InrecentdiscussionsofonlineprivacyregardinganupcomingsitecalledPeeple,a
controversialissuehasbeenwhatcrossesthelineofconsentandprivacy.Thissiteaimstocreate
areviewsystemforindividualpeoplemuchlikewhenoneisonlineshoppingforaproduct.On
onehand,somearguethatwhatthissitepromotesishonesty,andthatitwillhelppeopletogetto
knowapersonbeforetheyevenmeetthem.Fromthisperspective,privacyisnotaverybigissue
becausethereviewsthatarepostedarejustcollectedandcentralizedpublicknowledgethat
allowsyoutoseewhosomeoneiswithoutmakingamillionphonecalls.Thiskeepsinmindthat
thesitewillbefilteringoutanyprivateinformation.Ontheotherhand,however,otherscontend
thatthiscreatesanenvironmentwhereinformationaboutpeoplewillbeunconsentuallyposted
onlineforanyonetosee.InthewordsofDewey,anexpertonthistopic,Itsinherently
invasive,evenwhencomplementary.Anditsobjectifyingandreductiveinthemannerofall
onlinereviews.Accordingtothisview,Deweyapparentlyassumesthatthistypeofsystemwill
createanenvironmentwhereitfeelslikeyouareconstantlybeingjudgedandfaulted.For
instance,ifyouaresomeonewhoisveryselfconscious,thiscouldbedisastrousforyour
confidenceinpublic.Insummary,then,theissueiswhetherthePeeplesitemodelwillactually
behelpfulorsimplyviolatethepersonalprivacyofindividuals.

Myownviewisthatthistypeofsiteisanoutrageousviolationofpersonalprivacy.
ThoughIconcedeDeweysclaimthatbanningbadbehaviors(profanity,sexism,privatehealth
conditions,etc.)willhelptofilteroutinformationdeemedtoopersonal,Istillmaintainthatthis
sitesmodelcrossesthelineofhavingaconsensualonlinepresence.Deweymentions
theexampleofhowonlinereviewsareonlygivenbypeoplewhoeitherloveorhatewhatis
beingreviewed,whichIfindvalidbasedonmyownexperiencewithstatisticsbecausein
conductingasurvey,thisiscalledvoluntarybias,anerroneouswaytoaccuratelyrepresentwhat
mostpeopleactuallythink.Althoughsomeparentsmightobjecttotheideaofbanningthese
typesofwebsites,Iwouldreplythatwhilethereispotentialforittobegood,thesetypesofsites
thatwalkthelineonprivacytendtocausemoreharmthangood.Ultimately,whatisatstake
hereistheconstitutionalfreedominAmericatobeincontrolofyourpersonalprivacy.

suddenlyopentothescrutinyofthepublic

Thisquoteutilizespathostomakealasting
effectonthereader.Thereaderisprompted
toinstinctivelythinkofalltheembarrassing
