About Tumkur
Tumkur (Tumakuru) is a district headquarters situated on
NH-4 (Bangalore Pune Highway) at a distance of 65 Km
from Bangalore in Karnataka state of India. In recent
years, Tumkur has emerged as an important centre for
education, industry and commerce in the state. Newly
constructed food park was inaugurated by honourable
Prime Minister of India in 2014 and city is announced as a
smart city. A range of hills rising to nearly 4000 feet
crosses it north and south. There are many historical
places around the Tumkur. Main attractions are Sree
Siddaganga Mutt, Shivagange, Kaidala Sri Channakeshava
temple, Gulur Ganesha and Devarayana Durga Hills.

About Siddaganga Institute of Technology

The Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur
was established in the year 1963 and it is one of the
premier technological institutes in the state of
Karnataka. It is run by Sree Siddaganga Education
Society (SSES), headed by His Holiness Dr. Sree Sree
Sivakumara Swamiji, a centenarian. The Institute is
autonomous and affiliated to Visvesvaraya
Technological University (VTU), Belgaum; approved by
AICTE & accredited by NBA, New Delhi. Institute offers
12 UG and 14 PG programs with 16 research centres
that are recognised by VTU. Over 150 research scholars
are presently pursuing their PhD's in these centres. SIT is
spread over 50 acres with greenery all over, and has a
sprawling playground for indoor and outdoor games.
It has 7 hostels which accommodate nearly 2200
students. SIT is a beneficiary of Technical Education
Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) Phase I and II,
a World Bank assisted Project, MHRD, New Delhi.

About the Department

The Department of Biotechnology was started in 2006
with a mission to produce self-reliant, competent
biotechnologist with ethical values. Currently, the
department is offering four years BE (Biotech.) & one
year PG Diploma (Bioinformatics & Rational Drug Design)
courses. Government of Karnataka has sanctioned
INR 10 million financial aid to run the PG Diploma and
support the industry-institute interactions. The
department has established MoUs with reputed biotech
industries, companies and institutions across India.

About the Seminar

The objective of this seminar is to bring experts of
national and international repute at a common platform
and provide a podium for exchange of scientific ideas
between experts and students. Furthermore, this
seminar will provide an opportunity to learn about
current research status of biotechnology and allied
sciences, especially in the field of nanotechnology,
genetic engineering and proteomics; wherein special
emphasis will be given on the applications and future
prospects of these research areas. In addition, this
seminar will facilitate establishment of world-wide
working collaborations for institutions across India.
