DCCK Healthy Corner Trends
To start, Josh and I decided to look at the median salaries in the
different wards of DC. Data trends may be correlated to the income of
customers. The table below shows the salaries listed from highest to
lowest by ward.

Healthy corners are not currently active in wards 3 and 2

(according to 2015 data). Thus, ward 6 has the highest median salary
(87k) in which the healthy corners program is operating. Ward 8 has
the lowest median salary (30k). We decided to compare data trends
between the two. First, we decided to look at sales of produce units
and total produce costs in order to get an idea of how much these
different wards are utilizing the program.

Looking at this table, it would appear as ward 8 is utilizing the program

and purchasing much more produce than ward 6. However, ward 8 has
22 healthy corner locations, while ward 6 only has 2 locations. Knowing
this, the table above makes more sense. We decided to look at the
store that sold the most in each ward and compare sales, revenue and
waste.

Ward 8s most successful store sold exponentially more units

than ward 6s, however ward 8s sales vary greatly between stores,

while ward 6s two stores are very similar in sales. For example, in
ward 8 Elbo Market sold only 25 units cumulatively, however they have
not purchased since January. After comparing the wards, we concluded
that while ward 8 has higher produce sales in particular stores, other
ward 8 stores have significantly less sales than ward 6 stores, which
have more consistency.
We decided to next look at waste in these most-successful
stores in relation to revenue. We also investigated items that were
wasted the most.

When looking at the waste by month, there was significantly less

waste by the end of the year. This is probably due to storeowners
gradually learning consumer demand for products.
Moving in a different direction, just because a store has the
highest revenue, doesnt mean they have the least waste. We decided
look at all the stores in ward 8 and see which store had the least
%waste based on potential revenue. Because ward 8 has multiple
stores that did not purchase on multiple months, we decided to
exclude stores that have missed 4 or months of purchasing this year.
The ones highlighted in red are the ones with the most profit loss. The
ones highlighted in green are the ones with the least profit loss.

From the table above, we were able to construct several

generalizations pertaining to revenue and waste.
Those with the highest amount of revenue had the least amount
of % profit loss from waste
Those with the least amount of revenue had the highest % profit
loss from waste.
January through March shows the highest amount of waste
across the board from all stores
From this data, we suggest that in the winter months of January
through March we make store owners in this ward aware of the
products that have been wasted the most in 2015, so they can plan for
winter months in 2016. Minimizing waste will help these store owners

expect lower profit loss and motivate them to continue to be apart of

the healthy corner program.
We also decided to look at Ward 6 to compare trends in %profit
loss. To review previous information, Ward 6 only has two stores,
Millies Market and The Cupboard. In the table above for Ward 8, we
excluded stores who did not purchase for 4 or more months this year.
Neither store for Ward 6 would meet this criteria, thus data would not
be comparable to data in Ward 8. Although specific data trends should
not be compared to Ward 8, Ward 6 data supports the trend that
January-March are the months are the months that produced the most
waste.
