SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Honoring Our Past, Securing Our Legacy

100-Year Campaign for Gamma Psi

fall 2015

RENOVATIONS ARE COMPLETE, BUT CAPITAL

CAMPAIGN IS IN THE HOME STRETCH
We Need Your Help

to

Reach $1.25 Million Before February 1

ctober 3 was a very proud day for all brothers

of Gamma Psi as we united for a ribbon cutting
ceremony, celebrating the remodel of our beloved chapter
house. The event was the perfect opportunity for alumni
and actives to come together and witness the impact our
investments have made on the brotherhood.

While there is much to celebrate with the completion of
construction at 729 E. Grand River, we must remember
that the 100-Year Campaign for Gamma PsiHonoring
Our Past, Securing Our Legacy still needs our attention.
Through the generosity of 214 alumni and friends, we
have raised $1,053,032 to date! Thanks to your loyalty,
our projections show that with an additional $200,000,
Gamma Psi can be debt free in five years. Gifts of any
size are needed to help us accomplish this goal.

interaction than ever before, Sigma Chi at Michigan State

University is well positioned for many years of growth and
prosperity, but we cant stop here. In order to continue
making a difference in the lives of these young men and
to lessen the burden of debt, we need your help to raise
$200,000 before the campaign ends on February 1.

Throughout this whole process, especially after attending

the ribbon cutting event, I have been filled with a sense
of promise for the future of our chapter. As alumni, we
understand that our gifts are more than an investment
in our physical structure; they are an investment in the
young men of Gamma Psi. The undergraduates continue
to impress us, receiving recognition on back-to-back
covers of The Magazine of Sigma Chi, recruiting 31
new members to the fall pledge class, and serving as
outstanding leaders on campus.

Thank you for your consideration. I hope that you will be

able to return to 729 E. Grand River in the near future,
meet the active members, and witness the dividends of
your investment. Youll be glad you did.

The ongoing support that we have received from alumni

is as equally inspiring. With more alumni engagement and

Brothers, I ask that you continue to invest in Sigma Chi

with me. With the years end upon us, please consider
making an additional gift to the campaign. As you may
remember, we are now offering the exciting opportunity to
have a pavestone personalized with your message of choice
for a donation of $500. If this option interests you, please

to extend your giving through a multi-year commitment.

amma Psi Chapter returned to campus this year after a busy and successful
summer. The executive team spent time together over numerous conference calls,
a weekend retreat, and the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop, where brothers
began planning for the upcoming school year. In addition to preparation for what was
to come, our chapter had the chance to recognize its efforts over the past year as we
brought home our second consecutive Peterson Award for chapter excellence. We were
extremely proud to accept the award from our National Headquarters. We strive to be
better each and every day.

Tim Shank 62 Finds His Identity at Gamma Psi

Alumnus Gives Back to Help Provide a Similar Experience

ven though Tim Shank 62 only spent one

year living in the Gamma Psi chapter house,
he made some of the best memories of his life
there. He joined Sigma Chi as a sophomore at
the encouragement of Tom Hext 62 and Bob
Lennon 62, but what really sold him on the
chapter was the group of men that gave him a
new perspective. Being in a fraternity helps you
develop so much as an individual, rather than
just another student, Tim says. The fraternity
gives you a personal identity, and that was
unique and important to me.

that we had. If we can make a

difference for some of these men,
help [them] build camaraderie,
live, and work together, thats a
valuable experience. Thats why
I supported the renovation and
updating of the chapter house.

Some of Tims favorite memories are of Gamma

Psi. He remembers the xylophone calling
everyone into dinner, Robert Chickering 61
leading Mom Webster into the dining room, and
the rest of the chapter following. The house was
the focal point for functions and camaraderie,
he says.

The brotherhood that Tim

experienced during his time as
an undergraduate would not have
been possible without E.B. Hill
1915, who served as the chapter advisor. He and
his wife, Irene, were dedicated to Sigma Chi and
everyone aspired to be like them, he says. Now,
Tim sees Rich Nemesi 81 filling the same role.
I give him so much credit for the time, patience,
and dedication in the rebuilding process of the
house, he said. Both he and EB have been
great role models.

Tim lived in the sun room in the back of the old

chapter house, which the six men sleeping there
dubbed the poop deck. During the winter, it
got so cold that a cup of water would freeze
solid overnight. After sleeping there during the
winter, I realized that we needed a new chapter
house, he says. The new house opened in 1963
and it needs to be updated. We want to be able
to give the current brothers the same experiences

Tim says maintaining contact with a good

number of his brothers has been much easier
thanks to the Internet. It also helps that most of
his brothers coincidently have winter homes in
the Cape Coral, Naples, Bonita Springs, and Fort
Myers Beach, Florida, areas. He stays in touch
with Jim Delligatti 64, Mike Roach 66, Jim
Morton 64, Ken Way 61, and Calvin Pratt
66. Its a gift for many of us to be able to end

Robert J. Geyer 43 turned 94 in October 2015. He

is suffering at times with the effects of Alzheimers
and dementia, yet has kept a good disposition
and outlook toward others. Robert has difficulty
traveling and cannot attend Sigma Chi functions.
His son writes, Thank you for remembering him.
He was your first chapter president. Robert lives
in Albion, Mich.

Bruce J. Greenman 43 and his wife are only

two years away from their 75th anniversary. They
reside in East Lansing, Mich.

He encourages brothers to go back

and see the chapter house and
relive the memories. Once the
process gets started, people will
come along, Tim says. When
one person donates a little, then
get updates on the chapter and the
progress of the projects, they are
induced to contribute more.
After graduating from Michigan
State, Tim received his MBA from Western
Michigan University. He worked in a few
different businesses before starting his own real
estate company, Michigan Real Estate Services,
then went into the real estate investment
business, building and leasing buildings to
major corporations. Tim and his Sigma Chi
sweetheart of 52 years, Judy, split their time
between Michigan and Florida. They have
a daughter, Kimberly, a MSU alumna, and
a granddaughter who lives in Schaumburg,
Illinois. Tim is semi-retired and has taken many
opportunities to travel all over the world with
Judy and other friends. Every winter they go
to Cancun, Mexico, for two weeks. He stays in
Michigan through most of the football season
and can often be found at the games. E-mail Tim
at tfshank@aol.com.

As the school year began, one of the most

important events of the year, recruitment
week, was the first task our chapter faced.
Through careful planning at BLTW,
Recruitment Chairmen Alex Breedan 18
and Mike Murri 18 brought in 31 men who
exemplify the Jordan Standard and are worthy
of being called brothers. With a record 300
young men coming through our doors during
the week, it was crucial that Alex and Mike
were well prepared and organized.

To kick off the start of the years philanthropic

efforts, we hosted Fight Night during the first
week of October. The event, chaired by John
Bach 16, was the most successful one weve
ever had. We increased relations among
our fellow fraternities by inviting them to
join in on the event, and they came out in
full support. We had five boxers volunteer
from Sigma Chi along with boxers from 10
different fraternities! At the end of the night,
we raised $9,000 for charity. The event was
a huge success and promoted Sigma Chis
positive public image.

As many young alumni pointed out to me at

Homecoming this fall, chapter morale has
never been greater. Gamma Psi continues to
improve on a daily basis and gain new luster
for the white cross. It is nothing short of an
honor to be the leader and consul of such
great brothers.
