-up or her appearance. She made sure she looked good- well
in Jamess opinion beautiful- and that was it. Basically in James eyes
there was never a girl so perfect. Hed had girlfriends, sure, but he
always carried a deep passion for Lily and only Lily. Every night he
would sit up late thinking of ways to impress her and get her to go out
with him. But tonight as he rested his head on his pillow he realized
something, I need to change, he said to himself, For Lily. Tonight he
acknowledged the reason she didnt like him. She thought he was an
arrogant, bullying toerag. He sat up for a while thinking.
Eventually he fell asleep, thinking only of his promise to himself and, of
course, the red
headed beauty Lily Evans.

Chapter 2: Easier Said Than Done

Prongs get up! James heard Sirius yell before feeling the covers fly off
him.
Okay, okay, Im up, James replied, whats the rush?

Today is the last Hogs- why are you smiling? Remus inquired. James
had just remembered his second dream of Lily last night. This one was
much more enjoyable, though. They had been sitting under the big tree by
the lake talking when Lily gave James a kiss on the cheek and then had
lain down on his chest.
He was probably having another dream about Evans before we woke
him up, Sirius said as if it was normal for James to have dreams about
Lily, which it was. So what happened this time? he said mockingly.
Feeling his cheeks get hot, James redirected the attention to Sirius. What
about you Padfoot? Catch that salamander yet?
Actually it was a cat tonight, and I didnt catch it. It got away before I
could catch up to it.
I swear, Padfoot, sometimes I think you should just stay a dog, James
half-laughed.
You know he has a point, but the thing is Jadzia would probably go
through separation anxiety without Sirius glued to her lips every five
seconds, teased Remus.
Shut up, Moony, barked Sirius. Then smiling he said I can see what
you mean Prongs, said Sirius laughing at the barking noise that had
come out of his mouth.
Peter laughed squeakily realizing it was safe to laugh because Sirius had
found James comment amusing. Lets go down to breakfast, he said in
a voice as squeaky as his laugh.
All right Wormtail, Sirius said still chuckling a bit. Im starved.
They made their way down into the common room, where they stood
waiting for the girls. James just stood there lost in his thoughts of Lily
and how pretty she was. He was brought back down to earth only when
Sirius knocked into him after his girlfriend, Jadzia, jumped on him.
Remus made his way to the stairs and offered his hand to his girlfriend,
Sidney. She took the offered hand.
James was lost in his thoughts again, this time brought back when Lily
came downstairs. She was wearing tight jeans that faded at the knees and
a green tank top that brought out her eyes and at the same time, hugged
her curves nicely. Over it she wore a plain white button down shirt over it,
which she buttoned half way, leaving the tank top visible to passerby. Her
hair was slightly wavy and she let it fall over one shoulder.
Before he could stop himself he said, Lily you look hot.
Lily just scowled at him. Peter, James noticed, was only able to turn away
embarrassed when Alice, the last of Lilys friends, came down the stairs.
Alice, like Peter, was the shortest and shyest of her friends. She was also
a little less bright and not as good looking as her friends, also like Peter.
Getting a bit more confidence from watching Wormtail twiddle his
thumbs nervously, James thought he would talk to Lily.
Hey, Evans.
Yes Potter?
I bet youd like to meet me in Hogsmeade today.
Lily rolled her eyes. How many times do I have to tell you, Potter? No.
James immediately cursed himself. How could I be so stupid? Didnt I
just tell myself last night I would change? This is harder than I thought it
would be. I need help.
Oh, James said, a little depressed because of the coldness in her voice
when she said No, and because he realized he had messed up.
You know, Potter, maybe if you learned some manners you might stand a
chance, Lily said sounding like she was trying to stop herself from
yelling. Maybe, she said quickly and putting emphasis on the word, and
then she stormed off.
James couldnt stop admiring the way her hair whipped around as she
turned and how it neatly fell over her other shoulder, or how sweet her
hair smelled. From the corner of the common room he heard Sidney
giggle and turned to see Remus kissing her hand and then her cheek as
well as giving her a couple of compliments. James turned again to see

Sirius and Jadzia on the couch, locked in a tight embrace. Wormtail just
stood next to Alice letting out a nervous squeak every time he opened his
mouth.
Soon everyone except Jadzia and Sirius came to wait by the portrait hole,
Lily only going after both Sidney and Alice were there. After five minutes
of waiting Remus said, Padfoot I thought you said you were starving?
Sirius and Jadzia broke apart and then they all walked down to the Great
Hall for breakfast. Okay, James thought, this is my chance to show Lily
Im not a bullying toerag and I can be a gentleman.
When everyone sat down though James said, Evans how bout sitting
next to me? You know you want to.
Lily just scowled at him again. Lily went to sit in the seat between Alice
and Jadzia. Man, this changing thing really is easier said than done,
James thought as he began to eat his food sulking while Sirius stuffed his
face. Peter tried to mimic Sirius but failed miserably and ended up
dribbling food down his front, earning him sniggers from people as they
walked by.
Prongs, mate, you okay? James heard Remus ask.
Yeah Moony Im fine, replied James. Just not too hungry is all. In
truth James was starving but was too busy thinking of ways to prove
himself to Lily to care.
Sirius nearly choked WHAT? Prongs, the one who made it his sole
purpose to find the kitchens so he could get extra food in first year, isnt
hungry? You sure youre feeling okay mate?
Yeah, positive, said James. He must have sounded less convincing than
he hoped because Sirius gave him a look that said If you say so. Lets
go he said looking at everyone but Lily, todays the last Hogsmeade
trip, we should get there early.

*Lilys POV*
Hey, Evans.
Lily turned around and saw James Potter standing right behind her. Yes
Potter?
I bet youd like to meet me in Hogsmeade today.
Same old arrogant Potter thought Lily. Rolling her eyes she replied How
many times do I have to tell you, Potter? No. Will he ever get it through
his head? I dont like him.
Oh, James said. He sounded a little depressed. Oh well, hell get over it
she thought.

he might have a chance with me? Maybe, she added quickly, putting
emphasis on the word, and then took off, making sure to whip him with
her hair.
They all waited by the portrait hole for Jadzia and Sirius. Lily only went
over when
Sidney and Alice were there so she didnt have to be alone with Potter.
Talking to Sidney,
she said You look happy.
Well, Sidney replied, Remus just makes me so happy, he is such a
gentleman and he's
so sweet.
Im glad youre happy, said Lily. At least we know one of the
Marauders have some
manners.
Oh come on Lily, James isnt that bad. You should give him a chance,
stated Sidney. I
think he deserves it after five, almost six, years of chasing you.
He is that bad, hes so so conceited. He just cant get it through his
over-inflated head
that one girl at Hogwarts doesnt find him attractive.
Whatever you say Lily.
In the Great Hall James approached Lily again
Evans how bout sitting next to me? You know you want to.
Merlin, will he ever quit? Lily thought to herself. She just sent a scowl in
Jamess direction. Instead she went to sit in the seat next to Jadzia and
Alice. As Sirius stuffed his face and Peter tried to, the girls put their heads
together.
You know Lily, Sidney was just telling me what you guys were talking
about and I-, Jadzia started but was cut off by Lily.
Then you know Im not going to give Potter a chance.
Jadzia started again, And I happen to agree with her. I mean dont you
think he must like you if hes been chasing you for five years?
My point exactly, said Sidney
Potter is only in to me because of the chase. If I were to give in he would
get bored with me and throw me away in about a week, Lily said.
You know Lily for someone so bright you are so dumb, said Jadzia.
I am not dumb. I get practically Outstanding on every test.
Yeah youre school smart, but you obviously dont get when a guy is
chasing you for a period of five years, even though he gets repeatedly
rejected, he must fancy you at least a little.
Whatever guys, said Lily sounding annoyed.
Suddenly Alice said shyly, Lily I think Sidney and Jadzia are right.
Then they heard James say they should all get going if they wanted to
really enjoy their last day in Hogsmeade this year.

A/N: i know this was short. at least it was longer than the first chapter
though. i wanted to end it here beause it sort of sets the scene for the next
chapter. chapter 3 will be longer than this chapter by the way

here is chapter 3. i hope you guys like it. i showed both of lily and james
thoughts at the samee time in some parts because it would have been
boring to keep rereading the same part twice, just with different thoughts.

Chapter 3: Remus and Sidney's Advice
The Marauders and the girls decided to split up and meet at the Three
Broomsticks at twelve-thirty for lunch. The Marauders, of course went to
Zonkos Joke Shop first, then Honeydukes. In Zonkos, James was
pretending to look at fake wands that turned your hair purple when you
used them, but he was really preoccupied with thoughts of Lily. He was
thinking over what had happened so far that day he had an answer.
Moony! he thought.
How come I didnt think of asking him before? James said under his
breath. He knew the answer though. He had been too busy thinking of
ways to prove himself to Lily that he hadnt even considered Remus. He
knew he needed help but he didnt know who he would ask,
What was that, Prongs?
James turned around and saw just the person he wanted to talk to.
Moony, can I ask you a favor?
Yeah sure, mate.
Well, James began, you see last night I had this dream- well, I guess it
was a memory- but anyway, I had this dream about when we were in fifth
year, right after we took our O.W.L.s. You were reading, and Padfoot and
I were hexing Snivellus-.
Oh, I remember, Lily came over and screamed at you, Remus cut in.
Well, when doesnt she? James started again. But, yeah thats the time
I was talking about. So I woke up and realized that if I dont change Ill
never have a chance with Lily.
Well whats the favor you needed from me? asked Remus but James
had a feeling he already knew.
I want you to give me gentleman lessons, James replied. Over the
summer for that month you stay at my house.
Okay, if youre sure, said Remus. I mean you are positive you want
Lily enough to change for her, right?

Yeah, Moony, Ill do anything. I- I love her, James last words
faltered. That was the first time he told one of his friends his true feelings
for Lily, he hadnt even told Sirius yet.
Okay then, well start the day after term ends, Remus told James.
Actually, Moony, I was wondering if you could start now. I sort of
messed up earlier, I was trying to be nice but it didnt work and she got
mad at me.
James began to tell Remus what he had said earlier.

When the guys went to Zonkos that morning the girls had gone around to
different little shops. Jadzia and Sidney still hadnt given up the topic of
James but Alice, being shy, said her bit and let it go.
I still dont see why you wont just give him a chance, Jadzia began.
Yeah, how bad could it be? put in Sidney.
Besides, Lily, if it does turn out bad then you just have another reason to
hate him, Jadzia added.
Lily was thinking over what her friends were saying. They sort of had a
point, Well maybe Did I just consider giving James Potter a chance?
All the girls gasped. Lily added Maybe if he was less conceited I would
give him a chance. Lily thought this was safe to say because she told her
friends often that she only liked guys who were modest and didnt think
they were irresistible.
Sidney, Jadzia, and Alice were shocked that Lily even thought about
giving James Potter a chance. Alice recovered first and said Umm its
twelve-fifteen. Should we go to the Three Broomsticks?
Lily knew Alice didnt like making decisions that involved the whole
group so she answered, Sure, lets go.
****
While the Marauders waited for the girls in the Three Broomsticks,
Remus and James went over what they discussed in Zonkos and
Honeydukes. Sirius and Peter were playing a game of wizard chess.
So, Prongs, you remember what I told you?

Yeah, I got it, said James. I just hope itll be easier than last time I
tried.
Just one more suggestion, mate, Remus said to James.
Yeah, what was it? James asked eagerly. He wanted to know anything
that might help him win Lilys heart.
Try calling her Lily, not Evans.
Just then the girls came through the door. Sidney went to sit next to
Remus, while Jadzia, James noticed, forgot the space next to Sirius and
proceded directly to Sirius lap. Okay I can do this, James thought.
Hey Evans, James said pleasantly. Shoot I knew I would mess up.
Remember Lily not Evans.
Hi Potter, said Lily a little less pleasantly.
Would you like to sit next to me?
Oh- er- sure
James was happy but still got a little upset because he saw her look for
another seat, Alice had taken the one between Sirius and Peter and the
only other two seats left were both next to James. He hid his grin as he
pulled out a chair for Lily to sit down in. They both sat there in awkward
silence. James was thinking of what to say and Lily was surprised he
wasnt being rude. Looking over at his friends, James saw that Sirius was
snogging Jadzia again and Peter was playing chess with Alice. James
could tell that they were both nervous. Remus was looking at James
expectantly.
When James still hadnt said anything Remus asked Sidney and Lily what
they went to buy. James supposed he was trying to get a topic started.
Youll see at the end of the year feast, Sidney replied teasing him.
Getting all dressed up to impress us, huh? James said but immediately
regretted it because Lily rolled her eyes at him.
I knew this polite thing was just an act. Hes just as big-headed as before,
thought Lily.
No, I was just James tried telling her but trailed off as she got up and
motioned for Sidney to follow her. Stupid, stupid, stupid was the only
thing going through James head.
Prongs mate, what happened? You werent doing half bad, Remus said
to James, a little upset that James wasnt able to keep that remark to
himself.
I know, I know, I just cant help it. I get all nervous around her and it just
slips, James answered, talking to the floor.
Alright, we need to work on that.
Work on what? asked Sirius completely oblivious to what had
happened.
Ill tell you later, James replied.
Okay, well were going to go outside and walk around, Sirius informed
them, pointing to Jadzia. James saw the mischievous glint in his grey
eyes.
Peter, in his desire to be like Sirius, asked Alice if she wanted to take a
walk, although he spoke in a shakier, squeaky voice. Remus and James
were left sitting at the table waiting for Sidney and Lily to return.

Whats wrong Lily? asked Sidney.
Potter, Lily replied simply yet angrily. He thinks everyone wants him.
He needs to get it in his head that not everyone in the world wants to
impress him, thought Lily
Oh, come on Lily, couldnt you tell he was trying?
He only wanted me to think he was trying.
You know, Lily, you should really give him a chance. It couldnt hurt.
You never know, you might realize you like him.
I do not like James Potter, said Lily with a look of disgust on her face.
Look how he treats every girl he goes out with. How can you tell me to
give him a chance? Hell get bored with me in a week and then toss me
aside like old trash.
Maybe he hasnt kept a girlfriend because he wants you and he cant get
over you.
Yeah, okay, said Lily sarcastically. The day James Potter cant get over
a girl is the day I start to like him. Thankfully thatll never happen.
Merlin, Jadzia was right; you are the dumbest smart-girl I have ever met.
Cant you tell that he fancies you?
"If he really fancied me he wouldn't be so rude to me."
"Lily, he's nervous. He likes you."
I told you hes only into me because of the chase.
Whatever Lily, this time it was Sidneys turn to sound annoyed and
with that Sidney turned on the spot and headed straight back for the table
where Remus and James sat.

James and Remus had finished their butterbeers and were ordering more
when the girls came back. At least shes still sitting next to me, thought
James which cheered him up a bit. After ten minutes of talking, in which
Lily had not said a word to James, Remus and Sidney left. Lily and James
were the only ones left at the table.
Lily?
Yeah? Lily said sounding shocked. Did he just call me Lily? she
thought.
Do you want to walk around Hogsmeade with me? James asked
hopefully. Oh no, he thought as Lily rolled her eyes a second time at him,
I messed up again.
At least let me walk you up to the school, James almost begged.
Alright, Lily said defeated. She thought he would just give up when she
said no to walking around Hogsmeade. Maybe Sidney is right, Ill give
him a chance to be polite.
YES, thought James forgetting to hide his grin this time.
Aww, thats cute, thought Lily as she saw a wide grin spread across his
face. Whoa Lily, stop that!
The walk back up to the castle was fine. James was being very polite.
This is good, James thought, we arent fighting or anything. He didnt
know it but similar thoughts were going through Lilys head. Well he can
be very charming when he wants to be, thought Lily. Oh no, am I falling
for him?
Its so hot, Lily complained.
Ill take your over shirt for you, James offered. Handing him the over
shirt she said thanks. No problem, he said while conjuring her up a
glass of ice water.
I could get used to this James Potter, she thought. Lily you've got to stop
that!
As she drank the water James stared at her and started blushing. Shes so
beautiful, he thought to himself. She really was beautiful. Her tank top
and jeans seemed to enhance every womanly curve she had and her hair
danced in the air as a gentle breeze came their way. James was so busy
taking in Lilys beauty that he didnt notice her glance at him and then
turn away quickly.
I might as well let him look. Hes not that bad himself. Lily stop you dont
like him! Do I? she thought to herself, she was a little confused at the
thoughts that had been running through her head.
The two of them kept walking making small talk, James was thinking of
Lily and Lily was trying to sort out her thoughts when, to James'
displeasure, Snape appeared.
Looky here, Snape sneered. Its the mudblood an-, he was cut off as
James suspended him in mid air by his ankle with a nonverbal spell.
Apologize, Snivellus, James said. There was so much anger and hate in
him that he was shaking. Now, he added while waving his wand
threateningly.
And what happens if I dont? said Snape with as much hate in his voice
as James had.
This. With that James transfigured Snape into a frog paralyzed him and
sent him shooting up through the air, then back down.
Stop! Lily cried.
But, Lily, he called-, James started.
I know what he called me, just stop, he isnt worth it, Lily cut him off.
Before James could stop himself and to his utter horror he said I will if
you go out with me.
NO POTTER! Lily exploded. She turned and walked straight towards
the castle. She only turned around to bellow Accio shirt, and then took
off again before her over shirt could catch up to her. I knew it, Potter
hasnt changed one bit, she thought. But why did she feel happy that he
stood up for her, even now that she was so angry?

Stupid, idiotic git, thought James. He wasnt talking about Snape, but
himself. Everything was going so well. Why do I always mess up in front
of her? Why? he shouted at the sky.
****
The final week James was deeply depressed. He was only seen outside of
his dormitory for classes and meals. He barely ate at the meals so he
wasnt there for long. His friends tried talking to him and cheering him
up, but it seemed nothing would work.
James lay down in his bed. He had just finished packing and was ready to
go to sleep. He skipped the feast not wanting to see what clothes the girls
had bought in Hogsmeade, especially Lily. Every time he thought of her
tears would fill his eyes. Now it was too much. He had the opportunity to
show her he could be polite and what had he done? He messed up. He let
his tears flow freely from his face before going into an uneasy sleep.
The train ride home was very similar to the final week at Hogwarts.
James wouldnt talk to anyone. Sirius, being his best friend, told Jadzia he
needed to get James to cheer up.
Hey, mate feeling ok? Sirius asked James. James could tell he was
concerned.
Yeah, fine, James replied sitting up a little bit.
Listen Prongs, Moony told me what happened with Lily.
Oh.
Yeah, Im gonna help out too. Wormtail said he would if he was
spending time at your house.
Thanks.
Do you really love her James?

James realized his friend was being serious when he used James real
name and not his nickname. Yeah Sirius, I do.
Well then, Ill help out however I can.
James grinned. He knew Sirius would help, thats just what best friends
did for each other, but James couldnt help but feel grateful. Maybe this
wont be so hard, if only Lily would give me another chance, James
thought. He was a little more hopeful now.

On the Hogwarts Express the girls sat in their compartment talking. Lily,
though, kept to herself. She was thinking about what happened with
James last week. I can't like him. Yes you can he is really sweet, he
probably gets nervous around you like Sidney said. Lily was really
confused. All she knew was that when James hadn't shown his face for the
rest of the final week she was happy he wasn't bothering her and at the
same time, for some reason, a little upset that she hadn't seen him.
"Lily what's going on?" Jadzia asked.
"Nothing," Lily replied.
"There is something wrong," said Sidney. "Ever since that weekend in
Hogsmeade you've been upset."
"Yeah and James hasn't come out of his dorm," said Alice.
Then a look of dawning comprehension hit Jadzia and Sidney's faces.
"What happened between you and James?" they asked together.
"Nothing happened," said Lily trying not to blush at the thought of that
day and how sweet James had been.
"Oh my god," Jadzia nearly screamed. "You gave James a chance."
"Okay, okay. I did."
"How did it go?"
"It went fine until he hexed Snape and asked me out again."
"Don't tell me you yelled at him, Lily." said Sidney. Lily just nodded. "I
thought you said he was being polite."
"He was, and it wasn't that bad. Then he decided to hex Snape and
become an arrogant git again."
"You know what I think?" asked Jadzia. "I think Lily has got a thing for
James Potter."
"I don't like him," Lily said. She knew that it wasn't completely true. If he
ever acted as polite as he had a week ago Lily knew she would fall for
him completely.
****
When they got off the train, James, Sirius, and Remus stood by where the
luggage was released, talking about their plans for the summer.
Im going to take my bike over to your house tomorrow with Moony,
Sirius informed James. James knew Sirius had a motorcycle and now that
he was of age he planned on putting a flying charm on it. That reminds
me, be ready by noon Moony.
Okay, no problem.
Okay, my parents will be happy to hear that. They told me they enjoyed
having you stay over last summer, said James.
Glad to hear it. Im only staying for a month, though.
Are you sure? Where are you going to stay? James asked. He
remembered the day last summer when Sirius had come to his house
asking to live with him because he had run away from home. Honestly, he
was concerned for his friend.
My Uncle Alphard left me some money for my own place. Youre going
home after full moon, right Moony? asked Sirius.
Yeah you know how my parents get, replied Remus. In fact if Prongs
parents didnt put that charm around the house and property when I go
there they wouldnt let me go at all, even when it wasnt full moon.
Alright, so Ill give you a ride back, said Sirius. James could tell that he
was excited about using the bike. You know, now that Im of age I think
Ill help your parents out when youre with them, they deserve a break.
Then Ill head to my apartment, he told Remus.
Id go too, but Im not sure my parents would be pleased if I asked if I
could help out with-, James stopped. He noticed Jadzia, Sidney, and Lily
had just arrived. Each one had the look of someone trying to comprehend
something a troll tried telling them. He pointed them out to Remus and
Sirius and they stopped talking immediately.
What were you talking about, sweetie? Sidney asked Remus.
Yeah and what do you mean your apartment, baby? Jadzia questioned
Sirius.
Noth-, James heard Remus start to say but thought he must have
noticed the look in Sidneys eyes because he stopped and told her he
would tell her but she might not like it. He gave Sirius and James a look
that clearly said, I only want her to know.
Let me get your trunks for you, babe, Sirius offered Jadzia so Remus
could get some privacy. Ill tell you what I meant on the way to your
car.
Taking Sirius lead James offered to help Lily with her trunks.
You can take that one, said Lily pointing to the biggest one. Inside her
head two voices were battling. Hes so sweet, even after I yelled at him,
one voice said. Hes still an obnoxious git, said the other one. She could
tell that second voice was starting to give in to the first one.
Okay. Where is your car?
Over there, said Lily. She was now pointing to where a woman with
emerald green eyes was talking to a woman with hazel eyes, and a man
with deep red hair was talking to a man with jet-black hair.
Hey mum, hey dad, James called. Lily thought that he was being rude
calling her mom Mum and her dad Dad. See, said the second voice
triumphantly. That voice became quiet at once when the man and the
woman who had been talking to Lilys parents turned at the sound of
James voice.
Hi James, a deep voice spoke out, his fathers.
Hi dear, James mother called to him.
Mum, Dad, this is Lily Evans. Lily these are my parents.
Hello, said Lily. Looking more closely now Lily saw that James and his
father looked almost exactly alike, their hair even stood up in the exact
same places. The only differences were that James fathers hair had little
grey streaks in them and that James had his mothers hazel eyes. And what
beautiful eyes they are, Lily found herself thinking.

Hello Lily, weve heard a lot about you, James mother told her. James
blushed and to his surprise, so did Lily.
I just have to help Lily load her trunk into the car, James informed his
parents.
You dont have to, Lily told him.
Oh, yes he does, said James mother. Be a gentleman, James, and get
all Lilys stuff for her, she told James while giving Lily a knowing look
and then a wink.
Okay, Mum. James grabbed Lilys stuff, then turned and greeted Lilys
parents. Hello, Im James Potter. Its nice to meet you.
Its nice to meet you too, James, replied Lilys mother. Im Susan and
this is my husband Richard.
Nice to meet you, Mr. Evans, James said extending a hand. He knew
there wasnt a reason to be, but he felt intimidated by Lilys father. After
all he was in love with his daughter, even if she didnt love him back.
Lilys father just smiled and said, No need to call me Mr. Evans. Please
call me Richie.
Okay, Mr. Ev- umm, Richie, James replied awkwardly. Where would
you like Lilys things, Mrs. Evans?
In the trunk, thank you, she said, and you can call me Susan.
Alright, said James putting Lilys stuff in the trunk.
Thanks, James, said Lily.
No problem, said James. He turned and bid Lilys parents farewell, and
made his way to his own parents.
Shes very nice, son, said James father when James got there. I see
why you like her.
I guess all the Potter men have a thing for redheads, observed James
mom, who had red hair herself. She reminds me of myself when I was
her age.
James just smiled. He hoped his parents would like Lily. They got into the
car, but not before James heard a someone shout hysterically.

WHAT?!
It was Lily.

hey guys. sorry it took so long to post. i kept getting myself stuck and had
to go back and change it a lot. well i finally finished it. i hope you like it.
there is a cliffy at the end but don't be too mad at me.

Chapter 4: Beginning the Summer
You heard me, Lilys mom replied. Your father and I are going away
and the Potters have offered to let you stay over for the summer.
The thought terrified Lily. It wasnt being with James that worried her. It
was that she was afraid of what would happen if James was polite and
charming again. When they had walked back to Hogwarts together, Lily
was starting to warm up to James. Why does he have to make me nuts
even when he doesnt ask me out? Lily asked herself.
Dont worry you are only going to be there for a month, said Lilys dad.
Your mother and I arent going away until next month.
Good, thought Lily, maybe Ill be able to organize my thoughts by then.
Where is Petunia staying? she asked a little calmer as she got into the
car.
At Vernons, her mother replied.
Lily remembered her sisters boyfriend, Vernon Dursley. They had been
going out since the beginning of last year and Lily had met him last
summer.
Oh, said Lily. This summer is going to be interesting.

I wonder why she screamed like that, James thought aloud in the car.
She probably found out where she was going to stay this summer,
James mother answered James question.
Huh? Did you say something Mum? James hadnt been paying
attention to his mom.
I said she probably found out where she was staying this summer,
James mom repeated.
How do you know? asked James.
Because next month she is coming to stay with us, replied James dad
grinning.
James was having trouble containing himself. Really? he asked trying
to sound calm but failing.
Yes, James mom said smiling. She obviously enjoyed seeing her son so
happy. Her parents are going away and shes going to come here.
Ill have another chance to show Lily I can be polite and with Moony and
Padfoot helping me for a month I wont mess up. With this thought James
smiled widely.
The next day James woke up to someone shaking him. It was Sirius.
Prongs, your mum told me to come wake you up, Sirius told him.
Hey, mate. Is Moony here? James asked reaching for his glasses.
Yeah, hes downstairs eating.
Cool. I didnt think you guys would be here until the afternoon.
Uh, mate, have you looked at the clock? asked Sirius laughing.
James turned on his side and checked the clock. It was almost one! Im
gonna take a shower. Tell Moony to come up here when hes finished.
With that James got up and left the room.
Fifteen minutes later James was out of the shower and in his room
changing. Sirius and Remus told James to get them when he was done.
James rushed to get dressed. He wanted to start his gentleman lessons
with Remus as soon as he could. Lily was going to be there in a month.
Now that he was fully dressed James ran down the stairs screaming.
Moony, Padfoot come on upstairs! Lets get started.
Ouch! Prongs, watch where youre going!
Sorry Moony didnt see you there. James had almost knocked Remus
down the stairs. How did it go when you told Sidney? he asked helping
Remus stand up.
Surprisingly, she took it well. She didnt want to break up with me, she
just listened and when I finished telling her how I got bitten she started
kissing me as if her life depended on it. Remus started grinning
sheepishly.
Im guessing you didnt try to stop her, James replied laughing slightly.
No, I didnt feel the need to make her stop. We kept at it until her um,
until her parents came over to us, Remus said looking embarrassed.
James couldnt help it. He just started laughing until he couldnt anymore.
He developed a stitch in his side and had to sit down for a bit until it went
away so he could move without it hurting.
Well, come on lets go up to your room and get going, Remus said still
looking embarrassed. Padfoot come on were starting, he called down
the stairs.
Once they were all in James room Remus pulled out his wand. Okay
Prongs, ready?
James was confused and a little worried. Moony, he asked, why do
you need a wand? You arent going to like wipe my mind or anything
right?
Oh, right hold on. Remus performed a complicated looking wrist

movement and the slim figure of Lily Evans appeared out of thin air.
Alright Prongs, this is a replica of Lily and youll practice controlling
your behavior while talking to her, Remus explained.
Okay, said James eager to start.
The first thing we need to work on is holding your tongue when youre
around Lily. You should be able to control hexing people.
Wait so that means he cant hex Snivellus anymore? asked Sirius
clearly disappointed. You cant take all the fun out of him!"
Well I guess if he provokes you, Remus said to James. Just dont let
Lily see you."
Right, dont let her see got it. This is going to take a lot of hard work,
James thought to himself. Can we start?
Once I put the charm on the replica itll start acting exactly like Lily.
You might forget it isnt really Lily after a while.
Im ready, said James. Put the charm on it Moony.

Lily woke up that day think about what would happen over the summer.
This is nuts, I cant like him. I only thought I did because he was being so
nice. He even proved he was pretending when Snape showed up.
He was only standing up for you, said a voice in her head, it sounded a lot
like Sidney.
He still ended up being a jerk though, a second voice argued back.
Stop, STOP, STOP! I dont like him. Deep down Lily knew she was lying
and if James was sweet and charming she wouldnt have a choice. She
chose to ignore that part of her, at least for now.
Hey Lily, came a voice from the doorway.
Lily looked up and saw her bony and horse-faced sister, Petunia, standing
there. Hi Petunia. Lily hadnt seen her sister when she got home. Her
mother told her that she was with Vernon when they arrived home from
Kings Cross. Lily and her sister werent friends exactly but she was a
little upset that her sister wasnt there to greet her. Lily supposed she
knew why Petunia wasnt fond of her. Lily was always better at school
and the boys seemed to like her more, and then Lily found out she was a
witch. The fact that Petunia came to say good morning made it a little
better though. How was school?
Good, Petunia replied. Where is your owl? she asked pointing to the
empty cage on Lilys night table.
Merlin is out hunting. Lily had a beautiful Great Gray Owl. It was very
smart and Lily thought that such a magnificent and intelligent bird
deserved to be called Merlin.
Oh, well when he comes back could you try to keep him quiet? Vernon is
coming over later and he would find it strange if he knew you had a pet
owl.
So he still doesnt know Im a witch then? Lily asked a little annoyed.
Know he isnt going to know ever! Petunia nearly screamed.
Yes, yes I know you dont want him to know Im a how do you so
elegantly put it again? Oh yeah a freak, Lilys voice dripped with
sarcasm.
Good, and with that Petunia turned and walked downstairs.
Lily thought about how hers and Petunias conversations had been the
same since Lily was eleven. They would be nice to each other and then
Petunia would say something about Lily being a witch and a freak and
then she would storm off. It happened so often it didnt even affect Lily.
She had no problem walking downstairs with a smile on her face.
Well someone looks a little more cheerful, Lilys mother observed.
I just decided I would enjoy the month I have without James Potter
driving me nuts, Lily told her mom.
I dont see why you dont like him. Even your father liked him.
I know. I heard him telling James to call him Richie. Lily chuckled a
little at that. Her father didnt even let Vernon call him Richard, let alone
Richie.
Lily, tell me why you dont like him. I bet its nothing.
Lily obediently told her mom what James had done to her for the past six
years at Hogwarts. and he always asks me out, Lily concluded.
I think you should talk to him, said Lilys mom. Give him a chance.
You might end up having feelings for him.
Yeah, thats what Im afraid of, Lily thought.
What was that?
Realizing she must have thought aloud Lily told her mom what happened
in Hogsmeade. Lily knew there was no way to trick her mom. Her mother
knew something was up.
It sounds like someone has a crush on James Potter, Lilys mom teased
when Lily finished telling her what happened.
I do not Mum, Lily argued. She knew she didnt sound the least bit
convincing.
Yes you do otherwise you wouldnt be so confused. You are only trying
to convince yourself you dont like him.
Lily knew her mom was right but wasnt ready to admit that yet.

James, Remus, and Sirius were in the kitchen eating lunch after the long
work they did trying to control James behavior around Lily. James had
improved but his cheek was still red from where the replica Lily slapped
him a couple of times.
Moony, I dont think the real Lily would slap me, said James. She
usually just yells at me when I say something she thinks is rude.
Yeah, well I thought it would help motivate you if the reaction from the
replica was worse than it really would be, Remus told James.
Oh.
Cheer up Prongs, with a little more practice you wont even notice the
stinging feeling of being slapped. Sirius let out his bark-like laugh after
he said this.
James felt discouraged and depressed. He realized his face must have
shown it because Sirius quickly changed his attitude.
Prongs, mate, I was only joking. Youll get this gentleman thing down
dont worry, Sirius said comfortingly to James.
Yeah, you are improving you only need to practice some more, Remus
put in.
Thanks guys. I just hope I dont mess up when Lily comes over next
month. It could be my last chance to show her I have changed.
Yea- wait what? asked Sirius with a confused expression on his face.
Remus was wearing a similar expression.
Oh, I didnt tell you guys yet but Lily is coming over next month. Her
parents are going away and my mum told her mum that she could stay
here, James explained.
Well if Lily is coming here, well practice as much as we can, Sirius
told James. James was grateful that his best friend wanted to help him
out, and didnt try and talk him out of it. Even though James knew he
wasnt really fond of the idea of having to change for a girl.
After lunch the three made their way upstairs again. When Remus put the
charm back on the replica it immediately opened its eyes and greeted
Remus. Turning to James though the replica scowled. Hello Potter, it
said still scowling.
Hey Lily, James said remembering to use Lilys first name. How is
your summer going?
Fine, why does it matter to you? it said rudely.
Im only trying to be nice, James said defending himself. This is so
weird, it acts exactly like Lily. He kept at it though. If Remus said he
thought it would help then James trusted his friend. So it was good?
Thats nice.
I guess. I havent really done anything so far.
Oh, ok. Would you like to take a walk? James asked very politely.
Sure, but dont try anything Potter. Ill just go get changed.
Ill help you, James joked. He realized what he said was bad as soon as
the replicas hand connected with James cheek. The result was a loud
SMACK! Moony take the charm off. Ive had enough practice for
today.
Prongs, youre doing fine, Remus told his friend reassuringly. Just a
bit more practice and I doubt well need the whole month.
Yeah, well Ive still had enough for today, James was getting depressed
again. Ill never get the hang of this. Lily wont ever like me.

The only thing that resulted from Lilys conversation with her mom was
that was once again confused. This is ridiculous, she thought. When I go
to his house Ill see what he acts like. If hes the same then Ill forget him,
if he really has changed well well see what happens. This thought
seemed to calm her down more than anything else had that day. Just as
she was about to lie down on the couch the doorbell rang.
Lily, can you get that dear her mom called from the kitchen.
Sure Mum. Lily got up to go answer the door but before she reached
the hallway Petunia came running down the stairs shrieking.
No, Ill get. Its Vernon, Petunia shouted at Lily.
Sure enough when Petunia opened the door Lily saw the large form of her
sisters boyfriend, Vernon Dursley. His blue shirt and blue pants gave him
the appearance of a small blue whale.
Hey Honey, Vernon said to Petunia.
Hi Dear, Petunia replied.
Lily accidentally let out a laugh. She thought they sounded as if they were
married, not like her friends who called their boyfriends Baby and
Sweetie. Petunia just glared at her.
Oh, hi Lily, Vernon said to Lily. He had clearly just noticed her
standing right behind Petunia.
How are you Vernon? Lily asked.
Good. How was school this year?
It wasnt too bad, thank you.
Where is it you go again?
Lily hesitated for the slightest bit. This boarding school out in the
country, she said looking at her sister for approval. Petunia gave Lily the
tiniest of nods.
Hello Vernon, Lilys mom said coming out of the kitchen. How are
you doing today?

Im doing very well, thank you. And how are you?
Lily didnt hear how her mother was doing because she went upstairs. She
felt like she needed a nap. Just as she was about to lie down, she was
interrupted again. This time she was interrupted by a tapping noise
coming from the window. Merlin had come back from hunting. Lily
opened the window for him and noticed he was clutching three letters.
One was from Jadzia, the other from Sidney, and the last from Alice.
Lily read the letters over. Each one was the same. They all asked how her
summer was going and what her plans were. Lily wrote them each a reply
telling them where she was going to be staying next month. She only told
Sidney about how confused she was. Sidney was good with things like
that. Jadzia was too but she would probably rub it in her face saying that
she was right and Lily had a thing for James. Alice just wasnt very good
with giving out advice.
When she sent the letters off with Merlin again Lily glanced at her clock.
Oh no, I have to get ready for dinner! Petunia will probably shoot me if
Im not ready to go soon. The whole family was going out to dinner with
Vernon and his family.

The month went on the same for Lily and James. Lily would spend most
of her time in her room because Vernon came over in the afternoons
almost every day. She wasnt very fond of Vernon. When they had gone
out to dinner she concluded that even James could be less big-headed. A
couple of days after Lily sent the letters to her friends Merlin had come
back. Jadzia and Alice had told Lily not to worry; it was only for a month.
Sidney, though, had written two sentences: Give him a chance. You like
him.
James kept practicing his manners with the replica. He was now confident
that he could have a normal conversation with Lily and be polite. He
literally worked on his manners all day, only stopping for sleeping, eating,
and going to the bathroom.
Before they knew it, the end of the month approached. Lily had never felt
such a spectrum of emotions. She was excited, nervous, scared, and
happy all at the same time. The only thought that had gone through her
head the past two days was, Im going to James house soon. Each time
she thought its tone would be different. Sometimes excited, sometimes
scared. She tried going to sleep, which she did, but only when James face
popped into her head did she calm down.
James was also excited about seeing Lily but forced it out of his mind. He
had more important things to worry about and needed to remain
extremely focused. It was full moon and Remus was nastier than ever and
at least ten times as hard to control. This was mostly due to the fact that
he kept hitting the invisible barriers set around the house.
The cut on James side had opened up again and Sirius was bleeding from
the mouth. They had gone inside to heal themselves once, James knew
that as long as one adult wizard was in the house he could transform and
heal himself, and couldnt risk it again. They managed to force Remus
onto the Quidditch pitch in the backyard. James and Sirius stayed there all
night, standing guard in turns, until the moon disappeared and Remus
transformed back into human form and they eventually fell asleep.
James woke up and saw that the moon had set and the sun was rising. It
must be early, he thought. He got up and made his way to the house,
ignoring the bleeding in his side thinking he would heal it when he got
into the house. After taking a few steps inside, though, James collapsed.

hey guys. i worked really hard on this chapter. i hope you all like it. it was
originally going to cover a longer period of time but i like where i left it.

oh and i wanted to tell you all that i based James' mother on my mom (the
Merpeople
name is the same too, except for the Potter part) who passed away about
three years ago.

Lily woke up very early in the morning. Glancing at the clock she saw it
Joined: 17was four in the morning. Feeling very anxious, Lily got out of bed. She

couldnt remember why she was so anxious. She was thinking about it

when she remembered. Today she was going to James house. How could
I forget? Ive been going nuts thinking about it all month!
To kill time she decided to write letters to each of her friends telling her
she was leaving for James that day. First she wrote to Jadzia:
Hey Jadzia,
Today Im going to Potters house. Im going to try out what you said.
Please write back. Send your letters there because thats where I will be
when you get this.
xo,
Lily
She wrote similar ones to Sidney and Alice, telling them where to send
their letters. Lilys clock said it was four fifteen. She was going to James
house in about three hours. Her parents wanted to leave at seven so
James mother was picking Lily up to save Lilys mother and father the
trouble. Lily lay down in her bed for lack of nothing better to do and
thought about nothing for a while.
Eventually James face popped into her head again and to her surprise she
didnt care. She let her mind take her on the back of his broomstick with
her arms wrapped around his waist, flying in the moonlight. Lily smiled
and disregarded the voice in her head telling her to stop daydreaming
about Potter. Only when the grandfather clock in the hall struck five did
she come out of her reverie.
Lily went over to her closet to pick out clothes. She had sent letters to
both Jadzia and Alice asking for their advice as well as Sidney. Alice
wasnt much help and Sidney sent her the same letter again: Give him a
chance. You like him. Jadzia, though, had suggested testing James to see
if he changed by watching how he acted when Lily did things like dress
attractively and flirt a little. Lily usually didnt tease boys but she thought
her friend had an idea, and she also thought it would be too fun not to
tease James.
Looking through her closet Lily found what she was looking for, a black
mini skirt and a white spaghetti-strap tank top. Its simple, she thought,
but if James hasnt changed hell be all over me. She laid out her clothes
on the bed and made her way to the bathroom to take a shower.
Now out of the shower, completely dressed, and her hair dry and flowing
down her back and over her shoulders Lily only had a half hour to pack.
She quickly packed all her summer clothes in a bag and took out her trunk
she kept all her stuff in for Hogwarts. She ran to the bathroom to grab her
stuff and then threw them unceremoniously into her bag.
She wasnt completely packed but thought that when Karen arrived she
could help. Lily went downstairs and found her parents talking to James
mother. They were laughing merrily which suggested that one of them
had just told a joke.
Hello, Mrs. Potter, Lily greeted James mom.
Hello dear, said Mrs. Potter smiling. I told you at Kings Cross, please,
call me Karen. My husband wont have you calling him Mr. Potter
either.
Right, sorry, Lily began. Lily liked Karen, she seemed like a fun person
to have around.
Its not a problem dear, Karen smiled again.
They sat there talking for a little. Lily considered Karen to be like an
instant best friend and quickly realized that fun was an understatement.
At least I know Ill have someone to talk to, she thought. Then a silver owl
came into the kitchen and whispered in Karens ear. Her expression
quickly became fearful.
Lily, go and get your trunks we have to go, said Karen, she was calm
but the fear in her eyes was obvious.
Im not completely packed yet. My stuff is on my bed though, Lily told
her, a little at the look of fear in Karens eyes.
Ill go pack. You go by Floo and Ill Apparate back with your stuff. Just
say Potter Mansion, Karen said. She thrust a bag of Floo Powder into
Lilys hand. Where is your room?
My door is open youll see it.
Okay. Karen then hurried up the steps.
Lily turned to her parents. Goodbye Mum, goodbye Dad.
Goodbye Lily, said her dad.
Goodbye dear. Well see you over Christmas.
Okay, if you need to write just send Merlin, said Lily hugging her
parents. Then she through the powder into the fire and the flames
instantly shot up, turning the same emerald green color as her eyes. She
stepped in to the fire. Potter Mansion, she said loudly and clearly.
She was spinning very fast and there was a deafening roar in her ears. She
caught glimpses of other rooms and finally fell out of the fire place and
into a kitchen. There lying on the floor was James bleeding badly.
James! Mr. Potter what happened? she asked frantically. Only one thing
was going through her head, I hope hes ok, I hope hes okay, I hope hes
okay.
I dont know. After Karen went to pick you up I heard footsteps and I
came downstairs to see what happened and he was just lying here, Mr.
Potter said.
A loud CRACK announced Karens arrival. Harry, go get Sirius and ask
him what happened.
Right okay, he said running upstairs.
Turning to James, Karen tried to close his wound with a wave of her
wand but it wouldnt close completely and he was still bleeding. She
summoned a blood-replenishing potion and a plant with purple clusters at
the end Lily didnt recognize at first. Karen fed James the potion and then
put the plant, which Lily now realized was dittany, on the closed part of
James' wound and muttered the incantation. The scars faded a little. Then
she began examining his face, as if to check if it had changed at all.
Karen, said Harry running down the stairs. He isnt in his bed.
An even more worried look spread across Karens face. Go look
outside! she yelled half-hysterically. It made Lily uneasy just watching
Karens face go from happy to a worried look to a look of absolute fear in
a matter of five minutes.
Umm Karen?
Yes? said Karen as she finished examining James face.
Should we move him upstairs? Lily asked. A bed would be much more
comfortable.
Thats a fine idea, Lily, she said. With a swish and flick of her wand she
levitated James up the stairs.
Once James was in his bed Karen took his shirt off and conjured up some
bandages, charming them to wrap themselves around his waist because
his cut wouldnt completely close. Lily blushed when she saw the
muscles in his chest and stomach and looked away. Probably from
Quidditch, she thought.

Lily why dont you go unpack, offered Karen. You dont need to stay
here. Ill make you some breakfast.
No its ok, she said. She was much too worried about James to leave his
side. Maybe Sidney and Jadzia were right. Maybe I do like him, Lily
thought to herself even though she knew she didnt just maybe like him.
She still wanted to know if he had changed or not.
Okay well Ill bring you up some breakfast, Karen said smiling as
though she heard Lilys thoughts.
Lily was sitting in the chair in James room when James parents, Remus,
and Sirius came in the room.
Explain, she said to Sirius with a penetrating stare.
Well you know about Remus, Sirius began.
What about Remus? Lily asked cutting him off.
Sirius looked surprised; Lily guessed he hadnt known she was here. He
turned to Remus and Remus nodded. Ill tell her Padfoot, she wont tell
anyone. Then he turned to Lily. What he was talking about was Im a
werewolf.
Lily just stared in shock.
Okay, so now that everyone is caught up, Sirius started again, you
need to know why James wasnt affected by the cut. He took a deep
breath. James, Peter, and I are all animagi. James becomes a stag, I
become a dog, and Peter becomes a rat. It took us three years and in our
fifth year we were able to do it.
WHAT?! Karen screamed
Dont get mad. It helps to have them around. I have more self control
when they are with me. It is the best thing any friend could ever do for
me, Remus told James parents.
So youve been doing this for a while now? James father asked.
Yes, Im sorry Mr. and Mrs. P, Sirius said.
Well there isnt anything we can do about it now, is there? Just next time
try and be more careful, Karen said calming down.
Lily was still in a state of shock and looked on disbelievingly. She

couldnt believe it. Of course it would explain where they went every
month and why Remus was always so tired and why they always had
unexplained injuries, she thought. It also explains the nicknames.
We will Mrs. P, Sirius reassured her. Ive got to take Remus home
now.
Yeah, you know how my parents are, Remus said, especially the day
after I transform.
Okay boys. Youre always welcome over for Sunday tea. Would you like
some breakfast before you go? asked Karen.
That would be great Mrs. P, Sirius said.
Yeah, thanks Mrs. Potter, something we can take with us though. I dont
want my parents to worry, Remus added.
Not a problem and I dont know how many times Ive told you before,
call us Karen and Harry. Lily would you like something too?
Yes, thank you, Lily finally managed to say something.
Karen went down to the kitchen and Harry followed her, leaving Lily
alone with Remus and Sirius. They all sat in an awkward silence.
So are you guys really animagi? Lily asked.
Yeah, watch. Sirius stood up and the next moment there was a shaggy
black dog in his place. See? he asked after he transformed back into his
human form.
Yeah, so is this what you guys were talking about at the train station?
And what you told Sidney? she asked Remus.
Yeah it is.
How did she take it?
Good, were still together, he said with a look of happiness on his face.
I was scared she wasnt going to want to see me anymore.
Well Ill tell you something Remus. She likes you a lot. Whenever she
talks about you,
her eyes light up.
Remus smile broadened. Really? he asked still smiling.

Yeah, said Lily grinning at his reaction. Jadzia likes you a lot too,
Sirius. I just thought Id tell you because you two snog so much she
probably doesnt get the chance to tell you herself, she laughed. Am I
really getting along with the Marauders? she asked herself.
Sirius laughed. You know Evans, Prongs likes you a lot too. Youll see.
Lily was trying her hardest not to blush. What does he mean by that?
Maybe James has changed for me, she thought excitedly.
The rest of the day Lily spent in the chair in James room. Remus and
Sirius had left and Lily was now alone. She had eaten lunch in the room
and the plates were on the floor. Karen and Harry didnt mind that Lily
had chosen to spend the day with James. Now it was seven oclock
Lily would you like to come and have some dinner? Karen came in and
asked Lily in a comfortingly soft voice.
With a final look at James she got up. Hes so peaceful when hes asleep. I
just wish he would open his eyes so I can see them and no hes okay. Over
the day Lily accepted that she liked James, but that one voice in her head
said that she still needed to see if he had changed. She had a feeling he
had. Okay, Ill be right down.
Hell be fine. There isnt any need to worry, Karen said.

James opened his eyes. He felt very weak and light-headed. What
happened? The clock on his wall read seven twenty. His side hurt a lot
and James remembered the night before and how his cut had opened up
again. He just realized he had bandages wrapped around him. Oh no! Did
I faint? Who found me? I hope I didnt get Moony and Padfoot in trouble.
Looking around the room he saw a plate on the floor with food on it. I
wonder who stayed in here with me. He thought he heard voices coming
from downstairs. They must be eating dinner, he thought to himself. He
closed his eyes again and went back to sleep.

Finished with her dinner Lily went back upstairs to James room. His
parents had offered to make up a guest room but she refused. She settled
herself in her chair and continued the daydream she had that morning of
her and James. It seemed so long ago to Lily, even though it was just a
few hours, because she couldnt stop worrying about James. She finally
drifted off to sleep still dreaming of riding on the back of James
broomstick.

James woke up that morning when he got the greatest surprise of his life;
Lily Evans was asleep in chair in his room. He had completely forgotten
that she was supposed to be there yesterday but quickly remembered once
the shock of seeing her wore off. Sitting himself up carefully he grabbed
the book that was on his night stand and began to read.
About an hour later Lilys eyes slowly opened. She blinked trying to
adjust to the light. When her eyes opened again she noticed James sitting
up, reading.
James! Youre awake, she said as she flung her arms around him
Yes I am, he said in shock. Is Lily Evans hugging me?
Lily let go of him. Are you okay? she asked
Just a little sore but Im fine.
Good, in that case she hit his arm hard. Dont you ever scare me
like that again James Potter! I was worried sick! she yelled.
First she hugs me, and now she says she was worried about me. I really
hope Im not dreaming. James couldnt keep the smile off his face.
Were you really worried about me? he asked still smiling brightly.
Lily smiled back. Yes I was. Hes so adorable.
James smile only got bigger. Lily, did Moony and Padfoot leave yet?
Yeah they left yesterday. They told me and your parents about you being
animagi.
Oh, said James. Were my parents mad? Are you mad at me? he
asked. He really hoped she wasnt mad at him.
What? For helping your friend out when he needed it the most? Im not
mad. Your mom calmed down when Remus explained how much it helps.
I think she was more worried, she said. She smiled again, she couldnt
help it. James was okay!
James smiled again. I cant believe it. Lily Evans keeps smiling at me!
James just smiled even bigger.
Im going to go see if your parents are downstairs. Theyll be happy to
know you are awake, Lily said.
James watched her as she went down the stairs. He didnt look away until
she completely disappeared from his view. Shes beautiful even when
shes doing something as simple as walking. Shes perfect. Ive got to
prove I have changed. I love her.
Moments later James heard foot steps coming up the steps. Then he saw
his mother come into his room, followed by his father, followed by Lily.
Morning Mum, morning Dad, James said.
Good to see you awake, son, said his father.
James I can not believe you. An unregistered animagous? You could
have severely injured yourself learning how! James mother shouted.
I thought you said she wasnt mad, James said to Lily.
I said she calmed down a bit, Lily replied simply.
Mad? Of course Im mad. You willingly put yourself in danger just so
you could help a friend and Im proud you would do something like that
but of course Im mad.
Sorry Mum, James said.
No use crying over spilt potion, I guess, said his mother calming down
a bit. Would you two like some breakfast.
Yes please, they both said at the same time.
The two ate breakfast together in James room. James was being very
polite, like he had practiced, and Lily, although she didnt show it, was
very happy about this.
Its working; Im not messing up at all. I hope she notices, James thought.
Inside Lilys head the two voices were fighting again. See he has
changed, said the first. Its only been one day how do you know? the
second voice argued. Lily was siding with the first voice. Something
about James was different, but not in a bad way.
The rest of the day they spent in James room. James was itching to get
out of bed but Lily insisted he rest. He wouldnt have given in to anyone
else but this was Lily Evans, the girl of his dreams. They were enjoying
each others company and having a good time. James hated to see Lily go
that night but she promised he would get out of bed tomorrow and they
would go outside.
James was up at six the next day. He was excited about getting to spend
time with Lily. He was going to prove that he changed for her today.
Getting out of bed he went down the hall to the bathroom to take a
shower. Once he got out he put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
Fully dressed and downstairs James made himself some breakfast and ate
quietly. When he finished eating he put his plates in the sink and waited
patiently for Lily to come down. He didnt have to wait for long, he heard
footsteps upstairs and then a door close and the shower turn on. James
decided he would make her breakfast.
A little less than an hour later Lily came downstairs, her hair still wet.
Again she wore a skirt, red this time, with a black tank-top.
Lily, you look beautiful, said James
Thanks, she said blushing. You dont look too bad yourself. No rude
comment. Good sign, she thought.
Thank you, now it was James turn to blush. Just dont let it go to your
head, he told himself.
Whats that? she asked pointing to the plate of eggs and bacon on the
table.
Oh well I thought I would- er- make you breakfast, James mumbled.
Hes so sweet, Lily thought. And thoughtful, if he keeps this up he wont
have to chase me for much longer. What? she asked. He was smiling at
her.
That last bit you said. What was it again?
I really need to stop thinking out loud. I dont know what youre talking
about, Lily said with a flirty Im innocent look on her face
James played along and pulled out her chair for her pretending she hadnt
said anything. Lily took a seat and began to eat her breakfast. James sat
down next to Lily and watched her while she ate. When she was done
James put her dishes in the sink. In his head he was thinking about what
he was going to do next. He offered Lily his arm and she took it. They
walked outside together and into the backyard.
James, where are we going? Lily asked. He was now pulling her to the
right.
Youll see, he told her not wanting to ruin the surprise.
Lily couldnt help but marvel at the house. It was very big and the
backyard seemed like it was magically made bigger. Finally they stopped
at a small gate. It looked quite odd standing by itself and beyond that
there wasnt anything but grass.
Go on through, James said when he noticed her confused expression.
Lily opened the gate and walked past it. As soon as she stepped through it
changed. Where there was once only grass there was a variety of plants
that put the Herbology green houses at Hogwarts to shame. There was a
small waterfall and at the base of the waterfall there was a small pond. It
was beautiful.
Welcome to the garden Lily, James smiled when he saw the look of awe
on her face. I thought it would be nice to take a walk around here.
They walked around and looked at all the plants. James picked up a
beautiful flower out of the pond and placed it in her hair. It was a water
lily and each petal was shining like silver would but the same stunningly
white color of unicorn hair. They walked around a bit more. Lily was
completely awed by the beauty of the garden.
After an hour, James took Lily back to the pond at the base of the water
fall. He sat down at the base of a tree and Lily followed. The beauty of
the pond was entrancing, the way the sun reflected off the water and the
way the water from the waterfall jumped as it hit the pond.
Its beautiful, Lily sighed.
Yeah, it is, James whispered.
You arent even looking.
I know. I was talking about you.
Lily had an urge to kiss him then and there. She refrained herself and
placed her head on his chest, letting it rise and fall with the rhythm of his
breathing.
Im the luckiest person ever. The thought went through both of their heads
as they sat under the tree
The both of them fell asleep under the tree, Lilys head on James chest
and James breathing in the beautiful scent of her hair that had nothing to
do with the flower he placed there.

A/N: I know that it seems like i rushed Lily into liking James but you
have to remember that she was already confused and she spent a whole
day with him while he was wounded and unconcious and then another
day after that with him. and then they went to the garden.

hey guys. well i'm back from Aruba and i am typing up the next chapter
for you guys. it should be up tomorrow. i just wanted to let you know i
haven't forgotten about the story or my readers. don't forget to show

Sorry for the wait guys but here's chapter 6. i have a snowday today so i'll
be working on chapter 7 and i hope to have that up by Wednesday. once
again sorry for the wait.

Chapter 6: Lily's Fear
James awoke and sat up. He forgot Lilys head was on his chest until he
felt her slide off him and onto the soft grass. Shes so beautiful, especially
her eyes, he thought as he watched her eyelids open and reveal her big
emerald eyes.
Sitting up, Lily wiped the hair out of her face. She smiled as James fixed
the flower he put in her hair earlier that day. Well James Potter, you have
me. As long as you keep up the sweet and polite attitude at school I'm
yours, Lily said to herself.
What time is it? she asked James.
I think its around noon. Should we go back?
Yeah, she said despite her desire to spend the whole day in the garden.
We wouldnt want anyone to worry.
James nodded.
They walked back to the house in silence. Each one of them was thinking
of the other. When they reached the gate, James and Lily stepped through
it and the garden disappeared. Both were disappointed that they were
leaving the beautiful garden.
Upon reaching the house James Eagle Owl landed on his shoulder. He
told Lily he had to go upstairs to read the letter. As James made his way
up the steps Lily went into the kitchen with a huge smile plastered on her
face. She wasnt sure if she ever felt so happy about spending time with
anyone.
So, you and James have fun?
Lily turned and saw Karen sitting at the table. Lily didnt say anything,
she just kept smiling.
He took you to the garden, then? Karen asked pointing at the flower in
Lilys hair.
Yeah, Lily breathed.
I remember when Harry first took me into the garden, Karen said
reminiscently. James and his father are even more alike than they look.
Thats saying something, said Lily laughing at the fact that James and
his father could be mistaken for twins.
Yes, it is, Karen laughed too. James likes you a lot, you know, she
said sounding more serious. Hes always telling us how smart and pretty
you are. I can see why he fancies you.
He says that? Lily asked smiling again.
He even writes letters when you do something really brilliant.
Well, I fancy him too, Lily said, blushing a little. Hes being very
charming now that he isnt acting so big-headed. Just dont tell him. Im
waiting to see if he acts this way at school.
Karen laughed again. I was the same way with Harry. He was pretty bigheaded too; one of the best in his year, excellent Quidditch player, jinxed
anyone who annoyed him, didnt hesitate to hex anyone who insulted me,
and would ask me out all the time no matter how many times I turned him
down. He never passed up a chance to impress me either. Im guessing
thats how James acts.
Lily nodded with her mouth open. Karen was right; James and his father
were even more alike than they looked.
I told you.
So what changed your mind? asked Lily.
In our fifth year we were the only two Gryffindors in our year that
stayed for Christmas so we spent time together. I wasnt too keen on it at
first but as we were around each other more he didnt try and show off so
much. I started to fancy him. So, like you, I waited to see if he was the
same when his friends were there. After our O.W.L.s he asked me out,
except that time I said yes instead of rejecting him.
So he doesnt show off anymore? Or hurt people if they bother you?
No, he still shows off and Id feel sorry for anyone who insulted me
while hes around. It doesnt matter though. It only shows he cares.

Just then James and Harry came down the stairs with broomsticks over
their shoulders.
Dad and I are going to have a race. You guys want to watch? James
asked hopefully. He wanted Lily to watch.
Yes of course, Karen replied. Harry smiled widely.
Ill come too, said Lily. Hes so cute when hes happy, she thought
when she saw James put on a smile identical to his fathers.
Karen gave Lily a look that said See.

The Quidditch pitch wasnt like the one at Hogwarts. There werent any
stands along the walls and the three fifty foot high hoops were missing.
When we want to play my dad takes the invisibility charm off, James
told her when he saw her looking around. It would look weird to
muggles, they probably find the walls strange enough but my dad
couldnt cover the whole pitch.
Oh, right, Lily said. She had forgotten about magic.
They watched as Harry took out his wand, muttered something, and
started to move his wand as if he were drawing. When he finished they
saw a wide gold line appear at about the same height the golden hoops
would be. James looked over the twists turns and loops interestedly. Lily
looked at it confused; the upside-down loops reminded her of a roller
coaster.
She looked it over again and realized it was the path James and his father
were going to race on.
Interesting track Dad, I dont think it should be too hard, James said in
the deep voice he used to impress Lily, after looking over the path again.
I thought you would like it. No, I dont think itll be that hard to get
through, Harry replied in the same deep voice James used.
Lily and Karen looked at each other, rolling their eyes. Lily had to fight
hard to hold in her laughter. Karen looked as though she was fighting the
same battle.
Alright James, on the count of three, said Harry, he and James were in
the air at the beginning of the track. One two THREE!
James leaned in and started going as fast as he could. He loved the air.
Flying came to him easier than anything else had. The familiar rush and
roar of the wind comforted James. He could ride any broomstick and still
turn on a dime. This track was no different, and his excellent broomstick
only helped, he was able to follow it perfectly. His dad was in the lead so
James leaned in closer to his broomstick and caught up.
On the first dive James was able to take the lead. He pulled out and made
a sharp right, then a left, then another dive. Pulling out of the dive, James
readied himself for the first loop. He did it with ease. He prepared himself
for the second loop but wasnt able to gather enough speed. On the top of
the loop his feet fell off and he was hanging on by his hands.
Quickly and swiftly, James threw his feet over his broomstick and
finished the loop. Slipping had cost him his lead, so he leaned in close
once again and caught up to his dad. Luckily the last thing was a steep
dive and that was James specialty. He passed his dad and touched down
gently.
He dismounted but Lily nearly knocked him over again when she threw
her arms around him. James smiled as Lily dug her head into his chest but
noticed that his shirt was becoming a little wet. He pulled away and saw
tears streaming down her face.
Lily whats wrong? he asked.
Wh-when you s-slipped I-I thought you were g-going to f-f-fall, she
cried.
Its ok. Im fine, I promise. I didnt get hurt, he said soothingly.
I kn-know but I got so s-scared, Lily said holding him tighter.
Come on lets go inside, James said putting his arms around her.
Lily relaxed a bit as James comforted her. She let him lead her to the
house and into the living room. James sat on the sofa and made room for
her to lie down next to him.
Im sorry, Lily apologized, looking up at him. I really thought you
were going to fall.
Its ok, it doesnt matter, James told her, returning the gaze.
He was about to get up as Lily turned to look at the fire and settled
herself. Lily realized and moved her head to his lap so he couldnt get up.
Happily readjusting himself, James sat there stroking Lilys hair. Lily was
worried about me! Im not going to ruin this. I finally get a chance, he
thought excitedly.
I could stay like this forever, Lily thought. James touch was making her
more and more relaxed. Soon her eyelids began to droop and her
breathing became deep and steady. James noticed the change in her
breathing. Looking down at her he saw her eyes were closed completely
and she was smiling.
I wonder what shes dreaming about, he asked himself.
He lifted her head, got up, and walked into the kitchen. His gaze never
lingered from the sleeping teenage girl. Wearing a huge grin he sat down
at the table with his parents.
Whats got you so happy? asked his dad. Might it have something to
do with a certain red-head by the name of Lily Evans?
James felt his cheeks get hot.
Now Harry, dont tease, said James mom. I seem to remember a
certain fifteen year old boy at Christmas whose cheeks were always
redder than they should be when I was near him, even if we werent
outside.
This time Harry blushed.
Mum, I wanted to ask you something.
What is it deary?
Well, I sent a letter to Lilys friend last week to ask when Lilys birthday
was. I just got her letter and Lilys birthday is in a week. I wanted to
throw her a party. Is that okay?
Yes thats perfect; we can have two celebrations.
Why? James asked confused.
Your birthday is in five days, James. Remember?
Oh, said James embarrassed, right.
Well go to Diagon Alley tomorrow.
The next afternoon James, Lily, Harry, and Karen were in Diagon Alley.
They had split up and James had been walking around searching for
Lilys present. He had come across a few things but didnt buy anything.
He saw a jewelry store and decided to go in.
James was looking in the glass case against the wall when he saw it. In a
large glass case was a single item. A beautiful necklace with a thin golden
chain lay on a cushion in the case. There was a beautiful clear crystal
hanging on the front. The crystal looked like a diamond to James but it
somehow had a bit of every color in it while still remaining clear.
Can I see this necklace please? James asked the sales-witch.
Yes of course, she replied walking over and tapping the case with her
wand. The witch stuck her hand through the glass and pulled out the
necklace and handed it to James.
The necklace was even more beautiful up close and James could clearly
see it held every color in it. There was a red that reminded him of the
rubies in the Gryffindor hourglass at Hogwarts. As the image of the rubies
swam to the front of his mind the color of the crystal went from being
clear to the color of the rubies James thought of.
What happened? James asked perplexed.
This crystal will become the exact color of any crystal you think of until
you think of a new one or decide that you want it to go back to its original
state, the witch said.
This is perfect, James thought. How much is it?
One-hundred Galleons.
It was a lot but James had the money. Plus, he reasoned, she is coming of
age and her parents wont be able to get her a present from the magical
world. Can you hold this for me? I just need to run to Gringotts.
Yes, not a problem, the witch told him.
James turned and walked out of the store, then ran to the wizards bank.

Lily spent a while walking around Diagon Alley looking for a present for
James. She had almost bought him a gold watch that had tiny moving
stars instead of hands but decided that she would keep looking. Not
finding anything in any other store, Lily decided to go to Quality

Quidditch Supplies and look.
The first thing the store presented ended her search. In a large cage that
nearly reached the ceiling were about fifty Snitches. Not only were there
the normal gold ones with silver wings there but ones with colors of all
sorts were flying around. This was what Lily was going to get James. She
just needed to find the right one.
She watched as the tiny, metallic colored Snitches flew past. A blue one
with silver wings went past, followed by a black one with red wings,
followed by a green one with silver wings. Lily kept watching until a red
Snitch with gold wings flew past. Gryffindor colors! James will love it!
Excuse me, how much are the Snitches? Lily asked the wizard behind
the counter.
One Undred Galleons for the regulation ones; thosere the gold ones
tha ave silver wings. The restre seventy Galleons.
Can you hold the red one with gold wings for me? I need to go to
Gringotts. Lily needed to withdraw thirty more Galleons. She had forty
from exchanging her muggle money for wizard money.
Yea, okay.
Lily went out the door and hurried to Gringotts.

James was waiting in line at Gringotts when Lily came in.
Lily, LILY! Over here, he called to her.
Hi James, she said walking over to him.
Come stand in line with me, he said. We can get in the same cart.
Okay.
The line was short but to James the wait seemed to take forever. He
glanced at the clock. It had only been a few minutes. He always hated
waiting in lines.
NEXT, the goblin finally called.
James and Lily stepped up to the counter.
Names? the goblin asked.

James Potter."
Lily Evans."
Have your keys?
They pulled out their keys and showed them to the goblin.
Ill get someone to take you down, the goblin said after looking over
each key carefully.
A second goblin appeared when the first goblin called. He took them to
one of the doors in the hall. The goblin whistled and a cart appeared.
They all stepped inside and began their very fast descent down to the
Gringotts vaults.
James loved the cart rides to his vault. The twists, turns, and drops
reminded him of flying. Lily wasnt quite so comfortable on the ride to
the vault. She was always afraid of the cart tipping over. James looked
over at her and all excitement left him as he saw the look in Lilys eyes.
He put his arm around her and pulled her in close. She buried her face in
her hands as they went down a drop and rested her hidden face on James
shoulder.
Can I have the key? the goblin asked sticking his hand out in front of
James.
James handed him the key and got out of the cart. He stood there waiting
as the goblin unlocked the door. The locked clicked open and James was
engulfed in a cloud of green smoke. When it cleared James went into the
vault and filled his bag with Galleons.
When he was certain he had more than enough he left the vault and sat
back down in the cart. They took off again, Lilys face buried in James
shoulder whenever they made a sharp turn or drop.
The next time the cart stopped Lily got out with the goblin and was
engulfed in the green smoke when the door clicked open. With a lighter
load than James was carrying she went back into the cart.
Fortunately for Lily, the cart ride back up took less time than the one
going down. Unfortunately for her, there were a lot more twists and turns
on the path they took back up which only increased her fear.
Back outside James and Lily split up again. James went to the jewelry
store and Lily went to the Quidditch shop. They agreed to meet at the
Leaky Cauldron at five for a quick drink before they met Harry and Karen
to go home.
James walked down the street. When he reached the jewelry store he
walked in and bought the necklace.
Would you like that wrapped? the witch asked after placing the
necklace in a cushioned box.
Yes, thank you, said James.
The sales-witch waved her wand and the box wrapped itself in pink
wrapping paper. James took it off the counter and left the store. He put the
box in his bag made his way to the Leaky Cauldron.

Lily was wondering if she was ever going to get out of the store. The
Snitch, it seemed, just didnt want to be caught. The wizard in charge of
the store kept trying to catch it but it would fly away at the last second.
She watched as the Snitch flew to one place, hovered, and took off again
when the man tried to catch it.
Need some help?
Lily turned and saw Harry. Please! Lily said.
Which one? he asked.
The red and gold one. Lily pointed it out to him.
Harry quickly grabbed the Snitch and handed it to Lily.

Thanks Harry, Lily said walking over to the counter. I have to go. I
told James Id meet him at the Leaky Cauldron.
She put the Galleons down and placed the Snitch in the box the wizard
gave her. Then she turned and started walking to the Leaky Cauldron.

James and Lily were sitting in the Leaky Cauldron drinking their
butterbeers silently when James spoke up.
"Hey Lily?"
"Yeah?"
"Why are you afraid of falling?"
"Umm," Lily began, "don't you remember?"
James shook his head.
"In our first year when we had our first flying lesson I went pretty high up
and couldn't control my broomstick. I kept trying to go down but it just
kept rising. When I was about a hundred feet in the air I fell. Our
instructer was able to catch me about forty feet in the air but the sixty foot
drop shook me up pretty badly."
"Oh." James remembered that day. He had even followed her to the
hospital wing, but he doubted she knew that.
They continued their drinking and talking. James was able to stay polite
and once again Lily noticed. Only this time, after they paid, she said
something.
You know, James, I hope you keep acting this way with your friends at
school. Its a nice change, she said putting her face close to his.
James gulped. He wanted nothing more than to kiss her, to hold her. Just
wait, said a voice in his head, show her you can control yourself, show
her youve changed. Summoning all his will power he pulled his face
away.
Come on; lets go meet your parents. She took his hand and walked out
the door.
James was beaming. Lily was holding his hand. Her skin was soft and
warm against his rough hands. He was so happy he hadnt realized Lily
had stopped walking. Only when he bumped into a woman loaded with
shopping bags and nearly knocked her down did James notice Lily and
his parents were behind him.
Sorry, James mumbled.
Hmpf. The woman gave James a dirty look and kept walking.
Feeling slightly embarrassed, James walked back over to his parents and
Lily.
Well now that everyone is with us, lets head back, Karen said.
Lily giggled and took James' hand again. They walked back to the Leaky
Cauldron and took the Floo Network back to Potter Mansion.

i feel really bad about not posting when i thought i would. you guys must
hate me. i hope you like this chapter. it's my longest one so far, and also
my favorite.

Chapter 7: Happy Birthday
The three days following the trip to Diagon Alley passed uneventful. Lily
and James spent time together and Lily taught him about things that were
popular with muggles. He liked soccer because it reminded him of
Qudditch. Although, football did appeal to him when he found out he was
allowed to tackle people. He thought getting old Snivellus to join him and
the marauders in a game would prove to be pretty interesting.
James taught Lily how to play wizard chess. Unsurprisingly to him, she
caught on very quickly. They were having a game, which Lily was
winning, Sunday morning when they heard a knock on the door. James
opened the door to find Sirius and Jadzia standing in the doorway.
Hey mate. You feeling better? Sirius asked. I told Jadzia I was coming
over for tea and she wanted to give Lily her birthday present so I said I
would take her. Its okay right?
Im fine, he told Sirius. Lily is in the living room, he said pointing so
Jadzia knew where the living room was.
Jadzia entered the house and walked in the direction James was pointing.
A loud shriek let James and Sirius know Jadzia had found Lily.
So, Prongs, how is it going with Evans? Sirius asked.
Amazing; she hasnt yelled at me once. Except for when I woke up and
she told me never to scare her like that again. And listen to this, James
said as he excitedly told Sirius about what happened in the past few days,
starting with the garden.

Lily was sitting in the living room, in front of the chess board. She was
wondering what was taking James so long at the door and was turning
around to get up when she saw her blonde best friend.
Jadzia! Lily shrieked.
Hi Lily! Jadzia said hugging Lily.
What are you doing here? asked Lily.
I came with Sirius for tea, Jadzia told her. I wanted to give you your
present also, she said placing a neatly wrapped package in Lilys hands.
Hows it been with James?
Oh, well, its been okay, said Lily blushing.
Jadzia seemed to sense that it was much more than just okay because
she asked Lily to tell the truth.
Okay, fine, Lily gave in. She told Jadzia about her time with James.

Sounds like she fancies you mate, Sirius told James.
Dont get my hopes up, James sighed.
Im just saying I know! Sirius almost shouted.
What?
Ill ask Jadzia she might know about Lily.
Lily is going to think I put you up to it and then shell get mad at me.
Ill ask her in private. It couldnt hurt. Oh, and before I forget, he said
tossing James a package.
Before James could say anything else Sirius went into the living room.

So its been a lot more than okay, then, said Jadzia.
Yeah. Lily blushed again.
So are you going to tell him?
Tell him what?
Come on, Lily. Are you going to tell him you fancy him? Dont tell me
you dont, you wont stop blushing.
I never said I dont fancy him, Lily said.
I knew it, Jadzia said.
No telling Sirius, Lily said firmly. She knew her friends and Jadzia was
a big gossip. Im waiting to see what he acts like with his friends.
Why?
What if hes different around his friends?
You cant expect him to completely change Lily. Let him have some fun
with his friends. Even Remus isnt completely innocent.
I know. I just dont want him to be the same arrogant Potter. I want him
to be the sweet and charming James.
I dont think thatll be a problem, Jadzia said.
What makes you think that?
Well, Sirius said- but she was cut off when someone spoke.
Jadzia, sweetheart, can you come here for a second?

Lily saw Sirius standing there and gave her friend a firm look as Jadzia
got up. She looked back down at the chess board and turned around when
she heard footsteps behind her. James was walked over to the table and
sat down.
Hey, Lily greeted.
Hey. I wish I knew how she felt about me, James thought sadly.
What did Sirius tell Jadzia? Lily wondered. What were you and Sirius
doing?
Nothing, James replied quickly. What about you and Jadzia?
Talking, Lily replied. Want to finish the game?
What about Sirius and Jadzia?
I think I can beat you by the time theyre back, Lily replied playfully.
Oh really? said James sitting down.
Lily beat him, but not before Sirius and Jadzia got back.
Wow, Prongs, she got you good, Sirius teased.
I can still beat you, James told him.
This was followed by a very competitive game of chess between James
and Sirius. James ended up winning after Sirius took out James rook,
leaving a clear path for his bishop. The four were sitting in the kitchen
when James mom came in.
Oh, hello Sirius, dear, Karen said smiling. Howve you been? And
who is this lovely young woman? she asked him pointing to Jadzia.
Hi, Mrs. P, Sirius said. This is my girlfriend, Jadzia Skywalker Jade.
Hello, Mrs. Potter, said Jadzia.
Nice to meet you, Jadzia. You can call me Karen, though. Sirius just
insists on calling me Mrs. P no matter how many times Ive told him not
to.
Okay.
I was just about to make tea. I know James and Sirius want. What about
you girls?
Yes, please, they both said.
Would you all like lunch too?
They all said yes and Lily and Jadzia volunteered to help. Karen refused
at first but Lily and Jadzia insisted.
James and Sirius went out to fly around the pitch. They had a game going
where James or Sirius would do a stunt and then the other had to follow.
The two each pulled off some amazing stunts; James had swung off and
did a sort of back flip and Sirius had managed to stand on his broomstick
and jump down onto a second broomstick he had brought onto the field.
The game lasted for about two and a half hours. James ended the game
when he succeeded in doing the same stunt as Sirius but instead of
jumping onto another broom he jumped forward and landed on his own
broom. They headed inside where a smell that had made them both drool
met their nostrils. The girls and James mom had cooked more of a feast
than a lunch. James went over to help Lily with a particularly large platter
she was carrying and placed it on the table.
Thanks, Lily said breathing hard from the effort of carrying the platter.
So, you can cook now? asked James flirting. Any other talents I
should know about?
Ill make you a list, Lily replied in the same tone as James.
They sat down, Jadzia and Sirius across from Lily and James. Sirius and
James didnt hesitate in stuffing their faces. Each of them ate three
helpings of potatoes, roast chicken, and corn before Lily and Jadzia had
finished their first helpings.
That was great, guys, Sirius said swallowing his last mouthful.
Yeah, it was really good, thanks, James agreed leaning back on his
chair so its front legs were lifted off the ground.
Dont thank us, Lily said. Thank your mom. We only followed her
instructions.
They all went into the living room and started a game of Exploding Snap.
James told Sirius about football. Sirius had voiced James thought of
getting Snivellus to play. James laughed and then shot a nervous look at
Lily, she didnt seem to care. When they were finished playing Sirius
announced that he and Jadzia were going to head back to his place.
What happened to staying with Moony? James asked.
And I thought you told my parents you were going to bring me back
when we were done here, Jadzia said.
His parents said that I could go later in the month. They said they didnt
want to bother me, he replied to James. And, yes, I did tell your parents
I would take you back when we were done, but I never said what we were
going to be done with, he told Jadzia winking.
Sirius, you naughty boy, Jadzia giggled.
What, are you going to punish me? he asked mischievously.
I might.
She walked over and grabbed his hand and started to pull him out of the
room.
Bye guys, Sirius said.
Goodbye Lily, James, Jadzia said still pulling Sirius.
Bye, James and Lily both waved.
When Sirius and Jadzia were out the door James turned to Lily.
It looks like theyre going to have an interesting time.
Yeah, Lily laughed.
The rest of the week nothing else very exciting happened. James kept
wondering about Lily and Lily kept thinking about whether or not to tell
James. Part of her wanted to but part of her wanted to wait to see what he
was like at school. Before either of them knew it, it was the day before
James birthday, two days before the party, and three days before Lilys
birthday.
It was after dinner and James was in his room writing a note to give Lily
with his present. He was working very hard on it. Several crumpled up
pieces of parchment lay on the floor near the garbage bin. The garbage
bin itself was filled completely with crumpled parchment. Now, finally he
thought he had a good idea and wrote it down. He folded the note and
carefully and put it with Lilys present. He climbed into his bed and as
soon as his head hit the pillow he fell asleep.
Similarly, Lily was in her room writing a note for James. Unlike James,
though, the garbage bin in her room wasnt filled with parchment. She
hadnt written anything because she couldnt think of what to write.
Every time she decided to write something she changed her mind,
thinking it was stupid. Eventually she decided what she would write, and
wrote it down immediately before she could change her mind. Climbing
in her bed she kept thinking of what Jadzia had told her.
You cant expect him to completely change Lily. Let him have some fun
with his friends. Even Remus isnt completely innocent.
I dont think thatll be a problem.
Well Sirius said-
Sirius said what? Lily was getting frustrated. She wanted to know what
made Jadzia seem so confident that James wouldnt be big-headed around
his friends. Lily kept thinking and soon fell into an uneasy sleep.
****
James, James, wake up! someone screamed.
Another hour, James mumbled.
James, get up, the person persisted.
James opened his eyes slowly and reached for his glasses. When they
were on he saw Lily standing over him in a tank top and short shorts.
Happy birthday, she said when his eyes fully opened. Come on
downstairs.
Lily blushed when she James was out of bed. She hadnt realized that he
was only in his boxers. Every time she tried to look away from James
carved upper body she couldnt. Eventually she was able to avert her gaze
to James face, only to see he was unsuccessfully trying to suppress a
silent fit of laughter.
Ill let you get changed, Lily mumbled looking at her feet out of
embarrassment.
James quickly went into the bathroom to take a shower. He got out and
pulled on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and left his room. He headed
downstairs to the kitchen where his parents wished him a happy birthday
and Lily was sitting at the table, her cheeks still a light shade of pink.
James sat down in front of the pile of presents and plate of eggs and
bacon that were sitting on the table. He unwrapped the present Sirius got
him first. It was a pair of Quidditch gloves that had an extra-strength
gripping charm put on them so he could hold onto his broomstick better.
When he showed them to Lily a relieved look spread across her face.
Remus had sent a Defense Against the Dark Arts book; it was James
favorite class. Peter got him a big box of Zonkos products. He
unwrapped some more presents and was very happy with the outcome.
When he reached his parents gift his eyes lit up. It was suspiciously long
and he thought he knew what it was. Sure enough he was right, it was a
broom!
Whoa! he exclaimed hugging his parents. Mum, Dad this is the new
Nimbus!
We know. Your father saw it and said he would take your broom so we
could get you this one, said Karen.
Thanks Dad!
Its not a problem. Youre coming of age, you deserve a nice gift, Harry
replied. And speaking of coming of age, when do you want to go for
your Apparition testing?
I was thinking I would wait and go with Lily.
Lily almost choked. She forgot all about Apparition testing! Destination,
determination, deliberation, she immediately thought to make sure she
remembered.
Okay, said Karen. Lily, you are ready to test right? You dont have to
go yet if you dont want.
Oh- er- I guess so, Lily said.
Come on Lily dont be modest, youve been able to Apparate since the
second lesson, said James.
Alright. How about we go the day after my birthday?
Okay, James said turning back to his presents. Lily where is yours?
he asked when he noticed her present wasnt there.
I was waiting for you to ask for it, she said handing him a small box
with a note on top.
James decided to read the note first.
JamesIve had the most amazing time with you this summer. Please meet me
later tonight. I want to tell you something. I hope you like your present.
Love,
Lily
James got excited. Was she going to tell him how she felt about him? He
looked at Lily and nodded when she looked at him. James opened the box
and something shiny flew out. He stuck his hand in the air and
immediately caught it. He opened his hand to reveal a tiny red ball with
gold wings.
A Snitch? In Gryffindor colors? he asked shocked.
Yes, Lily beamed. Do you like it?
Like it? Its brilliant! he shouted.
He flung his arms around her, still clutching the Snitch.
I thought you would like it, she said laughing at how excited James was
They spent the day hanging around the house. Lily had told James he
could pick what he wanted to do and he replied by telling her he only
wanted to spend time with her. Lilys heart melted as the words came out
of his mouth.
Nothing else really happened that day because the party was tomorrow.
Neither James nor Lily cared though, they were just happy relaxing
together on the couch. James kept receiving packages and letters wishing
him happy birthday. There was a letter from the Ministry of Magic telling
him stuff he already knew, that now that he was a legal adult he would be
allowed to use magic outside of school and that he was now eligible for
Apparition testing.
James mom had made his favorite meal, roast beef, gravy and Yorkshire
pudding, for dinner. It wasnt a huge dinner, but James enjoyed it
nonetheless. He was heading into his room when Lily came up the stairs.
Lily! I almost forgot! What did you want to tell me?
Oh, Ill tell you tomorrow. Happy birthday, she said and kissed his
cheek. She blushed furiously. Goodnight. With that she walked down
the hall and into her room.
James just stood there in disbelief watching Lily walk away. Lily Evans
just kissed me! he thought. He couldnt care less that it was on the cheek
and could be passed as a friendly gesture. Lily Evans just kissed me! He
gently placed his hand on the spot where Lilys lips touched his cheek.
Lily Evans just kissed me! After five minutes of standing outside in the
hallway, staring at the spot Lily disappeared into her room, he went into
his own room. Lily Evans just kissed me! Soon he fell asleep.

James wasnt woken up by Lily the next day, but the other way around.
Lily come on. Wake up, he said pulling her out of bed.
Wha- James! Lily screamed. She was still in her night clothes; her
underwear and a short sleeve shirt.
What? Now were even, he said laughing a bit.
Okay, were even, now let me get dressed, she said trying to hide a
smile.
James left the room and headed downstairs. Lily came downstairs with
her hair a little wet a bit later. They ate their breakfast quickly and went
outside.
So, do I get to find out what you wanted to tell me? James asked.
Oh, right, okay, she started. Umm, well, Ive had the most amazing
time with you so far. I just want you to know that. Youve changed, and
for the better. Act this way at school and who knows. We might even-
but she was cut off by two handsome owls swooping down on them.
Perfect timing, she thought.
Looking down at the letters the owls dropped, Lily realized they were
Hogwarts letters. She quickly tore open the yellow envelope in her hand
and read the familiar letter reminding her that term started on September
first. Another familiar letter told her the list of books she needed. She was
about to put the envelope down when she noticed a third letter. She took it
out and read:
Dear Ms. Evans,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been appointed Head Girl
this year. On September first please report to the prefects carriage on the
Hogwarts Express to give the prefects their duties. After the feast you are
to go to the Headmasters office for further instructions.
Sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall,
Deputy Headmistress
Lily overturned her envelope and a shiny silver badge that read Head
Girl.
James! Im Head Girl! Lily shouted excitedly. Whats that youve got
there?
Oh, nothing, James said quickly putting his hands behind his back, just
my Quidditch Captains badge is all-
What do you have behind your back?
Noth- but it was two late. Lily pulled his arm from behind his back and
exposed the silver badge that read Head Boy that was in his hand.
Why didnt you tell me you were made Head Boy? Lily asked him.
You were so excited about being Head Girl. I didnt want to ruin it for
you by telling you I was made Head Boy.
Why would that ruin it for me?
Well, because the Head Boy and Girl stay in the Head Dorm together.
We share a common room and we each have our own bedroom.
Why would that ruin it for me? Lily repeated.
I just didnt think you would be happy about living with me, alone.
I dont care.
James face lit up. Really?
Yeah, why should I care?
I dont know, I just thought you would.
James thought he was going to burst with happiness. He was going to live
with Lily for the whole year, and the best part was that she didnt care!
She didnt care she was going to live with him, last year if you told her
that she was going to live with him she would have screamed. James
knew he was going to burst with happiness.
In her head, Lily was thinking the same thing as James. We get to live
together! We get a whole dorm to ourselves! She was very excited.
They went inside to tell James parents and send Lilys parents a letter.
James mom was ecstatic.
I cant believe it! It looks like we have more than birthdays to celebrate.
Oh, James, Im so proud of you! And Quidditch captain too! Oh and
congratulations to you too Lily.
Thanks Karen. Im just going to send a letter to my parents. Theyll
understand how important Head Girl is. James can I borrow your owl?
Yeah, hes upstairs.

That night James mom prepared a big meal. To James and Lilys delight
their friends were there, everyone except Peter, Frank and Alice who were
away. Even Remus was there. Remus and Sirius thought the Snitch was
the best present to get James. Sirius nearly choked because he was
laughing so hard when he found out James and Lily were going to share a
dorm. After dinner they all talked about their summers, Remus, Sirius,
and James leaving out their night time escapade. James, Sirius, and
Remus all shared their jokes about how much of a load off their shoulders
it was knowing that they didnt need to worry about being caught out of
bed with James being Head Boy.
Lily, can I talk to you? Sidney asked.
Yeah, sure.
Ill come too, Jadzia said.
Whatd you want to talk about? asked Lily once they were out of the
room
Hows it been going with James? Jadzia says you like him.
Lily sent a look to Jadzia.
What? You said I couldnt tell Sirius.
Lily looked at Sidney and nodded her head. Yeah, I like him.
HA! I was right! So have you told him yet?
Lily shook her head. I was interrupted when I tried last time.
They went back inside with the boys and played a game of Exploding
Snap in teams. It was James and Lily, Sirius and Jadzia, Remus and
Sidney, and Frank and Alice.
Soon, though, Remus had to leave and everyone followed suit. James and
Lily went upstairs to bed.

Lily woke up the next morning feeling anxious. She was thinking hard
about how to tell James without being interrupted. A deep voice took her
out of her thoughts.
Good morning. It was James.
Good morning, Lily said.
Happy birthday.
Thanks. What are you doing up so early?
Oh, I couldnt sleep, so I was going downstairs to make breakfast.
Would you like some?
Yeah, sure, she said getting up. She slept in shorts now so James
couldnt see her in her underwear again.
Ill go get your present since youre up.
This was the real reason James was walking by her bedroom. He really
wanted to give her the necklace.
Ill be right down.
James ran into his room and picked up the box containing Lilys gift as
well as the short note he had written asking her if she wanted to take a
walk in the garden. He also picked up the Snitch Lily got him and put it in
his pocket, he decided to carry it around in case he got bored. He ran back
out of his room to find Lily waiting for him.
Shall we go downstairs? he asked.

Yes, lets.
James thrust the present into Lilys hand when they were in the kitchen.
Lily unwrapped the box and opened it up. She gasped when she saw the
necklace. The crystal on the end was clear but still had every color
imaginable inside it.
Oh my god its beautiful, she said breathlessly.
Put it on, James urged. Here Ill help you.
He took the necklace and held one end in each hand. Lily pulled her hair
back so he could get the necklace around her neck. As he pulled the
necklace back so he could close the catch his hands brushed the sides of
Lilys neck, sending shivers down her spine. James let go once the catch
was closed and turned Lily around so he could see it.
The crystal rested elegantly on her chest. The many greens in the crystal
seemed to emphasize the emerald color of Lilys eyes. Thinking of how
much Lilys eyes resemble emeralds reminded James that Lily didnt
know to the crystal worked.
Lily, think of a crystal, he said excitedly.
Why? Lily asked confused.
Think of a crystal, any crystal, it doesnt matter.
Lily had no idea what James was thinking but she thought of the
Gryffindor rubies anyway. Lily looked at James, he seemed excited about
something. She followed his gaze to her necklace and saw that the crystal
was no longer the same one she was wearing before but a ruby, just like
the ones she imagined.
How did it turn into a ruby? Lily asked.
Well, it isnt a ruby, just the color of one, James said. The crystal turns
into the color of any crystal you think of and stays that way until you
think of a different crystal or want it to go back to normal. Do you like
it?
I love it! Lily said. But it must have cost you a fortune.
For someone as beautiful as you, it was worth every Knut.
Lilys heart melted and she wrapped her arms around James. She read the
note, took his hand, and they walked outside.

The garden was as beautiful as ever. Lily led James to the tree they had
sat under on Lilys first trip to the garden. James tried to speak but Lily
placed her finger on his lips.
So far this summer was incredible. I dont think Ive ever had this much
fun spending time with anyone before. Youve changed, James, and in a
good way. You are sweet and charming and polite. For that I think you
deserve this.
Deserve wha- James was cut off from asking his question by Lily
pressing her lips against his.
James had imagined this moment but he never thought it would be this
good. He never thought that Lilys lips would be so soft and warm, never
imagined that thousands of Dr. Filibusters fireworks would be going off
inside his head. He hadnt even thought this day would come.
Lily was surprised by her action but in a matter of seconds she didnt
care. There were thousands of fireworks going off inside her. In that
instant she only knew one thing, the kiss felt right.
After what seemed like forever, they broke apart.

Hey guys. I feel really bad about the wait. I have been really busy with
school; I've been teaching karate as well as taking my own classes;
lacrosse is starting soon. I have a lot to do. I was suffering from a small
bit of writers block but I wrote down some idea's for the chapter to make
it interesting and long.
Once again I am really sorry.

Heyy, don't worry about the wait...I totally understand about being busy
with school. Especially at this time of year, why is it that the nicer the
weather gets to more homework the teachers give? It's not fair. Anyways,
rambling, sorry. But yea, so don't worry about it.

Lilys waist while Lily lay with her head on his chest and her back against
his stomach with her arms folded over his. They would send small smiles
to each other, and on more than one occasion, think of the kiss and grin
sheepishly, then turn the color of Lilys hair when they caught the other
looking at them.
Karen had commented on how beautiful Lilys necklace was. She also told
James and Lily that they looked perfect together, which resulted in more
sheepish grinning and blushing. They had barely moved from their position
on the couch, only getting up when it was time for lunch and dinner.
Hey, Lily, James said after they were finished eating dinner. They were
sitting on the couch and James was stroking Lilys hair. What would you
say if I asked you if you wanted to relive the moment in the garden this
morning?
Do you mean the kiss? Lily asked. She blushed slightly.
Yeah. James blushed too.
Okay. Lily turned to face him. She moved her head closer to his and
pressed her lips against his. When they pulled apart James smiled widely
and Lily blushed again.

The next day they woke up early to go to the Ministry of Magic. When
James came down the stairs he found Lily sitting there with a bowl of
cereal in front of her. She was wearing the necklace that James had gotten
her, it was still ruby colored.
Morning, he said and kissed Lily atop the head, her hair smelled of the
flowery scent it usually did.
Morning, she smiled weakly at him.
Whats wrong? he frowned. You havent eaten anything. Do you feel
okay?
Im fine, just nerves. See? she asked putting a spoonful of cereal in her
mouth.
James grabbed her hand and gave it a comforting squeeze. Youll do fine.
Trust me, youll pass. My dad is going to take us soon on his way to work.
What does your Dad do? Hes at work a lot.
Hes an Auror, pretty high up in the ranks too. Hes really busy with all
the stuff thats been happening with Voldemort. He spat the name and
started muttering under his breath with a look of pure disgust on his face.
Stupid pure-blood mania cant wait til Im an Auror theyll get
theirs.
Lily had never seen so much hate in James eyes, or heard so much
loathing in his voice. She thought compared to this, just the way he was
talking, he treated Snape like a sweet five year-old child. Lily gave James
hand a squeeze, but not for comfort, to calm him down.
Sorry. I really cant stand that load of rubbish.
No problem, neither can I. Eat something, you need to relax for the test.
Otherwise you might end up splinching yourself. She pushed her cereal
bowl in front of James.
Im not hungry.
Alright, but try and relax, she said taking his hand again. I like you
whole. She gave him a kiss on the cheek and went back to her cereal.
James went into the living room where his father was sitting on the sofa.
He had a piece of parchment in his hand. It looked like a report. James
walked over to the sofa and took a seat.
Morning, James. Almost ready to go?
Yeah, Lily is eating. Shell be done soon.
They sat there; James playing with the Snitch Lily gave him, and his father
reading over his report. Soon Lily entered the room and they departed to
the Ministry of Magic, by way of Floo Powder.
When they arrived, Lily couldnt help but stare around the place. The
bright sunshine coming through the window completely contradicted the
morning mist outside, leading her to believe the windows were bewitched.
The ceiling looked like a big message board with odd shapes and symbols.
There was a mixture of, what looked like, paper airplanes and owls flying
around.
They made their way to the security desk. James and Lily registered their
wands and then they headed for the lifts. Once they were all inside the lift
it started to move. A female voice spoke out from inside the lift, seemingly
from every spot in the lift, telling them they were at Level Seven.
The doors opened and some people got out. Then the grilles doors closed
again, the lift started moving, and the same female voice said, Level Six,
Department of Magical Transport, incorporating the Floo Network
Authority, Broom Regularity Control, Portkey Office, and Apparition Test
Center.
This is us, said Harry.
James, Lily, and Harry exited the lift when the doors opened along with a
few other people.
Alright, you two, Im going to wait down on the entrance level. Come tell
me how it went when youre done, Harry told them.
James and Lily went over to a desk with a sign hanging over it that read:
Apparition Testing. An old witch was sitting behind the desk. She was very
thin and looked as though a slight breeze would blow her away; her hair
was white and wispy.
Hello, names, please? she asked.
James Potter, and Lily Evans, James answered for both of them.
The witch looked through a very long list on the desk. Evans Potter,
she said as looked over the long piece of parchment. Ah, here you are,
she said pointing to a spot on the list. You will need to come back here at
the end of the test to tell me the results.
James and Lily nodded their understanding and proceeded through the
doors. The doors led them into a room that was at least one hundred feet
long from the wall the doors were on to the back wall. James couldnt
guess at how far the distance from side wall to side wall was, but it was a
very big distance. They were each called over to an examiner as soon as
they stepped in.
Hello there, your name is? asked the elderly wizard who would be
giving James his test.
James Potter.
Ahhh Harrys son, are you? Yes, I remember giving him his test. He did
exceptionally well if I remember correctly. Ah well, to your test, the
wizard said in a back-to-business tone. You are to start in this hoop and
Apparate into every hoop. You are to Apparate back into the first hoop after
every hoop. So for example he said stepping into the first hoop.
The examiner then Apparated into the second hoop, then Apparated back
into the first hoop. Then he Apparated into the third hoop, and then
Apparated back into the first hoop.
This way we can make sure you are able to Apparate both short distances
and longer distances. When you are finished Apparating inside the hoops,
you are to Apparate to the witch sitting behind the desk. She will give you
a note proving that you were able to Apparate outside of the room.
James nodded and stepped into the first hoop. He concentrated on the hoop
in front of him and turned on the spot. With a loud CRACK! he was in the
second hoop. Turning again, with a loud CRACK!, he was back in the first
hoop. He repeated the pattern the wizard had shown him for ten hoops,
each spaced five feet apart.
James wiped away the small amount of sweat that was on his forehead.
Apparating wasnt hard for James, but doing it twenty times in a row was.
He was finished with the hoops, so concentrated on the room outside of the
doors. James turned on the spot, and was in front of the desk in seconds.
He grabbed the note the old witch had in her hand and Apparated back into
his hoop.
Excellent, excellent, the examiner stated. He looked James over and
started writing on the parchment he was holding when he seemed satisfied.
Congratulations, you did very well; and here you go.
James reached out and grabbed the piece of parchment that allowed him to
legally Apparate. In the bottom right corner was a ministry seal. In the
bottom left was, presumably, James elderly examiners signature. There
wasnt much else written on the parchment except for James name and a
line saying he was able to legally Apparate.
He walked through the doors and made his way over to the desk. James
handed the witch his Apparition license and she crossed his name off the
list.
All of a sudden James felt something jump on his back.
I passed! the person exclaimed. It was Lily.
I knew you would! Congratulations! James swung her off his back and
gave her a congratulatory kiss.
Howd you do? she asked him.
I passed too.
Lily gave James a kiss too and showed her license to the witch sitting at the
desk. The witch crossed off Lilys name and handed back both James and
Lilys licenses, smiling at the two.
Come on, lets go tell your dad we passed, Lily said. Then we can go
back to your house. Im pretty hungry.
James laughed and grabbed her hand. They walked to the lifts and headed
back into the entrance hall. When they got out they sought out James dad.
Eventually they spotted him and walked over. Harry clapped James on the
shoulder in congratulations when James told him his results, and shook
Lilys hand when he heard she had passed. He led them to the Apparition
points and they took off.
James had the feeling of being squeezed through a tight tube, not allowing
him to breath. Then as soon as the feeling had come, it was gone and James
was standing with Lily outside his door. James wasnt a fan of the
uncomfortable feeling that Apparition brought, but he had been told it took
some getting used to.
The next thing James knew the door was flung open and his mom was
hugging him tightly.
I heard you guys Apparate. Congratulations, she said pulling away from
James and turning to hug Lily.
Thanks Mum.
Yeah, thank you, Karen.
What would you guys like for lunch? Oh, and I just read through your
Hogwarts letters. We need to make another trip to Diagon Alley. James I

wouldnt be surprised if you needed new robes all together. And Lily do
you need any robes? Ill write to Sirius, I would feel terrible if he had to go
alone-
Mum, youre babbling. Relax. You can ask Sirius if he would like to come
with us when he comes over Sunday.
Oh, alright. I want you to try on your robes though. You too, Lily. Now,
what would you like for lunch? Are sandwiches okay?
Yeah, thats fine, Lily answered.
She and James went into the living room to sit on the couch. Lily had her
head on James lap while he played with his Snitch. His reflexes were
excellent. Lily giggled when she saw his muscles flex as he quickly
snapped his arm out to capture the Snitch.
Whats so funny? James asked when he noticed Lilys giggles. He
pocketed the Snitch.
Nothing, Lily giggled.
James started tickling her stomach. Lily was laughing hysterically.
James! she laughed. She tried to control her laughter but couldnt.
Stop. She tried to sound mad but she was laughing too hard.
I will when you give me a kiss.
I cant, she said in between laughs. Youre tickling me too
hard
James sat straight with an expectant look on his face.
Oh, no; you arent getting away that easily, Lily said sitting up.
Lily started tickling James. He was able to control his laughter but he still
fell backwards. She climbed on top of his stomach, one leg on each side of
him, still tickling him. James was able to grab hold of Lilys arms and
pulled her into a kiss. Lily pulled away
No fair, Lily said, pouting playfully.
In response, James pulled her in for another kiss. This time Lily stayed
down, but pulled away when James tongue grazed her lips.
Whats wrong? James asked. Too much?

No, no Its just, well, last summer I kind of went out with this guy. We
had just gone back to his house from eating dinner and we started kissing.
Then he tried doing well, more than kissing. I didnt want to but he
wouldnt let me go. I got out before he got to do anything, though.
We dont have to kiss like that if you dont want to.
I want to I just got startled, thats all.
Youre positive that youre okay with it, right?
Lily nodded and James pulled her in for another kiss. She accepted and
parted her lips, letting him deepen the kiss. At first she was shy and let
James kiss her but as the minutes passed Lily felt more comfortable and
wrapped her arms around James neck. She slipped her hands into his
messy hair and started kissing James back. Soon she found herself feeling
her way around James mouth.
James thought his first kiss with Lily would be the best by far. However he
was wrong; there were, if possible, even more fireworks going off inside
him now than during their first kiss.
Lily felt the same.
They pulled apart after a while, both their lips tingling. Lily was still on top
of James so she just lay down and put her head on his chest. When
someone cleared their throat they sat bolt upright.
Lunch is ready, Karen laughed.
James and Lily turned bright red and headed into the kitchen.
That night when Harry came home he told everyone that he was able to get
off work the next day. He said he had known for about a week and that he
owled a restaurant called The Draught of Peace Caf and made reservations
for them at seven oclock. According to him and Karen it was a very nice
restaurant.

The next afternoon, Lily was picking out a nice outfit for dinner. She
picked out her black spaghetti strap tank top and her black skirt and laid
them on the bed. Tapping them both with her wand she said, Cerdamin.
The two pieces of clothing combined and formed a black dress for Lily to
wear. It was a trick that she had learned in fourth year. She thought it
looked good so picked it up the dress and tried it on. It fit her nicely, it
wasnt too loose and it wasnt too tight. She went to find Karen, they had
become really good friends and Lily wanted her opinion.
It looks great, said Karen. Lily had found her in her and Harrys room
picking out an outfit for dinner.
Thanks, said Lily. Im going to go finish getting ready.

James was walking up the stairs. He and his dad had stayed downstairs
when his mother and Lily went upstairs to get ready.
What takes girls so long to get ready? he had asked his father.
Im not sure, Harry replied. Its best not to ask them, the last time I
asked your mother that same question I ended up listening to how hard her
hair is to manage.
Well, did you end up finding out why it takes so long?
No, I didnt really understand what she was saying, laughed Harry.
James laughed too.
Now James was up the stairs and in his room. He needed to try on his
school robes. He dug them out of his drawer and pulled them on. They
barely reached his ankles. He pulled out his dress robes just to make sure
they fit otherwise he was going to have to borrow a pair of his dads for the
night and he didnt like his dads robes.
They were deep red and luckily they fit. James pulled off the robes and put
them on the back of his chair. He lay down on the bed, knowing that he
didnt have anything better to do because Lily was getting ready.
Then he thought of something to do. He hadnt used it all summer. James
picked up his wand and said, Accio Two-way Mirror.
A small square mirror zoomed out of his trunk. James stuck out his arm
and caught it.
Sirius Black, he spoke quietly but clearly into the surface of the mirror.
He wiped away the mist that his breath had caused to appear on the mirror.
When he removed his hand he was looking into the grey-eyed face of his
dark-haired best friend.

Prongs? Whats up, mate?
Nothing; Im pretty bored. How about you?
Eh, its pretty boring here too. I saw my cousin, Andromeda, the other
day. Me and Jadzia met up with her and her boyfriend. His names Ted
something oh, right- Tonks; Ted Tonks. Hes a Muggle. Her mum isnt
too pleased about it, he said in a bored voice.
You and Jadzia seem to be spending a lot of time together. James had a
mischievous tone in his voice.
Sirius seemed to take no notice and said, Yeah, shes great, in an almost
dream-like tone.
You really like her, dont you Padfoot?
Yeah; I think that I- that I love her.
James was shocked. For all the years he had known Sirius, not once would
he have pictured him falling in love. Sirius had always skipped from girl to
girl. But now that James thought about it, it made sense. Sirius had never
stayed with a girl as long as Jadzia and he was never as affectionate with
another girl as he was with Jadzia.
Now I know why you havent given up on Evans yet. Speaking of
Evans Whats happened since I was there?
Oh, you know. We hung out, we talked, we kissed-
Kissed?!?! Sirius said.
Yeah, you know, that thing you and Jadzia never stop doing.
I know what it is What happened? Are you guys dating now?
Well, on her birthday we went into the garden and she said that she had
fun with me and then just kissed me. And yes, we are dating, James
said with a smile.
Sirius whooped. Finally!
James laughed. Then he heard a knock on his door.
I gotta go, Padfoot. See you Sunday, right?
Yeah, see you.

Just like that Sirius face left the mirror. James heard another knock.
Come in, James said, quickly hiding the mirror under his pillow.
The door swung open and Lily stepped in.
Were you talking to someone? asked Lily.
No, just myself, James said. He didnt want Lily to know about the
mirrors just yet.
Oh, okay, Lily said. She didnt completely believe him; she had
definitely heard someone that was different than James. She decided it
didnt matter. Well, Im going to take a shower.
About an hour later James heard the shower go off. According to the clock
it was a couple of minutes until six so he decided to go take a shower.
Getting up, James took the mirror out from under his pillow and put it back
in his desk drawer. He walked out the door and headed down the hall.
The bathroom door was unlocked so James walked in. There was Lily,
wrapped in a white towel. It was tied around her chest and was big enough
to cover her up but still short enough that most of her legs were showing.
She was drying her hair.
Oh, sorry Lily- the door wasnt locked said James. He averted his gaze
to the floor.
Lily walked over to James, wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed
him. James looked her up and down and grinned devilishly. Lily winked
and walked out the door.
She was surprised at what she had done; she hadnt played around like that
before. She didnt know why she did it, she just did. It didnt matter to her;
it was fun playing around with James like that.
Lily laughed to herself, thinking about what James would be thinking. She
went into her room to do her hair and get dressed.
Lily was nearly done with her hair; she had used her wand to make it
straight, instead of the waves her hair was usually in. She had only half of
it done so far but when she heard the shower turn off about fifteen minutes
after her encounter with James she walked over to her door and opened it
enough to see the door to the bathroom. This would be good.
James walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his waist and
started walking towards his room. Quietly, Lily crept out of her door and
walked on tip-toes behind James. When she was close enough she jumped
on his back.
James was caught off guard and stumbled forward a little before regaining
his balance. Lily slid off James and he turned around. He looked at her
quizzically.
What? she asked. Now were even.
James laughed. Yeah, I guess so.
They both headed back to their rooms to get dressed. James was ready in
ten minutes, he only had to pull on his robes and dry his hair. He figured
there was no use in combing his hair because it wouldnt lie flat anyway.
He shook his head, flinging little drops of water off of his hair, and ran his
hand through his hair. Then he pulled on his robes and went downstairs.
His dad was sitting in the kitchen, wearing dark blue dress robes,
drumming his fingers on the table. Obviously, James mom and Lily
werent ready to go yet. James and his dad talked about everything that had
been happening with the wizard named Voldemort; people had started
calling him You-Know-Who and would flinch at the sound of his real
name.
James thought this was a load of rubbish. He was going to listen to Albus
Dumbledore, his head master. He could clearly remember the speech the
whole school had received in James second year. Dumbledore told
everyone that fear of the name only increased fear of the thing itself.
When James mom and Lily came down, James was seething. Who was
this man to go around killing people? Who was he to decide that only
people of pure-blood descent were worthy of living? Who was he to bring
terror into peoples lives? James was disgusted. He was furious.
Only when he felt something small and warm in his hand did he come out
of his thoughts. He looked down and saw Lilys hand in his. James
immediately relaxed as he looked into Lilys green eyes.
She was stunning. Her hair fell straight down her back, she was wearing a
tight black dress, and her necklace was lying elegantly on her breast; it was
a bit darker than emerald, and looked like the green color of an apple you
would find during autumn.
James couldnt keep his eyes off of her. You look gorgeous, he whispered
in Lilys ear.
Why thank you. You look very handsome yourself.
He just noticed how she smelled. It was intoxicating; a combiniation of the
flowery scent of her hair and somehow the smell of a new broomstick
handle.
"Why do you smell like a broomstick?" James asked.
"It's the perfume Jadzia got me. It has a little bit of Amortentia in it."
How do I look? asked Karen.
What? Oh, sure Mum. Whatever you say, said James. He was too
absorbed with Lily to notice anything else.
You look beautiful, Karen, said Harry.
Thank you.
Alright, well, we should get going, Harry announced. Remember, The
Draught of Peace Caf.
Then he took Karens hand and they were gone. James followed suit; he
grabbed Lilys hand and then they Apparated to the restaurant.
Lily thought it was a very nice restaurant. She had never been to a wizard
one before, unless you count the Three Broomsticks or the Leaky
Cauldron. Inside, the walls were a calming blue color. Lily couldnt see any
waiters, only one witch standing behind a wooden stand; Lily figured she
was the hostess.
The hostess asked their name and then led them to their table. Lily was still
wondering where the waiters were when she took her seat. Her unasked
question was answered when a house-elf appeared at their table.
Good evening sirs and misses. I am Tokey. Is there anything you need
Tokey to get? It sounded like a female house-elf.
They all shook their heads.
Just call Tokey when you are ready. With that Tokey snapped her fingers
and disappeared.
Dinner was very good. The food was excellent, the wait was minimal, and
the service provided by Tokey was excellent. Harry and Karen insisted on
paying for Lily when she tried handing over her money.
When they got home Lily found herself exhausted. Thats the last time I go
to bed at two in the morning and wake up at six, Lily thought.
She and James made their way up the stairs. Lily was incredibly tired.
James noticed and offered to have her sleep in his room, as it was closer to
the stairs than Lilys. Lily nodded sleepily.
They went into James room and Lily lay down on the bed.
Where are you going? she asked when she noticed that James was
leaving.
Well, youre sleeping in here so I was going to sleep your room.
Oh, no. Youre sleeping right here. She patted the space on the bed next
to her and scooted over.
James climbed on the bed, in the spot next to Lily and put his arms around
her tiny waist. She placed her arms around his stomach and buried her face
in his chest. She took a deep breath, taking in his smell and fell asleep as
she exhaled.

A couple of days later they were in Diagon Alley, getting new robes and
school supplies. Sirius came with them also. He had brought Jadzia, who
was ecstatic that Lily and James were together, along with him. She said
her parents didnt mind because her mom was a Muggle and her dad didnt
like shopping very much.
The four were walking down the street; the threat of Voldemort hadnt
seemed to reach Diagon Alley yet, as everyone was up and about. They
were halfway to Madam Malkins Robes for All Occasions when a snide
voice spoke out.
Well, if it isnt Potter, Black, the Half-blood Skywalker, and the
Mudblood.
