Data collection methods

From where or whom we collect data?


1. Primary data:
Primary data can be collected from the following sources:
Internet:
On internet we see different blogs , chat rooms, Facebook, twitter etc. these all links
provide us the primary data about our concern objectives.
Individuals:
Through individuals we can take opinions randomly through questioners. This also
provides us the primary data of our subject of study.
Focus groups:
In focus groups we conduct surveys through questioners among some specific group of
people.
Panels:
There are two types of panels:

Static panel:

The panel in which the data remains the same is static data. If the data is collected
from our class this year and it is again collected from the same class next year then it
is static panel.

Dynamic panel:

The panel in which the data doesnt remains the same is dynamic panel. If the data is
collected from our class this year and then collected from the other class next year
then it is dynamic panel.
2. Secondary data:
Secondary data can be collected through:

Anything published:
The data which is collected through different books, articles, publications is secondary
data. It is necessary to mention the reference of the source from which the data is taken.
How we collect data?
1. Interviews:
Seeking of information of one party from another party is known as interview.
There are three categories of interviews:
Unstructured interviews:
The interview in which the researcher dont know how much and how to take information
from interviewee. No time period is fixed. No proper pattern of questions.
Structured interviews:
The interview in which the researcher know how much and how to take information from
interviewee. It has some specific time period and having some pattern of questions.
Semi-structured interviews:
The interview in which some questions are preplanned and some are asked randomly is
known as semi-structured interviews.
Types of interviews:
1. Personal interviews:
A personal interview survey, also called as a face-to-face survey, is a survey method that
is utilized when a specific target population is involved. The purpose of conducting a
personal interview survey is to explore the responses of the people to gather more and
deeper information.
2. Telephonic interviews:
Employers usually use telephone interviews when they receive a lot of applications or are
recruiting for a lot of positions. Its a way of narrowing down the candidates into a
number that it is possible for them to interview face-to-face.
3. Computer assisted interviews:

Computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) is an interviewing technique in which


the respondent or interviewer uses a computer to answer the questions. These are mostly
structured interviews.
