Theyear20142015atourHighSchoolcampus(LCHS)openedwiththemajoreventof
thegrandopeningofournewfacilitiesonSeptember9,2014.Dignitariesattending
includedtheMinisterofEducation,theHonourableDonMorgan,pastpresidents
MorrisAndersonandRichardHordernaswellasmajordonorsMerlisBelsher(HS53)
andGavinSemple(HS63)andmanyotherfriendsandalumnioftheschool.Thenew
facilitieswerereadyfortheopeningofschoolandtherewasagreatspiritofcelebration
asoldandnewfriendsexploredandexperiencedarefurbishedLutherCollegeHigh
School(LCHS).Chapelcontinuedtobeheldintheoldgym,nowcalledtheMerlis
BelsherHeritageCentre,thoughtheconfigurationwasdifferentandsoonthoughttobe
betterasstudentsfacedthestageandgatheredonthreesidesofthecentralspeaker,
usuallyournewchaplain,Rev.DavidPeterson.Studentswereexcitedtouseallthe
facilitiesbuttheStudentCommonsturnedouttobeaparticularlyexcitingnew
additionforthestudentsofLCHS.
FundraisingforthesenewfacilitiescontinuedwiththecapitalcampaignATimeto
Build.AttheendofJune,2015,over$10.5Mhadbeenraisedtowardsthe$13.5Mgoal.
Dedicatedvolunteersandstaffcontinuetoworktowardsthegoalthatwillensurethe
schoolisnotburdenedwithanonerousdebtinfutureyears.
Asthefinishingtoucheswerebeingputonthefacilities,afireoccurredinthekitchen,
causedbyneededrenovationstotheductworkinthekitchen.Thisnecessitated
alternatecookingarrangementsintheformofakitchentraileruntilMarch.MikeStobbs
andhiskitchenstaffenduredtheextraworkmostadmirably,continuingtoserve
appetizingandhealthymealstoourstudents.
OnJanuary23,2015,aparentsgroupatLutherCollegeHighSchoolhostedthefirst
everBlackandGoldGalameanttobothraisefundsandpromotefellowshipamong
theparentsandfriendsofLutherCollege.Over175peopleattendedandbecauseofthe
superborganizationoftheparents,over$40,000wasraisedforthenewfurnitureinthe
StudentCommons.Theparentorganizersthemselvesenjoyedtheirtimeorganizingthe
galaandarecommittedtomakingthisanannualevent.
TheLCHSstrategicplanattheLCHScampuscontinuedtounfoldwithmajorwork
accomplishedintheareaoffacultyprofessionaldevelopment,determiningand
enhancingtheplaceoftheIBprogramintheCollegesacademicofferingsand
developingthepositionofAthleticDirectorwitharenewedemphasisonthesports
teamsandwellnessaspectoftheCollege.TheSeniorLeadershipTeamalsoworked
hardatdetermininghowtomaximizetheuseofthenewfacilities.Securitywas
determinedtobeanissuewiththenewfacilitiesbutmoneyandworktimewassetaside
forthesummerof2015toensurethisaspectoftheLCHSoperationwasaddressed.
AttheUniversitycampus(LCUR),havinghadthestrategicplanMeetingthe
Challengesofa21stCenturyLiberalArtsCollegeapprovedbyourBoardinJuneof
2014,workbeganonitsfirstyearofimplementation.Teamswereformedaround
themeslikeacademicprogramming,studentprogramming,studentdiversity,capacity
building,marketing,recruitingandphysicalplant.
WithmoneyreceivedfromtheMinistryofAdvancedEducationtoremovetheasbestos
inourresidence,aplantorenovatethefortyfouryearoldstructurewasapprovedby
theBoard.TherenovationisexpectedtobefinishedbyChristmas,2016andinvolves
newwindows,newheatingsystems,newfurniture,newshowersandahostof
aestheticimprovementslikecarpetingandlighting.TheCollegealsoengageda
marketingfirmtohelpdevelopaplanfortheCollegewho,likeallotherliberalarts
collegesinCanada,issufferingfromdecliningenrolments.Themarketingplanwas
approvedbytheBoardinJuneandkeymessagesaswellassignificantaspectsofthe
planwillberolledoutinthefallof2015.Inanefforttoensurethatstudentsknowthat
ourChristiancontextinvolvesbeinghospitabletoallstudents,genderneutral
washroomswerededicatedbyourchaplaininthespringof2015.
Asearchforanew,permanentchaplainattheLCURcampuswasinitiatedinthespring
of2015.Afterinterviewingfourverystrongfinalists,thepositionwasofferedtoPastor
SeanBellwhowillbegininAugustof2015.Hiscrewofdedicatedpeerchaplainswill
help,mostofwhomhavebeeninplaceforthreeyears,toeasethetransitionforhim
andtheCollege.WiththeretirementofMaryJesse,ourlongservingandincredibly
dedicatedRegistrar,asearchwasinitiatedbyDeanGreifenhagen.Again,after
interviewingastrongslateoffinalists,thepositionwasofferedtoTatumCruisewho
willbeginherpositioninthesummerof2015.
OurBoardwasveryactivealso.TwomoreRegentscompletedtrainingsponsoredby
theMinistryofAdvancedEducation,joiningthreeotherRegentsinbecomingcertified
ProfessionalDirectors.AnEnterpriseRiskManagementpolicy,inventoryandregistry
weredevelopedandapprovedbytheendofJune,2015fillingakeygapindicatedby
theMinistrysgovernancepolicyinventoryayearearlier.Humanresourcepolicies
regardingthehiringofseniormanagementwerealsoapproved.Finally,our
GovernanceCommitteeinitiatedastudyregardingwhatalternativestherewereto
whatconstitutesourcorporatemembership.Fornow,itwasdeterminedthatweare
besttostaywiththecurrentlegislationwhereinourmembershipisconstitutedbythat
ofthenationalconventionoftheEvangelicalLutheranChurchinCanada(ELCIC).In
thisregard,theBoardalsoapprovedamemorandumofunderstandingthatwouldsee
furthermeaningfulandmutuallybeneficialcollaborationbetweenLutherCollegeand
theELCIC.
Theyearwasabusyyearwithmanyaccomplishmentsbyourhardworkingstaffand
faculty.Thisannualreportgivesmeachancetoexpressmyappreciationtoallthose
whohaveworkedsohardforthesakeofourstudentsaswellasthewellbeingand
futureofourCollege.IincludeinthisnumberourvolunteerBoardwhoputsinso
manyhoursofdeliberationandcontinuestoamazemewiththeircreativeandstrategic
thinking.Aswell,ourthanksgoouttoallouralumniandfriendswhocontinueto
supporttheCollegeandmakeitalivingembodimentofGodsworkofgraceamongus.

InformationNights
InformationnightsattheHighSchoolcampuswereheldonNovember20,262014,
January27,2015,andMarch4,2015.Atotalof160familiesattendedtheinformation
nights.ThankyoutoAlisonKeramatiforallofhergreatworkinorganizingand
hostingtheinformationnights.
Enrollment
Forthethirdconsecutiveyear,incominggrade9classenrollment(approximately103)
wasstrong.Totalenrollmentin2011415was425students.

Agraduationsurveywasconductedforallgrade12students.85%ofthestudentswho
respondedtothesurvey(82of105)indicatedtheirreasonsforattendingLutherwere
fulfilledand84%wouldrecommendLCHStootherstudents.Themostfrequently
listedadvantageofattendingLutherwassmallclasssizesandclosecommunity(65%)
anduniversitypreparation(63%)andmostfrequentlylisteddisadvantagewasthe
heavyworkload(32%).

CAIS(CanadianAccreditedIndependentSchools)
AspartofLutherscontinualpursuitofexcellence,theprocessofLutherCollegeHigh
SchooljoiningtheCAIS(CanadianAccreditedIndependentSchools),whichisoften
describedasacommunityofthebestschoolsinCanada,beganinthefallof2014.
BecomingamemberschoolofCAISwouldbetterpositionLuthertoprotectandenrich
theschoolsreputationasacenturyoldhistoricinstitutionthatprovidesaquality
educationinaChristianContext.DavidKeeping,DirectorofSpecialProjects&
BusinessDevelopment,wasassignedtheroleofCAISCoordinator.Tworepresentatives
fromCAISvisitedtheHighSchoolinJune2015asafirststepinassessingand
approvingLuthersapplicationtojoinCAIS.
HighSchoolChaplaincy
PastorDavidPetersonhascompletedhisfirstyearofworkingatLCHS.Muchofthis
yearhasbeenanorientationtothedifferentcommitteesincludingSeniorLeadership;
AcademicandAdvisingandtheBoard.PastorDavidhasbeengratefultoPastorLarry
Fryforhisgoodadviceanddirectionwhichhashelpedthetransitionimmensely.
PastorDavidhasparticipatedinmanyoftheschooleventsthroughouttheyear
includinginformationnightsandstudentfocusedactivities.Thechaplainregularly
connectswiththeAdministrationtokeepabreastofeventsandconcerns.
Muchofthisyearsenergyhasbeenspentinhisfirstyearofsoloteaching.This
involvedfamiliarizinghimselfwiththeexistingChristianEthics30(CETH30)material
andresourcesandadaptingthem.Thecoursefocusedonseveralthemesincludinga
basicunderstandingofethics,Jesusethicsasportrayedinhisparablesandactionsas
wellassocietalethicalissuessuchasjustice.Thiscomingyearwillincludedesigninga
speciallytailoredCETH30coursethatwillaccompanytheupcomingElSalvadortripin
early2016.Thiscoursewillfocusonissuessuchaspovertyandwealthandmore
internationallyrelevantconcernssuchasfairtradeeconomies.
ThechaplainhasonseveraloccasionssupportedProDdayswithshortreflectionsand
meditations.Inadditiontoprayersandscriptureprovidedatceremonialoccasions(e.g.
CandlelightService),worshipopportunitiesweremadeavailabletostaffandfaculty
duringAdventandLentwithearlyFridaymorningcommunion.Thechaplainhas
focusedonaninclusiveformofChapelworshiptosupportthemanybeliefsand
spiritualtraditionsattheSchool.Oneapproachhasbeentofindcommonground
throughafocusontheGoldenRule,mutualrespect,justiceandcommunitybuilding.
Guestshavebeenwelcometospeakinchapelandthiswillcontinuehopingto
broadenthescopetoincludedifferentspiritualtraditions.

ALUMNIRELATIONS
TheAlumniRelationsofficeattheHighSchoolaimstoengagealumni,parentsand
friendsoftheCollegewithintheLuthercommunity.Westrivetodevelopmeaningful,
impactfulandlifelongrelationshipsbetweenLutheranditsmultigenerationalalumni.
Overtheyears,ouralumnihavebeenextremelyloyaltoLutherbecauseoftheirrich
experiencesandlonglastingconnectionswithfellowalumniandteachers.
Hereisalookbackatsomeofthememorablealumnieventsoverthepastyear.
Homecoming
ThisyearsHomecomingwasheldonSeptember12and13,2014.Itattracted41alumni
fromtheclasses1944,1954,1964,1974,1984,1994and2004,aswellas20facultyand
staffmembers.OveraglassofwineandsomehorsdoeuvresonFridayeveningat
Crave,ourguestscaughtuponeachothersnewsandsharedstoriesofuniversitylife,
newjobs,travelplans,andengagementsandweddingceremonies.OnSaturday,
attendeesenjoyedchapelatthehighschool,brunchandtoursoftheschool.Inthe
evening,theHomecominggalawasheldinthenewstudentcommons.

Areceptionforthescholarshipdonors,studentreceiptsandtheirparentswasheldin
thestudentcommonsfollowingtheceremony.

AboutfiftyalumniandfriendsoftheCollegeenjoyedadessertandcoffeereceptionat
thePresidentsHousebeforetheFridayOctober24,2014eveningperformanceofthis
yearsfallmusicalBeautyandtheBeast.

OnDecember17,2014LutherhosteditssecondannualJingle&MingleEvent,afun
eveningofminglingandfellowship.Theeveningincludedcarols,treats,musical
performances,craftsandfacepaintingforthekids,acookiesale,agingerbreadhouse
giveawayandLionsDenmerchandisesales.
AlumniBasketballGame
TheannualalumnibasketballgamewhichheldonSaturdayFebruary14,2015during
LITweekendprovedtobeaspopularaseverwith38players.Thisthefirsttimethis
eventwasheldinthenewgym!Participantsandspectatorsenjoyedbrunchinthe
cafeteriafollowingthegame.

ThisyearourCalgaryalumnireceptionwasheldonJune10,2015attheCanadas
SportsHallofFamewithfiftypeopleinattendance.Specialguestwasretiredfaculty

BaccalaureateServiceonJune26,2015.Wehadoversixtypeopleinattendance
includingdonors,recipients,parentsandfamily.Alumnipinswerealsohandedtoall
Grade12graduatesastheexitedthestageattheBaccalaureateService.
DEVELOPMENT
Wearepleasedtoreportthatdevelopmentactivitiesatthehighschoolremainsteady
withouralumni,parents,grandparents,boardmembers,staff,facultyandfriendsofthe
CollegecontinuingthetraditionofgivingatLuther.
ATimetoBuildCampaign
ThispastyearhasbeenaremarkableoneinthehistoryofLutherCollege,aswe
celebratedtheopeningofournewfacilitiesatthehighschool.FundraisingforourA
TimetoBuildcapitalcampaigncontinued.

includesdonationsfromalumniandfriendsoftheCollege,aswellasreservefrom

OurFallAppealletterfortheHighSchoolwasfocusedontheATimeToBuildcapital
campaign.Thisletterinspiredalumniandfamiliestodonateatotalof$26,843.Our
SpringAppealletterhelpedtoraisemoneyfornewbleachersintheoldgymnasium,
nowcalledtheMerlisBelsherHeritageCentre.Thisappealbroughtinatotalof$20,105.
OurfirsteverParentAppealletterwassentoutinJune2015andraisedover$4,000.

ClimateJustice:LoveasEcologicalEconomicVocation.Dr.MoeLobedahaslectured
orconsultedinAfrica,Asia,Europe,LatinAmerica,andmanypartsofNorthAmerica
intheology;ethics;andmattersofclimatejusticeandenvironmentalracism,
globalization,moralagency,publicchurch,andecofeministtheology.Dr.MoeLobeda
holdsadoctoraldegreeinChristianEthicsfromUnionTheologicalSeminary,Affiliated

ForwardTogetherLecture2015
LutherCollegeattheUniversityofRegina(LCUR)isoneofthreefederatedcollegesat
theUofR.Establishedin2009,theForwardTogetherLecturehighlightsthefour
institutions(UofR,LutherCollege,CampionCollege,andFirstNationsUniversityof
Canada)jointcommitmenttoacommonacademicandsocialpurposethatpromotes
inclusiveness,understanding,socialjusticeandhumanrights.Cosponsoredbythefour
presidentsoftheseinstitutions,theseventhannualForwardTogetherLecturewasheld
onTuesday,January27,2015entitledTheWayfinders:WhyAncientWisdomMattersina
ModernWorldbyDr.WadeDavis,aHarvardeducatedethnographer,writer,
photographerandfilmmakerwhoservedasExplorerinResidenceattheNational
GeographicSociety(NGS)between1999and2013.

TimetoBuildcampaignandraisingmoneyfornewbleachersintheoldgymnasium,

TheUniversitycampusFall2014Appealletterfocusedonraisingmoneytoestablish
tenscholarshipsforaboriginalstudents.

TheFoundersDayDinnerisatimewhenLutherCollegepauseseachyeartohonour
theindividualswhosecontributionsallowtheCollegetopursueitsmissionandfulfill
itsvision.Theeveningisnamedinrecognitionofallthosepeople,pastandpresent,
whohaveparticipatedintheestablishmentandgrowthoftheCollege.
OnThursday,November6,2014,over120friends,alumni,facultyandstaffofthe
CollegegatheredinthenewStudentCommonsareaatLutherCollegeHighSchool
(LCHS)tocelebratetheCollegesdonorsandsupporters.TheeveningbeganwithDr.
FranzvolkerGreifenhagen,DeanofLutherCollegesUniversitycampus(LCUR),
welcomingeveryone,followedbygreetingsfromBishopSidHaugenonbehalfofthe
EvangelicalLutheranChurchinCanada(ELCIC),andgracebyPastorDavidPeterson,
LCHSChaplain.AfteradelectablemealservedbyMikeStobbs,ManagerofFood
ServicesatLCHS,andhisstaff,Dr.BryanHillis,PresidentofLutherCollege,provided
anupdateonthestateoftheCollege.Duringdessert,musicalentertainmentwas
providedbyJoshuaHendricksen(HS08),alumnusofLCHSandsecondyearFineArts
studentatLCUR.
Thepinnacleoftheeveningwastherecognitionofthethirtyfourdonorsenteringa
newcumulativelifetimegivinglevelandthepresentationofthe2014Distinguished
ServiceAwardposthumouslytoReinandEllaSommerfeld,acceptedontheirbehalfby
theirson,EricSommerfeld(HS70,U79),anddaughter,Ruth(Sommerfeld)Dempsey
