FAMILY BACKGROUND:
Jeffrey P. Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His mother was still in her teens, and
her marriage to his father lasted little more than a year. She remarried when Jeffrey was four.
Jeffrey's stepfather, Mike Bezos, was born in Cuba; he escaped to the United States alone at age
15, and worked his way through the University of Albuquerque. When he married Jeffrey's
mother, the family moved to Houston, where Mike Bezos became an engineer for Exxon.

Jeffrey's maternal ancestors were early settlers in Texas, and over the generations had acquired a
25,000-acre ranch at Cotulla.

Jeffrey's grandfather was a regional director of the Atomic Energy Commission in Albuquerque.
He retired early to the family ranch, where Jeffrey spent most of the summers of his youth,
working with his grandfather at the enormously varied tasks essential to the operation.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
From an early age, Jeffrey displayed a striking mechanical aptitude. Even as a toddler, he
asserted himself by dismantling his crib with a screwdriver. He also developed intense and varied
scientific interests, rigging an electric alarm to keep his younger siblings out of his room and
converting his parents' garage into a laboratory for his science projects.

converting his parents' garage into a laboratory for his science projects. When he was a teenager,
the family moved to Miami, Florida. In high school in Miami, Jeffrey first fell in love with
computers. An outstanding student, he was valedictorian of his class. He entered Princeton
University planning to study physics, but soon returned to his love of computers, and graduated
with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering. After graduation, Jeff Bezos found
employment on Wall Street, where computer science was increasingly in demand to study market
trends.

LEADERSHIP STYLE:
The leadership style of Jeff Bezos is an intriguing one. Given the extraordinary success and
sustained growth of Amazon.com, Bezos leadership style is well worth paying attention to. His
company is a giant of e-commerce, and a strong example of the ways in which a company can
continue to grow, even after it has accomplished a great deal.

Ten percent of the e-commerce in North America is controlled by Amazon.com. A great deal of
that success can be attributed to the leadership qualities Bezos has brought to his position at
Amazon:
1. Bezos clearly believes in the value of customer satisfaction. Over five hundred measurable
goals are used to track the rate of how Amazon performs and wishes to perform. An astonishing
eighty percent of those goals are related to the satisfaction of the customer.

2. In regards to customer satisfaction, Bezos has been known to keep an empty chair in place
during staff meetings. This chair is designed to represent the customer, who Bezos feels should
always be on the mind of Amazon and its employees.
3. Bezos leadership style has frequently been described as eccentric. A good example of this
would be the use of drones in deliveries.
4. Bezos believes that taking wild risks that defy expectations can lead to inventiveness in the
workplace.
5. Bezos has a leadership style that has been described as extremely blunt, yet not to the point of
being considered cruel by those who have worked or continue to work for him.
6. Bezos isnt afraid to make decisions that would be considered unorthodox by business
insiders, coworkers, the public, and the press. Experimentation is clearly a cornerstone of his
leadership style.
7. Bezos has repeatedly displayed a willingness to fail, as long as something innovative was
attempted.
These are some of the leadership principles that Bezos has used to guide his work with
Amazon.com. While it could be said that his approach to leadership isnt for everyone, his
approach is one that does seem to create positive results a great deal of the time.

THE 7 PRINCIPLES BEHIND JEFF BEZOS SUCCESS:

1. Customer Obsession
2. Think big. Be bold
3. Intellectual Curiosity
4. Long Term Thinking and Resiliency
5. Bias for Action. Speed matters

6. Manage for Results. Drive

7. Insist on the Highest Standards
These 7 principles have guided Amazon from the idea stage to where the company is today. They
are likely to guide Amazon for many years, or at least while Jeff stays at the helm.
Jeffs 1997 letter to shareholders highlighted the three key points behind Amazons
strategy: obsession over customers, innovation, and long-term thinking. These three principles
are the same ones that guide the company today, and can be summed up in the following
statement from Jeff Bezos quoted in the book:
What makes us different is this: We are genuinely customer centric, we are genuinely long term
oriented and we genuinely want to invent. Most companies are not those things: they are focused
on the competitor rather than the customer. They want to work on things that pay dividends on
two or three years, and if they dont they move on to something else. They prefer to be close
followers rather than inventors because it is safer.
