WORD OF ADVICE FOR FEs

9/29/2015 8:46:28 PM

Research
Dr. Ramesh Vasappanavara
Principal, RAIT College

Why

your mind to the work you do which is the most

important. Every student may not be able to
get into an IIT, but everyone can work towards
their hearts content, in an area of their choice
and complete their masters. Sometimes its more
important what you do instead of where you do
it from. If its not IIT it wont matter if you do it
perfectly.

Research is the study of what is existing and

it solves all the problems that mankind faces.

With research, we serve mankind. Anyone who
is undertaking research with dedication and with
full effort is serving humanity. I was attracted
to the way of life. I started looking for a better
way for doing things, and since Electronics,
Computer Science and Information Technology
were my areas of interest, I decided to channel
my interests further and step up in research. It
was the way I live, the way that I did my duty,
which attracted me towards research. Research is
not a diversion from what they are doing in their
graduate course, for e.g. what a person does in his
engineering course is similar to what he will do
when he is into research. As long as you inspire
people, have an interest in your field of interest,
have an innovative mind, you can be successful
in the area where you choose to do your research.

you are doing what you want to do instead of

what others want you to do. You are getting paid
for what you like the most. You must do a job
that you like, rather than a job that people think
you should be in. That, in my opinion, is more
important.

seldom question Why is this? Like many of

us have studied what a Zener diode is or what
avalanche breakdown means, but we never
try to analyze the significance of Zener diode
or avalanche breakdown in real life. We never
think about it. It is this kind of probing mind or
problem solving mindset which a researcher must
have. Research is more than just getting a PHD
degree. Its more about how you perceive things
around you, how you seek answers to questions.
Did Einstein get a PhD degree for what he did? It
is his probing mind that made him a researcher.
So first develop a probing mind, the remaining
will follow. You should question the WHY behind
everything instead of the WHAT. Everyone
knows WHAT a function diagram is but WHY is
knowing the logic behind that function diagram.
So you should have an inquisitive mind. 4x4=16,
we allknow, but why that is so, very few of us know.
You have to develop that inquisitive mindset.

Career Avenues
PhD means doctorate of philosophy.

A
person who can solve problems is a philosopher.
A philosopher of a particular field means that
you have the most advanced knowledge of that
field, may it be of interest to industry, equipment,
labor or technology. When you have a PhD, it
means you are able to dictate the philosophy
in that field. That means you are the best judge
regarding the dos and donts. There will be many
people around you who will seek your advice
because you are a knowledgeable person. There
are innumerable companies which take PhD
holders as team players, mentors or specialists to
give guidelines and help out in policy building.
Several of them would be the leaders of working
groups as advisors or as lab heads. They will be
connoisseurs to people who implement ideas.
That is where original innovation and thinking
power is useful. A lot of industries require the
help of a PhD holder as they seek people who
have the right mindset to solve problems. Many
of them become teachers and professors to share
their knowledge and mentor the next generation.

Basic Salary
and Subsequent
Growth

Salary is a basic need, with or without PhD.

Productive
change in the
world

Importance of IITs
and NITs
IIT and NIT are apex institutes, and since

In applied research, our actions have a beneficial

effect on society, and we can affect many lives by

the work we do. When you are a researcher you
are expected to solve problems. It is important
that the problem is universal. By doing that, you
contribute to society & help people as a whole
rather than individuals. Due to the internet and
social media, it has become easier to identify
problems, solve them and contribute to society in
a positive way. Whatever the field that you may
choose to do your research in, it would have a
beneficial effect on society as a whole.

the competition is high for going into these kinds

of institutes, they are in demand. The students
that get into these institutes are also of a higher
intelligence level. Students from IITs or NITs are
at an advantage as they are enrolling into the most
prestigious institutes in India, which also has a
very good environment for Research. But even if
you fail to get into them, its not a problem. Its
your problems solving skills and how you apply

1
booklet ieee.indd 4-5

Who should do it
We generally question What is this? but

Salary package for a researcher is on par with what

is available at industry level. The satisfaction of
doing research is more attractive than the salary
package. When you are working in the senior most
level in industry, salary becomes immaterial.
For e.g., would you like to work as a person who
plucks the grass from a horticulture or would you
like to be an architect who designs the plant? Its
your ambition that matters. If your stomach is
full, then will you be looking at a bowl of rice to
eat? No, you will be looking for something more
than that. In my opinion, money shouldnt be
the basic criteria for a researcher. You may draw
lesser money than other people, but you have the
freedom to dictate terms as to what work you do.
In industry you have to work according to a set
pattern, but in research you can choose your area
of operation and excel in it. Being a researcher

The Syllabus

IES is an extensive and comprehensive study of

:
Ameet Jagtap, IES Aspirant
The IES has been initiated to fill the technical and managerial
functions of Government of India. It is the most prestigious and the
highest governmental post that an engineer can hold. IES officers
hold the top most technical positions in governmental institutions
like the railways, ordinance, electric supply, power generation,
irrigation, armed forces as well as all major government companies
like BSNL, BHEL etc.

years based on reservations. So if you start at

21 years old, open category students will get 9
attempts. Total 1200 marks is divided as follows:
200 marks aptitude test paper (General Studies,
Paper I), 400 marks objective type questions
papers (Paper II & III), 400 marks subjective-type
questions papers (Paper IV & V), Total 1000 marks
in written tests. 200 marks are for the interview
round.
The aptitude test paper is common for all,
whereas the other papers depend on your subject
of specialization. There is a minimum and
separate passing for each subject, to be eligible
for interview round. Final cutoff after interviews
is about 50-60%. The general vacancy each year
may vary from 300-500, depending upon which
field you belong to.

Why

We often look at the rot in the governmental

sector, the political system and wonder what kind

of change we can bring about being engineers. IES
is the answer. You need not become a politician
to bring about change in society, you can do that
being an engineer and that too being in your own
field. It is one of the best platform from which you
can really bring about change. National policy
building, passing contracts for big projects,
managing government institutions are all jobs of
IES officers. They are the executives of India. If you
become an IES officer, you can make some actual
changes in India, instead of just campaigning or
creating awareness.
No amount of money or perks can give you the kind
of status and respect in society that an IES officer
has. The self-satisfaction that one experiences
in serving his nation cant be bought by money.
Money is nothing in front of power and honor
that a civil servant earns during the course of his
career.

ESE

The Pattern

(Engineering Services Exam) is the

competence exam held by the UPSC every June,
from which IES officers are selected. The minimum
age for attempting this exam is 21 and maximum
age 30. The upper limit is slightly relaxed by 3-5

Those who clear theIES Examinationare eligible

engineering. You are supposed to know absolutely

everything about your field. Your knowledge base
has to be good and you must know your course
in its entirety. Even those concepts that you may
not have learnt in four years of engineering
are included in the portion. GATE and IES
preparation is similar, except that the portion for
IES is much more advanced than GATE. Basic
difference between GATE and IES is that GATE is
more objective whereas IES is a mixture of both,
objective as well as subjective. In IES written exam,
each and every step carries marks. So the basic
necessity is to have a complete knowledge of that
subject. Each concept must be clear and you must
be able to show that on the paper. Compared to
GATE, IES objective questions are easier. Since a
calculator is not allowed for IES exams, numerical
questions are not generally asked. IES paper is
largely theory based.

for employment in the different departments

which are under the Government of India related
to engineering. The selected candidate is placed
as Assistant Executive Engineer in different
organizations at the time of recruitment and only
after three to four years of service will they be
promoted to the post of the Executive Engineer
which is equivalent to Under Secretary to
Government of India. On a later stage, once you
have served for 20 years, you will be promoted
to the post of Chief Engineer level-1. Engineers
having professional experience of 32 years will be
posted as Secretary to the Government of India.

Basic Salary and Perks

Starting salary for an IES officer ranges from 2.5

lakhs to 4.2 lakhs PA. In time with promotions

and years in service, that amount will grow to
20.5 lakhs to 22.5 lakhs PA. It depends on factors
like organization, posting, equation with seniors,
field that you are in etc. The perks of being an IES
is what attracts many students to it. Perks include
impressive accommodation provided by the
government, household help and security guards,
official vehicles, free electricity, high level of job
security, option for taking study leave abroad,
lifetime pension and other retirement benefits.
But the biggest perk of being an IES Officer is the
respect and honor that comes with it.

HOW to prepare

If you are planning for IES, you should study really

hard right from your first year of engineering.

The syllabus of IES is such that questions might
range from any Indian University. A knowledge
of the pan-India syllabus of your course is a must.
Extensive study of each and every textbook, each
reference book is important. If you have studied
honestly and regularly for 4 years in engineering,
about 70% of your studies would be done by the
time you start preparing for IES. Those having
practical knowledge are at an advantage as their
concepts are clear and they have more application
based knowledge of that subject. IES being an
unknown course to many, students get bogged
down by the sheer size of the syllabus as it is nearly
40% more than what you study in 4 years. Time
management is also very important both while
studying as well as paper solving. Students need
to be sufficiently motivated and patient regarding
the exams and the papers. You have to make sure
that you attempt the maximum out of all the time
you have.

Other Govt. Exams for

Engineers

Those

with an interest in government

administration can give the UPSC, MPSC
exams to become an IAS, IPS or IFS Officer. The
Combined Defense Services Examination (CDSE)
is for those who seek a career in Defense.Public
Sector Units (PSU) entrance is for jobs in Public
Sector companies.

Remember, it is a competitive world out

there. Marketing kicks in much later, so you
can directly address your potential and target
audience and get going. Each start-up has its own
share of hurdles. But the more hurdles you get, the
stronger you become in the long run and the more
enlightened you become about the world you are
stepping into. The lack of dedication and the lack
of sheer driving force might pull you down. You
must be 100% dedicated to the cause.

There isnt much room for anything else.

I have known people who have opted for a
job initially to make sure they are financially
independent and strong before venturing into
entrepreneurship. This approach would only
delay the establishment of your business and you
would waste valuable amount of time. Get started
as soon as you have the right idea and dedication.
Thats the best way to proceed, according to me. In
the initial years, you are not just gaining work
experience; you are gaining people experience
as well. The effort you show rubs onto the people
around you. Recognising the talent of people and
valuing them helps in building a trustworthy
environment which is necessary in any workplace.
Make sure you have enough acumen to show your
employees that you are capable of great things.
Growth is slow. Theres no other way to put this.
It might be years before you hit gold, years before
something actually happens. Dont give up. Go on.
See, the early stages of your engineering journey
dont only teach you basic concepts of the field
you chose to graduate in. They teach you how to
be patient, how to be quick in thought and action,
how to take shrewd decisions. It makes you a
worldly person. You just need to keep at it and
wait. Success will come when it is due.

Where to begin and

how to proceed

Gain the support of your parents. Be the pilot

Mr. Rajesh Bhatwal,
CEO, Nitiraj Engineers Pvt. Ltd.

Why

the fact thatyour product needs to be sucked in

the market and not pushed. You need to see the
basic needs, resources and the area of interest
of your target audience and work towards that.
Researching for your product is of utmost
importance. Your product must fulfill a void that
may be present in industry.
You need to have strong will power to be a successful
entrepreneur. Your aim must not be to just set up
your enterprise, it must be to make it big. The
sky is the limit for any business venture and your
sight must be set on the sky, and never look down.
You also need to have the determination to be an
entrepreneur rather than an employee. The key to
all this is self confidence and every entrepreneur
must have that in abundance.
Lastly, if you believe that your product is different
from the rest, get some honest reviews before
going any further. Face criticism. Don't lose
your confidence. Dont hesitate to approach your
parents. Parental support acts like some kind
of tonic that gives you strength while taking big
leaps.

I have always been an admirer of those who follow

their dreams and do their own thing instead of

slaving in a gloomy office and doing mundane
work. I grew up seeing my father, who was also an
entrepreneur, living life on his own rules and that
inspired me to initiate my own venture. I learned
what the word entrepreneur meant looking up
to him. Even before entering college, I knew what
my calling in life was and hence I worked towards
it.
Being the GS of RAIT College, I learnt the
basic nuances of how an enterprise (in this case
SUC) worked. We had the responsibility to start
everything from scratch and we worked hard
towards it. I concentrated on learning all about
people management, event organization right in
college. I also learnt to come up with solutions to
problems even under adverse conditions and fight
back against all odds.
With time, people and zeal, I mixed all my areas of
interest and came up with Nitiraj Engineers Pvt.
Ltd. With a passionate group of just three people,
we set it up, got it on wheels and got it heard and
seen.

Factors to be
considered

The preparation
required

Do not resist change! Weathers always change and

so should you. In your journey toward becoming

an entrepreneur, dedication and determination
are the only qualities that would lead you to
success.

In my opinion, if you are looking forward to

establishing a start-up, you need to confront

5
booklet ieee.indd 8-9

and fly your jet with no Plan B. Dont think too

much about what didn't work. It's useless and
leads to only misery. Think about whatworked.
The most important point while beginning is to
decide the field. Clearance regarding the field
that you are going to enter and the path that you
are going to take is important. That requires a lot
of self analysis. You must be sure regarding the
decisions you make and stand by them. Market
survey is also very important. You must take
expert opinion about your business venture from
friends and family. Conducting a professional
statistical analysis would also help. Once you
select your venture, 90% of the work is done.
Important piece of advice: Acceptance is the key
to success. As students, we all have our strengths
and weaknesses. It's only natural. But we struggle
to accept our weaknesses. A laser beam focus is
always needed that would gravitate you to your
core plan.

Mr. Rajesh Bhatwal is an RAIT Alumni and

the founder of Nitiraj Engineers Pvt. Ltd. It is
one of the leading manufacturers of Electronic
Weighing Scales & Systems in India. He has
received The Best Entrepreneur Award by The
Govt. of Maharashtra in 1992.

Productive Change in
World
I believe that we have lot of obligations to

Monetary benefits and

subsequent growth
If you wish to start an enterprise, dont expect

the society in which we live. By starting your

own enterprise, you create employment. Your
enterprise would thus give a life-line to hundreds
of people. On a technical level, you can assist in
Research and Development in your field. You can
provide an impetus to industry by innovations
that may go a long way in helping our generation.
You can contribute in improving the economics
of your country and at the same time bring
improvement in the quality of living of people.

money to flow in soon. Its the harsh reality. No one

will invest in your start-up until you put things
on the table, show them an idea that is unique and
that can be expanded upon. For a considerable
amount of time, there will be no money and a great
deal of work. Get ready to face it. If money is what
drives you, then this environment is definitely
not for you. In a start-up environment, you need
passion, dedication and perseverance. Thats it.

Career Avenues

Why

After post-graduation, students are encouraged

My interest throughout engineering had been

to extend their course to a PhD. Students can

also pursue a teaching job as most of them wish
to continue their research work. With a Masters
degree, you can do a lot of things because you
have the flexibility to choose the courses that you
like. For example, many students who have an IT
degree can take up a management job, because the
system here is that flexible. You can also get a job
as a business analyst. You can take up technical
jobs if you are interested in the technical aspect
of things. Another thing students tend to do is
a co-op. They extend their internship of three to
six months to a year. This is called a co-op and is
authorized by the university. Once the students
understand how a firm works, they come back
and complete their Masters degree and then go
back to work for the same firm. So there are a lot
of options for you to discover and venture into.

Information Security & Privacy. Thats why I

pursued IT engineering at RAIT. Even after
graduating, I was sure about getting a Masters
degree. Indian Universities dont provide any
kind of specialization in Information Security &
Privacy. This was the main reason why I wanted to
pursue further studies abroad.
A number of foreign universities provide many
specializations that Indian Universities dont
provide. The higher salary and other perks are
also one of the other reasons for pursuing Postgraduation from a foreign university.

The Advantage

A lot of students try to follow the trend and go

abroad, without thinking about why they want

to study abroad. When you compare foreign
universities to Indian universities, the major
difference that you can make out is flexibility.
For example, in foreign universities, you can take
whichever courses you want. Along with your PG
course, you may study for your research interests,
even do a couple of courses from business schools.
Here you have the flexibility to study both. So you
dont feel like you are missing out on something
when you are getting your degree. Other than that,
the Universities here motivate the students and
provide them with opportunities to get experience
in the industry through a number of internships.
There are career centers in universities that bring
in companies to recruit students for internships.
These internships help figure out a proper path
for a student in the future. Here, individual
development is of utmost importance, and hence
you evolve as a person and excel in your field.

Preparation

The key factor in this process is planning and

networking. You have to be sure what you want

to do. You need to decide once and with finality if
you wish to study in a foreign university. You need
to have a focus or an area of interest. Once you
decide that, start preparing for GRE and TOEFL
after your 5th semester. Preparing for these exams
takes time, although its not tough to crack these
exams. For the universities here, GRE or TOEFL
marks dont matter as much as the aggregate GPA
in college or your extra-curricular activities. Once
you are really sure, you need to start talking to
people who are actually studying there and start
networking with them.
When you talk to a person who is doing your
favored course in that particular university, you

7
booklet ieee.indd 10-11

as full time employees and ask them to work on

IBM products. Not only IBM products, but also
on improvising other products to come up with a
better deliverable. These are good options after a
Masters degree at an industrial level.

get a much better idea of what youll have to study

when you go abroad. It helps to make an informed
decision. Take the tests in the first few months of
your final year. Once you are done with these tests,
there is a whole different application process.
You have to start working on getting your letter of
recommendations, statement of purpose, etc. This
takes more than a couple of months. The best time
to be done with the application process is in the last
week of November or the first week of December.
Universities here usually have a deadline in the
second or third week of December. They have
a rolling admission process, so the earlier you
apply, your chances of getting in are more. After
you get about four or five admits from different
universities and you finalize which university you
want to go to, you can start working on the visa
process. For the visa process, youll require some
family papers and documents from the university.
As I mentioned before, you have to be very sure on
what course you want to pursue & where you want
to study from. Because you invest a lot in this and
you are going to a new country, taking so many
risks, it should be worth it.

Productive change in
the world
A Masters degree changes the perspective of an

individual about things. While doing BE, no one

is ever sure of what they want to do, but when
you have a Masters degree, you have a better
understanding on how you can contribute to the
society. You can actually help in making things
easier for people. You can figure out how to use
the resources at your disposal, to get a better
deliverable. You have three things at your disposal,
information, technology and people. You have
the information, you are aware of the technology,
all you have to do is combine these two things to
deliver a good product that can serve people in
an efficient manner. One person cant change the
entire world, but one idea can contribute to that.
Startups are a good example of this. There is
always a reason why some startups become huge
companies and some dont. Because the ones that
become huge, have a better understanding of what
they are doing. They also know how to bring about
a change. If you pursue a Masters degree from a
foreign university, they teachyou things that you
can use to improve the existing technologies,
which can be used to serve people better.

Basic Salary and

subsequent growth

The

salary package varies according to

industries. The financial sector pays the most and
they hire people from business and information
management background. The kind of job
openings they have is of an analyst or management
oriented position. They have an average package
of almost $90,000 PA. The consultancy sector
has an average pay wage of $70,000 PA. If you
consider engineering, media entertainment
sectors, software engineering profiles usually have
a package of $75,000-$85,000 PA.
The pay also varies according to location. For e.g.
if you get a job in Texas, where the taxes and cost
of living are comparatively lower, the package
maybe less. But when you move to New York, with
the same job, then the package goes up. Thats
because the cost of living is higher in places like
New York or New Jersey.
Most of the firms here ask graduates to work with
the research and development department of the
firm. For example, IBM has a lot of research centers
that recruit students from different universities

MANAGEMENT
EDUCATION
By Bharadwaj Muthe

Bharadwaj Muthe is an alumnus of RAIT (Batch

Why

Skills required
Communication

While working at a multinational IT firm, I

realized that I needed to complement my technical

skills as an engineer with business knowledge.
The best way to do that, in my opinion, was to join
a full time course in a top business school which
would enable me to learn the basic nuances of
business management. The two primary reasons
which led me to pursue a post graduate degree in
management were
Knowledge and skills need to be backed by
relevant qualification and experience.
An increase in skillset translates into a significant
rise in remuneration accrued and responsibilities
borne.

In

The challenge that many graduates from technical

domain face is communication. If one aspires to be
a successful manager, being a good communicator
is de-facto. Communication is not restricted to
speaking and writing. It is as much about thinking,
articulating thoughts and putting them across in a
manner which is clear and concise. In addition to
this, being a team player requires good listening
skills. All the traits mentioned above need to be
practiced as they need some time to develop.

Analytical skills

Another important quality is having an analytical

mindset. Analytical skills involve understanding
a problem, and coming up with a solution backed
by evidence in the form of data. This demands a
good hold over numbers.

People Skills

Importance of Work
Experience

This is probably the most under rated dimension

of management. Given that the field involves a lot
of people interaction, possessing these skills is
imperative.

my opinion, one must have some work

experience before pursuing education in
management. This stems from the rationale that
management requires working with people. If one
hasnt worked under people, managing them while
handling other responsibilities could prove to be
a challenge. This however doesnt mean that fresh
graduates are at any disadvantage. A plethora
of business schools are quite open to candidates
having no prior work experience.

Preparation

The list given below is usually how examinations

tend to occur over an academic year. Readers

should note that the information in the table is
merely cursory and aimed at giving them a birds

CAT is usually the exam which most students prepare for, as it acts as an entrance exam for many reputed
B-Schools. Most exams test in four areas Quantitative ability, Verbal ability, Logical reasoning and
Data Interpretation but the pattern could vary across tests. Aspirants can prepare for these four basic
areas by subscribing to mock tests which several educational companies offer. Also, it is important to
thoroughly analyze results of the tests and identify weak/strong areas.
In addition to this, reading newspapers and writing summaries of editorial columns could prove to
be beneficial. This is because, while summarizing one tends to put in a lot of thought in the write-up.
Building such a thought process can prove beneficial for the next stage which is the group discussion and
personal interview. Again, the format is different across B-schools but one can design a generic template
to prepare for the same.
In my opinion, the most important part in the quest for MBA is introspection. An aspirant must be
absolutely clear about his/her purpose of pursuing the degree and what value addition can this degree
bring to the platter.

Productive Change in the

world
In my opinion bringing a change to society

is unrelated to the profession/education one

pursues. Since the question is specific to the field
of management, a manager can be involved in
various CSR activities of a company which marry
business strategy with the greater good. At the end
of the day, bringing about a change is solely upon
an individuals will.

Career Avenues

Career prospects after a degree depend a lot on

the B-School. This is because many companies

tend to hire for different and niche roles from top
business schools.
There are many fields that can open up post an MBA.
Consultancy is one attractive field, in which you
could get to tackle day to day problems. Banking
is also an attractive option, with high paying jobs
such as investment baking to offer. Marketing and
sales offers opportunities in FMCG, consumer
durables and the banking sector. One can also
work in the human resources, IT and operations
after MBA depending upon individual area of
interest.

Basic Salary and

subsequent growth

The starting package depends upon the institute

which one studies from. The average starting

package after MBA from a reputed college may
range from 12 lakhs to 15 lakhs. Subsequent
growth depends upon performance post joining the amount of effort one puts in the job, expertise
in that field, the efficiency with which targets are
achieved and other behavioral aspects.

TEACHING
Mrs. Trupti Agarkar,
Mr. Sachin Umbarkar

Why

good teacher must be able to communicate

properly. Language is not an issue, how you
interact with your students is important. You
must have the skill to express yourself honestly
and to be able to impart your knowledge in the
best possible way. The practical knowledge of
a teacher must be good. Whatever you teach on
the black board, you must be able to implement
those same things experimentally. The black
board is like a window to the world for a teacher.
Each student must get exposure to practical
knowledge as much as theoretical knowledge.
When teachers demonstrate experimentally, the
theoretical knowledge becomes more pronounced.
Conceptualization and visualization are two very
important assets that a teacher must possess.

A teacher has a direct influence on the younger

generation and hence an indirect influence on the
world. Teachers are considered as role models, and
every teacher is inspired by many great teachers
that they had in their formative years. Teaching
is a unique field where you can inspire the future
generation. The kind of influence that you have
on other people and the way you can shape their
destiny is what makes teaching a very attractive
field. Nowadays the information provided in the
books is vast, but implementing the same is very
difficult. Although your profession is engineering,
you must be able to make the students understand
the concepts better so that they can implement
that theoretical knowledge for practical purposes.
This profession gives you a platform where you
can improve yourself as well as the students whom
you can influence to become better engineers
and innovators in the future. The main aim of a
teacher is to bridge the gap between theoretical
knowledge and practical knowledge, which is the
need of today. To be a teacher is a calling of not
just the mind, but the heart as well.

Along

Advances in education and technology happen

largely due to the knowledge imparted at

educational institutes, where teachers provide
motivation and act as catalysts for innovations.
Teachers must be good at explaining the content.
They must also be patient with students along
with setting high expectations from them. A

taught. Teaching that implementation is very
important. A professor must try to make students
aware about the latest trends in their field. The
world changes every day, new technology is
introduced each and every year. We must update
our teaching pattern to include these changes. In
addition to this, a teacher can be an inspiration
behind an innovation that can transform the
world. This opportunity to reshape the world
should lead a student into the career of teaching.

with educational institutes, a teacher

can contribute to Research and Development in
collaboration with other private or governmental
institutes and implement some useful projects.
Teacher with special skills in technical fields
can arrange workshops and training sessions
which help those in need of more technological
proficiency. Due to the internet, teachers arent
just confined to a classroom. They can now help
a larger audience by posting videos and blog
posts. Prof. Shevgaokar, from IIT Bombay, has
got expertise in electromagnetic field. He initially
taught only about 60 students in a class. Now he
shares his knowledge by means of video and audio
lectures to the whole world. That helps in getting
exposure regarding that field

Skills required

and benefits a lot of students. Teachers can also

work as consultants in many multinational firms.
Nowadays, people in industries seek help from
experienced professors to solve their problems and
seek guidance. So if you are a professor in the field
of electromagnetic or electric circuits, companies
like Crompton Greaves, Siemens, seek your expert
advice for solving their problems. The outcome is
that the systems become more sophisticated and
the accuracy of systems increases. The theoretical
knowledge and experience of the professor is
important in these industries.

subsequent growth

Productive change in
the world
Experienced teachers receive salaries that are
par with industries. Apart from that, they get
Filling the gap between academics and industry is on
benefits and recognition for any research work
paramount. Nowadays the professors and teachers
teach students according to a set syllabus, which
is important from an examination point of view.
But at the same time, the focus should be to give
students a better hands-on industry experience.
What we teach is the average of a whole, instead of
what we require at an industry level. Whatever you
teach must be applicable to individuals, industry
as well as R&D. A teacher must be able to explain
the applications of every theory. For e.g. we teach
students about a transmitter system, but the basic

that they may undertake. But the important factor

for a teacher is the satisfaction from the work they
do rather than the money they earn. The teachers
work is more important for the development of
our nation and hence, the value of a teacher in
society is immense. The work of a teacher is that of
responsibility and of motivating others. Teaching
is a privilege and not a job.

WORD OF ADVICE FOR

FEs
Engineering is a privilege that only a few can get into. Hence from day one, your focus must be on

mastering all the basic nuances of an engineer. Students that enter in engineering are overconfident regarding subjects like physics, mathematics and chemistry due to their performance in HSC.
This kind of overconfidence must be kept in check and more emphasis be given to studies. Students
should not have a casual approach towards engineering.
There is a general confusion regarding the subjects and the paper pattern which must be cleared
with the help of faculty members and seniors. Students generally fail in Math and Physics because
they neglect these subjects. You should give equal importance to all subjects. First year is all about
strengthening the base. If your knowledge of mathematics or BEEE is weak, then you might suffer
in the subsequent years. Hence you should attend your lectures properly and study regularly. If you
attend lectures regularly, 50% of studies would be done.
If you study each and every day for at least half an hour, you can easily ace in any subject. Begin by
reading the textbooks regularly. You might have difficulty understanding the subject at first glance,
but in time and with regular revisions, you will develop a deep and proper knowledge of the subjects. With a systematic approach towards studies, you could get maximum marks with minimal
effort. The portion may look straightforward at first glance, but it is not so. Self-assessment is very
important. A student must understand what he is weak in. Students must utilize their holidays and
vacations for self- improvement.
Students must exercise regularly and keep their body fit. Many of my ex-students have complained
of fatigue when they join a job. Students also spend a lot of their time on the internet and social
media instead of working out or doing some physical exercise. The use of the internet must be for
educational purpose and students must refrain wasting their time on social media.
Finally, engineering is a field which requires utmost dedication. Every student must assess what he
is capable of and make an informed decision.Four years of engineering are a lesson in life to you,
so make sure that you study properly, exercise regularly and excel in your field.
