The Use of Technology by Science Teachers Among High Schools in Cabiao,

Nueva Ecija: Its Relationship to Academic Performance

Background of the Study
Teachers are expected to prepare students for the 21 st Century of:
o Competition, Communication, and Costumer
Technology has already influenced the way our LEARNERS LEARN
o And teachers as well in their mode of instruction (Bilboa, et.al. 2014)
o Teachers use instructional media or media technology or learning
technology or simply technology. (Bilboa et.al.)
It has been widely required to introduce technology in our schools (Govender
and Govender, 2014)
o For them to become knowledge builders and critical thinkers in the 21 st
Century
Use of Technology is Required:
o Create appropriate learning environment for the 21 st Century
(Davidson, et.al., 2014)
o Students is in the digital era (Digital Natives) born from 1980s
Problems: (Govender and Govender, 2014)
o Lagging Support financially
o Teachers are not well prepared to teach with computers and internet
o Absence of technologies (Rodrigo, 2011)
o Lack of coordination
Students are not fully equipped as a domino effect (Castillo et.al. 2014)
GLOBAL
o Leaders in Technology are Finland, US, and UK (DepEd, Philippines)
o Belgium, Singapore, and Denmark are envisioning (Rodrigo, 2011)
o China and Uganda (Industrialized nations)
o ASIA
Countries are aware of importance of technology (DepEd, 2012)
South Korea and Singapore (are already Advancing)
Thailand and Cambodia (still in the near Beginning)
LOCAL
o The government and the private sectors are already initiated programs
(Rodrigo, 2011)
o But there is a gap in the Implementation
o There is lacking of documentation of schools that use technology
o There is a little basis for making of policies
o Deficiency in the coordination of efforts
o As a Result:
Waste of time, waste of money, and waste of human resources
o Technology is out of sight (same with other countries in SEA)
Lack of chairs, tables, blackboards, books, etc.
o LAWS:
1998 Interagency Educational Technology Master Plan
(DOST, CHED, TESDA, and DTI)
1999-2000 DECS computerization program
2000
Information Technology bill was passed by HoR
2001
Project Cares (DepEd) to improve ICT literate
manpower
2005
e-Philippines Plan
2011-2015 Philippine Digital Strategy

K-12 infusion of Technology

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Constructivism
o Make learning activities meaningful to students (Korr, 2013).
o Technology use in the classroom is a Constructivist approach for
students and even teachers
o Utilize previous knowledge to understand the present
o Learners are occupied in critical thinking
Behaviorism (B.F. Skinner)
o Used for Programmed Instruction
Cognitivism
o Influences teachers instructional design
o Brain-based learning
E-Learning Theory
o Effectual Multimedia learning using technology
Continguity Principle
o
PARADIGM OF THE STUDY
The extent of use of technology by Science teachers will be revealed
o Their current Knowledge
o Their actual implementation in their classrooms
o
Science Teachers profile will come into play
o Highest degree obtained
o ICT training obtained
o Age
o Length of Service
o Institution Serving
The extent of their motivations of utilizing will be discovered also
o Also with the problems that they are encountering
Significant difference between
o Use of Technology
o Academic Performance in the Science subject
Need for this Research:
NEPT (Davidson 2014), there is a need to conduct research that will provide
relevant information on the inclination of teachers in the use of technology
Significance of the Study
o Science Teachers contribute to their awareness of providing
developmental opportunities
o Science Classes
picture them to modern technologies
and teach them suitable teaching strategies.
o Educational Policymakers for continual support of our investments in
the developments in our education
o Students
to be prepared to become scientists in the
future.
