TO MAKE THE CUT OUT TM TO NORMAL FOLLOW THE SAME SEQUENCE.
DOS AND DONTS IN MEP LOCO
DOS
1. Keep always TE Limit switch in Normal
position unless and until required.
2. Keep MCOS switches always in ON
position for normal operation.
3. Make a habit to check position of these
TE Limit and MCOS switches while taking
overcharge.
4. Switch OFF Circuit breakers MCB1 and
MCB2 on control desks while cranking.
5. Press start button till cranking
contactors picks up. (more than 60 sec. if
pre lube feature is available.)
6. Switch ON circuit breaker CEB within 30
minutes while checking lube oil level.
7. Switch OFF circuit breakers MCB1 &
MCB2 in case of Rear Locomotive to avoid
VCD function.
8. Keep EPG cutout Switch in OFF
position in trail / dead locos.
9. Apply loco brakes through SA9 and
ensure BCP is more than 2Kg./Sq.Cm.
while loco is stabled
10. During continuous wheel slip and total
power reduction, act as in the case of
wheel slip with conventional Locos.
11. Apply brakes and do fast pumping on
8thnotch if loco stalled with message TM #
Excess current.
12. Apply loco brakes when total power is
reduced at 95 deg. Centigrade to avoid roll
back.
13. Press VCD Reset when the VCD Lamp
blinks
14. Reset penalty brakes only when
1.Loco speed is zero and
2.Throttle is in IDLE and
3. VCD lamp stops blinking.
4. Reverser in neutral.

DONTS
1. Do not keep TE Limit switch in Limit
position unnecessarily when not required.
2. Do not keep MCOS in OFF position
while all motors are working.
3. Do not start the loco with out ensuring
these switch position.
4. Do not crank the engine with MCB1 &
MCB2 in ON position. Otherwise penalty
brakes are applied if BCP is not build up
within 94 seconds.
5. Do not release the start button in
between. Otherwise the time starts again.
6. Do not switch OFF Circuit breaker CEB
and then do complete loco checking.
7. Do not keep MCB1 & MCB2 in ON
position in rear locomotive. Otherwise load
meter does not respond in rear loco.
8. Do not keep the EPG cutout switch in
ON position in rear / dead locos.
Otherwise MR pressure reduces.
9. Do not release loco brakes while loco is
stabled. Otherwise VCD apply penalty
brakes.
10. Do not reduce notch for momentary
wheel slip and loco is moving.
11. Do not reduce notch for the message
TM# Excess Current while theloco is
moving unless and until warranted by
railroad signals.
12. Do not release brakes till the
locomotive is ready to move. (@ 90 deg.
Centigrade of engine temperature.)
13. Do not isolate VCD magnet valve
cutout cock unless and until the valve is
leaking.
14. Do not try to reset penalty brakes if
1. Loco is moving, or
2. Throttle is in notch / Dy. brake

5. Working control stand.

3. VCD lamp is blinking.


4. Reverser in forward/backward
5. Non working control stand.

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE DRIVERS FOR TROUBLE SHOOTING OF WDM-2 LOCOS


Cause
1. FUEL OIL PRESSURE NOT
BUILDING UP :

Remedial Action
1. Check Fuel oil in the Fuel Tank.
2. Check battery knife switch and all circuit breaks
on the control compartments and control stand
for proper closing.
3. If fuel pump contractor is not picking up, pack
FPC with a suitable wooden wedge(You can do
it also in case, where operating coil has burnt).
4. Check carbon brushes of fuel pump Motor and
clean, if necessary.
5. Tap the relief and regulating valve lightly.
6. On the FPB emergency switch provided on
emergency switch Board.

2. ENGINE NOT CRANKINK :

1.Ensure battery knife switch is closed,


2.all circuit breaker are in ON position.
3.Place ECS in IDLE & MUSD in Run position..
4. Engine can be started by pressing the fuel
linkage along with pressing the start button.

3. ENGINE CRANKING BUT NOT


STARTING :

1. Main amphenol plug on the governor to be


checked for stackness.
2. Check over speed trip handle. If tripped, reset.
If
outer taper pin is broken, replace with any
suitable steel pin.
3. Check the shut down plunger of PG Woodward
Governor, if tripped reset.
4. Check contact tips of CK2 if found welded
release them tapping with any wooden piece.

CRANKING WITH OVER SPEEDING :

1. Check OPS oil pipe any leakages and attend.


Wire No.7150 K for loose/broken condition to
OPS.
2. Check for binding on Fuel Racks.
1. Check wires of Exciter 55, 56, 47 in the

terminal box for loose/broken connection.


2. Check governor amphenol plug for slay fitting.
3. Check SAR Coil for broken/loose wire in
connection with 31Z 31T and attend (only for
locos with Electro Hydraulic Governor).
4. In E type loco check junction box and back
panel for broken wire No.31 L. 31M. 31N.
6. ENGINE SHUTTING DOWN
WITHOUT ANY INDICATION :

7. ENGINE NOT RESPONDING TO


THROTTLE(ENGINE SPEED NOT
RISING ON OPENING THROTTLE) :

8. LOCOMOTIVE NOT MOVING ON


OPENING THROTTLE :

1. Check over speed assembly and reset.


2. Check oil level in Governor, if less, fill, clean
fuel oil to avoid failure.
3. Check for broken and loose wires in
EPRS(static)and ERTS.
4. Check circuit breakers on the control
compartment and control stand for open/tripped
position, reset it.
5. Check lub oil pressure in idle if low then do not
notch down below 2nd notch.
1. Check ECS-bring it to Run Position.
2. Check control circuit breakers(MCB1 &
MCB2)on both control stand, if tripped reset.
3. Check PCS, if defective, put emergency switch
to ON, if provided. To isolate PCS, close cut
out cocks of HS4 and HB5 relay valves(in long
hood control stand and normaly painted with
yellow). In case, this is not possible, remove
wire No.30 k-4 from PCS and tape them
together.
4. Check DMR, if not picking up, operate it
manually and pack with suitable wooden
packing at the backtop position and in the centre
of DMR.
5. Check position of BKT1 BKT2, it should be
on Monitoring side. If not operate manually by
L type handle provided in the C/panel.
6. Check Ground Relay for tripping-reset it.
7. Check for defects in ESR- 1,2,3,4 coils and
attend any defects noticed.
1. Reversor handle may be in Centre/Neutral
Position.
2. BKTs may not be coming to motoring position.
Operate manually by L shape handle provided
in the control panel.
3. Check control air pressure in the Gauge inside

nose compartment and adjust if necessary.


4. Check GF contactor, if not picking up, pack GF
contactor with suitable wooden pieces, after
shutting down the engine in such cases parallel
transition should not take place remove LS-W
in case of static locos and remove Card No.2 in
type 3 transition and Card No.4 in case of 6
transition locos.
5. (a) Check and clean P1 contactor N/C interlock
8m-8F-clean if necessary.
(b) If P1 Power contactor found operated and
welded, then shut down the engine, remove
Arc chute, separate the two contact tips
clean the tips. Fit back the chutes.
6. Check Magnet value wires of S1, S21, S31,
magnet values. Reconnect.
7. For STATIC locus check, loose broken wire
terminals of F1, F2, in ERP 1,2,3, Secure them.
8. If GF contactor not picking up. Apply GF
emergency switch.
Check S1 Power contactor magnet value wire
No.8M 4 For looseness/breakage, secure
properly.
9. LOADMETER NOT SHOWING ANY
CURRENT READING BOTH THE
C/STANDS :

10.WHEEL SLIP INDICATION :

1. Put emergency switch in ON Position at 20


kmph and put it in OFF again when speed
goes below 15 kmph.
2. Check for broken/loose wire connections at the
axle generator terminal box. Check for any
water ingtess etc.
3. In case of STATIC locos, check SSR 2, if
defective interchange with SSR 3.
4. Check interlocks and wires of CR2 relay, S31,
S1 Power contactors for foreign body or
broken/loose wires(STATIC).
5.In case of E-type locos, check TR1 & S1, S31,
P1, P32 power contactors interlocks as above.
6. In case of 6 transition locos in addition to above
check FSR2 relay connection.
7. Check field shunting contactor F31 interlock for
loose/broken wires and any foreign body(for 6
Transition locos only)
1. In case of intermittent wheel slip, case the

throttle to lower notches. Also check for Brake


binding and excess load. If there is no sand, use
small pieces of ballast.
2. Check for parallel transition switch, it should be
not ON when starting the load.
3. Check for welding of shunting contactor tips on
the back panel or tips of parallel power
contactors. Separate and clean the contact tips.
4. Check for loose/broken wire connection No.
GA 2 or GA -11 of WSRR at the back panel
and secure them.
5. Check for permanent magnetisation WSR
relays. Release the relay manually.
6. If wheel slip occur in series then try to work in
parallel by applying P.T.
7. Check the operation of wheel slip relay in series
and parallel and found out comm.motor and
isolate the motor with the help of motor cut out
switch.
11. POWER GROUND(EXPLOSIVE) :
1. Check M/Generator any black marks
commutator and Teflon Sleeves. Clean with dry
and clean cloth.
2. While over points and crossings at high speed
reduce throttle to 4th notch.
3. Operate throttle gradually and generally work
below 8th notch, waiting on every notch for some
time before notching up.
4. Check if any power contact chatters then work
in parallel by applying P.T. switch then if
required isolate defective power contactor
M.C.O.
12. POWER GROUND(WITHOUT
EXPLOSIVE) :

1. Check T.M.Cables rubbing with underframeor


with Tr.Motor body insulate with thick dry
cloth or tape.
2. Check metal pieces or wires left in the
Reversor, BKTs power contactors etc.
3. Try by isolating T.M. 4.5.6 by M.C.O. if not
rectified isolate T.M. 1.2.3 from ACCR one by
one.

13. ENGINE HUNDTING :


1. Binding of Governor linkage, operate manually
to make them free.
2. Check for loose broken wires of ESR2 and
Engine control panel.

14. BATTERY AMMETER SHOWING


DISCHARGE :

OVERCHARGE:

16. GF CONTACTOR NOT PACKING


UP AFTER 2ND TRANSIT
ON(PARALLEL) :

1. Check AGFB. If tripped, reset.


2. Check VRP fuse, if burnt, replace with spare
fuse provided.
3. You can only work for about 2 hours in this
condition(Battery showing discharge)Advise
control.
4. Apply emergency AGFB in emergency switch
Board.
1. Cut out the Battery knife switch(in nose
compartment)and work the train to destination,
informing CONTROL(DO NOT SHUT DOWN
THE ENGINE).
1. Check interlock 6C-6Epf P32 power contactor
clean with dry clean cloth.

17. RADIATOR FAN NOT WORKING :


1. Operate emergency switch if provided at 650C
and cut out when water temperature falls below
600C. In case of WDM1 locos, put the Radiator
Fan Knob on FULL position.
2. Wedge R1 and R2 contactors o n the back panel
with a suitable wooden wedge.
18. HOT ENGINE ALARM(FALSE
INDICATION) :

BUILDING UP :

APPPLIED :

1. Hot engine alarm comes at 850C with expension


tank full of water.
2. Place throttle gradually to 2nd notch. Put GF on
OFF position and run the engine back to 8th
notch.
1. Check for tight fitment of oil filling plug.
2. Check for fitment of the dipstick gauge properly
to avoid it drawing air.
3. Keep on checking expressor, oil level and Cyl.
heads for over heating. Work the loco back to
shed, advising PCNL.
1. Close the cut out of Air Governor (Provided)
near the Air Governor in expressor
compartment and keep the drain cocks MRJ
slightly open to avoid excessive pressure. Work
the train to destination and advise PCNL.
1. MU2B should be in LEAD position

(Horizontal).
2. Check both Air Brake Cylinder cut out cocks,
cocks should be in open position.
3. Tap C-2 relay valve gently.
4. Brake cylinder pressure should be 35 PSI
(2.5kg./cm2)if not adjust by SA-9 valve.
22. LOCO BRAKES NOT GETTING :
1. Check SA-9 handle in other control stand, put in
release position.
2. Tap C-2 relay air valve gently.
3. If still loco brakes are not released, close/cut
cocks and work the train to destination.
4. Check the pressure setting of brake cylinder
pressure. Pressure should not be more than
2.5 kg./cm2.
INSTRUCTIONS TO THE DRIVERS FOR TROUBLE SHOOTING OF MEP LOCOS
Cause
Engine Over Speed

Remedial Action
1. If OSTA is tripped, reset it. Crank the engine.
2. Ensure that there are no sticky racks or fuel
injection pumps.
3. Check the notch wise engine RPM

LLOB trip, Reset plunger at engine off.

1. Check the Low Lube Oil Button position on


the Woodward governor.
2. If tripped (projecting outside).
A. Press the button inside to reset.
B. Reset the Fault manually and crank the engine.
3. If LLOB is not in tripped position
A. Pull the knob outside and reset once again.
B. Check the OPS (LLOB) feed back signal level
with Number 5 Green and Yellow LEDs on Digital
Input card MDIP-16 in 11th slot. With LLOB in
normal position, both LEDs are OFF. With LLOB
in tripped position, both LEDs are ON.

Hot Engine. Cant Power Up.

1. Check water level in display/ gauge


2. Before this message, message comes as
Engine temperature is high, reduce power
3. Put GF in Off observing Load & Road
& allow the engine to cool till temperature is
reduced below 90C.

Power Circuit Ground Fault.

If the fault is recurring:

Control Circuit Ground Fault.

Loco over Speeding & not moving in


motoring

Loco not responding to throttle, GF


contactor not picking

Put throttle handle on idle, GF switch off put


TM isolation toggle switch in off & isolate
Traction motors one by one for rectification. If
no success 1. Apply Loco brakes and ensure locomotive
brakes are physically applied.
2. Set the display mode to Mixed through
Display Menu setup.
3. Set the locomotive operation to motoring
mode and notch to 1.
4. Observe the traction alternator leakage
current sensor (TANGI) on the display.
1. If CGR is open circuited, open seal of
GRCO2 and put it off, now start cranking of
engine. After successful start of engine, provide
GRCO2 in place.
1. Put throttle handle on Idle.
2. Let the speed of loco come within set
limit
3. Do braking by A-9 if required,
4. Maintain the locomotive set speed.
1. Check wire terminal from MEPP-660 to GF
contactor coil.
2. Check operation of GF contactor
3. Check GF contactor coil
4. Check operation of GFCOs
5. Set the Display to Manual Tests for
Outputs mode through Test Mode Menu and
satisfy the initial conditions required to run
manual test as prompted on the display unit.
6. Press 13 + Enter Key+1 to energize GF
contactor.
7. If GF contactor energizes, then
A. Check up for proper closing of main contact
tips and Auxiliary contacts.
B. The status of GF Aux. Contact 1 can be
checked through 0 number Green and Yellow
LEDs on digital input card MDIP-16 in slot 11.
C. The status of GF Aux. Contact 2 can be
checked through 1 numbered Green and
Yellow LEDs on Digital Input card MDIP-16
in slot No. 12.
D. All the 4 LEDs should glow.
8. Press 0 key to deenegize the GF contactor.

A. All the 4 LEDs in both the digital input


cards should be OFF

Engine is not Cranking due to Cranking


contactor
stuck up

Motoring prohibited, Dynamic


prohibited due to
cranking contactor closed

This message will be logged during cranking


only.
1. Open the battery knife switch.
2. Manually operate and check free operation of
CKC contactor and all the three cranking
contactors. Ensure there is no mechanical
obstruction to operate.
3. Ensure that both Green and Yellow LEDs 0,
1 and 2 on the digital input card MDIP-16 in
slot 10 are glowing.
4. If all the three LEDs are glowing:
A. Manually open the Auxiliary contacts of
CK1, CK2 and CK3.
B. Corresponding Green and Yellow LED
should go off.
5. Close Battery knife switch and prepare loco
for cranking.
6. Press start button
7. CKC contactor should pick up
1. Shut down the engine.
2. Open battery knife switch
3. Check the status of CK1/CK2/CK3
feedback LEDs on the MDIP-16 card in
slot 10 and green LEDs numbered 0,1,2.
4. Whichever the LED is not glowing,
corresponding cranking contactor is
welded or interlock is bad.
5. LED 0 for CK1, LED 1 for CK2 and LED
2 for CK3. on MDIP16 card in slot 10.
6. Check for any weld condition of the
contactors. Release the main tips with a
wooden stick & clean it.
7. After the tips are separated, alarm bell
stops & the reset message is displayed
Cranking contactor stuck closed FAULT
RECOVERED
8. Now close Battery knife switch

PROCEDURE FOR CRANKING THE ENGINE FITTED WITH


MCBG GOVERNOR
1. Switch ON the Battery and Control circuit breakers as required normally.
2. When the circuit breakers are ON, the Display of the Control Unit shows the following
message.
Power ON self check SUCCESSFUL immediately message changes to Press START
Button to Crank Engine.
3. After the above message, press START button to crank the Engine. When START button
is pressed, while cranking the following messages are displayed in the display unit.
Setting up fuel Rack for Cranking immediately message changes to Ready for
Cranking Engine.
If Cranking fails due to any reason then display shows the message Cranking not
done.
Please wait till the following message is displayed. Press START Button to
Crank Engine.
Press once again START button to re-crank the engine.
For any reason if engine is not starting (firing), Press fuel rack linkage manually, while engine is
rotating.
4. Once the Engine is cranked, displayed shows the following Engine parameters:
LOP
NOTCH

ENGINE
SPEED

FOP

BAP

FUEL
RACK

LCP

5. When any fault occurs Buzzer in the control Unit starts beeping.
a) For normal faults: Normally, when the faults are recovered, the fault message are
cleared from the screen and the buzzer stops by itself.
b) For other faults: These faults require attention of the Driver. Hence where ever the
fault message is not cleared on its own, Please press ACKNOWLEDGE button on
the control unit, to clear the message and stop beeping of buzzer.
6. If the Engine is shutdown due to any fault, please press ACKNOWLEDGE button on the
control unit, to clear the message and stop beeping of buzzer.
7. Even after pressing ACKNOWLEDGE button and the fault message is cleared, still if it is
not possible to crank the Engine then switch OFF Battery and control Circuit Breakers.
Switch ON them again after few seconds and re-crank.
8. LOW BAP BYPASS SWITCH INSTRUCTIONS.
In case BAP is not buildup in Loco (i.e. either BAP on the display is less then the BAP
displayed on Loco gauge or BAP is less on both the display and Loco Gauge), operate
bap Bypass toggle switch to Bypass mode provided on the in Governor control unit

front panel. Write a clear remarks in the repair book for which the BAP Bypass switch
is kept in By pass mode.
Note:-Locomotive runs normally even if the display is blank or parameters are not updating.
