Athletics Vision

The University of Chicago Department of Athletics, Recreation and Fitness aims to enrich the life of
the whole person. We are invested in competitive excellence as we challenge our student-athletes
to develop into their best selves as athletes, teammates, students and ultimately, citizens in the
world. As athletes they embody physical strength and learn the value of movement to incorporate
healthy activity and habits into their lives.
Through sport we are committed to teaching how to work collaboratively to reach performance
goals, how to embrace diversity of thought and culture, how to persevere through failure with
resiliency, how to compete with integrity.
We strive to engage our community through fitness and recreation to encourage holistic and healthy
living, to build confidence, and to confront challenges physically and mentally.

Athletics Mission
Enhance the educational experience of students through sport and provide fitness and recreational
opportunities to all members of the UChicago community to promote and support healthy living.

Mission and Vision

Northern Michigan University challenges its students and employees to think independently and
critically, develop lifelong learning habits, acquire career skills, embrace diversity and become
productive citizens in the regional and global community.
Our Vision Statement
We believe that true excellence in education requires a commitment to equity and social justice. Thus, we strive to
prepare creative, culturally competent, critically reflective graduates who possess deep knowledge in their fields of
study and work collaboratively to achieve high quality education for all.
Our Mission Statement
Grounded in the rich traditions of the liberal arts and social sciences, and in keeping with the Ithaca College mission
statement, the Department of Education prepares students to take responsibility for citizenship and service in the

global community. This preparation takes place in several ways. The Department seeks to develop future teachers
who are not only well-educated in their disciplines, but are also culturally responsive, caring, and knowledgeable in
their interactions with students and their families. The Department also reaches out to the larger Ithaca College
student body through courses and programs designed to equip them with the necessary skills for well-informed,
critically reflective, participatory citizenship and service in their neighborhood schools and communities. In addition,
faculty and students in the Department of Education value, support, and engage in collaboration, discussion, and
dialogue with a variety of local and regional community partners in order to be of assistance in addressing
educational issues of concern and importance to them. In these ways, knowledge, competence, and service come
together in our students to nurture a lifelong commitment to the democratic quest for excellence and equity in our
schools and society.

program at both recreational and competitive levels for all children from kindergarten

positive environment.

Coaching Education
The coaching education program provides educational opportunities for all
levels of coaches, from grass roots to the elite level. The program is
comprised of three progressional levels, each of which has the following
components:

Sport Science
Extensive instruction in sport science is covered in order to provide a
scientific basis of understanding for rational development of technique
and training programs. The sport science portion has been developed
by the American Coaching Effectiveness Program (ACEP) and the
USATF National Coaching Education Committee. It includes sport
psychology, pedagogy, and sports medicine.

Technical, Event-Specific Instruction

Throws, jumps, sprints/hurdles, and endurance events are all covered
at the basic level in this school. Event-specific instruction is
progressive in nature. Consequently, at Levels 2 and 3, each event is
covered in greater depth and detail than the previous level.

Hands-on Training
Experience is the best teacher. Minimum standards of practical
experience are expected of participants at each level

Coach Development

England Athletics will deliver a programme of coaching development opportunities to support the formal
coach education pathway as well as support those coaches with more experience already working in clubs.
The aim of the programme is to ensure we have a clear coaching pathway with workshops to support
practical learning and development to help coaches. The coach development programme at both a local and
national level will continue to support individuals through mentoring, workshops, master classes, and the
flying coach programme which is a scheme also available to clubs
