REFLECTION ON READING

This is the second week of our third phase course at ELTC. The trainers help me to
understand the right methods and concepts of teaching Reading in the classroom. It is important
for me to teach with the right methods and skills so that my pupils are able to receive the right
information throughout their learning by improving their reading abilities. In order to gain
information or to enhance knowledge of language, pupils need to read because reading is an
activity with a purpose. The ability to read opens up new opportunities such as to gain new
knowledge, enjoy literature and do everyday things like reading comics. But before they are able
to do that, I as a teacher need to take into account that pupils come with different levels of
abilities and needs.
The trainers help us to identify the challenges in teaching reading based on our own
experiences. We share ideas and knowledge on how to overcome the challenges in the future.
It is a necessity for me before I can develop the pupils abilities to read words, phrases and
sentences. It is important for me to further develop their reading ability so that they can progress
to read variety of texts using appropriate reading materials to enhance pupils reading skills. The
trainer helps me to understand the principles of teaching reading by explaining to all of us.
There are six principles that a teacher should know before teaching reading in classroom. I
need to encourage pupils to read as often as possible so that they can develop their vocabulary,
grammar and also their confidence. Pupils also need to engage with what there are reading so
that they will have a better understanding. Overall, I as a teacher need to take the initiatives to
learn the principles and know the purpose of my teaching.
The trainers also introduced us with the 3 stages of teaching reading. It has open up my
view of teaching reading using different methods so that I will be able to cater my pupils need
that come from different levels of abilities and needs. During the Pre Reading stage, I need to
facilitate the pupils activities before they are expected to read it. For While Reading stage, I can
use different strategies to help my pupils such as making predictions where pupils need to
integrate and combine what has come with what is to come. There a lot of strategies to help the
pupils. It is up to the teacher to choose which strategies that suits well depending on the pupils
needs. The last stage is the Post Reading stage, where the teacher needs to help the pupils to
derive the meaning from what they have read by checking for accurate comprehension of the
text. There are lot of activities that I can use during my teaching, such as retelling, reflection and
also sequencing. Not only that, the trainers also show me the important to assess my pupils

during reading with different types of reading assessment such as Assessment for Learning and
Assessment of Learning. All these knowledges will sure help me a lot in the future.
