PROLOGUE
Aldous Huxley, because it is comprised of the core beliefs which are found at the centre of all religions. It
keeps popping up like a perennial flower. In these
chapters you are presented with a questionnaire. As
you work, you will always have new insights, or will
remember other beliefs or clues concerning your beliefs, programming and feelings. For this reason, it
would be very useful for you to keep a special notebook, which you will use only for this work of understanding yourself more clearly. Try to find a regular
time of the week, in which you can sit alone and think
deeply about the questions presented to you. The resulting improvement in all aspects of your life will
make, whatever you have to sacrifice to find this time,
well worth it. Give deep thought to these questions,
and answer them as sincerely as you can. You will absolutely not have the same results if you try to do all
this in your mind. If you want results, you must write,
it is the only way to real objectivity and clarity. Try to
overcome any blockages or fears about writing your
answers. You will be glad you did. Writing in the third
person is usually more effective and more objective.
Try to step outside of yourself and see your self as an
objective, impartial observer would.
The later chapters have to do with reprogramming
the mind with spiritual truths, so that they stick and
are meshed with the fabric of our daily experience. The
phrases used from chapters 11 to 25 are inspired by the
book A COURSE IN MIRACLES. But the text accompanying the phrases is based on the perennial philosophy which I mentioned earlier. It is suggested that you
perform the exercises at the end of each chapter for
about one week before going on to the next chapter.
This period of one week is relative to each person. I
would say however, that it is a good period of exercise
for most. If, on the other hand, you find a certain technique particularly useful and pleasant for you, stick
with it as long as you like, and proceed when you feel
ready. If you are one of those people, who, in spite of
all this explanation, is going to read the book continuously, without performing the exercises indicated, then
do yourself the great favour when you finish, and your
curiosity has been quenched, to start again and work
through the book a second time, now performing the
various exercises and techniques, so that you can experience the MIRACLES OF LOVE AND WISDOM in your life. Many truths and phrases are repeated frequently in the text in order to aid in the programming
process.
I would also encourage you to read my previous
books which are an important preparation for this one.
The best order for one to read these books is THE PSY-
CHAPTER I
ost people would like to live a more harmonious life, in which they give and take more
love, in which they feel a sense of inner
peace and contentment. But few are able to satisfy
these basic needs for love and peace in their lives. Most
of us live lives full of stress, conflict, worry, fear, anxiety, bitterness, and other negative and separating emotions.
The message of these chapters is that we can change
all this, if we know the keys and make the necessary effort. Here you will find the concepts and techniques
through which these changes can be made. Whether
you make the effort or not is your decision.
THE SOUL
We mentioned that the three lower bodies comprise the
personality. This personality is mortal, as we know.
(Today it is here and in some years it will not be here.)
There are however, two more subtle bodies which
survive the end of the personality after its death on the
physical plane. These are called the higher intellect and
the causal body. Together they comprise the soul,
which is the connecting link from one life to another.
When a personality dies to the earth plane, the
conscious and subconscious mental contents are
transferred to and stored in the causal body, which is a
storehouse, or soul memory-bank, where all the
experiences of the lives of that soul are stored. The
physical body returns again to the earth. The energy
body dissolves into the universal energy reserve. The
mental contents are transferred into the soul memory
body. In this way the character of this particular soul is
developing as a reaction to the sum total of all the
experiences, thoughts, words and actions which have
occurred to the soul during these thousands of years of
development, as it takes one life after another on the
earth plane for the purpose of developing and
perfecting itself. (Details of this subject are given in the
book THE MYSTICAL CIRCLE OF LIFE.)
The causal body is simply a storehouse of impressions and tendencies, which this particular soul has developed throughout its unique spiritual journey. In
each life it expresses some small portion of those ten-
THE PERSONALITY
Thus the personality is simply a projection of some
of the tendencies and characteristics which exist in the
soul. These characteristics develop in the mind,
through both hereditary factors and environmental influences, as will be discussed later. The mind then becomes the temporary storehouse on the earth level of
these various tendencies. The mind takes a certain
shape or character based on these tendencies. This
shape, or predispositions, is expressed in terms of beliefs, values, desires, habits, attitudes, emotional states,
attachments, aversions, fears, expectations and a wide
variety of mental states. All of these mental conditionings then limit and distort the shape and functioning of
the bioenergy body, predisposing us to weakness, illness and inability. This weakened and blocked condition of the energy body then reflects itself in the physical body and in our external reality of actions and
reactions. Thus our present physical reality is a function of the mental states which we experience, which in
turn are a function of tendencies and beliefs, and the
general programming, which are the result of past experiences, from past lives and from the moment of our
conception in our mothers womb until this moment.
Our present reality is a function of the past, which
we have misperceived because our vehicles of expression are not pure, not perfected yet. Thus our reality is
a function of our misperceptions and wrong conclusions of the past. How can we get free from the
bondage of the influence of the past?
spiritual freedom. It is concerned with how it can survive, as a physical and emotional entity, in this material world. All of its energy is associated with, identified
with, the physical body and the emotions. The ordinary mind is mechanically conditioned, and cannot see
itself objectively or clearly. It has no discrimination between what will bring it real lasting happiness, health,
contentment and security and that which will bring it
momentary satisfaction, but eventual suffering. Thus
the ordinary mind will choose to depend on tranquillisers, cigarettes, money, alcohol, material possessions
and various other momentary sources of relief or security, rather than to search for a source of security which
will be sure and lasting.
The higher intellect has this discrimination. In most
of us this voice of the conscience, of the inner self, is
asleep, or it is inaudible in the din of the loud voices
coming from the various desires, fears, attachments
and emotions which are fighting for control over the
mind. The voice of the higher intellect is the voice of
clarity, of discrimination between what is really good
for us, useful for our development, as opposed to what
will simply make us weaker. This higher intellect must
be developed and strengthened, so that it can perform
its function, which is to observe, analyse, correct and
eventually transcend the functioning of the ordinary
mind.
The contents of the ordinary mind, conscious and
subconscious, are now the cause of our reality. If we
want to change our reality internally and externally,
then we have to change the contents of the mind. The
instrument of this work is the higher intellect.
An example may serve as a model for the above
point. Imagine a car with a driver in front and the owner of the car in the back seat. The body of the car is the
physical body of man. The engine is the energy body.
The steering wheel is the mind. The driver is the higher
intellect. The map is the causal body and the owner, in
the back seat, who is just watching all this, is the Spirit.
In reality we are the Spirit. But our consciousness has
become so identified with the vehicles through which
it is expressing itself, that we are identifying with the
car-body, engine and steering wheel. If the steering
wheel (mind) goes where it likes because the driver
does not have control over it, then certainly we are
destined to have frequent accidents in life. If the driver
can get a hold of the wheel, then he can move through
life avoiding many of the unnecessary sufferings. Often, however in spite of that, he can not avoid some
crackups, ie. problems and difficulties in life. However
he now has the discrimination between himself and the
car.If the car suffers some damage, he will objectively
do what must be done to correct it, without suffering
so much emotional turmoil, because he mistakenly
position or character. He develops a feeling of inner security and inner completeness. He feels able to face
whatever difficulties, or tests, life may throw at him for
his spiritual development. He does not fear, nor does
he worry. He has self-confidence, self acceptance, and
abundant appetite for productivity and creative selfexpression. He is concerned not for his personal needs,
but for the needs of the whole. His energy flows freely,
he has good health and feels contentment and inner
joy. The choice is ours as to where we want to turn for
our strength and security; to the empty world of
changing forms and situations, or to the stable, unchanging inner self. But our inner self is the inner self
of all beings. Thus the process of moving towards the
inner self is a process of universalisation, in which we
ultimately become identified with all beings, in love
and union. This is not based on physical love or union,
nor on emotional-personal love, but rather on a spiritual feeling of oneness, beyond the differences of the personalities and appearances. Thus the personality becomes universalised and feels comfortable and safe in
all situations, because all are part of his family, even
the animals and plants.

him. He asked, What are you doing, crying and running away like a weak and fearful sheep, when you are
a great and powerful lion? The sheep- lion cowered in
fear and answered, What are you saying? Dont you
see that I am a weak and vulnerable sheep? The lion
took him down to the river and forced him to look in
the water and see that his face was like that of the lion,
and not like that of the sheep. Then he understood and
regained his strength and self-respect.
We are all in the same boat. We are great, invincible,
immortal spirits, which have been programmed by society into believing that we are weak, guilty, sinful, undeserving, unlovable beings, who are at the mercy of
the forces outside us. For this reason, saints, messengers and God-men come to give us the message that
our perception of ourselves is false, that we are not
sheep but lions, that we are not these bodies and
minds, but immortal souls.

ers of life, then we need to develop our faith and spiritual wisdom.
d) If the parents have any tendency to lie, or be dishonest, in their family, social, professional or business
interactions, then the child will get the messages that
one must sacrifice the truth, in order to protect his interests, through lying and cheating. He will believe
that there is no other way to survive the world. The result is a society of people who are ready to lie for their
bread and security, and do not trust anyone else, because they see the others through their own motives.
Such a person will not easily find peace of mind or harmony with himself or others.
e) The child will adopt in most cases the security
base system of the parents. If the parents look to money for security and show it with their attitudes, words
and actions, then the child will believe that the security
and happiness is to be found in money. If the parents
find security in forming dependency relationships with
family and others, that will become the security basis
of the child as he grows up. That will become his greatest attachment, for he believes that his security depends on that. If the parents find their feeling of importance and security in cultivating relationships and
contacts with important people in society and in
government, the child will give importance to this. If
the parents believe that professional position and education are security, then the child may follow this line.
If the most important thing for the parents is the acceptance, approval and esteem of others, then the child
will seek these throughout his life. (In some cases the
child may react rebelliously by rejecting the security
base of the parents. Deep in him, however, there will
be this programming.)
tance or rejection and our feeling of unity or separateness. The video cassette that we recorded in those early
years keeps on playing. These recorded programmings
affect various parts of our lives.
1. They create the state of our bodies, whether they
are relaxed or tense, whether the energy will flow
freely or not. Every emotional blockage stores itself in
the body as a blockage of energy flow, inhibiting the
flow of energy to some organ, resulting eventually in
illness. This brings to mind a woman who came with a
pain in her breast, which she had for thirty years since
her adolescence. Doctors were unable to find out the
cause of the pain, and therefore were unable to cure it.
In working with her the thought came that this was
some kind of an emotional blockage, some type of rejection of this part of her body. I asked if her breasts
had developed earlier than the other girls of her age,
and if her peer group had joked with her about this
fact. She affirmed the truth of this, and had added that
she felt very self-conscious about her breasts and tried
to hide them. This rejection of this part of her body
blocked the energy flow, and caused a state of stagnancy there which could eventually lead to the development of cysts or even tumors.
These beliefs about the body, and its relative
strength or weakness, have an immediate and powerful affect on the immunological system. We weaken the
defence system with our feelings or weakness, fear,
vulnerability and inability to protect or help ourselves.
We also suppress this system when we suppress our emotions.
2. Our prerecorded programmings reflect themselves in our relationships with others. Others, in our
family and society and even at work, will simply reflect back to us our beliefs about ourselves. One who
has no self-acceptance will not attract acceptance from
the others. He will feel hurt and bitter that others do
not accept him, but will never solve his problem, until
he starts accepting himself. Then he will attract acceptance from all those around him. The same goes for
various feelings we feel towards ourselves. One who
has no self-respect will not feel respect from the others
(and likely will not respect others in many cases). Self
love will attract love from others, and will enable us to
love others. Life is a mirror and it reflects back to us
our inner reality so that we may see it, face it, analyse it
and, if we are not satisfied, decide to change it, as one
more step in discovering our true self hidden under all
these false beliefs.
3. Our professional life is also a reflection of our
beliefs about ourselves. Self-confidence, and a belief in
our ability to succeed, will create success. A lack of
confidence will create failure.
Our goal then is to discover the limiting beliefs,
I AM NOT ABLE
There are three categories of limiting thoughts. Let
us take a brief look at some examples of each. Not that
these examples are in any way an inclusive list of the
endless possible variations of limiting thoughts, which
a person could create in his mind.
1. The first category of limiting thoughts are those
which say I am not able. There are many variations
of this false belief.
a) I am not capable of facing and coping with life
alone. I do not have the power, the intelligence, the
strength which is required.
b) I am not able to succeed in work. I am a failure. I am
lazy.
c) I am not able to communicate my feelings to others.
I am not able to communicate my needs to others.
d) I am not able to relax.
e) I am not able to sleep.
f) I am not able to meet new people, especially if they
are intelligent, or self-confident, or in some high social or political position.
g) I am not creative ; I cannot dance, sing, write, draw.
h) I cannot protect myself from people and the dangers of life.
i) I am unable to protect myself from microbes which
will enter my body and create illness.
j) I am unable to love or express my love.
17
Depending on the messages we received as children, we all develop a longer or shorter list of various
requirements, which must be fulfilled by us and others,
in order for us to feel that we are deserving. We need
the esteem of others, achievement in various aspects of
our lives, the message of love and acceptance from others.
These thoughts too, are a case of mistaken identity.
We identify with the body and mind which are vehicles in a state of evolution. They are, therefore, logically
not perfect, and require change, modification and correction. Thus, there are moments in which we feel that
we are good and deserving, and other moments in
which we feel that we are bad and undeserving. This
is what we have been programmed to believe as children. But the truth is that we are not those imperfect
vehicles of the body and mind, but rather perfect souls,
which are neither good nor bad, which are beyond this
duality. And, even if we identify with the vehicles of
the body and mind, it is illogical for us to feel good or
bad depending on the conditions or actions of these vehicles, for they will always be imperfect, in that they
are in a state of evolution. Something which is perfect
does not evolve, and something which is evolving can
never be perfect, until it completes its process of evolving. Thus, mistakes and faults are natural in the body
18
and mind, and it is ridiculous to feel undeserving because they are naturally faulty. It would be more logical to accept that we have many weaknesses and faults
in our body and mind, and that we make mistakes, but
that these mistakes are a natural part of our learning
process and thus we are always deserving of all the
goodness in life.
When we feel that we do not deserve something,
we simply block ourselves from getting it.
I MUST HAVE
3. The third type of limiting thought is that which
begins with "I must have, or I need.". These two statements are then followed consciously or subconsciously
with the belief," In order to feel security, contentment
or affirmation." In other words we believe that we
must have some particular objects, substances, situations or people in order to feel secure, content, or affirmed as personalities. A few of the many possibilities
are:
a) I must have the love, respect, acceptance or esteem
of the other to feel secure, content or affirmed as a
personality.
b) I must have the help of chemical substances like
cigarettes, tranquillisers, alcohol, drugs, medicines,
spices etc, in order to face, or cope with the world.
c) I must have plenty of extra money in the bank, in
order to feel secure or successful as a person.
d) I must have a comfortable house and plenty of
clothing, in order to feel content or respectable.
e) I must have plenty of expensive objects in my
home, in order to feel affirmed as a person.
f) I must have the presence of a particular person
(husband, wife, parent, child), in order to feel secure or meaningful in my life.
g) I must have a well-paid job, in order to feel secure
or gain the respect of society.
h) I must have plenty of social contacts, in order to feel
secure or acceptable and loved.
i) must have sexual contact frequently, in order to
feel affirmed of the love of the other.
j) I must have my health, in order to feel secure.
k) I must have my house tidy, in order to be accepted
by the others.
l) I must have cigarettes or tranquillisers or alcohol, in
order to relax.
The list is endless. The list is of our own creation. As
long as there is one person in the world who can feel
secure, content or affirmed or loved without anyone of
these prerequisites which we have placed on our life,
then we too can let go of that prerequisite. As long as
there is one being who can be happy and secure without plenty of money, objects, a fancy house, car and social contacts, it means that these are not absolute hu-
man needs like air, water, food and shelter, but rather
individually (and socially) contrived lists of conditions,
which we place on our feelings of security, contentment and sense of self-affirmation. The minute we
drop any one of these prerequisites or conditions on
our happiness, then we are a little closer to being happy most of the time. As we continue to drop one condition after the other from the list, we become happier
and happier more and more of the time, because we do
not need anything special to feel secure, content or affirmed. Our own being gradually becomes enough of a
source of security and affirmation. We become less dependent on external objects, situations and persons for
our sense of happiness. We begin to feel an inner contentment and bliss which is independent of events and
reactions from around us. Then we are free and strong
enough to really love, because there will not be any
conditions on our love, because we are not requiring
anything from the other person. The only person who
can really love is one who has become totally self-dependent, and is not looking to take from the others.
All these limiting beliefs must be searched for be-
hind our unhappy and negative experiences of life. Every time we feel unhappy, we will find some limiting
belief as the essential cause. We must find them with
self-analysis and replace them with the spiritual truths
of our immortal, invulnerable nature, and our oneness
with all creation and the Creator.
We will start the process of analysis in the next article. In the meantime you would do well to keep a diary
in which you will write each evening before sleeping, a
description of the stronger emotional experiences of
the day, trying to describe exactly what happened,
what you felt, and what beliefs, about yourself and the
world, caused you to feel that way. This will not be
easy but will come with perseverance, daily practice
and patience.
19
CHAPTER IV
OBSERVATION
The first step is the daily observation of our feelings
and thoughts. This will be more effective if we write
down our observations each evening before sleeping. If
we write in the third person, observing our personality
as if we were watching someone else function, our objectivity will be greatly increased. In observing our emotional states and feelings we are interested in discovering the following:
a) The emotions which we feel. It is not always so
easy to name the exact emotion one feels. This will take
practice, sincerity, patience and perseverance. It is also
important not to stop with the surface emotions such
as anger, jealousy or hatred. These superficial emotions
are always the result of other deeper emotions, which
are based on feelings of weakness, lack of self-acceptance or fear. We usually do not feel angry unless we
fear that we will lose something (i.e. some object, or a
relationship, or self-esteem, or the acceptance of others,
or ones security base, etc.), or fear that we will not be
able to obtain something which is very important to us.
Anger usually follows fear, a feeling of inability, depression, disappointment, hurt, or being ignored or
ridiculed.
So, in our analysis, we must go deep inside and ask,
Why does this thing bother me so much? Why is it so
unacceptable to me? What do I fear that it causes me to
feel anger, hate, jealousy or bitterness? Behind every
20
Be aware that there are many beliefs behind each emotional experience. One way of discovering these beliefs more completely is to examine each emotion separately. There will be one or more beliefs which are
creating each emotion.
Perhaps an example will be useful here. Let us take
the case of a woman who believes that her husband is
cheating on her and is having other relationships. Now
let us imagine that this is only an idea in her mind and
not the true situation. What will she feel? The first emotion she may become aware of is anger or rage. But
it is likely that behind that there will be feelings like
hurt, disappointment and rejection. There will also
likely be fear or even self-defacement. These may eventually lead to jealousy and perhaps revenge, or depression, or escapism. The stimulus is the thought that her
husband has another lover. Let us examine each emotion and hypothesize some of the probable beliefs that
there would be behind these emotions.
1. First of all, to be able to form this idea in her
mind and dwell on it, she might have some beliefs
like, Men cannot be trusted or, I am not feminine, or
beautiful, or intelligent enough to hold the interest of a
man or, I do not deserve to be loved for what I am.
Such messages could easily be formed in the mind of a
child who has witnessed infidelity in her home or in
the society around her.
2. In order to feel fear, she might believe that a
woman must have a man in order to feel secure and
fulfilled or, I will not be able to face life alone; I do
not have the power, the resources or, I will not be
able to face the others after this.
3. The feeling of disappointment or disillusionment
may come from the belief, In relationships there must
be total fidelity of one towards the other or, He cannot love me any more if he is seeing another woman.
4. Hurt may result from believing, He does not
love me or, I cannot love myself if others do not love
me or, I am not worthy of love if others do not affirm
their love for me. I cannot respect myself if I do not
have the respect of others. Such beliefs may then lead
to feelings of self- rejection, self-defacement and
eventually depression.
5. Jealousy may result from believing that I must
have him in order to feel secure, satisfied or affirmed in
my life or, I cannot be happy with any other man,
my only hope for happiness is through this one man.
6. Anger and feelings of revenge may then develop
through believing, This is wrong, This is a great injustice or, This must be punished; this deserves my
hate and I must punish him or, I will feel better if I
make him feel the hurt which I feel or, Only a non
self-respecting fool would accept this or, If I get back
at him, I will regain my dignity and self-image.
21
22
course these new beliefs may eventually become obstacles at some future date.
b) We want also to investigate whether the belief,
which is causing us trouble with ourselves or others, is
actually an absolute truth or simply a personal programming. Most beliefs are, in reality, relative concepts
which vary from culture to culture and age to age.
There are few concepts which have survived the all
consuming fire of time. We want to ask ourselves, Is
what I believe really absolute, or is it a program which
I have received from my childhood environment? Is it
absolutely true, or is it a personal perception of reality?
MAKING A DECISION
Once we have analyzed the validity of the belief
and how it affects us and our relationships with others,
then we must make a decision. Do I want to change,
or modify this belief in any way so as to find more harmony with myself and others? Do I prefer growth into
a new way of thinking and being or the security of my
old habits and ways of feeling? Do I want to change, to
get free? Am I willing to make the effort required with
all the discipline, persistence and patience which it requires?
This decision is extremely important. Without a
conscious determination to get free, one will easily become lost in the past habitual ways of thinking and
feeling. One must keep this thought continually in his
mind, My beliefs are simply the relative conditioning
of my mind. They are not absolutely true. I can change
my beliefs, my feelings. I want to grow into a world of
self-strength, self-love, happiness, peace and harmony.
I can do this - I will do this. I desire to do this.
Thus when we are getting caught up in our old emotional mechanisms and feeling hurt, rejected, weak,
unloved or unable, we will affirm to ourselves, This
is an illusion. These thoughts are not true. They are the
result of my programming. I am freeing myself from
these illusory thoughts. And then you begin to employ the positive, more expansive truths which will replace the old limiting thoughts. This brings us to the
next stage : Reprogramming.
23
evolution is the mind. Our higher intellect is not yet developed enough and thus we are observing the mind
with the mind itself. But the mind is perceiving everything through the filter of its belief system, as we have
already discussed in earlier parts of this series, thus we
are going to see a distorted view of the functioning of
the mind. When we look at the world through a red filter, everything becomes some shade of red. When we
see everything through a green filter, only green light
is allowed to pass through. When we see the world
through a filter of self-rejection, or a feeling of impotence, then everything will be perceived along those
lines and we will see rejection and failure where they
are not.
Thus we need help in gaining objectivity in this process of self-observation and self-analysis. Keeping our
daily diary in the third person will help us greatly. We
may also find great benefit from joining together with
others who are making the same effort. The group can
become a mirror for each individual member, helping

tion? Does whatever money can buy give lasting happiness and satisfaction? How long has your happiness
about a new dress, or a new car lasted? The satisfaction
of a tasty dinner or drink lasts a few hours, if it doesnt
turn into displeasure even more quickly. That lovely
trip we took was great fun and we broadened our
minds, but it has not become a source of lasting happiness. Our house has become more of a burden, and the
second and third house even more so. More responsibilities, more expenses, more work to keep them up,
more worries about what will happen to them.
Let us not be unrealistic. A certain amount of money is essential for survival, for basic needs and for selffulfillment. But this is a very small amount. I have personally experienced how wonderful a simple life is,
with just enough to cover basic needs, and I prefer it to
depending on money, and what it can, buy for my happiness. This does not mean that I would not be interested in having more money to direct towards the goal of
human evolution. But I do not believe that I will be
more secure, satisfied or happy if I have it. Probably I
would have more concerns on the material level.
c) Am I so incapable? Are the others around me
more intelligent, more able, more prepared for facing
life than I am? Am I inferior to them in ability to survive in this world? How do they all survive? So many
of them are alone and with less abilities than I, and
with more needs. How do they survive? How do the
birds, animals and plants survive? Am I not more intelligent and capable than they are? Then why all this fear
and insecurity about facing life alone? Have I been conditioned to believe that I am weak and incapable?
Have my parents undermined my sense of power and
ability?
We must also analyse this belief in terms of its basic
brother core beliefs, such as life is dangerous and difficult and there is no power or God which will protect me or help me. I am alone. This is, of course, a
matter of faith. But a logical look at the universe will
uncover that there is obviously some great universal
intelligence, which is creating and sustaining this
world, in which so many different beings exist in such
a delicate ecological balance (regardless of the fact that
we have destroyed this balance). All the major religious systems accept the reality of an all-powerful and
omniscient consciousness, which is in intimate contact
with all beings on the earth.
Not to believe this, is not to believe Christ, Buddha,
Krishna, Rama, Mohammed, Zoroaster, Sai Baba and
all the saints of all the religions in history. What makes
all these saints different from us is their FAITH in this
truth.
Thus I question my belief that the world is dangerous and that I must protect myself, that I am not capa-
27
ble of protecting myself and that I need plenty of money and/or someone to take care of me. Perhaps I have
been brain-washed by the beliefs of my parents, teachers and society. Perhaps I have been influenced by TV,
newspapers, magazines and cinema, which focus on
violence and the negative in the world. Perhaps I am
not as insecure and as unsafe as I thought. Perhaps I
can feel secure even without money or an exclusive relationship. Perhaps I can find another inner security
base.
28
truths, which are most effective in neutralizing the negative effects of our false programming. We want to
make an affirmation, or a simple but potent phrase out
of this truth, so that we can reprogram our mind with
it. How is this done?
a) Whenever the mind is under the control of negative thoughts such as helplessness, fear, anxiety, worry,
insecurity, etc., bring this new belief which you want to
establish in your mind as an affirmation. An example
would be, I am an immortal soul. I can receive no
harm. Even if my body dies I will still exist unharmed. The key phrase here is that I am an immortal soul. The other thoughts are secondary thoughts
which may or may not come after. Another key phrase
would be, All is happening according to a divine
plan, or, Life gives me exactly what I need every moment.
Which concept you choose, and how you phrase it,
it is up to you. It is a personal matter. Different phrases
have differing amounts of power and effectiveness for
each individual. You may work on phrases, or concepts, which have not been presented here, or which I
have never heard of. It makes no difference. It is only
important that that phrase removes the feeling of insecurity from your mind, and hopefully opens you up to
a larger view of yourself and an awareness of your real
spiritual nature, and the spiritual nature of the world
around you.
b) An affirmation can be repeated on a daily basis in
an attempt to reprogram the mind. This may be done
while walking, driving, cleaning the house, waiting for
someone, or at any time when the mind is not consciously engaged.
c) The affirmation may also be programmed into
the mind by relaxing the mind through some technique
such as deep relaxation, mind control or meditation,
and repeating these truths mentally. At this moment
both the conscious and the subconscious mind are in
contact and the conscious mind can give messages to
the subconscious where these beliefs are stored. While
doing this, one would do well to imagine this new belief to be true by feeling it inwardly, or by creating images, on the screen of the mind, which represent this
new belief, this new reality.
d) One may also write these affirmations many
times a day trying to feel them to be actually true as he
writes.
Some combination of these various ways of reprogramming the mind, with these spiritual truths, will
help each of us to liberate ourselves from these blockages towards feeling secure, satisfied and happy in life.
Work seriously on this questionnaire and subsequent
analysis. Keep your notes concerning this questionnaire, because in the next chapter we will use your an-
swers to analyse your beliefs about your talents and abilities and inner powers.

LIMITING BELIEFS
What are those beliefs which undermine our power,
ability, creativity, talent and expression? The answers
to this question might be found in your answers to
questions number 7, 9, 11, 16, 24, 29 and 30 in the questionnaire given in the previous chapter Do not be limited, however, to investigating these answers only. You
may find that your childhood environment may have
programmed you with some of the following limiting
beliefs:
1. I cannot dance, sing, draw, make arithmetic calculations, face difficult people, etc.
2. If I fail, they will laugh at me, they will criticise me,
they will not love me.
3. I must be perfect to be loved. (It is easy for a child
to get this impression, since he has likely heard angry voices and criticism whenever he made mistakes and kind words and approval when he was
correct.)
4. I cannot do this as well as the others. Thus I should
not try. I must do it best or better. I am not acceptable if I am not the best. (This is a common programming of our competitive culture, which gives
emphasis to who is better in grades, sports, business, etc, rather than to the effort or to the moral
quality of the person.)
5. I am not as smart as the others, and thus will not be
able tosucceed, nor will I be acceptable to them.
6. If I do that which I want to do, (i.e. change jobs, ex-

Decide what you want to do, what you want to
learn, to develop or to develop further. Make a list of
such desires. Among the many possibilities, you may
decide that you want to sing, dance, draw or to meditate, or to massage or to cook better, to overcome a certain fear, to offer more love and service to others, to
have more discipline, to start a business, to study a language or some science. There is a whole world of beautiful forms of learning and expression. Nothing that we
develop or learn is ever lost. It is all recorded in our
causal body, in the soul memory. All the objects we accumulate in life will be left here, but the abilities and
awareness and knowledge we develop will be available to us in future lives, if it is useful to us then.
Thus we would do better in life to spend time on
learning and developing our abilities on all levels, material, emotional, mental and spiritual, so that we may
find real happiness and spiritual growth into higher
levels of consciousness.
Once you have made your list of desired abilities,
then start to make a program as to how, on a very
practical level, you are going to do it. Are you going to
follow a seminar, hire a teacher, procure books on the
subject? How much time are you going to spend each
day on developing that ability? Practice makes per-

CHAPTER VII
WE ARE LOVE
Our basic nature is love. When we let go of body identification, and the personality relaxes and feels
completely secure, we will find at the centre of our being a reservoir of peace and love for all beings. That is
what we really are. That love and peace are the contents of a lake which exists in the centre of our being,
but the river, which carries the contents of our interior
towards the world around, is blocked with various debris and obstacles. Thus there is little or no flow. How
can we clean up that river so that our natural self can
express itself in this world?
Discovering what blocks us from loving ourselves
will be facilitated by the questionnaire and method of
analysing it presented to you in chapters 4 and 5 of this
book. Even if you havent worked with that questionnaire, you will understand and benefit from the following analysis, but of course you will get much more benefit if you work first, or even afterwards, with the
questionnaire. In that way, you will discover your specific obstacles to loving yourself.
CHILDHOOD PROGRAMMING
Many of us have been programmed in our childhood years to understand that we are lovable and worthy of acceptance and respect from others only if we
fulfil certain prerequisites. Depending on our parents
and childhood environment, combined with the character we have brought into this life, we have learned to
believe that we are acceptable, lovable and worthy only if we fulfil certain conditions. It is absolutely essential to analyse ourselves and discover which conditions
we have allowed to be put on our self-love and feeling
of worthiness. Otherwise, we will never be able to find
lasting peace, satisfaction, happiness, harmony and, in
some cases, even health. The lack of self-love, self- acceptance and self-worth undermine all these, as well as
rob us of our ability to communicate with, or love others. This leads to many so-called complexes and an inability to feel comfortable or at ease. In such cases, we
often feel the need to do something to prove our worthiness of love or acceptability from others.
In those situations, we may think that we are doing
things for others out of love, but the truth is that we are
acting in that certain way which, we believe, will attract the acceptance, respect and love of the others. We
need affirmation of their love and acceptance in order
to feel that we are okay, so that we can relax and accept
ourselves. Such a person will never feel free to be himself. He will always need to be what others want him to
be, so that he can be acceptable to them. But what happens if he finds himself in an environment where three
different people want him to act in three different
ways? What can he do? He is bound to experience rejection from two of them. Does that mean that he is unworthy? Also, what happens when what, those around
us want us to be, is completely in conflict with what we
ourselves feel we must be? Unless we have self-love
and self-acceptance, we will definitely suffer.
We cannot live our lives based on the acceptance of
others, just in order to have their love. We must follow
our inner voice as long as we do not intentionally harm
anyone through our actions. We are not responsible for
the others emotions when we act according to our inner voice, not wishing harm to anyone, but others
around us get upset because what we do does not fit
into their expectations, addictions or programmings. If
their love is so conditional, and we have to give up
who we really are, to be loved by them, then that is not
love. It is the manipulation of our lives by the other in
order to fulfil his personal desires or expectations. We
do not help a person to mature emotionally and spiritually by allowing him to act in this way, or have his
way, because we are afraid of being rejected by him.
This has nothing to do with the sacrifice of love. It is
the result of our fear of rejection and lack of self-confidence and self-acceptance.

SPIRITUAL TRUTHS
Christ said he would introduce us to the truth that
would set us free. Spiritual truth is like a light which
shines in the darkness and thus removes the ignorance,
which is at the basis of all these wrong programmings.
Let us examine some of the spiritual truths which will
liberate us.
1. I am who I am independently of the opinion of
others. Most of us give more attention to the people
around us than the God within us. Each person sees us
in a different way. Their various opinions do not
change who I am. Each sees me through his own filters,
beliefs, fears and programmings.
2. My value or acceptability depends only on
three factors.
a) Whether my thoughts, words and actions are in
harmony with my inner conscience. I act ac-
35
us.
36

them.
5. When our energy is low. When we are sick, tired,
run-down, we have less patience, strength, tolerance,
forgiveness and love for those around us. We become
more easily annoyed, hurt, upset and angered by what
people around us do or say. It is important then, either
to live in such a way as to keep our energy always
high, or else be able, when it is low, to be unaffected by
it. The second is more difficult because the mind, at our
present level of evolution, is still very much affected by
the state of the body. For this reason, it is extremely important for us to employ the various techniques such as
physical exercises, breathing exercises, proper diet,
deep relaxation and meditation for keeping a healthy,
vital and strong body and mind. Then we will have
much more energy, patience, forgiveness and love for
others.
6. When we are disturbed by personal problems.
In such cases, we have less energy, patience and interest for others. All our energy is absorbed either in worrying about, or trying to solve our problems more effectively, or to learn not to identify so much with our
problems when we have them. Some may move down
both paths simultaneously. The second is, of course,
more difficult in that it requires the spiritual discrimination between the Self and the mind. The problems
exist in the mind and concern the temporary reality of
the body and mind. The eternal witness, which we really are, is not affected by these problems. If we can develop that awareness, then when various concerns occupy our minds, we can let them take their path
undisturbed. We do not need to get upset or afraid. We
know from experience that just as they have come, they
will also leave. In this way, they leave much more
quickly.
An effective way, of overcoming this blockage towards loving others, is to practise self-analysis with the
help of a daily diary and come to an understanding as
to which beliefs, programmings, fears or expectations
are creating this problem in our minds. Then we want
to find the various spiritual affirmations which will
help us to overcome it. We can also explain to others
that we have inner problems which are occupying our
attention and energy so that they do not think wrongly
that we do not love them.
7. When we do not love and accept ourselves. We
have discussed this point at length in the previous
chapter. It is obvious that a person who does not have
enough love for himself will not have enough for others. It is also true that the same conditions, which he
has placed on his love for himself, will obstruct his acceptance of, and love for, others.
There may be many more obstacles to loving. Think
of them and analyse them yourselves. In essence, however, they boil down to some basic core beliefs such as
the following:
a) I am this body and this mind.
b) I am vulnerable and others can harm me. I must
protect myself.
c) What is different is dangerous.
d) Maybe what I believe is not true. Then I am not secure.
e) When others disagree with me, or criticise me, it
means that I am wrong or no good.
f) Others are responsible for my happiness and unhappiness.
g) Others must earn my love.
The spiritual aspirant, who has begun to understand and believe and employ some of the spiritual
truths, will recognise these thoughts as based on ignorance of the reality of the one Universal Spirit, which is
expressing itself through all beings, regardless of their
form or behaviour. He is aware that the same universal
consciousness is functioning within himself and all
other beings around him. He is aware that he is immortal and invulnerable. He realises that he himself is the
creator of his reality; that his past and present beliefs,
thoughts, words and actions are projecting outward
and reflecting off the mirror of life to become his everyday experiences. He takes full responsibility for whatever he feels and for whatever happens to him.
He also realises that all beings want to love, that all
beings are God himself incarnated, and that God is
Love and Love is God. So every being is love, covered
by an ego. When we remove that ego we find love.
Thus he looks beyond the ego in the people around
him and concentrates on the love which is within them.
He understands that he and they are souls in the process of evolution and thus has patience and love for
himself and others. He gradually learns to love universally and unconditionally.

CHAPTER IX

SINS
No number of sins can ever disconnect me from
God. They can only create within me an internal blockage, so that I may cut myself off from that feeling of unity with my source. The moment I function in disharmony with my conscience, then I myself close my door
to my inner consciousness and thus to the ray and its
source. The source is there and the ray too, but I have
closed myself off from them and thus feel myself separate and vulnerable in a world which I believe to be
dangerous, and in which I feel I must protect myself. In
such a case, I am more likely to function out of a type
of panic in which, again out of fear, I would act against
my conscience and close the door to my inner self even
tighter. The feeling of sin and guilt are not of much use
in proceeding spiritually. Christ came to give us the
LIMITING BELIEFS
Let us look at some of the limiting ideas which create a feeling of separateness between us and God, life
and others around us.
1. There is no God. It is difficult to believe that anyone really believes this. Anyone who has ever walked
in nature, looked at the stars, studied biology, physics
or any other aspect of creation, must be struck by the
incredible complexity and interdependency of all objects. It leaves little doubt that there is a creative intelligence behind the universe that we see. If they want
to invent another name for that universal intelligence,
that is fine. This point, however, cannot really be argued, for there are so many aspects which can be
brought forth for and against.
I would like to say in addition that it would be a
mistake to judge Gods nature or existence by what is
said by those who say they believe in God, or who
claim to be his representatives. They may have good
intentions and be devoted people, but most are still in
a process of evolution and cannot understand or express the totality of the universal One. It will eventual-
41
42
rial and taking its life essence from the tree, though it
appears separate.
The third relationship is one of Unity. There is only
God. Since God is the one light which is manifesting itself as the entire objective world then, as a ray of that
light, I am also the source, I am God. God and I are
one. Referring to our original diagram, in the first case
I am identifying with the image which appears on the
screen of consciousness and feel separate from all the
other images, and also separate from the source. In the
second case, I am identifying with the ray, realising
that I have a very close relationship with the source. In
the third case, I identify with the source itself, realising
that that is my true reality.
Each of us is on a path of evolution in which we are
passing from a feeling of separateness from God, to a
feeling of relatedness, to a feeling of oneness. This is
beautifully expressed in the following poem by Khalil
Gibran:
derstanding ones real relationship with God is something which takes thousands of years. We can also see
that mans perception of Gods answer in each case becomes more subtle and refined. In the end, the true relationship of unity is realised as being like that of a river flowing back into the sea, thus losing its separate
identity. Eventually one realises that the relationship of
unity always existed and that God was always close to,
and around us, and that there was no need to climb the
holy mountain, because Gods presence is not limited
to specific holy places, but rather is an omnipresent
presence, which envelopes our lives in the everyday
here and now.
We have everything to gain by practising the presence of God, by constantly imagining that we are in
harmony with the Universal Being and that we are living for it, in it and that it is protecting us and providing
for our needs. As Apostle Paul expressed to the Athenians almost 2,000 years ago, In Him we live and
move and have our being. We would do well to believe that we are pure children of a God who loves us
and wants us to be happy and healthy. A person who
can cultivate this faith and feeling of purity and worthiness will begin to experience the miracles of love in
his life. He will relax. He will feel safe and protected.
He will feel confident of being able to handle any crisis
or obstacle. He will be able to accept what happens in
his life and use it as a learning experience. He will be
able to continue his process of evolution without fear
and attachment. He will desire to be a useful instrument in the creation of a world of peace and love. He
will want to relieve the pain of his fellow brothers and
sisters in the one family of the Universal Spirit. He will
be happy with whatever he has, knowing that he has
whatever he needs in order to make the next step in his
evolution. He will be free from depression, jealousy,
bitterness, hurt, anger or hate. He will see all beings as
his own self reflected in another medium. He will feel
more and more unity with those around him. His creative inner potential and productivity will blossom
forth with greater flow, as the various obstacles of fear
and doubt are removed, and he becomes a joyous being shining forth his beauty into the world.
43
CHAPTER X
44
seeing everything as difficult or negative. We will create an inner world view which is negative and in
which all things are suspect and potentially dangerous
to us. Thus our failures and sufferings will be projected
on each new moment, which we distort with past experiences of life. In general our perception of life is twofold, consisting of how we see life and how we see
ourselves. If we see life as threatening and ourselves as
weak, then everything and everyone becomes a threat.
If we see ourselves as strong and capable, then we can
confront each situation with clarity and peace of mind.
This helps us to perceive each situation clearly and to
act effectively.
5. We are also affected by our experiences concerning particular objects, beings and experiences in general in previous lives. Our previous life experiences in
other bodies on earth affect our perception of people
and situations in the present. One who has died by
drowning in a past life cannot see the sea objectively.
He perceives it through his previous unpleasant experience of dying in that way. The same would be said of
someone who has died by fire, or has been suffocated
in a earthquake, or suffered any other type of trauma.
That previous experience, whether pleasant or unpleasant, will be distorting our present experience
without our knowing why. Thus we can understand
why children, although born into the same family, receiving many of the same messages and experiences in
their childhood years, have different ways of perceiving and relating to the same objective reality around
them. The answer lies in the many previous lives in
which they already accumulated a wide variety of different experiences, which are distorting their present
perception of reality through the subconscious mind.
Thus, when we see a person, we are not seeing him
as he is, but rather in light of our previous experiences
with that particular person, with people of that type, or
with life itself, and our previous lifetime experiences
with people, in addition to the messages concerning
people, and types of, which we have received from
others in the past.
It is important that we get free from this distortion
of reality so that we can eventually perceive the divinity in all, and experience the harmony which that vision
brings. This breaks down the experience of separateness and brings the realisation that all is God: that all is
a reflection of the One Divine Light, as mentioned in
the previous chapter. Otherwise, the result is that we
will live in a world of fear, anxiety, mistrust, and conflicts with ourselves and others, which have no real basis. We will argue and fight over various nonsensical
points simply because we have different pasts which
distort our perceptions.
Our first work is to begin to negate the way we are
45
perceiving the world around us, by remembering constantly that we are perceiving the past and not the present in each object and being. We can remind ourselves
a number of times a day that we are not seeing our surroundings as they are, but rather as we have been conditioned to see them by our past experiences. We can
begin to analyse how we see the various people in our
lives, and when we discover that we tend to use the
same words like unfriendly, not trustworthy, or selfish
to describe the various people in our lives, then we
might want to check to see whether we are not creating
our own images, which we are then placing on these
persons. If we are expecting mistrust, or selfishness
from people, then we will obviously attract them from
the people around us. If we believe that people want to
manipulate us, then they will. If we believe that they
love us without conditions, then this too will happen.
When we have various re-occurring problems or emotions in our lives, it will do well to look inward to
see whether we may be creating them, with our various beliefs based on previous experiences and messages, which have been programmed into us as children and young adults.
At one time, people believed that the world was
flat; they also believed that the sun revolved around
the earth. Now we realise differently, though perceptively it still seems that the earth is flat and that the sun
revolves around the earth, our knowledge tells us that
our senses are fooling us. You believe that you are sitting still reading this text, but in reality you are moving
in an easterly direction about 1,000 miles per hour. At
the same time, you are moving around the Sun at a velocity of about 66,600 miles per hour, and around the
center of the galaxy at about 500,000 miles per hour,
yet your senses tell you that you are sitting still.
In the same way, our senses tell us that we are living in a separate world full of potential dangers. Our
senses tell us that we are these vulnerable bodies, that
we are limited and impotent in this world of great
powers. But the truth, according to those enlightened
ones who know the truth, is that our senses are deceiving us, just as they did concerning the flatness of the
earth and the movement of the sun. They tell us that
we are immortal, invulnerable souls in the process of
evolution, who have come temporarily to earth, so as
to continue the unfoldment of our true divinity. They
tell us that we are all expressions of the one universal
46
spirit, that we are one family, and we must live in harmony with each other. They tell us that we have the
power, within us, to move mountains, if we have faith
in ourselves and in the power of the creator, of whom
we are a part. They say that our real protection and
safety is in loving and giving and watching over the
needs of others. We are told that if we do that, all our
needs will be cared for and we will live in harmony
and happiness. We are told that gradually we will become liberated from the veil of the past and awaken to
the light of the present, to realise that all is God and
that all is happening according to a divine plan, that
we are safe and secure in every situation, that we are
love, that we are God, that we are beauty, and that life
is a process of expressing more and more effectively
our divine inner potential.
But it is not only the spiritual teachers who understand and espouse these truths of unity. Marvel at Albert Einsteins way of expressing it.
A human being is a part of the whole, called by us
the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of
prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and
to our affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our
task must be to free ourselves from this prison by
widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living
creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The
striving for such an achievement is in itself a part of the
liberation and a foundation for inner security.
CHAPTER XI
47
48
concentrate on it, imagining ourselves to feel differently. Thus, when we are overcome with fear, we can
imagine ourselves full of courage, strength and faith.
When we are angry we can imagine ourselves strong,
peaceful and understanding. This exercise in conditioning the mind positively, gradually prepares the mind
for the higher levels of consciousness of love, peace and
inner happiness.
5. Attachments, aversions and desires cause the
mind to get stuck in a vicious circle of attachment, disappointment, weakness and further dependency. Every
time we believe that we must have something in order
to be happy, secure or to accept ourselves, then we
deepen the belief that we are not inwardly complete.
We allow ourselves to be controlled by the mistaken belief
that something outside ourselves can give us any lasting, secure pleasure or affirmation. By believing that, and allowing ourselves to get attached to persons, objects, places
and situations, we continue to undermine our sense of
power and self-dignity and our ability to face and enjoy
life, depending on the immortal power of our soul. Every attachment weakens our belief in ourselves.
When we believe that we cannot relax without a
cigarette, or wake up without a coffee, or sleep without
a tranquilliser, or feel secure without a spouse, or a certain amount of money, we are simply strengthening
our mistaken belief in our weakness. We are ignoring
the spiritual truth of our inner fulfilment, our immortality, our invulnerability, our unique worth as specific
expressions of the one divine spiritual being; our spiritual unity with all beings, our inner bliss and strength
and ability to face and overcome every situation, which
ever may come in our lives. We ignore the truth that
there is a universal divine consciousness, which is the
centre of our being, our real self, which is constantly
watching over our lives and guiding us. We forget that
we are part of a divine plan which is channeling all
souls towards eventual enlightenment and unity with
all. We ignore the truth that whatever is outside of us is temporary, and will soon perish, and so is not a suitable foundation upon which to base our happiness, security or selfworth.
Our security can be had through the realisation of
our immortal invulnerable nature. Happiness can be
experienced through the realisation of our loving unity
with all beings and objects in this world. We are attached to, and desire whatever is separate from us,
whatever we do not have. When we have eaten, we do
not desire food. When we realise our unity with all, we
will desire much less, and feel much more happy and
fulfilled. We can experience affirmation through the realisation that we are rays flowing out from the one divine source, which we call God, that we are expressions
of the one divine being, and thus are always worthy of
love and acceptance, just as all others are always worthy of our love and acceptance, because they are our
brothers in the universal family and are travelling on
the same road with us towards unity, whether they
know it or not.
6. All thoughts of limitation deny our inherent divinity and the God-power, which can flow through us
into the material world, as we continue to unblock ourselves and increase our levels of consciousness. There
is no obstacle placed in our lives which we do not
have the inner resources to overcome (sometimes
overcoming means accepting). Our lesson in life is to
learn to pump up from within that power, intelligence
and creative thinking, which we need, in order to overcome the obstacles which life presents to us. It would
do us well to realise that these obstacles exist purposely, so as to offer us the opportunity to develop,
strengthen, and bring forth these inner abilities and
powers.
7. Even simple thoughts about this temporary, dualistic world, or its material objects, can cause our
mind to associate endlessly with a wide variety of useless details, which entangle the mind in vicious circles
of increasing identification and attachment, without
there being any real reason to do so. We gain nothing
from most thoughts which we allow to pass through
our minds.
We would do much better to mentally repeat a
phrase or word which reminds us of the spiritual
truths, or brings us inner peace. We can repeat in our
minds various words such as love, peace, harmony,
truth, I am an immortal soul, I am a part of God, I am
an instrument of God, I am love, Lord Jesus Christ
have mercy on me, or any other phrases which may
bring light, peace or harmony into our minds. Such
words or phrases can be repeated while we are walking, driving, waiting, washing, cleaning or during any
other activity which does not require our conscious attention. It is especially beneficial to concentrate on such
thoughts while we are falling asleep or waking up.

CHAPTER XII
n July of 1970, I was ready to commit suicide because I could not see any reason for living, any
meaning in life. Today my life is full of meaningful
activities which bring me joy and satisfaction. What
happened between 1970 and today -20 years later? My
beliefs and perceptions of myself and the world
around me changed.
In 1970 I was a chemical engineer working in an office at a large chemical industrial plant. The work was
interesting when there were problems to solve, but I
could see no relationship between what I was doing
and life itself. My work had no meaning for me. My life
itself had no meaning for me. The crisis became so severe that I decided to hand in my resignation and give
myself a year to see if I could find any reason to continue living.
Watching the evening news daily, my mind became
filled with the insane senselessness of our world, lacking in any reason or logic. Everywhere there was
hypocrisy, lying, suffering, violence, war, hatred - everything that no one wanted. If life was meant for living 60, 80, 100 years of this insanity, only to die with no
future continuation, then I was not interested. I preferred to die then, at the age of 21, rather than live such
a meaningless life just for the sake of whatever small
pleasures I might be able to find, unless, of course,
there was some reason for the world being as it is, or
that there was some purpose to this life.
My first realisation was that I was not alone in my
feelings about lifes meaninglessness. This inability of
people to find a deeper purpose in life had led to all
that we see around us, alcoholism, drug addiction, the
need for tranquillisers, anxiety, worry, fear, hurt, bitterness, anger, hatred, aggression, violence, war, injustice, poverty, famine, illness, unhappiness, suffering of
all kinds and the great disillusionment of the youth
and their subsequent rejection of society, and all its
consequences.
Our vision of a meaningless world leads us to live
meaningless lives, in which we do not really live in
harmony with our best interests. Our mistaken perception of the world does not allow us to discover the inherent reasons for what we see around us, and what
our role is here on earth.
THE WORLD WE SEE
We see a world in which there is injustice. We cry in
bitterness for what injustices have been done to us. In
50
PLATOS CAVE
We are like the people in Platos cave who see the
various shadows on the wall of the cave created by a
fire behind them. The objects, passing between the
light of the fire and their backs, create on the wall in
front of them a series of moving shadows. Not having
seen any other reality, they consider these shadows to
be the totality of reality and develop a whole science of
shadows, in which they analyse the hows and the whys
of the comings and goings of these shadows. They base
their whole lives on the phenomena of shadows, which
51
suddenly seem to be miracles. The miracle of life begins to reveal itself to us and we become like little children enjoying each experience as new and unique.
On the emotional level, we start to feel more and
more compassion and love towards those around us.
We seldom have negative emotions, and are filled with
the joy of being with so many brothers and sisters, as
our sense of family starts to expand to include all beings everywhere. We feel very safe, because we are always with
`our own, and therefore, not in danger. A sense of
gratitude for all that we have and for the beauty of life
starts to fill our hearts, and we frequently whisper to
ourselves, thank you, thank you for all this.
On the mental level we experience peace, contentment, harmony and creativity. The mind now becomes
an instrument for creation, and the expression of the
divine potential which is within us. There is a peaceful
creative flow which brings joy to our environment and
to ourselves. Life becomes a game; a game of growth
and creation. We take ourselves less seriously. We definitely have a goal in life and are very productive, but
we realise that we are in a process of evolution and that
life on earth is temporary. We do the best we can, without anxiety and worry about the results. We no longer
get caught up in senseless arguments about who is
right or what system is the best. We realise that there is
a great variety of systems and experiences for the various souls to pass through. We gain tolerance and understanding, and can accept people even though they
have completely different beliefs from our own. We are
at peace and feel a oneness with all beings.

we see around us, and that nothing could possibly happen which is not a projection and a part of that being.
Such a person sees the surface of life, the reflections
and not the source, the bodies and not the spirit, the
dream and not the reality.
When we have a dream that we are in danger, we
experience various negative emotions in our sleep. We
realise that we had feared and worried in vain, that
there was no danger, that our dream self was not our
real self and that our real self was not in danger, although our dream self appeared to be in danger. In the
same way, we will wake up some day and realise that
this physical and mental self is not our real self, and although we believe often that we are in danger, our real
self which exists even after the harm and destruction of
the temporary body, is never in danger. When we really begin to accept and believe this, we feel completely
different in situations which in the past used to create
hurt, fear, anger and other unpleasant emotions.

CHAPTER XIV
56
pose of development and expression on earth of the latent spiritual powers and abilities, which lie within our
soul nature. We are not personalities. We have personalities, we own personalities. When we make this distinction, our lives will be happier, freer and more full of
creativity and contentment. Thus we may call the
body, mind and personality, vehicles or instruments of
the soul. All our problems in life are the result of our identification with, and our mistaken belief that we are
these vehicles.
We have used the following diagram in previous
chapters, but let us use it again to facilitate our understanding of our relationship with our vehicles.
The spirit is one with God. It is pure, immortal consciousness without any modifications whatsoever. For
`some reason it projects itself into the spiritual, astral,
mental and physical worlds, through the various vehicles or bodies. We have already discussed the nature
of, and purpose and function of, each of these bodies in
the earlier chapters. The consciousness of the Spirit, as
it passes through each of these vehicles (which themselves are manifestations of this one consciousness)
grows more and more material. Let us take a moment
here, for it is not easy to imagine.
Imagine that this consciousness is like a pure white
light. As it projects itself towards the earth, imagine
that at each level, as it descends, the light itself manifests as a filter of slightly greater density. The light cre-
ELECTRICITY
Another good example is electricity. The same electricity flows through many light bulbs. Some have the
ability to express a great amount of light and others
less (200 w, l00 w, 75 w, 40 w, 25 w etc.) Some express
colored light. Many bulbs have different shapes. Some
bulbs last for many years and others for a few days. All
these bulbs are various vehicles of expression for the
one electricity which is flowing in all the houses. The
electricity is the one universal spirit, and the various
bulbs are the various types of bodies and minds,
through which that one universal spirit is expressing itself. The limitation of expression is not in the electricity or the spirit, but in the bulbs. We, as `evolving
bulbs, have the ability to increase our ability to express
ever greater quantities of our spiritual energy through
our bodies and minds.
Take the example of the cassette recorder. There are
many qualities of cassette recorders. Their recording
and playing power and quality can vary greatly. They
exist in a wide variety of appearances. There are expensive and inexpensive ones, and they come in various
colours and shapes, yet there is one and the same electricity flowing through all of them. Each cassette player
is like the body and personality of each person. The
cassette which is in each player is his mind, and what is
57
GETTING FREE
Our goal is to free ourselves from our identification
with our vehicles so as to experience our universal self.
There are various steps to this process.
1. We will need to reprogram the contents of our
cassette. We will have to erase the old programmings
and beliefs, which are the function of our early childhood years and past lives, and record the new spiritual
truths, which we are learning and experiencing into
our mind through affirmations, meditation, prayer,
reading, reflection and contact with those who have
spiritual tendencies or knowledge.
2. We will have to realise that the ego is a non-entity which can be programmed in any way we choose.
There are, of course, tendencies from past experiences
which must be respected and worked with and occasionally circumvent, but that we are not limited by
what our ego appears to be at present.
3. We will need to realise that our true self is beyond the body and the mind and that we existed, exist
now, and will always exist independent of the existence of the body or mind.
4. Our true self is unaffected by the various events
which occur to the body and the mind. One who is
well established in this belief does not fear about his security or appearance to others. He is beyond worry
about the criticism of others. He follows his own inner
voice and conscience. He does not suffer when the
body is harmed or the personality is hurt or depressed.
He observes objectively the various states through
which they pass. He acts in order to protect them, without worry of getting involved in the melodrama of it
all, as most of us do.
5.Gradually we must realise that our true self is
God, that we are the one universal consciousness
which is expressing itself through all that we see. This
is the highest realisation which will come through our
spiritual effort and Divine Grace.
All negative emotions which we have are based on
our identification with the vehicles through which we
are expressing ourselves. This identification eventually
disturbs and ruins our relationship with ourselves and
with others, and is a great obstacle to our spiritual
58
TECHNIQUE
The following technique will be useful in getting
free from this vicious circle of identification and suffering.
Sit with your eyes closed (spine straight if you can)
and search in your mind for the various negative emotions which you have been feeling recently or in the
past. Look at all of them, large, medium and small. If
positive emotions also come to mind, do not reject
them. Acknowledge them and continue letting the various emotions pass through your awareness. After becoming conscious of each emotion, repeat the phrase;
I FEEL THIS EMOTION OF________ WHEN MY
CONSCIOUSNESS IS IDENTIFYING WITH ITS VEHICLES. As each emotion appears in your mind, repeat
this phrase and try to understand it. Do not avoid using it on positive emotions if they come to mind. Do
not concentrate on specific emotions more than others.
Apply it to weak as well as strong emotions. Do this for
about three minutes, four or five times a day.
Do it extra times when you are feeling strong negative emotions. When you are aware of what the specific
emotion is, you can express the phrase directly for that
emotion, such as, I FEEL HURT WHEN I AM IDENTIFYING WITH MY VEHICLES. I FEEL FEAR WHEN
I AM IDENTIFYING WITH MY VEHICLES.
If expressing this in some other way is more suitable, then feel free to create your own phrase which
helps you free yourself from the control which these
negative emotions have on you.
One word about the emotion of love; it cannot really be considered as an emotion when in its highest
form. The various less-than-universal forms of love are
naturally emotions based on the identification with vehicles which have a certain attraction between them. Universal love, however, is the absence of identification
with our specific vehicle and the identification with all
vehicles and thus the feeling of unity with all.
I suggest that you perform this technique four or
five times a day (extra times when having problems)
for about a week before going on to the next chapter.
CHAPTER XV
ur thoughts are like waves, which flow out into our environment and create a physical, emotional, mental and psychic atmosphere,
which affects all who are near us, especially those who
are emotionally connected to us. For this reason, it is especially important to exercise discrimination in the
types of thoughts which we allow to flow through our
minds.
Our thoughts create our reality. Our thoughts are
like the film through which the creative spiritual power of our soul flows, impinging on the screen of life,
creating the situations which we encounter on a daily
basis. Positive thoughts create a positive reality, and
negative thoughts create a negative reality. Those who
live and work with us, or belong to the same social circle, are affected by our thoughts, (unless they have evolved enough spiritually, to have developed contact
with their inner self, and are unaffected by the
thoughts and vibrations around them).
Thus we must consider two basic questions. How
do our thoughts affect those around us, and how can
we purify our thoughts so as to be a positive influence
on our environment?. And secondly, how do other
peoples thoughts affect us and how can we develop
immunity from their negative thoughts?
59
He may, however, have not yet transcended an attachment to the pleasure of sex or food and may be affected by others vibrations in relationship to these tendencies. We each have our specific weak point, or
vulnerability, which we have come to work on.
Another case in which a certain tendency or vibration may not find response in us, or another, is when it
has not yet been cultivated. For example, the feeling of
love and devotion for God may find little sympathetic
vibration in those who have not yet developed it to
some extent. The same may be true for peace or universal love. This does not mean that we are wasting our
time in expressing these qualities to such people. Seeds
which are planted today may sprout in some years. It is
worth planting them and leaving the results to God.
60
OTHERS NEGATIVITY
Not all people experience all the vibrations and emotional games which are going on in a room or home.
At this moment there are hundreds of radio and TV
waves vibrating in the room where you are sitting. You
are not experiencing them however, because you are
not tuned in to them (unless the radio or TV are turned
on). In the same way, we can tune in, or not, to the various melodramas which are going on around us. We
can get lost in them and become seriously disturbed by
them, or we can recognise them as opportunities for
evolution for all involved and offer whatever help we
can without getting lost emotionally in them. If someone is drowning, we cannot offer much help if we
jump in and are unable to swim and thus drown with
them. We can offer more help by standing on the shore
and throwing a lifesaver. If we are sure that we are capable swimmers in the sea of emotions, then we may
jump in and keep our head above water while helping
the other to shore.
We will be able to do this when we have transcended the particular emotions which are polluting the atmosphere, such as hurt, fear, anger etc. There is a great
difference, however, between transcendence and suppression. Some people simply suppress their emotions
and believe that they have transcended them. Suppression means that we are still susceptible to the emotion,
and do feel it on a subconscious level, but we do not allow ourselves to feel it consciously.Transcendence is a
process in which, through love and wisdom, we develop enough inner peace and security so as not to be affected by the events around us.
When we are free internally of various emotions,
these same emotions, when expressed by others, do not
affect our minds and emotions. Thus, the greatest protection is purity and love. When we are pure and loving enough, we will be safe from the negative thoughts
of others.
It is also important not to give any thought whatsoever to concepts like the evil eye or black magic. When
we fear or discuss such subjects, we open ourselves
even more to the influence of the negative energies
around us. We would do well not to read books on
such subjects, not to visit mediums, not to discuss or
think about such subjects. There is no power greater
than God. We are the power of God, living in these
physical bodies. We are not vulnerable to any such
harm, unless we ourselves create such a situation with
our belief in such things.
I have met people on the spiritual path who think
more about the devil, and avoiding him, than about
God, and uniting with Him. This is a great mistake.
Our thoughts create their own reality. If we constantly
fear the influence of demons or the devil, we will create
61
GROUP EVOLUTION
We are evolving both as individuals and as a group.
Our evolution depends to a great extent on the evolution of those around us. Few souls have arrived at the
stage of development where their surroundings do not
affect them. You are affecting the evolution of the whole. When you transcend a certain weakness or negativity, you make it a little easier for those around you
to do the same. When you choose to remain stagnant in
your growth process, you hold the others back also.
When you are happy, you add to the happiness of the
world. When you are sad, discontent, pessimistic, you
add to the negativity of the world around you.
You have a great responsibility as a human being in
the process of evolution. You are not only creating negative situations for yourself by your refusal to proceed,
but you are adding to the unhappiness and discontent
of humanity. In this way you are voting, through your thoughts, words and actions, without knowing it,
for antagonism, conflict, war and even various natural
catastrophes such as floods, fire, and earthquakes. Y-
62
TECHNIQUE
Meditation, prayer, reflection on spiritual truths,
caring for the body and mind through exercise, breathing, relaxation and pure food will all help us move
steadily along this evolutionary path. The following
technique will also help you manifest the truth of the
above in your daily life.
Sit with the spine straight and with your eyes open.
Look around at the various beings and objects which
meet your eyes. Do not give any special importance to
any particular person or object. Do not avoid looking at
anything in particular. As you look around, letting y-
our eyes randomly fall on whatever is before you, repeat in your mind over and over, I AM NOT ALONE
IN EXPERIENCING THE EFFECTS OF MY
THOUGHTS ABOUT _______________ .
Then close your eyes and bring various emotional
and mental matters which have been occupying your
mind into focus. Concentrate on them while repeating,
I AM NOT ALONE IN EXPERIENCING THE EFFECTS OF MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS MATTER.
This can be done for one minute with the eyes open
and two minutes with the eyes closed about 4 or 5
times a day.
I would suggest that you do this for about one week
before going on to the next chapter.
63
CHAPTER XVI
64
Our greatest attachment, however, is to our personality. Those who believe they are the personality are
very intent on having that personality recognised and
approved by all whom they meet. They are capable of
sacrificing their health, their happiness and their real
inner needs simply to have the approval of those
around them. They are willing to spend large quantities of time, thought, energy and money in order to get
social affirmation. Others, who have a negative image
of their personalities, will do whatever they can to create rejection and failure for themselves. They often develop self-destructive habits such as drinking, over-eating, taking tranquilizers, narcotics, cigarettes or
indulging in other forms of self-defacement, which undermine their health, happiness and success in life.
Those who are identified with their mental bodies
become obsessed with dogmas, systems, knowledge,
beliefs and "who is right" and "who is wrong". They often evaluate themselves, and others around them, on
the basis of how much a person knows and not at all in
terms of the person's sincerity, love or abilities in other
areas of life. Such people will make decisions concerning the direction of their lives based on these halftruths which they have learned. They will make every
effort to become recognized for their mental abilities,
and will sacrifice many other more essential emotional,
physical and spiritual needs just to get recognition for
their mental abilities from others.
65
66
TECHNIQUE
The following technique will help us to realise the
above-mentioned truths in our daily situations. Sit
with your eyes closed. Let various situations, desires,
questions, decisions and problems flow through your
mind. In each case try to understand what it is that you
have been wanting to happen in relationship with this
problem or situation or decision. Say to yourself, IN
THIS SITUATION INVOLVING ______________, I
WOULD LIKE _____________ TO HAPPEN AND
_________ NOT TO HAPPEN.
CHAPTER XVII

TECHNIQUE
Sit and look around you with your eyes open. As your eyes fall on each object, person or being, repeat inwardly the phrase, THIS ____ EXISTS FOR THE LIBERATION OF SPIRIT FROM MATTER. Do this with
each and every object which comes to your attention.
Do not avoid any object or being whatsoever, and do
not concentrate specifically on anything in particular.
Include everything impartially with the same emphasis. Do this for about one minute, then close your eyes
and bring to mind various life situations both pleasant
and unpleasant, such as relationships, ambitions, efforts, plans, problems, joys, activities etc. After each situation which goes into your mind, repeat the phrase,
THIS ____ EXISTS FOR THE LIBERATION OF SPIRIT FROM MATTER. Do this with everything which

CHAPTER XVIII
I AM DETERMINED TO SEE
70
ENLIGHTENMENT LIBERATION
SELF-REALISATION
Let us examine three words which we use to describe this process. The words themselves hold clues as
to the process. Enlightenment hints at the bringing of
light to a situation which is lacking in light. In this case
we are talking about our minds and our ability to see
and perceive the truth of our reality. We are living in
darkness. We do not see the truth because there is not
enough light in our minds. The mind is covered by a
veil of ignorance which does not allow the divine light
of the soul to shine through. This veil is basically made
up of our thoughts, desires, beliefs and habitual forms
of feeling and functioning, in which we act, pretty
much unconsciously and mechanically, like robots. We
can bring light to our minds with techniques such as
prayer, meditation, advanced breathing exercises and
reflection on spiritual truths. Silence of the tongue and
mind are essential for this process. One who wants to
arrive at this state of clarity will have to learn to speak
and think much less, and to empty his mind of its usually mundane contents, in order to experience the divinity of each situation.
Liberation implies the process of getting free from
some type of limitation. From this word we can understand that man is imprisoned in his own mind, and its
limited and distorted thoughts about himself and the
world. These beliefs limit his perception, understanding, decisions, expression and movements. He limits
himself and then cries out that his rights have been
limited. Most of us are our own greatest suppressors.
We feel that others are suppressing us, when the key to
our prison lies in our own hands. We, either are not
aware that only we are able to set ourselves free, or
know it and are afraid to do it. Freedom is often scary.
There is responsibility. There is self-dependency. There
is no one to blame any more for our problems. The key
to our freedom is the transformation of our beliefs, and
our breaking free from our habitual ways of thinking
and functioning.
The word self-realisation implies that we have another self which we have not yet realised. It implies
that we have within us abilities, powers and talents
which we have not yet realised. It also means that we
have not manifested them here on the earth level in our
daily lives. It hints at the fact that we are not yet complete in our perception of ourselves, nor in expressing our full potential. This underestimation of our be-
TECHNIQUE
The following exercise will help us to be even more
conscious of our desire to break the veils of ignorance.
Remember every half hour to stop and silently repeat this phrase 3 times: I WANT TO SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY. Do this regardless of what you are doing. Make signs to remind yourself. If you have an
alarm on your watch, set it. If your watch beeps on the
hour, remember at least on the hour to look around
you and mentally repeat the phrase, I WANT TO SEE
THINGS DIFFERENTLY.
Independently of this, 5 times a day stop for a
longer period of 2 minutes (only two minutes), and
look around you randomly letting your eyes fall impartially on whatever is before you. Start with the
phrases: I SEE ONLY THE PERISHABLE. NOTHING
I SEE WILL LAST. NOTHING I SEE IS REAL. I AM
DETERMINED TO SEE DIFFERENTLY.
Then as your eyes fall on various objects and beings
repeat silently to yourself, I AM DETERMINED TO
SEE THIS PERSON, SITUATION, EVENT, ATTRIBUTE DIFFERENTLY. Repeat this every time your eyes focus on a particular thing. Do not avoid repeating it for certain objects or beings. Be impartial.
Desire to see everything differently.
Do this for about one week before going on to the
next chapter. Continue all your other spiritual practices
as usual. This does not replace your other spiritual efforts. It helps bring their results into your daily life.
71
CHAPTER XIX
If I could see the truth, I would experience a continual sense of bliss, love and unity. I want that more
than anything else in the world. Why then do I keep
forgetting that that is my strongest desire?, Habit.
In the previous chapter we were given the technique of repeating every half hour the phrase, I AM
DETERMINED TO SEE DIFFERENTLY. I hope that
most of you managed to remember to do this so frequently. Perhaps some of you forgot for hours at a
time, and perhaps even for a whole day. Is it that you
do not want enlightenment, that you do not want selfknowledge or self-realisation? For some, of course, this
desire has not yet become strong. In others, however, it
has become an important part of their lives. And yet
they forget. Why?
The answer again is habit. It is our greatest enemy,
our greatest obstacle. Habitual thinking and acting patterns occur when we get lost in a mechanical way of
functioning. We may not be actually conscious of what
we are doing or whether we really want to be doing it
or thinking that. In what situations do you tend to lose
your awareness?. While talking with friends or family?
While reading or at work, at social events, while eating,
driving the car, working, shopping, while making love,
washing the dishes, paying bills, sleeping or while
dreaming? Im sure that you can add to this many other times in which you tend to lose your awareness of
the spiritual truths which you believe in. At these moments you forget your desire to see the truth.
Our goal is, however, precisely to see all these mundane activities in a different light. To see them all as
what they really are, and not what we have been programmed to believe they are. Do not be discouraged if
you have not been able to remember. Until now it is
natural. It is our present state of evolution. Make a new
effort now adding the words, ABOVE ALL, and replace the wordsTHINGS DIFFERENTLY with the
words THE TRUTH to our phrase. ABOVE ALL I
WANT TO SEE THE TRUTH. Remember to repeat
this as many times a day as you can. Every half hour if
possible. Ask inwardly to be able to see the truth of
each situation. Make signs with these phrases written,
and place them in your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom,
car, office and any other place which you find yourself
frequently. Keep trying, without becoming upset when
you forget. Simply analyse why you forgot, what situations make you forget, and try to become more conscious the next time in that situation.
72
WHAT WE SEE
Let us examine again our present means of perception. We presently perceive what we ourselves project
onto objects, beings and situations in our lives. We project what we are programmed to believe about reality.
This programming is based on the false conclusions
which we made as children and in previous lives, as
well as the erroneous beliefs of the society as a whole,
which were imprinted upon our young and impressionable minds. This false perception of reality is a
function of our collective lack of evolution, the lack of
development of our higher intelligence. In this way we
project our mistaken beliefs and expectation, which are
based on erroneous personal and collective perceptions
of the past, onto our perception of the present. Thus
our view of the present is filtered by our past experiences and programmings. In addition to this, we create
what we believe. We also become what we believe. If
we believe that life is difficult, we create a difficult life.
If we believe that we are safe and in the divine flow,
we experience just that.
We can continue creating illusions if we like, but at
some point we will get tired of living in the darkness,
or our illusion will become so negative, that we will be
forced, by the sheer pain of it, to look for ways out.
Then we will desire to wake up, to seethe truth.
Many may fear this change. They may fear that they
may lose what they have. Even if what they have is unpleasant, it is at least familiar. Many people feel safer
with their negative, but familiar, reality (like illness or
conflict, or failure) than with a positive, but unfamiliar,
reality. They are afraid of letting go of the roles or the
games they have been playing for so many years, and
perhaps lifetimes. Many are locked into certain roles
such as the sick one, the weak one who needs help, the
victim, the martyr who always sacrifices for others, the
strong one who has no problems, or the saviour who
will solve everyone elses problems. These roles limit
our perception of reality and are not easily let go of.
73
CHAPTER XX
I AM LOVE
74
in fear and that if they feel our love, their negative tendencies will be disarmed. On the other hand, if they
sense our fear or our aggressive tendencies, they will
act accordingly. We affect others with our attack
thoughts and our fears . Herein lies the great power of
forgiveness. It is essential to forgive everyone (including ourselves) for anything they may have done. Our
refusal to forget the past and forgive is actually doing
much more harm to us than to the other. Our consciousness is burdened with those negative feelings;
we suffer inwardly. Let us bring to mind each and every person towards whom we have negative feelings.
Let us remember exactly why we feel hurt or abused.
Let us realise that life is giving us a lesson. Let us forgive and get free.
Love is the soul-ution. It is our way out of this
unpleasant situation. Let us remember from now on
that we are not the victims of the world that we see;
that we are immortal, invulnerable beings. Let us remember that we are the pure eternal consciousness,
which can never be harmed and can never die. Let us
remember that we are good and deserving; that we are
living out a divine plan and that we are protected by
that plan, so that nothing can ever happen to us without it being for the benefit of our evolution. Some unpleasant events may occur, but they will be unpleasant
only because we interpret them in that way through ignorance and lack of faith and understanding. Let us realise that the one who we really are cannot be attacked.
We are divine consciousness. All this harm, danger,
hurt and protecting goes on at the level of the body and
the personality.
Christ taught us that if we live according to the laws
of our Father, then all our needs will be looked after,
just as He cares for the birds and the lilies of the field.
Few believe this enough to act accordingly. What is the
law of our Father? To love Him with all our heart, soul,
mind and strength, and to love others as we love ourselves. This means to live a life of helping and serving
others in whatever way we are able. If we do this, our
needs will be cared for, and we will have no fears.
St.John writes in his first epistle (4.8), perfect love
drives out all fear. One who has the innocent love of a
little child walks fearlessly in the world, feeling at ease
with everyone, feeling unity with all. Imagine yourself
walking down the street feeling that you love everyone
who passes by. Could you fear someone you truly
loved? Could you have attack thoughts concerning that
person? St.John also said God is love. When we love
we are becoming one with God, one with the creative
power of the universe. Is there any greater form of protection?
Ken Keys, author of THE HANDBOOK TO HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS, says that the law to higher
consciousness is to love everyone unconditionally including yourself. We have already spoken much
about loving ourselves and others unconditionally, but
perhaps this chapter can be a stimulus to look, even
more deeply, into what prevents us from being able to
love ourselves and others unconditionally. Look especially at those factors which involve fear or negative
programming about the others intentions. Look too for
feelings of guilt or unworthiness, which may have been
programmed into you, causing you subconsciously to
expect and fear punishment, suffering, harm or failure.
Such guilty programming will definitely cause us to
get lost in various types of negative thoughts concerning ourselves and others. When we recognise such programmings, we can free ourselves from them by realising that we are good and worthy, that we deserve
respect, health, happiness and success in life. We can also realise the same and wish the same for others. We
can live in love - in fearlessness.
TECHNIQUE
The following technique, in conjunction with your
daily spiritual practices, will aid you in bringing this
type of love and fearlessness into your daily life.
Every half hour stop to look around you and mentally repeat this phrase, I AM NOT THE VICTIM OF
THE WORLD I SEE. I AM LOVE. Repeat this only a
few times and continue what you are doing with a feeling of love.
In addition to doing this twice an hour, stop for
about five minutes and close your eyes and begin to
think about the various unresolved aspects of your life.
Focus on whatever might be causing you tension, worry, bitterness, hurt, anger, fear etc. After each such
thought, repeat the phrase, THE MIND IS CONCERNED ABOUT_____ , or if some fear is involved,
THE MIND IS AFRAID THAT___ WILL HAPPEN
/ NOT HAPPEN. Then after having expressed objectively what the mind is preoccupied with, repeat silently the phrase, I AM NOT THE VICTIM OF THIS SITUATION, I AM LOVE. Keep affirming, I AM LOVE.
This will lead you to the most effective and harmonious reaction and solution to every situation.
Do this for at least one week before going on to the
next chapter.

CHAPTER XXI

GOD AS CONSCIOUSNESS
Consciousness is an excellent metaphor for God.
Take for example our own consciousness. We function
consciously, subconsciously and unconsciously. Unconsciously all our bodily needs are taken care of.
Without thinking, we care for all the needs of the cells
of our bodies, and our cells in turn perform all the
functions so that we may live, think, speak, feel and
act. Our unconscious mind regulates our breathing,
blood flow, digestion and absorption of food elements,
the growth of cells, their destruction, decomposition
and removal from the body, and protects us from foreign bodies. Literally millions of functions take place
without our thinking about them consciously at all. We
are like cells in the body of God. As cells exist within
our bodies, we exist in God. As we care without effort
for our cells, the divine consciousness cares without
any effort whatsoever for its trillions of cells. In the
event of some problem in some part of our body, the
body informs us through a message such as pain or
discomfort, and we attend to it. In the same way, when
a cell in the body of God is having a serious problem
and sends a message in the form of a prayer, the divine
consciousness attends to the situation in the form of Divine Grace. Just as cells are born and die in our body
without our being disturbed, this being essential for

been given and will be given in other chapters. The following technique will help us to bring this truth of
Gods omnipresence into our daily experience.
Many times each hour (at least twice), remember to
look around you and mentally repeat as you perceive
each object, GOD IS IN THIS______. Every time your
eyes fall on any object or being, repeat impartially that
GOD IS IN THIS________.Do not avoid repeating it
for any particular thing, no matter how negative it may
appear to you, and do not focus more on any particular
object either, unless you have difficulty in seeing the
divinity in that.
In addition to that, stop for two minutes 5 or 6 times
a day and close your eyes and observe your various
thoughts. With each thought, repeat the phrase:GOD IS
IN THIS THOUGHT ABOUT______. GOD IS IN MY
MIND. Do this for all thoughts independently of
whether they seem positive or negative to you. Do not
be the judge as to where God is. He is everywhere.
Do not forget to include yourself in repeating this
phrase. Try it now.

CHAPTER XXII

until we learn to empty our minds in meditation, or attract divine grace through constant prayer.
In these two ways, we can unite our personal mind
to the universal mind and experience its divinity. Until
then, it will be useful to repeat this phrase, MY MIND
IS A PART OF GODS. I AM DIVINE. This will help
us to realise this truth at least mentally and emotionally until some day we can experience it as a reality.
This may seem like blasphemy to some who have
been taught that we are sinners and that we do not
have any right to identify with God, that we are not
worthy of contact with God. I believe that this may
have been a useful concept at some point in mans collective evolution, but it cannot be the truth. There are
so many statements in all spiritual texts, including the
Bible, in which mans divinity and unity with God are
verified. The kingdom of heaven is within you, The
body is the temple of the living God. When we identify with this pure part of ourselves, we are much more
likely to act according to those feelings of purity. If we
create sinner-consciousness within ourselves by repeating over and over, I am a sinner, (consciously or
subconsciously), our actions will reflect that state of being identified with sin. This is the reason why Christ
incarnated, to give us the good news that God is ready
to forget and erase any mistakes (sins) which anyone
has made, if he sincerely sees his mistake, asks for forgiveness and tries sincerely not to repeat it. Even if he
repeats it, God is willing to give him another chance.
When Peter asked Christ, How many times must we
forgive someone who transgresses against us, 7 times?
Christ answered, No, seven times seventy times.
That means that Christ expected Peter, a man, to forgive 7 x 70 = 490 times. How many times then is God,
the divine consciousness who is all love, ready to forgive?
Let us let go of all these mistaken ideas of sinfulness
and unworthiness. God is living within us. God is the
universal consciousness which is living through us and
all other beings.
We may think, I am weak, or I am strong, I am depressed, or happy, or peaceful, tired or full of energy,
evil or virtuous. All these describe only the temporary
states which are flowing through the divine vessel of
the mind, just as many types of fluids, pleasant and unpleasant, can flow through a pipe. They are not a part
of the pipe. If there are negative thoughts, or selfish
thoughts, passing through our minds, that is because
81
especially true in spiritual effort. Progress will not always be steady; there will be difficulties which will
throw us back into negative ways of thinking and acting. A common mistake on the part of many spiritual
aspirants is that they lose faith in themselves and believe that they havent made any progress. This is not
true at all. We are always making progress. These temporary setbacks are there to show us where we need to
work a little more, where our weaknesses are. We cannot expect in a few months or years to completely transcend a tendency, which we have been developing for
30, 40 or even hundreds of years, in our series of incarnations.
Let us make the best effort that we can, all the while
accepting and loving ourselves and remembering that
we are a part of God, that we are good and worthy. Let
us remember simultaneously that we are in a state of
evolution, which means that no matter how good we
are, there is room for improvement until we become totally enlightened. Let us work steadily at this process
of purifying our minds, emotions and body so that we
may manifest every day more and more peace, love
and wisdom for those around us. Let us open up our
creative flow and become springs in the spiritual
desert, where thirsty people can come and drink in
comfort, understanding, acceptance, clarity, happiness,
peace and love. Let us realise that we are instruments
of God and pray to become more and more pure instruments every day. This will happen.
When you pray or meditate, start off with this small
communication with God, as you feel or imagine God.
God, I place myself in Your hands. Change me in any
way which is suitable to Your plan. Remove from my
character anything which is not in line with Your will.
Add to me whatever is missing so that I may more fully express Your love, wisdom and peace through my
thoughts, words and deeds.
TECHNIQUE
The technique for this week is to repeat mentally

CHAPTER XXIII
MY HOLINESS IS MY SALVATION
What do we mean by the word holiness? What is
holy? We usually use this word to describe something
which serves as a connecting link, or a channel, for
communication between the physical and spiritual. We
infer something, which is somehow beyond the physical plane, but is still in contact with it and serves as a
channel for the flow of divine energies into our physical reality. We talk about holy places such as churches,
temples and places in nature where there is evidence of
greater spiritual energy flowing. This evidence may be
in the form of healings, or visions, moving icons, or
other miraculous phenomena which take place there.
83
84
he has done with his mind and his power. From the
pyramids of Egypt and South America to the satellites
and computers of today, from the paintings of Michaelangelo to the music of Beethoven (not to limit that
which is wonderful only to these few things mentioned; the list is endless). Man has created civilisations, which we are not even aware of, as well as arts,
sciences, philosophies, religions, political systems, cities, transportation systems and everything else on
this earth which is not a pure product of nature. But
man is part of nature. Just as a bridge created by
beavers is considered natural, so is a bridge created by
man. Just as the songs of the birds are products of nature, so are the songs of man. Man is an instrument of
nature just as all other beings are. He is, however, a
self-conscious aspect of nature, who can look at himself, observe himself and correct himself. He is also, to
some extent, more free, than the other beings in nature,
to flow with the general laws of nature or to ignore
them. Many times men all over the world ignore the
simple laws of nature and act egotistically and at the
expense of the whole, creating great imbalances in the
forces of nature. These actions all have their reaction
and man is paying for them today in the forms of fires,
earthquakes, polluted air, water and food - all of which
are destroying his health and happiness.
This freedom to live and work in harmony with nature, or not, was necessary in order for man to make
these mistakes and learn from them, so that he could
then become a conscious and willing abider of the divine law. All the other species are following the law
because they have no conscious choice. Men and women all over the world today, who have learned from
their mistakes, are choosing to consciously and willingly become instruments of the divine plan here on earth.
They are giving up their needs for personal riches and
accumulation of material objects. They are letting go of
the need for affirmation, through fame and social success, and they are dedicating their lives to getting in
touch with the divinity within themselves and expressing it in their own unique way. Each is finding the way
in which he, or she, will offer a little more healing energy to the world. Each is caring more for others who
need help. Each is seeking to become a transformer of
spiritual energy into useful actions, which better the
quality of life in the ambient society. Just as the planets
absorb the energy of the sun and transform it into useful sugars and starches, amino acids, proteins and oils
in the fruits, vegetables and grains which we eat, these
beings absorb spiritual energy through their prayer
and meditation and loving connection with God and
all beings, and then transform this energy into actions
which raise the level of consciousness of the beings
around them.
You who are reading this book are one such person.
If you have not yet realised this, you soon will. You
will begin to desire it. If you havent already, you will
soon begin to desire to be a useful instrument in the divine plan here on earth. You will begin to realise that
the greatest happiness is to fulfill this role, however it
may manifest for you, for each will serve and help in
his own way. When you feel this desire, pray to be
used, to be a pure instrument, which is always attuned
to the guiding voice of the Master who is using this instrument. Pray to be free of ego and ignorance and to
be a source of light and love to all who come in contact
with you. You are capable of this. You are divine. You
are the universal consciousness in all beings.
Together we are creating the reality which we are
experiencing. Together we must transform it into
something more harmonious, more joyful. For this reason, it is useful for us to join with others who have the
same goals and beliefs. Our own personal transformation will be much facilitated. There will be less chance
of getting caught up in some of the traps on the spiritual path, especially the trap of spiritual ego, which occurs more often when we work alone. Also, our efforts
on the practical, social level will be much more productive if we are many and united.
We are divine essence temporarily manifesting itself in these bodies; let us remember that when we feel
tired, weak, unable, fearful, incapable, hurt, bitter or
upset. Nothing can stop us. There is nothing our divinity cannot do, if we do not block it with doubt and
limiting beliefs. We are each a hole in the curtain of the
material world through which divine light is flowing.
Let that light flow. Do not get caught up in thoughts of
weakness or hopelessness. There is nothing your divinity cannot do. Start to repeat this frequently in relation
to various situations, which you would like to change
for the better. Remember, however, that divinity, or
holiness, can never function towards the harm of any
being. Holiness by its very definition is that which affects the whole in such a way that all benefit. Thus, the
divine consciousness within us will not make miracles
which are only for our personal satisfaction or for control over others. Our higher mind will decide, in each
case or problem, what is best for the whole, for there is
only One Being which is expressing itself through all
these forms. We are one collective consciousness. It is
impossible for that divine power to harm any aspect of
its own being, thus we can have faith that all we need
to do is let our love consciousness envelop any situation to do its work, without our programmed mind intervening and deciding on what results this blessing
should bring about. It is best not to specifically imagine
what we would like to happen, but simply to bless
each situation and let our divine consciousness mani-
fest the results, which are best for us and all beings
concerned. In some cases, and especially until our spiritual sight is restored, it may seem that our divinity is
not manifesting itself, or that it is making mistakes.
This is not the case; it is simply that we have a specific
idea in our mind as to what the best solution for this
situation would be, but that idea is the result of our
limited and distorted view of things. Trust in your spiritual power. Bless every situation and, sooner or later,
you will see that everything is perfect. There are no
mistakes.
The power of God is flowing through all, independently of how much it shows. The same current of electricity is flowing through all wires, independently of
whether one bulb can transform it into 200 watts of
light or only 25 watts. The power available to each bulb
is the same. Each person has the same potential connection to this God power. It is our job to increase the
amount of flow that we can manifest. This will be done
through our regular employment of the various spiritual practices. The following technique, in conjunction
with your spiritual practices, will expedite this process.
TECHNIQUE
Here we have four sessions of five minutes each to
practice daily. Sit with spine straight and eyes closed
and repeat this phrase silently a number of times,
THERE IS NOTHING MY DIVINITY CANNOT DO.
Then bring to your mind various problems or situations which concern you. Focus on each one separately
and for each, repeat, IN THE SITUATION INVOLVING_______ IN WHICH I SEE MYSELF, THERE IS
NOTHING MY DIVINITY CANNOT DO, BECAUSE
THE POWER OF GOD LIES WITHIN IT.
You may choose to use the third person in expressing this, for example, IN THE SITUATION INVOLVING (here you place the theme) IN WHICH (here you
place your name) SEES HIMSELF/ HERSELF, THERE
IS NOTHING WHICH HIS/HER DIVINITY CANNOT
DO, BECAUSE THE POWER OF GOD LIES WITHIN
HIM/HER.
Or you may prefer the first person plural, since
there is only one universal consciousness which is
flowing through all beings. IN THE SITUATION INVOLVING _______ IN WHICH WE SEE OURSELVES,
THERE IS NOTHING WHICH OUR DIVINITY CANNOT DO BECAUSE THE POWER OF GOD LIES
WITHIN US.
Use the phrase which suits you four times a day for
about five minutes, focusing on the situations which
are concerning you. Use your own wording if you find
it more effective. Do not dictate what your blessing
must do. Do not make any distinction between your
problems, or the problems of others, or of the society,
85

CHAPTER XXIV
Let us remember often that our real parent is the universal being and that we are blessed and divine. This
will help us to act in accordance with our true high nature. Let us repeat many times each day in all situations, I AM A BLESSED CHILD OF GOD. I AM HAPPY, PEACEFUL, LOVING AND CONTENT. I AM
CALM, QUIET, ASSURED AND CONFIDENT. I
SPREAD LIGHT AND LOVE TO THOSE AROUND
ME. I DESERVE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS. I LOVE
ALL BEINGS REGARDLESS OF THEIR APPEARANCE AND BEHAVIOUR. I AM IN HARMONY
WITH THE UNIVERSE.
Make up your own phrases, which express the specific qualities which you want to cultivate each day.
You may prefer to express the phrase in the first person
plural, WE ARE ALL BLESSED CHILDREN OF GOD.
WE ARE LOVING, PEACEFUL, HAPPY, HEALTHY
AND IN HARMONY WITH THE UNIVERSE. Repeat
these phrases silently many times each hour of every
day.
Be creative in your use of these affirmations and be
regular. Make signs and notes for yourself and place
them around the house, in the car and at your place of
work. Make a cassette with these truths recorded on it
and play it to yourself in deep relaxation, or just before
you wake up in the morning (with the help of a time
switch which will start the cassette player). Be creative
and resourceful in your attempt to liberate your mind
from its false and limited programming.
We are all children of God. We are brothers and sisters. We are one family. Let us try to feel that and act in
that way. Let us care for the problems of our brothers
and sisters, no matter what their colour, religion, nationality or political affiliation. Let us overcome all
these superficial factors which separate us and realise
that, beneath the various clothings and appearances,
we are all the same. We are all afraid; we all lack security and self-affirmation. We all want to be loved and
to love. We want to belong; we want to feel that we are
recognised, respected and cared for. We want to be on
friendly terms with everyone. We want harmony; we
want peace; we want to be creative and useful. We
want to help; we want to be part of the universal family of humanity. We want to be close to God and we
want knowledge of our true self. We want to be liberated from this sense of limitation and vulnerability. We
want to grow into our real Divine Self.
Let us take brave steps forward. Let us break free

CHAPTER XXV
GOD IS WHEREVER I AM
IF GOD IS EVERYWHERE,
WHY DONT I FEEL HIM ?
The atmosphere in which you are now sitting, as
you read this book, is full of radio and TV waves from
all over the world. If you had a radio and turned it on,
you would be amazed at how many different vibrational realities there are in that one space in which
you are sitting. If you have shortwave bands, then you
can pick up realities which are coming from New York, London, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Sydney. Yet at
this moment, without the radio, you do not perceive
anything whatsoever of these realities. The universal
consciousness is much more subtle than these subtle
radio waves; these are very gross in comparison to this
consciousness, which is more subtle than any form of
energy known to man.
At this moment you are travelling in an easterly direction at about 1000 miles an hour as the earth spins
on its axis. At the same time, you are travelling around
the sun at a velocity of about 66,000 miles, as the earth
revolves around the sun (even though it seems that the
sun is moving around us). You are also moving around
the centre of the galaxy at a speed of 500,000 miles an
hour, as the whole solar system revolves around the
centre of the galaxy. This galaxy is, at the same time,
speeding, through space, away from other galaxies at
velocities approaching, and in some cases exceeding,
the speed of light. In other words, you are speeding
through space at incredible velocities. Are you aware
of this? Or does it seem as though you are sitting still
as you read this book? Obviously our senses are not
very sharp. How could such dull senses perceive such
a subtle reality as God?
Until we evolve to a state of inner enlightenment, in
89
90
mony and purity by regular practice of proper diet, exercises for the body and breath, deep relaxation, positive thought projection, prayer and meditation.
The third step is to reprogram our minds from our
old limited belief systems, in which we identify with
our bodies and personalities, so that we may eventually identify with our own true divine self. The various
questionnaires, which were presented in the beginning
of this book, will help you to realise which specific limiting thoughts must be overcome. The various spiritual
truths and phrases presented in the later chapters, if repeated as instructed, will then replace those limiting
beliefs with these new truths, which will open your
eyes to the truth of your divine nature and the divinity
of all things.
As we begin to see the truth, we will realise that all
things and beings are equally divine in their essence.
We will not limit God to churches or icons or special
holy places, but will begin to feel His presence in all
people and places. We will begin to radiate that purity
and peace which small children do. This vibration of
purity and non- violence will help others to let go of
defence mechanisms and egotistical tendencies. They
will approach us wanting contact and to open their
hearts. They too will want to liberate the child within
them. They too will want to feel God within themselves and everywhere they go. Its catching like a disease, this sense of ease. A sense of ease is just as contagious as disease.
Let us remember frequently every day, GOD IS
WHEREVER I GO, or, GOD IS WHEREVER I AM.
In this way, we remember that we have a friend. who
has the whole universe in His hands; a friend who is
all-powerful and all-loving; a friend who cannot stop
loving us, no matter how many sins, or, in other
words, mistakes we may make. He is always ready to
forgive and give us another chance. If we do not feel
His presence it is because we have cut ourselves off,
because we do not feel worthy or are simply not interested and not paying any attention to His presence. We
are probably too focused on the various sources of
pleasure and pain which surround us.
You can start your daily meditation with this
phrase, GOD IS ALWAYS WITH ME, or, GOD IS
WITH ME, IN ME NOW. Imagine yourself performing your various activities, which you need to perform
that day, and doing them with a continual sense of the
presence of God within you, guiding you. Imagine
both simple and difficult activities, new ones and old
ones, pleasant ones and unpleasant ones. We want to
bring this awareness of the presence of God into every
moment. After imagining yourself functioning in life
with this continual awareness of God within and
around you, let your mind be empty and concentrate
