1.

A structural panel in a ship can be idealized as a rectangular plate with three edges
simply supported and one edge free. The plate is subjected to a concentrated edge
load P as shown in Figure 1. For simplicity, the deflection of the plate (w) is
approximated by the following function:

x
w cy sin ,

where c is a constant.

(b)

A landing craft of length 70 m may be assumed to have a rectangular, box-shaped

cross section of beam 12 m. The empty weight is 400T evenly distributed over the
whole length, whereas the load of 200T is spread evenly over the middle 40m of
length.
(i)

Draw the load, shearing force and bending moment diagram for the loaded
craft.
(15 marks)

(ii)

Determine the position and value of maximum bending moment acting on the
craft.
(5 marks)

Explain and give reasons why the fatigue strength of a welded joint is distinctively
different from that of a non-welded structural member with similar geometric stress
concentration factor.

3(a)

List four factors that influence the S-N curve and indicate briefly what the influence
might be in each case.
(8 marks)

(b)

A stepped shaft has a diameter change from d1 = 37.5 mm to d2 = 25.0 mm, with a
fillet radius of 1.55 mm and the notch sensitivity factor, q = 0.90. The shaft is
subjected to a steady axial pull of 60 kN and a uniform bending moment, M. If the
yield strength of the rotor material is 300 MPa and the fatigue limit in reversed
bending is 200 MPa, determine the maximum value of M to avoid fatigue failure in
the rotor.
(8 marks)

(c)

A test specimen is subjected to a fully reversed cyclic strain with a strain gauge, of
0.04. The material has the following properties: modulus of elasticity, E = 207 GPa ;
cyclic strain hardening exponent, n' = 0.202; cyclic strength coefficient, k' = 1200
MPa. Determine the stress-strain response of the material and sketch the stress-strain
hysteresis loop.
(9 marks)

4(a)

What are the types of typical defects that can be found in engineering components,
and state the sources that cause these defects to occur.
(8 marks)

(b)

A large sheet of aluminium alloy is loaded in tension to a stress of 200MPa. If its

yield stress, y = 400 MPa and fracture toughness, KIC = 42 MPa
, calculate the
maximum tolerable defect size, using
(i)
(ii)

Linear elastic fracture mechanics.

A plastic zone correction.
(7 marks)

(c)

A spherical pressure vessel is made of ASTM A517-F steel and operates at room
temperature. Its yield stress is 760 MPa and fracture toughness, KIC = 187 MPa
.
The inner diameter is 1.5m, the wall thickness is 10 mm, and the maximum allowable
pressure is 6 MPa.
(i)
(ii)

Is the leak-before-break condition met?

What is the safety factor on K relative to KIC, and what is the safety factor
against yielding?
