ASSIGNMENT-3

FORCED VIBRATIONS

1.

A machine of mass 1000kg rest on four springs each having stiffness of 3.5x10 6
N/m. The damping factor of the dashpot is 0.2. The machine runs at 2000 rpm.
Under these operating conditions, the machine is found to deflect by 0.06mm.
Find the magnification factor and force transmitted through each mounting.

2.

A single cylinder engine has a mass of 100kg and is acted upon by a vertical
unbalanced force of 400 sin (13 t) N acting on it. The cylinder is supported on a
spring having a stiffness 60 kN/m and a damper which gives a damping force of
700 N per unit velocity. Find the force transmitted to the foundation.

3.

A machine of 100 kg mass supported on spring of total stiffness 700 kN/m and
has an unbalanced rotating element, which results in a disturbing force of 300 N
at a speed of 2500 rpm. Assuming a damping factor of 0.25, determine:
a) Amplitude of vibration
b) Transmissibility
c) Transmitted force

A vertical single stage compressor has mass of 500 kg mounted on spring having
stiffness of 1.96x105 N/m, and a dashpot having damping factor of 0.2. The
rotating part are completely balanced and the equivalent reciprocating parts
weight 2kg. The stroke of the compressor in 0.2m. Find the dynamic amplitude of
vertical motion and the phase difference between the motion and the excitation
force, if the operating speed is 200 rpm?

A machine of mass 1000kg is acted upon by and external force of 2450N at 1500
rpm. To reduce the effect of vibration, isolators of rubber having static deflection
of 2mm under machine weight and an estimated damping factor of 0.2 are used.
Determine.
a) Amplitude of vibration of machine b) Force transmitted to the foundation
c) Phase lag d) Phase angle between transmitted and excited force
e) Speed at which the maximum amplitude of vibration would occur.

6. An electric motor weights 25kg and is mounted on a rubber pad which defects by
1mm due to motor weight. The rotor weight 5 kg and has an eccentricity of 0.1mm
and rotates at 1500 rpm. Find the amplitude of vibration of the motor and the
transmitted to the foundation under the following conditions (i)there is no damping
(ii) Damping factor = 0.1
7. When a single cylinder engine of total mass 300kg is placed four springs, the springs
are compressed by 2mm. A dashpot offering 400 N of damping force at relative
velocity of 200 mm/sec is attached to the engine to damp out the vibrations. The
reciprocating mass of the engine is 20kg and stroke of the piston is 130 mm. The

engine is running at 1500 rpm. Find out amplitude of vibrations neglecting secondary
unbalance.
8. A machine which runes at constant speed of 1440rpm weight 153 kg. The machine is
supported on isolators having a damping factor of 0.2. The machine has net rotating
balance of 1.1 kN-mm. Estimate the value of stiffness of the isolator, if the
transmitted force is to be less than 8% of the unbalanced force
9. A machine weight 100kg is supported on 4 springs. It has 80mm stroke and at runs at
1000rpm. If the springs are symmetrically placed with respect to C.G. of the machine,
find neglecting damping, the combine stiffness of the springs in order that the force
transmitted to the foundation is 1.25 times the impressed force.
It is found that the damping, however small reduce the amplitude of successive
vibrations by 25%. Under this condition, find.
a) Force transmitted of foundation at 1000 rpm
b) Force transmitted to foundation at resonance
c) The amplitude of vibration at resonance, if weight of the reciprocating parts is
2kg.
10. A machine part of mass 4kg vibrates in a viscous fluid. Find the damping coefficient
when a harmonic exciting force 50N results in resonant amplitude of 250 mm with a
period of 0.4 sec. if the excitation frequency is 2 Hz, find the percentage increases in
the amplitude of force vibration when the damper is removed.
11. A refrigerator weighting 30kg is to be supported by three springs, each having
stiffness of K (N/m). If the unit operates at 580 rpm, find K, if only 10% of the
shaking force is to be transmitted to the supporting structure. Neglect damping.
12. A mass of 25kg is supported by a spring and dashpot. The spring is stretched by
150mm due to weight and the dashpot has coefficient of damping of 1000N per meter
per second. If the support is oscillating in SHM, with amplitude 25mm and frequency
6 red/s, find:
a) The amplitude of load
b) The relative amplitude between load and support
c) The amplitude of the load when the frequency of disturbing force is equal to the
natural frequency.
d) The amplitude of the load when the dashpot has been grounded and the frequency
of the support is (i) 6 red/s; (ii) equal to natural frequency of the load.
13. An instrument panel of an aircraft are mounted on isolators. If the isolator has very
little damping and it defects 3mm under a weight of 23 kg, find the percentage of
motion transmitted to the instrument board of the vibration of the aircraft is at
2000rpm.
14. A centrifugal fan weight 46kg and has a rotating unbalanced of 0.24kg-m. When
dampers having a damping factors of 0.2 are used, specify the spring stiffness for

mounting such that only 10% of the unbalanced force is transmitted to the floor. Also
determine the magnitude of the transmitted force. The fan runs at constant speed of
1000rpm.
15. The spring of an automobile trailer is compressed by 0.1m under its own weight of
500kg. find the critical sped, when the trailer is traveling over a road with a profile
approximated by a sine wave of amplitude of 0.08m and wave length of 14m. What
would be the amplitude if the trailer was to move at 60 km/hr. also find the variations
of force in the springs.
16. A vehicle has mass of 1200kg. The suspension system has a spring constant of kN/m
and damping ratio of 0.5. If the vehicle speed is 100 km/hr, determine the
displacement amplitude of the vehicle. The road surface varies sinusoidally with
amplitude of 0.05m and a wavelength of 6m.
17. A motor car moving with speed of 100kmph has a gross mass of 1500kg. It passes
over a rough rod which has a sinusoidal surface with amplitude of 75mm and a
wavelength of 5m. The suspension system has a spring constant of 500 N/mm and
damping ratio of 0.5. Determine the displacement amplitude of the car and the time
lag.
18 Vehicle with a rider has a total mass of 400 kg and travels along a rod at a speed of 90
km/hr. The road can be idolized as a sinusoidal surface having amplitude of 0.03m
and a wavelength of 5m. Determine:
a) The spring stiffness so that resonance occurs under the conditions specified, and
b) The required spring stiffness so that steady state amplitude of 5mm is obtained at at
the given speed and also if the rider would leave his seat under this conditions.
Neglect the effect of damping
19. A vehicle has a mass of 500 kg and the spring constant of its suspension system is
19600 N/m. The profit of the road may be approximated as a sine wave of amplitude
10mm and a wavelength of 1.5m. Determent:
a) The critical speed of the vehicle
b) Amplitude of steady state motion of the mass:
(i) when driven at critical speed and neglecting damping
(ii) when driven at critical speed and having damping factors of 0.5
c) Amplitude of motion of the mss the vehicle is driven at 50 km/hr and damping
factor is 0.4
20.

Find the mass m to be placed at the end of the reeds of a Frahm tachometer, in
order that the reed is in resonance at 1800 cycles/minutes. The reed is 50 long,
6mm wide and 0.75mm thick. Assume modulus of elasticity as 19.6x1010 N/m2
