Hills Garrison Fourth Graders Get Glimpse of History at NH Statehouse

This past week, the fourth grade students of Hills
Garrison, hopped on the big yellow bus and traveled to
visit the NH Statehouse in Concord.
The yearly trek has been taken as an added learning tool
to teach the students about government.
The NH Statehouse outing not only affords the students
lessons rich in American history, but the good fortune of
having Hudson resident and Speaker of the House, Shawn
Jasper, as their personal historian and educator at the
statehouse.
During their visit, Speaker Jasper met with the students
in the House of Representative to answer questions. He
also welcomed two students to the speakers lectern as a
birthday gift to them.
NH state representatives, Russ Ober, Lynne Ober and
Jordan Ulery, were also available and answered questions
during the tour.
The NH towns of Concord, Hopkinton, and Salisbury
competed for the honor of hosting the states capital.
In the end, the decision was made to have the capital
constructed in Concord.
In 1819, at a cost of $82,000 and constructed from

Flutist Heather Hardy, salutatorian of Alvirnes Class of 2013,
performed perfectly at her junior recital at New York University this
past Saturday. Accompanied by Barbara Lee on piano, Heather
played pieces by Hindemith, Bach and Faure. The seven selections
she played are in partial fulfillment of requirements for her degree
for a Bachelor of Science in music education.
While on her way to a third year on the Deans List, Heather
is also teaching as an intern at the Filomen M. DAgostino Music
School at Lighthouse Guild where she works with children ages
kindergarten through 12th grade. She had to perform her recital

The Hudson School Department, at its Dec. 7 school board meeting,
unanimously approved raising the pay for substitute teachers from $60 to
$70 per day.
According to a survey completed by the School Administrative Unit,
the Hudson School District was paying the least amount for substitute
teachers. The survey also illustrated that Oyster River and Lebanon, N.H.,
paid $80 per day and that many towns were paying $75 per day.
During the meeting, Superintendent Bryan Lane stated that Hudson was
struggling getting substitute teachers for some time and that the union
had several times attempted to have the pay increased.
The school board members chose $70 as this amount was in the
middle of the wage ranges within the survey.
In addition, substitute teachers who are certified will have their pay
increased from the present $70 to $80 per day.
Lane also commented that the problem getting substitute nurses is
even greater than the substitute teacher issue. Licensed nurse pay will be
increased to $125 per day.
Funding for these wage increases will be off-set by not having to pay
teachers the $20 per period coverage, which is ongoing now. Teachers
who cover for periods that do not have a substitute receive $20 per
period, or up to $120 per day should they cover six periods.

The musicians were required to demonstrate their ability
to play the musical scales, perform an excerpt from Brad
Ciechomskis newly commissioned work, as well as
prepare a recording of a specific piece of music when trying
out for the honors band.
I am really looking forward to spending all day working
with really talented musicians, commented HMS student,
Jack Gasdia. Fellow student Sophia Gavas stated, I am
really thankful for all the help Mr. Seckla (music teacher)
gave us. He spent many hours teaching us the music and
then making sure we had a good recording.

Remember Hudson When ...

The Sanders-Smith House on Derry Street

This fine Victorian home was built by Hudson native George O.
Sanders between 1873 and 1875. He was born in 1850 and at the
age of 17 began an apprenticeship with his father, Abi Sanders, a
respected carpenter and contractor in this area. This young man
designed and built his own house; as such the dwelling represents
the exuberance of youth and is an example of New Hampshires
finest French Empire style of the Victorian Period.
The main house is a two-and-a-half story dwelling on a granite
foundation and covered by a Mansard roof with strongly flaring
eaves. Today the exterior walls are sheathed with grey
aluminum siding, applied over the original rusticated wood
exterior. This work was done in the 1970s by Leonard Smith
who worked diligently to retain as much of the original detail
as possible. The front corner, facing Derry Street, has an
elaborate three-story tower capped with wrought iron railings
and canopy terminated with scroll work and a weather vane
bearing the letter S.
The L-shaped one-story wing extending from the main
house originally had a hayloft door for access to the stable.
This has been modified over the years. Above this hayloft
door was a dormer, and on the roof stood a tall shingled spire
rising from a cupola. The cupola remains today, but the spire
has been replaced by a hipped roof.
The lot on which the house stands has been enclosed by
several varieties of fencing over the years. When the house
was first built, it was supplied by water from a deep well
which was pumped up by a tall windmill in the front yard.
Later, probably by 1893, when Mr. Sanders became principal
stockholder of Hudson Water Works, the well and windmill
were replaced by town water mains. The tower and weather
vane over the main entry, the hayloft door and shingled spire
on the wing, the windmill, and fencing can be seen in the
1887 photo of the George O. Sanders house.
The life of George O. Sanders is also of interest. He was
an accomplished builder by his early 20s. He left Hudson
in 1878 to work as an engineer in Kansas, returning four
years later to begin a business which would grow to become
NHs largest wooden box factory, employing nearly 190
men in three separate mills. In later years he also engaged in a

number of civic interests. This included establishing, surveying, and
construction of the Hudson Water Works Company: the construction
of the multi-unit housing block and a row of single-family houses
around what is now Library Park and the initiation of the Nashua
Street Railway Company.
In its 142 years, this fine Victorian has had just three owners. In
1904 Harry Kendrick, an employee for Sanders, acquired this home.
It was owned by the Kendricks until purchased from Mrs. Kendrick
in 1943 by Leonard Smith. From 1943 to the present, the home

Establishes In-School Videotaping

The Hudson School Board, in an effort to comply with New
Hampshire House Bill 507, has created and approved a policy to
allow video or audio recording within school district classrooms.
NH HB 507 states, This bill adds provisions relating to the
protection of teacher personally identifiable data and a provision
governing the recording of a classroom.
No school shall record in any way a school classroom for any
purpose without school board approval after a public hearing,
and without written consent of the teacher and the parent or legal
guardian of each affected student.
According to the newly established Hudson policy, The Hudson
School District recognizes that the use of video or audio recording
can be an activity that enhances the instructional and assessment
process within the classroom. The district also recognizes that
ensuring the privacy rights of our students and staff is something that
needs to be considered at all times.
Further stated by the SAU: The Hudson School District will
create a procedure to gain the permission of students and staff to use
video and audio recordings within the classroom. Parents, staff, and
students of the age of maturity will be given the opportunity to agree
or not to agree for video or audio taping. That permission or lack of
permission will stay in place during the students enrollment within
the Hudson School District, unless a change is requested by the
parent or staff member.
The new policy concludes with Any video or audio recording
in the classroom will not be distributed or broadcast outside of the
school building without an added permission from the parent or staff
member.
The SAU defines the classroom as any physical space within or
outside of the school in which instruction takes place.
The following events and areas are exempt from the new policy:

club events, competitions for CTSO (Career and Technical
Organizations) organizations, school assemblies for spirit or
yearbook activities, award ceremonies, and hallways and general
areas where video is used for security reasons.

May the Joy of the Season Emerge

Is it the lack of snow or the busy fall season
that causes us to find ourselves unexpectedly
one week away from Christmas? Sure, we have
gotten prepared to some extent, but if you want
to know, I could use a extra few weeks. This
year, and, yes, I know I am old and maybe extra
grumpy, it almost seems that all the national
news is focused on the terrorist issues and the
mass shootings, and I guess the presidential
campaigning cannot make us happy with the
current state of our nation. Seems like everything
needs to be changed; nothing done for the past
seven years is right or correct. Sorry, got carried
away.
Back to the real message - a happy holiday
wish to our advertisers and readers whose loyalty
allows our team to bring you a paper to your
home since 2000.
As we prepare to be away from our readers until
Dec. 31, the post office wants to get the paper
in your hands on Thursday and not on Saturday,

Task Force Addresses Heroin/Opioid

Epidemic by Endorsing Legislation

On Dec. 15, the Division I subcommittee of the
Joint Task Force for the response to the heroin and
opioid epidemic recommended two key pieces
of legislation to the full task force. The first piece
would remove the preauthorization requirement
and standardize the high level of treatment
provided by insurance companies for substance
abuse treatment and the second would expand
drug and alcohol education in schools.
Removing the insurers prior authorization
requirement for substance use disorder outpatient
services provides individuals who seek emergency
treatment with the ability to obtain care without
delay. In addition, this legislation would require
insurance providers to standardize the criteria for
rendering substance abuse care and provide a
high level of care that is consistent regardless of

task force chair.
Throughout the task forces meetings, weve
heard consistent and compelling testimony that
there are often small windows of opportunity
when addicts seek medical care or treatment and
these barriers can discourage them from seeking

Tired of Misrepresentation
This letter is in response to the column written on
Dec. 4 by Jordan Ulery. In the column he described
the process that the Syrian Refugees that are settling in
Canada are going through. Canada has implemented
a well-managed process. I have no doubts that any
plan that is made for accepting Syrian refugees into the
United States would be as well thought out.
What I take exception with is Mr. Ulerys statement
that Donald Trump is being vilified for proposing the
exact same plan that Canada implements. What? If
Mr. Ulery has not come to this realization yet, let me
summarize D. Trumps position on Syrian immigrants.
Trump does not want to allow Syrian immigrants in this
country at all. In fact, his latest proposal of not letting
Muslims into this country, even if they are citizens, is not
only disgraceful but it is unconstitutional. He wants
to create a database of not just the Syrian Muslims who
immigrate to the country, but rather all Muslims in this
country! I for one am a little tired of hearing that the
media or the Democrats or the Republicans are taking
aim at Trump and misrepresenting his intentions. His
position on Muslims is quite clear, and it reflects very
poorly on a nation that was founded on freedom of
religion.

Santa Claus Arrives Early

for our Heroes
Twelve packages of gifts for Litchfield heroes were
sorted, packaged, mailed or will be delivered to their
homes before Christmas.
It was a difficult time in getting addresses for them.
But it gave us a good feeling to help them. They are
giving more to us and our country then we could ever
give them.
Michelle Ninteau, Elizabeth Robinson and I spent
last Tuesday with the packaging of their gifts.
These are some of the things that were included:
white socks, work gloves, white hankies, toiletry
supplies, joke books, hand warmers, hand puzzles, beef
jerky, hard candy and bars, cookies, instant pop corn,
cocoa, coffee, tea, soups and fruit, hand and foot cream,
bubble gum, nuts, pens, pencils and note books.
Cards and notes were included in each box. Some of
these were done by students with pictures at the library.

On Dec. 9, Legislation was introduced which
is expected to soon become law to permanently
extend the Internet Tax Freedom Act without
proposals to impose taxes on internet sales.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) has been a
strong proponent in the Senate of extending ITFA
permanently, without the threat of an internet
sales tax to New Hampshire businesses. For
years, supporters in Congress of an internet sales
tax have tried to add this legislation to ITFA.
For years, the Internet Tax Freedom Act has
kept the internet free of new taxes and has helped
it flourish into the driver of economic growth
and job creation that it is today, said Shaheen.

The right to life without fear should be more
important than the 2nd Amendment rights to own
firearms. Since most gun owners are responsible and
law-abiding, they should have no fears of laws that
require background checks and registration for any gun
sales. The proliferation of firearms in this country is
costing us a huge toll in human lives and also billions
of dollars in tax money. The cost to the tax payer for
extra police preparation, response, legal procedures
and incarceration is enormous. The cost of medical
attention to victims adds to the price tag. If we could
see this as an item on our tax bill, we would probably
be shocked.
There have been many shootings, both through
domestic violence and violence against our public
servants in law enforcement, military, healthcare,
education, and even some shootings for political
reasons. We have many children and adults mourning
the loss of loved ones and suffering with PTSD due to
shootings in schools, neighborhoods, movie theaters,
and shopping centers, among other places. This is really
quite unnecessary and could be avoided with rational
firearm safety laws. This would not stop all shootings,
but it would cut down on gun violence.
When the second amendment was written, George
Washington and James Madison did not want a
strong central government nor a standing army. They
wanted local militias to fight for the protection of the
people. Times are much different now, and I feel it is
irresponsible for politicians and others to say that we
need guns to protect us from the government. This
seems to say that citizens should take up arms against
the government if they are dissatisfied.
I think its time for congress to fund the Center for
Disease Control to study the effects of guns in this
country as well as ways to curb gun violence, through
logical gun safety laws and providing treatment for
mental health. Then we could come to sensible
consensus on how to make our country safer.

internet sales tax legislation that would harm New
Hampshire businesses from ever becoming law.

Although New Hampshire does not have a sales
tax, proposed internet sales tax legislation would
force New Hampshire businesses to collect sales
taxes for 46 states and 9,600 taxing jurisdictions
across the country. ITFA was made a part of the
Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of
2015 which strengthens enforcement of trade
laws. This legislation is expected to be passed by
Congress and signed by the president before the
end of the year.

Jaime Ruth Morency

Our dear little girl,
Jaime Ruth Morency,
passed away Dec. 9,
2015, at the Southern
NH Medical Center, with
her loving family at her
side, after a courageous
four year battle with
cancer. She was a loving,
kind, caring person who
selflessly gave to many
different charities in the
area. She was deeply loved by her family, friends
and coworkers and will be sadly missed by all,
especially the emotionally challenged community,
whom she both worked with, and championed.
Born March 9, 1984, to Gale (Lamb) and Daniel
Morency she was raised in Tyngsborough, Mass.,
and Hudson. She was a 2002 graduate of Alvirne
High School and a 2008 graduate at Southern New
Hampshire University.
She was employed in many different capacities
in the special Education field, most recently at the
Jewett School in Manchester.
She is survived by parents Gale and Danny
Marcus Wendell Harmon
Morency of Hudson; grandmother, Fran Morency

of Salem; brother, Troy Morency and he wife Kirra
of Goffstown; sister, Janet McCarthy of Concord;
aunts, Cheryl Lamb Wolfson and her husband
Daniel of Lyndeborough, and Beverly Williams
and her husband Dick of Fiskdale, Mass., and
her uncle, William T. Lamb and his wife Susan of
Lowell, Mass. She is also survived by many Lamb,
Wolfson, Beaulieu, Dupras, Hastings, Stokes and
Cappiello cousins as well as friends to numerous
to count, many who stood by her through her long
painful illness.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a

Ferry St., Hudson, NH 03051 to help defray the
enormous medical bills incurred by the family
during her long struggle.
Friends were invited to call at the DumontSullivan Funeral Home, 50 Ferry St. in Hudson on
Dec. 14, followed by a Service of Remembrance in
the funeral home. Burial was private.
An angel here on earth, her wings were ready,
but our hearts were not.

Marcus Wendell
Harmon, 31, died Dec.
5, 2015, as the result of
a car accident. He was
born Jan. 24, 1984, to
Wendell B. and Doris M.
Harmon in Nashua.
He graduated from
Nashua High School in
2002 and Keene State
College in 2007. He
played basketball his
entire life and was part of the 2001-2002 Nashua
High School State Championship Team. He was
employed by C&S Wholesale Grocers and Lab N
Lager, both in Keene.
He was an outdoor enthusiast who loved
life. His interests and skills ran the gamut from
camping, hiking, snowboarding, swimming,
baseball, basketball and softball, to bowling and
billiards.
Marcus spent the last decade in Keene where
he was able to spread love, joy, excitement and
care to many. His smile and hugs were infectious,

something that would change any mood or
emotion into something warm and comforting.
He was able to light up a room with an oh hey.
Those of us who knew Marcus will remember how
amazing he was with everyone, from the young
kids he helped while refereeing sports, to the
friends he supported through thick and thin, the
family he was always there for or just being the guy
in the room that you were able to connect with.
He is survived by his parents, his brother and
sister-in-law, John T. and Karina M. Harmon and
his sister and brother-in-law, Crystle J. (Harmon)
and Robert J. Peters, and numerous aunts, uncles,
cousins, nephews, and a niece.
Marcus you will be forever missed and always in
our hearts.
Visiting hours for all family, friends and
colleagues was on Dec. 15 in the Dumont-Sullivan
Funeral Home, 50 Ferry St. in Hudson.

79, lifelong resident of
Litchfield, died at his home
surrounded by his family
after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Litchfield
on Nov. 7, 1936, a son
of the late Fred and Ena
(Denton) McQuesten. He
was the husband of Janet M.
(Griffin) McQuesten, whom
he married on Aug. 26, 1978.
Fred was educated in Litchfield.
Disabled since 1983, he had worked in the
construction trade as a union laborer. He held
membership in Local 668 Union Laborers of North

As years progressed, these large machines have been reengineered with design, function, and materials. Not only do robots
do dirty and dangerous jobs, robots even perform bomb-sniffing
duties for the U.S. military, and they also accomplish the mundane
tasks of vacuuming a home or business.
In order to function properly, a robot must know (very much like
a human) the environment in which it is working. While a human
may see, robots have infrared sensors and cameras. While humans
may hear, robots have piezoelectric sensors and microphones.
While humans may touch, the robot might have a bump sensor
installed to alert the robot of a structural change within the
environment.
Ignelzi explained that making a robot requires the work of many
different skill sets. Software engineers, mechanical engineers,
electrical engineers, civil engineers, systems engineers as well as
manufacturing engineers are necessary to successfully build a robot.

Singers Shine at the Annual Alvirne Holiday Concert

At the end of the evening, a mix of singers from the different
choral groups came together to harmonize in combined efforts to
sing Angels in Seven to conclude the evening.
I loved the variety in the music and how it featured a lot of
different students, said Alvirne Music Department Director Gerry
Bastien. I also loved bringing the three choral groups together at
the end. You got to feel good leaving here.

In that Great Getting Up Mornin. Their
featured soloists included Margaret Raposa,
Mason Masotta, Kiersten Hosch, Casey
Williams, Stephen Sanger, and Roman Jarvis.

Alvirne High Schools Music Department
didnt disappoint the crowd packed into the C.J.
Steckevicz Gymnasium for the annual Alvirne
Holiday Concert on Dec. 9. The audience
was treated to the full ensemble of the upand-coming homegrown musical talents of the
Alvirne Singers, Treble Choir, Nothin But Treble,
and Select Chorus B Naturals. Many of the
songs featured gospel-style renditions and a few
festive and easily recognizable holiday pieces.
First-year choral teacher Michael Gallagan
directed the concert. It was awesome! It was
fun to see everything come to fruition. I think
all their hard work that they put in showed, said
Gallagan.
Alvirnes choral groups have been excited
about having Gallagn lead their singing efforts.
It was so much fun. Having a new choral
director puts a new spin on things, and I like
the way he did it, said Madison McClellan, a
member of the Alvirne Singers.
The crowd also had positive comments about
the evening.

combined symphonic, jazz and concert bands

The Alvirne High School Music Department, under the direction
of District Coordinator and Director of Bands Gerry Bastien, treated
an audience of music lovers to an evening filled with holiday
instrumental music that started the season off on the right note.
The concert band performed All Glory Told by Swearingen
and a medley of Christmas crowd-pleasing songs like Frosty the

Snowman, Santa Claus is Coming to Town Here Comes Santa
Claus and more.
Some in the audience were sitting with eyes closed and swaying
to the woodwind choir and the symphonic band, just getting into the
music that filled the C.J. Steckevicz gymnasium.
The jazz band stole the show with renditions of Stompin At
the Savoy, The Little Drummer Boy, a patriotic America the
Beautiful and for an encore Mud Bug Strut.
Drummer Nick Rossetti, saxophonists Bradley Garcia and Nolan
Grzegorzewski and Maggie Woolsey on the tuba, as well as all the
musicians, were surprisingly masterful for high school talent.
Bastien, conducting his 19th holiday concert, was saddened to say
that European travel had been called off.
We had plans to go to Europe with the jazz band and that had to
be canceled, but unfortunately we are at the mercy of world affairs,
Bastien said.
He said that one of the opportunities that will be missed by not
traveling will be for the band to meet and be with other musicians
from other countries.
Travel makes the world smaller and they meet other kids. Ive

been doing this a long time, and let me tell you, it doesnt matter if
youre in Hudson, New Hampshire, or Munich, Germany, kids are
kids. Especially kids that are involved in music, Bastien said.
Bastien said that he encourages everyone to take music as it helps
with character and builds community.
After any tragic event in the world, whats the first thing that
happens: music. It brings people together. It could be a concert; it
could be a festival, whatever. Its music. When Paris was recently
bombed what did people do? They went back to the concert hall
and they went out. The arts was driving everything, Bastien said.
Bastien said that he is, blessed and fortunate to have these kinds
of kids; they really are great kids, it really makes it so much fun.

Christmas carols help set the mood for the holiday season. Such
songs are played in stores to create festive atmospheres for shoppers, and many families play seasonal music as they decorate their
homes for the holidays.
Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago during
Winter Solstice celebrations. When Christian holidays replaced
many of the pagan celebrations, Christian holiday carols replaced

Although carols and other songs are still popular forms of entertainment at school concerts and some religious group events, the
classic tradition of carolers going door-to-door has largely fallen by
the wayside. But those who want to bring back this once beloved
tradition can take the following steps to do just that.
Find a caroling group leader. It helps to have someone who
has a sense of musicality and pitch to lead the caroling. Carols
are usually sung a capella, so youll need a strong singer to guide
others and keep them in tune. Recruit a theater or music student or
even a member of your church choir. Fill out the rest of the carolers
with volunteers who have moderate to strong singing abilities. Of
course, you can accept anyone, as its more about sharing the joy
rather than having a pitch-perfect group.
Choose a neighborhood to visit. Select an established neighborhood where there are likely to be many families and even
seniors who will be most receptive to carolers. Place fliers in the
mailboxes alerting residents of your caroling plans for those who
want to be home to enjoy the free show.
Promote your plans if you want a larger crowd. If you want
to make the caroling a big event, promote your plans in the local
newspaper or in a community bulletin. This way everyone in the
community can take in the caroling show.
Choose a handful of well-known songs to sing. Your audience will appreciate easily recognizable songs they can sing
along with if they choose.
Print lyric sheets. Although the lyrics to popular songs are
widely known, it helps to have them handy if carolers forget
verses. Keep extra copies on hand in case others want to join the
caroling group.
Get a sponsor. If you live in a rural area and caroling door-todoor is impractical, see if a local retailer will let you carol outside
of his or her store or business. Doing so can set the holiday mood
and may generate free advertising and increased business for

Turnovers Hurt Campbell down the Stretch against Pelham

A week before this matchup between the
Campbell girls basketball team and Pelham,
Campbell showed some glaring weaknesses. On
both sides of the court they just couldnt find the
inspiration and drive to give their all and compete
with Pelhams roster. In the end, Campbell would
get blown out, but it would be the driving factor
for what would be a redemption game against
Pelham. Campbell couldnt quite pull away from
Pelham toward the backend of the second half,
but the heart and hustle that was displayed on the
court made up for any misgivings in the previous
matchup.
Campbell kept it tight in the first half, trailing
by only seven going into the third quarter against
a Pelham lineup that is a nightmare on a bad
day. They struggled to finish their free throws, but
whats important is that they had opportunities to
take them. They slashed to the basket and forced
Pelhams defenders to foul or else give up easy
layups. The outside game helped them out as
multiple players made their three point attempts,
forcing the defense to move away from the basket
and allow Campbells low-post scorers to have
some extra space to flip up hook shots or layups.
Emma Rousseau (#30) and Jaelyn Lavigne (#24)
both showed off their basketball intelligence by
making quick decisions and sticking close to their
marks on defense. Avery Lacroix (#5) got in on
the action as well by pressuring and switching
with Jessica Manning (#21) on rotations to prevent
any easy shots.

discourage the work that they did up
to that point. The hustle and heart
that these girls displayed for those
three quarters were enough to leave
an impression and for Pelham to
whip out the secret weapon that they
were saving for later in the season.
Campbell played Pelham better than
any Pelham opponent has been
able to all season and, although it
will end up as another game in the
loss column for Campbell, there is
no question that this was a game of
growth for Campbell.
Losing is never easy, but to play
a team as talented as Pelham for as
long as they did on grit and grind
alone shows a potential within these
athletes that wasnt necessarily clear
at the beginning of the season. As
the season goes on fans should see
these girls play themselves into
basketball shape on a mental level.
They have the tools to win games;
now its just a matter of putting all
the pieces together and gelling as
a team going into the heart of the
season.

The snow is coming, but maybe this year
wont bring the mountains of snow that came
last year.
However, along with all the challenges that
last years significant snow brought, everyone
should focus on the shared responsibilities
required when pedestrians take to the streets
when walking or riding their bikes.
In speaking with Lt. Dave Bianchi, Hudson
Police, he said, Last year was horrible. The
snow banks were very high and vehicles had to
exit their driveways with extreme care.
When riding a bike, always remember to
ride with the traffic and obey all the laws of
a motor vehicle urged Bianchi. If there is a
stop sign - stop. If the light is red - stop. If your
bike is motorized you are to travel with traffic
and must obey all the rules of the road.
He continued to state, and make sure that
the reflectors on the bike reflect and that you
wear your bike helmet.
When speaking about pedestrians, Lt. Bianchi
also suggests that if a pedestrian should walk in
the street, that the person should walk facing
traffic.
Both pedestrians and bike rides need to be
visibly dressed so that drivers can easily see
when someone is in the road, stated Bianchi.
Unfortunately, people forget that if they wear
black or a dark color at night, and walk or
ride their bike in the road, the visibility is very
difficult for a driver to see them. If possible,
walkers should wear reflective or clothing that
is white, yellow, or a bright color.
Homeowners, if possible, should attempt to
break down the snow piles at the end of their
driveways in an effort to see oncoming traffic.
While we recognize the tremendous difficulties
during last year, many motorists entered harms
way as a result of not breaking down their
driveway embankments when they could.
Lt. Bianchi stated that while driver inattention
and distraction are the two leading causes
of accidents, both motorists and pedestrians
need to respect the needs of each other when
walking or riding on Hudson roads. Paying
close attention while driving will decrease the
possibility of any accidents.
With that respect, everyone will get home

Hudson Youth Compete

in National Junior Olympic
Cross Country Championships
made them individually eligible for the Nationals.
The team placed fourth.
The team practiced hard the final weeks leading
up to the Nationals. They had to prepare their
bodies for the higher elevation in Albuquerque,
N.M., of 5,000 feet above sea level. The boys
were encouraged to
drink 100 percent
of their body weight
in water daily, eat
nutritiously excluding
sugars, and getting
proper rest nightly.
Finally, the big day!
On Saturday, Dec. 12,
at 11:30 a.m., Paul and
Keegan, along with
the other three team
members, began a race
that was harder than
any they had ever run.
They were competing,
not only against 312
other 11- and 12-yearold boys, but against
altitude, weather, and their own bodies. The
course was 3,000m of open field, golf course
sand pits, and hills. Yet, they finished the race
triumphantly with Paul coming in at 42nd and
Keegan at 67th. The team placed 15th.
Congratulations to these two Hudson boys on
their amazing finish.

As many families are preparing for the holidays
with shopping, baking and parties, there are
other families in Hudson returning from the
USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country
Championships.
Paul Balletto and
Keegan Murphy are
two of the many racers
to have run with the
11- and 12-year-old
boys PAL team, which
is the Nashua Police
Association League.
Keegan has been
competing with PAL
for several years, and
this was Pauls first
year.
The team practiced
five days a week for
one and a half hours
at Nashua South.
Practices began late
October and were coached by Karen Long, the
cross country coach at Elm Street Middle School.
To become eligible for Nationals, the team
placed in the association meet, and then went on
to the Regionals. Both meets were held in Rhode
Island. At Regionals, Paul and Keegan, along with
two other team mates, placed in the top 30 which

Athletes Rank High in the Nation

This past Saturday, Dec. 12, more
than 3,000 youth athletes traveled to
Albuquerque, N.M., for the 2015 USATF
National Junior Olympic Cross Country
Championships. Athletes competed at
Balloon Fiesta Park, home to the annual
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta,
the worlds largest hot air balloon festival.
Campbell High Schools Jeffrey Allen
(freshman) and Caitlyn Callinan (sophomore)
were two of the 3,000 competitors. In the
13-14 boy age group, Jeffrey earned the title
of All American and is now ranked 22nd in
the nation. After a hard-fought competition
among the 15- to 16-year-old females,
Caitlyn now ranks 36th in the nation.
