Donate blood and give hospital patients hope this holiday season
On the fourth annual Day of
Donations blood drive at Southridge
Mall, the American Red Cross encourages area residents to continue to give
something that means something this
holiday season give a lifesaving
blood donation.
Day of Donations Blood Drive
Monday, Dec. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. Southridge Mall 5300 S. 76th
Street,
GreendaleSponsored
by
Trending Radio 93.3, FM 102/1 and
Milwaukees True Oldies Channel 100.3
FM and 1290 AM
This blood drive comes at an
important time of the year for the Red
Cross, said Michelle Otero, district
manager for the Red Cross BadgerHawkeye Blood Services Region. It
will help boost the blood supply during
the holidays, when we typically see a
decline in donations. Each pint of
blood thats donated could help save
up to three lives. The only cost is about
an hour of your time, but to a hospital
patient in need, time is everything.
All presenting donors will receive a
swag bag that includes a $20 gift card

toward an oil change at any Fast Track

Oil Change Center; a $5 gift card to the
Original Pancake House; a Cedar Crest
Ice Cream coupon toward the purchase
of a pint of ice cream; one free movie
pass for Marcus Theatres (restrictions
apply); two 7-day VIP passes for you
and a guest at any Xperience Fitness
location; and a pair of Stern & Bow
tickets to a 2015-2016 Milwaukee
Admiral game, while supplies last. All
presenting donors will also be entered
into a grand-prize drawing for an
overnight stay at Blue Harbor Resort
with four water park passes, as well as
a four-pack of Milwaukee Bucks tickets
and a four-pack of Monster Jam tickets.
Additional support provided by Crest
Cadillac, Dunham Transmissions, Glass
Shower Door and Kaplan University.
A blood donation is a gift that
doesnt cost a thing but can provide
hope to patients in need. Every day,
the Red Cross must collect about
14,000 pints of blood to meet the
needs of patients at 2,600 hospitals
and transfusion centers across the
country, including more than 40 in the

Badger-Hawkeye Region. The need for

blood remains constant during the holidays, however, busier schedules, travel
and seasonal illness often leave little
time to donate. All blood types are
needed to ensure an adequate blood
supply heading into 2016, and those
with types O negative, A negative and
B negative are especially encouraged to
give.
How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red
Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All
blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor
card or drivers license or two other
forms of identification are required at
check-in. Individuals who are 17 years
of age (16 with parental consent in
some states), weigh at least 110
pounds and are in generally good
health may be eligible to donate blood.
High school students and other donors
18 years of age and younger also have

to meet certain height and weight

requirements.
Blood donors can now save time at
their next donation by using RapidPass
to complete their pre-donation reading
and health history questionnaire
online, on the day of their donation,
prior to arriving at the blood drive. To
get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow
the instructions on the site.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on your

website and they look amazing! My problem is that I
have had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt
and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to please
help me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out to
chew. Can you fix this dentists dentures so I dont have
to pay for another set! Please help me, as I cant live this
way.
Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You did
not mention if this was an immediate set of dentures
given to you the day your other teeth were removed or
simply a replacement for older dentures. There is an art
to making dentures and even with tremendous care and
skill; denture fabrication is a process that requires
patience. As people live with dentures they experience
continued bone loss. There is so much bone loss that
dentures begin to move and may actually slide during
chewing even with using denture adhesives. When teeth
are removed you actually lose up to 40% of the
remaining bone width in the first year after teeth are
removed and you can continue to lose 40-60% of the
remaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!
The solution is to save teeth if possible and if not
practical to place mini-implants or traditional implants to
preserve the bone.
Implants preserve bone! That means that over time
dentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.
I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fitting
dentures usually require that they be made again from
scratch. It is just too easy to change someones denture
and then feel that the changes that were made could have
made your situation worse! So most dentists will want to
start over with new impressions, brand new teeth and
mountings to try and remedy the problems you have
experienced. Trying to make your dentures fit may
actually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of
money, which would be wasted if your dentures could
not be made to be comfortable.
In rare situations, I will work with someones old
dentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores or
simply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

Teach kids financial lessons for the new year

At the dawn of a new year, many
adults resolve to make positive changes
in the year ahead. But New Year's resolutions aren't exclusive to adults. In
fact, New Year's resolutions provide a
great opportunity for parents to teach
their kids about setting goals and maintaining the discipline necessary to realize those goals.
Many adults express a desire to save
more money when making their New
Year's resolutions. Parents who want to
instill financial responsibility in their
children and encourage youngsters to
save money right alongside mom and
dad can do so in various ways.
Start giving kids an allowance in
return for doing their chores. A great
way to teach kids about money management is to give them an allowance in
return for doing their weekly chores.
This teaches kids that they must earn
their money and also teaches them to
budget. Resist the temptation to give
kids extra money or advances on their
allowances, as doing so can compromise
the lesson that kids need to budget.
Encourage kids to establish specific financial goals. Kids can benefit just
like adults by setting specific financial
goals. If kids have their eye on a new
gadget or gaming console, encourage

them to create a savings log that tracks

how much they're saving each week and
how close they are getting to reaching
their goal. As kids's balances increase
and they get closer to their goal, they
may grow just as excited as adults do
when they see their investments perform well.
Match kids' contributions. Another
great way to encourage kids to save
money is to match the deposits they
make into their accounts. Whether it's
teenagers saving for their first car or
younger kids saving for a new bike, kids
may be more likely to save if they know
their contributions are being matched.
Parents can explain that matching is
not just for kids, as many moms and
dads benefit from employers who match
their retirement contributions.
Let kids make mistakes. Everyone
makes mistakes, especially when it
comes to money. Many adults feel the
best financial lessons they learned were
a byproduct of a mistake they made
that forced them to reexamine their
approach to money. Letting kids make
financial mistakes now may help them
avoid bigger and more costly mistakes
down the road.
Teach impulse control. Another
valuable financial lesson parents can

instill in their kids is controlling their

impulses with regard to spending. Many
adults exercise impulse control by waiting 24 hours to make purchases. In this
scenario, adults who see something
they like online or in-store that they
did not intend to buy will wait a day
after seeing the item before deciding
whether or not to purchase it. That 24hour waiting period often prevents people from buying products they don't
need. Kids can benefit just as much

from following this guideline. In the

interim between seeing the item and
deciding whether or not to buy it, discuss with kids the pros and cons of buying the item. This can teach them to
carefully consider each of their purchases, making them more responsible
consumers for the rest of their lives.
New Year's resolution season provides a great opportunity for parents to
impart valuable financial lessons to
their children.

Illness and Disability Have No Age

Jenny was diagnosed with a debilitating
"Conversion Disorder" affecting her speech
and nervous system, mimicking MS &
Parkinson. Jenny thought she needed cleaning
help, but realized she needed a company that
offered much more to remain independent.
Dawn keeps Jenny positive which keeps her
symptoms dormant. They cut coupons, clean
and cook meals, sort mail, decorate for
holidays and mostly laugh a lot over life's
challenges.
Jenny says: "she is more comfortable when
her home is clean and organized. It gives her
a sense of comfort and happiness".
On a shelf sits a Precious Moments Christian
soldier, a gift from Caregiver Dawn that says
"Life hands you challenges yet together you
push on." Dawns reminder to Jenny is that no
matter what age we are, we could always use
a helping hand.

Loss of mobility, health changes or loss of

independence can lead to sadness, loneliness
and depression.

BBB Top Ten Scams of 2015: Tax Scam is #1

When Better Business Bureau
launched BBB Scam Tracker earlier this
year, it was expected that tax scams
would be high on the list. What was
surprising was how high; more than the
next three categories put together. In
the first 10,000 scam reports processed
by BBB, a whopping 24% were about
imposters pretending to be either the
Internal Revenue Service (2,363
reports) or the Canadian Revenue
Agency (50 reports). The rest of the top
ten were all some form of imposter
scam: debt collection scam, sweepstakes scam, tech support scam, government grant scam, etc. About 85% of
those reporting scams to BBB recognized them as frauds before any money
was stolen, but the Top Ten Scams still
account for more than $1 million dollars
lost from those who filed with BBB.
Scammers are all basically
imposters, notes Mary E. Power, president and CEO of the Council of Better
Business Bureaus, the umbrella organization for 113 local, independent BBBs
across the United States, Canada and
Mexico. Three of the top four scams
reported to us are those that scare people with threats of arrest, law suits or
other frightening actions. Scammers are
pretending to be government agents,
lawyers, debt collectors, police officers.
They engage directly with you, so your
best bet to avoid being scammed is to
stop engaging. Hang up the phone,
delete the email, shut the door.
How the Scams Work:
1. Tax Scam: You receive a phone
call from someone who claims to be
with the IRS (U.S.) or CRA (Canada).
They claim you owe money in back
taxes and will be arrested or face legal
consequences if you do not pay (usually by wire or prepaid debit card). The
caller ID is spoofed to appear to be a
government agency or the police.
2. Debt Collection Scam: You receive
a phone call from someone claiming
that you have an unpaid debt. You are
threatened with garnishments, law-

suits, even jail time if you dont pay

right now. The scammer will often use
caller ID spoofing and pretend to be a
government agency or law enforcement
in order to further invoke fear.
3. Sweepstakes/Prizes/Gifts Scam:
You receive a call, letter, or email claiming youve won a prize in a sweepstakes.
In order to receive the prize, you are
instructed to send a fee to cover
expenses associated with delivery, processing, or insurance. The prize is not
real; you should never have to pay
money to claim a prize you have won.
4. Tech Support Scam: You are contacted by technicians claiming to
have detected a virus or security threat
on your computer and, for a fee, can
log-in and correct the problem remotely. These callers are actually hackers
trying to steal money or sensitive computer passwords and/or damage computers with malicious software.
5. Government Grant Scam: You
receive a phone call, email, or letter
informing you that youve qualified for
a government grant. In order to receive
the grant, however, you are instructed
to send money as a processing or delivery fee, usually by wire transfer or prepaid debit card.
6. Advance Fee Loan Scam: While
searching for loan information, you see
an enticing ad and click through to the
website. You fill out an application and
soon receive an email or phone call
advising that you are approved for the
loan, but you must first send a processing fee, security deposit or insurance.
You pay the fee, but never see the
loan.
7. Credit Card Scam: The scammer
pretends to be from your bank or credit card issuer, and they claim that you
are now eligible for a lower interest
rate, or that they need to verify a
recent transaction. The consumer provides the scammer with their credit card
number and security code to verify
their identity.
8. Work from Home Scam: While
looking for a job online, you answer an

ad for making big bucks while working

from home. The job may be stuffing
envelopes, posting advertisements, or
shipping packages. You could have your
identity stolen when you fill out the
employment forms, or even end up handling stolen merchandise.
9. Fake Check/Money Order Scam:
This can happen any time someone is
paying you for goods or services (even
when you are selling something online).
You receive a check in the mail that is
larger than the amount owed, and you
are asked to deposit the check and wire
the difference. The check is a fake and
when it bounces, youre out the money.
10. Lottery scam: You receive a call,
letter, or email advising that you have
won a large amount of money in a foreign lottery, but you have to pay
upfront for taxes and fees. Such lotteries are illegal. Sometimes you may be
sent a check as partial payment, but
the check will be counterfeit.
Why Scams Work:
There is a science to scams, and it
may surprise you to know that scammers use many of the same techniques
as legitimate sales professionals. The
difference, of course, is that their
product is illegal and could cost you a
fortune. Here are the major techniques
they use to draw you in:
Establishing a connection: The
scammer builds rapport and a relationship with you. This is usually used faceto-face, as in home improvement scams
and many investment scams, but also
online romance scams.
Source credibility: Scammer use
techniques to make themselves look
legitimate, such as fake websites, social
media posts, or hacked emails that
come from a friends account. Most
email phishing scams spoof real companies, and many scammers pretend to be
a trusted business or government
agency in order to add credibility.
Playing on emotions: Scammers rely
on emotion to get you to make a quick
decision before you have time to think

about it. An emergency situation or a

limited time offer is usually their
methodology. They count on emotional
rather than rational decision-making.
What You Can Do:
Dont be pressured into making
fast decisions.
Never provide your personal information (address, date-of-birth, banking
information, ID numbers) to people you
do not know.
Dont click on links from unsolicited email or text messages.
If you are unsure about a call or
email that claims to be from your bank,
utility company, etc., call the business
directly using the number on your bill
or credit card.
Never send money by wire transfer
or prepaid debit card to someone you
dont know or havent met in person.
Never send money for an emergency situation unless you can verify
the emergency.

Bronzeville Week celebration now set for August 6-13

Milwaukee will celebrate the culture,
history, art, commerce and community
rooted in a rich urban tradition from
August 6-13, 2016, when the 4th annual Bronzeville Week is held in
Milwaukee, hosted by Alderwoman
Milele A. Coggs andFriends of
Bronzeville.
Bronzeville Week, a formal City of
Milwaukee-sanctioned event and celebration, was approved today by a unanimous vote of the full Common Council.

During August 2015, the 3rd annual

Bronzeville Week showcased the vibrant
culture within the original district, and
Alderwoman Coggs said the celebration
will again fill the Bronzeville district
with music and culture next summer.
Bronzeville Week provides attendees with an opportunity to learn about
the rich history of this district and celebrate the culture, arts, music and commerce for which Bronzeville is historically known. The event also unites resi-

dents and brings opportunities and economic activity to the area, and it is a
valuable asset to the 6th Aldermanic
District and to our city.
Reaching from Garfield Avenue to
Center Street, Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr., Drive to 7th Street, the Bronzeville
Cultural and Entertainment District is
wholly located in the 6th Aldermanic
District.
The Bronzeville Cultural and
Entertainment District is a City of

Milwaukee redevelopment initiative

inspired by Milwaukees original
Bronzeville, and it is striving to revitalize the area of Milwaukee where
African-American culture has been a
mainstay.
The
Bronzeville
Redevelopment Plan seeks to create
economic development in a predominantly African-American neighborhood
while recapturing the enthusiasm and
vibrance of the original Bronzeville
District.
