Village
Hello everyone,
What a relief Christmas is over and the 2016 New Year
has begun.
For visitors welcome. Have fun enjoying our
beaches and village but BHA would like to stress
community safety. We encourage you all to stay safe
and look after each other this summer and especially
have patience as cyclists, skateboarders, prams, cars
and pedestrians mix and mingle during the holiday
period.
Please lock your houses & cars. Do not leave your keys
on the hall table or in view. Call 000 if you are concerned.
Be very aware of strange cars and trucks in your street.
Get to know your neighbours.
The BHA Committee has made a preliminary
submission to the Victorian Electoral Commission
review of City of Greater Geelong council structure.
We supported the following:
a multi- councillor structure totaling 11 councillors;
the division of the City of Greater Geelong into fewer but
larger wards with a change of ward boundaries from the
current 12 to 4 wards. 3x three-councillor wards 1x twocouncillor ward; Barwon Heads joining a new Bellarine
ward;
an urgent review of the present system of election of the
mayor.
We look forward to the preliminary report which we
understand will be released on the 20th January, and to
participating further in the discussion on the evolution of
a new structure for the City of Greater Geelong. We
anticipate that a new structure for representation will
provide the basis for fair and equal representation and
also enable a funding structure that ensures that
ratepayers money is equally distributed. We encourage
all CoGG ratepayers to inform themselves and get
involved.
Whats happening with the Pedestrian Safety
project? The BHA Committee is pleased with the final

plans of this project and commends the Steering

Committee for its work throughout the various stages of
the projects development. At this stage no construction
works will be conducted before the busy
summer period to avoid disruption and the roadwork
'look' during summer.
To review photo montages of the proposed works see
the BHA website at www.barwonheadsassociation.com
Traffic Management in Flinders Pde and Ozone Rd.
In conjunction with VicRoads, Council has plans for
possible short term and then permanent improvements
for LATM works in Flinders Pde and Ozone Roads. This
is to stop cars using these streets as rat runs much to
the concern of the residents of those streets.
These plans involve detailing parking bays, not only to
help parking, but narrow the streets so traffic will slow.
They also involve an extension to the 40kph speed limit
in Hitchcock Ave down to Ozone Rd and time limited
parking for northern end of retail precinct. The BHA
website has a more detailed report from CoGG Traffic
Engineer David Briggs for your further information.
We plan to respond to David after this Mondays
meeting.
The newly formed Bellarine Community Safety
Group.
Along with other community associations from
Portarlington, Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff, St Leonards,
Indented Heads, Ocean Grove and Drysdale, BHA has
been asked to represent the Barwon Heads community
on this newly formed group. It is chaired by The Hon
Lisa Neville our state MP and co-chaired by Tess Walsh
Assistant Commissioner, Western Region Victoria
Police. The primary purpose of the group is to develop
community crime prevention strategies to address
perceptions of community safety through
communication and engagement with local police. It will
work on crime prevention strategies to assist with
specific crime types in particular areas and peak times.
And MYKI - Why cant we buy a myki card on the
Bellarine? It is quite absurd that there are no outlets
selling our much loved travel cards in either Barwon

Where Did 2015 Go?

Well, by now its 2016, and I hope that you
all had a very happy, SAFE Christmas,
and that 2016 will be a most satisfactory
year for you and yours.
Most of the Op Shop volunteers just cannot believe that
2015 just flew by! Ive been very busy trying to arrange
rosters for enough volunteers to open each area of the
Shop during the five busy days of five frantic weeks
during school holidays.

We open Tuesday till Saturday, but always

just from 10 .a.m. till 1 p.m. Im sure the
town will be packed as usual. Thank God
for the Pedestrian Crossing in Hitchcock
Ave.
Last summer my impatient son waited more than twenty

I hope that when I next write to you, that I will be able to

report that we have air-conditioning in our first garage,
called the Sorting-Room. Being smaller than the second
garage, (Show-room), this uninsulated space becomes
SO unbearably hot on any day when the temperature
rises above thirty degrees, that we have to shut it down.
We may still have to close the front, north-facing doors,
on days when a hot north wind is blowing, but volunteers
will be able to work, and customers enter through the
side door, as we need the stock inside to sell.
I am so grateful to the Property Management team who
have organised this project, and to a generous local
tradie who has offered to help dig the trench needed
for electrical cabling.
As always, we have so much in our shop....super books,
pictures, toys, kitchen-ware, and of course, SO much
clothing, that we will be having Snap Sales as
necessary, to clear things. Our recent $1 dollar any
garment sale was surprisingly successful. I heard later
that many townspeople passed the message on to any
friends they met, and the number of people who came
along meant that despite my fears, we made enough
money to justify it.
We do have huge quantities of goods left under our

veranda near the two areas where goods are sorted.

I have certainly asked many times for kind donors to
remember that we older volunteers REALLY struggle
with overloaded boxes...particularly boxes of books or
magazines.
I am also very upset if, as I struggle with a bag for of
what looks like clothing, I hear an ominous
crunching/tinkling as I put down the bag!
If crockery is at the bottom of the bag, it will be tip
material by the time weve got it in!
It really helps if donors separate goods into clothing OR
other things. Then we sometimes have an equally
maddening problem when people load a plastic bag with
such a heavy load of clothing that as soon as it is picked
up, it tears apart. It is so frustrating to have to find boxes
or bags and painstakingly transfer each article, piece by
piece into a replacement.
The volunteers who willingly give their time to raise the
money which is so gratefully received by the church and
local groups, (see the list of donations near our Main
Shop door), would so appreciate donations that have
been packed with some care.
On this note, once again I need to thank all our
volunteers, donors, and customers. Its certainly a
difficult job working at the Shop, but a most gratifying
one in most ways.
Take care on the roads, and on the beach.
God bless you all,
Helen Edwards
Shop Supervisor

The Sonus
Ensemble

Our final concert for 2015 was the fabulous trio of Ben Castle,
violin, Regina Thomae, piano, & Brighid Mantelli, flute with a very
appreciative audience! They began with a gentle introduction of an Aria trio by
Jaque Ibert, a French composer (1890-1962) & followed with a trio Sonata in A minor
with 4 movements by Georg Philipp Telemann, a German composer (1681-1767). Next
Ben performed from JSBachs 6 pieces for solo violin in the Italian style, the Adagio from
G minor sonata, which he chose for us as he really loves it!
Ben introduced the next piece by saying that Mozart never wrote a dud piece even
when composing for his least favourite instrument- the flute! (the early flute was difficult
to keep in tune!) The Sonata in F Major KV 13 had 3 movements for flute & piano. Violin
& piano performed Johannes Brahms (German composer b.1833 & died in Vienna in
1897) Hungarian Dance no.6 which was absolutely brilliant!
Regina found some arrangements from piano solos by Claude Debussy (French 18621918) arranged for other instruments such as flute & violin. They chose 2 for piano &
flute & the third was for piano & violin, composed by Debussy as a parody to be even
slower than the fashionable slow waltz popular in France in the early 20th century!
They chose Astor Piazzolla, Argentiian (1921-1992) & performed 2 trios: Los Pargaros
perdidos & Libertango in his typical tango style which has elements of jazz influences
& great fun! Jean Sibelius (Finnish composer;1865-1957) was chosen by Regina as her
students had performed it so well in the Scandinavian style & she really loved it! Then a
violin & piano Sonata in G Major by a young Mozart, choosing the allegro movement
which was full of life!
They chose to finish with Antonio Vivaldi (b. Venice & died in Vienna in 1741) , a
Concerto in G minor with 3 movements written for any instruments that could play in C
Major worked beautifully for their trio. They gave us a very professional & generous
Bakers Dozen; 13 pieces on December 13th! Their concert was a brilliant end to a
wonderful year of varied musical genres!

Our 2016 calendar is filling up rapidly with an exciting mixture of performers & a few new
ideas such as a Twilight fund-raiser in March & joining the Festival of the Sea with
musical entertainment in the John Green Tent. Another different entertainment will be
The Man from Ironbark in April & Marvellous Music in May plus many more & varied
concerts for the rest of the year! Keep an eye on Talking Heads for the latest updates!
I would like to thank our energetic committee for their continued support & ideas & also
thank Natale Lewington for her supreme efforts with the Chorale & thank most sincerely
Hazel Mitchell who sadly is retiring from her fantastic role as accompanist since the
beginning!

Have you noticed the new shops in Barwon

Heads? I asked Ann from Move Athletica to
tell us the philosophy behind her lovely new
space...
I started my working life in retail and have a love of
fashion. Right now its about fashion that is comfy and
inspires me and others to move everyday
3 years ago I left a senior corporate position that was
all about enabling change in large organisations, to
teach Yoga full time. This enabled me to deepen my
own practice and share yoga with many yogis across
Melbourne and Geelong.
Creating a little space in my life also allowed me to
explore my passion for active wear, and the concept of
Move Athletica was born. The name was inspired by
lots of things...we are building (moving) to Barwon
Heads, I love active wear that moves with your body
and hence why the garments and fabrics I choose
must always feel good on. I believe in moving every
day regardless of what form this takes in order to stay
healthy, however Yoga is my passion. Trying to live by
the ethos of move with life rather than against it
allows life to reveal itself to me.
Move Athletica is a lifestyle concept boutique. By day
we showcase the latest in Premium Leisurewear and
Active wear to inspire healthy living and each morning
and night we transform into a Yoga space for our
clients to move the body and explore the mind. Our
yoga class are designed for all levels and no
memberships are required.

COMMUNITY ARTS GARDEN

Summer in the Gardens .
Plotholders have ben busy over the past months planting a wide variety of vegetables and
some of these will be soon ready for harvest. These include various varieties of tomatoes,
eggplant, beans, cucumber and capsicums to name a few. To prevent moisture loss (over what
is forecast to be a very hot summer) plots have been well mulched. We have a number of new
plotholders who have joined our garden community over the past few months and we warmly
welcome Jen, Mimi, Beth and Mandy & Colin. We currently now have 22 plotholders with all
plots being taken but If you would like to go on the waiting list please contact us and we can let
you know when one becomes available.
The fruit trees are laden with fruit and the apricot tree has kilos of fruit hanging from its branches.
Once these are ripened they will be shared amongst our members, It will be terrific to harvest
quinces once they are ready to maybe make the delicious quince paste although I do have
some still in the fridge from last year's harvest.
In the polyhouse Our new innovative experiment of establishing garden beds in the
polyhouse has worked well and the tomatoes are loving the ideal conditions. I picked my first
large, ripe tomato a couple of days ago. What a treat to have a fresh homegrown ripe tomato so
early in the season. Basil, eggplant and cucumbers are also growing nicely and becoming
ready for the picking. Our watering system automatically comes on twice a day for just a few
minutes each time.

Community Arts Garden

New Projects
Ideas for new projects are always being put forward and there is no shortage of what can be
done to continue to beautify our community arts garden. Some projects that are in the pipeline
include the following:
Relocation of children's play area: Currently plans are underway for relocation of the
children's play area to the rear of the polyhouse where a new sandpit will be established. We
were recently donated a small dingy and this will be planted up into a children's garden.
New small storage shed: Designs are being looked at for a new storage shed to
accommodate equipment including various items belonging to our Beekeeping Group and
Sustainability Group. Both groups have had to house a lot of their equipment in their members'
homes which hasn't been ideal.
Eastern fence vertical garden: During 2016 we hope to erect a new frame along the eastern
fenceline so that a wide variety of climbing plants can happily climb towards to the sky. This will
also add an attractive backdrop to that part of the garden.

The Garden Room. (the portable located at the rear of the gardens). Our garden room
is available for hire for a nominal fee. Currently we have various groups using the room
including a yoga group and also a chlldren's music group. It is a very pleasant room to use for
meetings. The room is carpeted and tea making facilities are available. If you would like to book
the portable please contact Committee member Russell on 0439 061 475.

Visitors to the Garden:

It is always rewarding to be able to show groups our delightful Community Arts Garden.
Recently we had a small group from the Colac Sustainability Group visit for a tour this group
had also visited some years back and were amazed at the continued development of the
gardens. Students and a teacher from a school in Whittington also recently visited and learnt
about growing vegetables. The children at that school are already establishing their own
garden and constructing vegetables boxes out of used pallets which they are selling to raise
money to buy plants a very worthy cause and project for the students. Children from the
Barwon Heads Bop Bop Karrong kindergarten also had a lovely visit along with teachers and
parents.
We welcome groups who would like to visit and learn about the gardens. If you contact us we
can arrange for a committee member to also be present to provide further background
information about the gardens. An email can be sent to: info@bhartsgarden.com

So, Ive dragged my 3 small ones to local

swimming lessons since before they could
walk.
For over 10 years Ive done the pool run.
For more than half of that, I sat semi-squat
in the water wearing nothing but speedos
and goosebumps. I used the kiosk as a
place of bribery rather than a place of
nourishment. Fried incentive got funkytrunks on bums and googles on heads. It
has been easier as my smalls have grown
older. Yet even though they can walk in and
even most times, walk out by themselves;
Heaven forbid they carry their own towel.
Part of closing the year is preparing for
the new one. So yesterday, I asked my
small ones which after-school activities
they wanted to pursue. Swimming is
non-negotiable. We live on the coast
and the beach is our backyard. And in
great marketing prowess, all the swim
teachers keep telling me about the
natural ability my smalls seem to have
received as a stroke-technique gift of
Grace. It makes me feel strong in my
own gene pool.
As I believe their aquatic talent is
directly descendant from me.

as well as creating a love for the after lesson

play. My eldest wise one is 10 and as she is
apparently exceeding in her natural ability,
she started squad swimming last term.
Rather than a lesson where you swim a
couple of laps and have a fair slog of play she now just puts her googles on and her
head down. Keeping left, she follows the
black line up and down and up and down.
Chasing the flipping feet of the person in
front. Kicking madly away from the person
behind. Theres no playing. Theres no
talking. Theres just swimming laps up and
down and up and down.
Head down, she keeps left and follows the
black line.
With all the other 10 year olds who
apparently share her natural gift.
I dont want to do swimming. Its boring.

be. This reflection gives us space to see

what we have learned, to see where we
have grown and in what direction we feel
drawn to move towards. For many of us, the
new year offers opportunity to take a break.
To lift our head and move away from the left
of the black line that we can unconsciously
follow. So that in taking a step back from
lifes linear routine and structure, we can
better discern whether the flipping feet in
front are worth chasing. Or whether we need
to kick so hard from the person behind.
And whether we have made any time this
year to let ourselves play at all.
When we give ourselves permission to see
beyond the ongoing black line, we offer
ourselves time for a little head
housecleaning. We come to understand that
our thoughts inherently shape our reality and
that self awareness is not just how well you
understand your emotions in this moment but how you understand your tendencies
over time. In stepping off the black line, we
learn to be responsive rather than reactive.
We start to act rather than to react. We
remember to fully live our lives rather than
just cope with them.
I looked at my eldest wise one
yesterday, her childhood slowing
closing and her womanhood just
begun, and I hugged her hard. We
agreed that wed wag squad for a bit.
Wed go back to playing together at the
local pool. It means I have to get back
into my speedos and my goosebumps.
But its so we can play together. She
can practice her mermaid kicks and I
can practice my somersaults.
While trying not to get water up my
nose.

RipViewSwimClassic 2016
The 28th Rip View Swim Classic ( Season 2015 / 2016 ) is locked in for Sunday 3rd January 2016, with a start of
12:00pm - midday, for the first wave of the 1.4km swim and 11:00am for our inaugural 3.8km swim .
This 1.4km open water swim is one of the three big swims on the Victorian Summer Calendar and a favourite especially for those new to open water swimming. The
location at Port Phillip Heads makes our swim totally dependent on low tide, and we carefully select the most suitable date between Christmas and the Pier to Pub.
The 28th event swim, will start at the Santa Casa (Nun's) Beach off Henry Street Queenscliff at 11:00am and hug the Lonsdale Bight until it joins up with the start of the
1.4km swim at the Spring's Beach. It then follows the traditional course to the finish line, opposite the Point Lonsdale Front Beach Shops.
Come along and support this major fundraiser for the Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club at arguably Point Lonsdale's biggest annual event.

Lateral Flexion poses are side-stretching

poses. In todays society, we do most of our
physical movements by moving
backwards and forwards. We need to take
the time to stretch the body sideways.
When we stretch sideways, we are not only creating
space between each vertebra as we lengthen the spine,
we are also stretching the muscles between the ribs and
the torso on one side of the body. At the same time, we
are contracting the muscles on the other side of the body
to stabilise the stretch. Therefore, it is important to
practise Lateral Flexion poses on both sides to create an
even balance. As always, it is important to incorporate the
use of the Bandhas (core strength). We support the lower

back by engaging the muscles of Mula Bandha and

support the midriff, by engaging the muscles of
Uddiyana Bandha. This will prevent over stretching as
well. Once safely in the pose, we can focus on the
breath. Lateral Flexion Poses are great for respiratory
problems. The torso is contained as we deepen our
breath.
Most Lateral Flexion poses actually include a small
Twist. In Utthitta Parsvakanasana (Extended Side
Angle Pose - shown in the photo), a twist is added.
First, we engage the muscles in the neck by tucking the
chin slightly (Jalandhara Bandha). Then we rotate the
head to look towards the ceiling. This in turn rotates the
spine slightly, creating our Twist.
From an energetic perspective, Lateral Flexion poses
are both Yin and Yang. They are cooling to the side of
the body that stretches the muscles and heating to the
side of the body that contracts the muscles. The Solar
Plexus and the Heart Chakras are stimulated. The
Solar Plexus is stimulated from side stretching and
twisting, and the opening of the chest stimulates the

Heart Chakra. The Solar Plexus and Heart Chakras are a

pair. The Solar Plexus is about our feelings and desires
and the Heart Chakra is about unconditional love and
compassion. We can take the time to create the balance
between the two.
Lateral Flexion poses offer us the opportunity to look at
life from another perspective. We can take a side step
from our everyday pattern of thinking and open our minds
to lateral thinking.
Lateral thinking means to look at things from another
angle to think outside the square. Let logic go and open
your mind...............................
What a great New Years resolution!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

BARWON HEADS SUSTAINABILITY GROUP

Barwon Heads Sustainability Group 2015 Phew its been a busy 2015 for our little group......... with
some great achievements. Hope you enjoy our wrap up
of the year, we hope to encourage some new faces to
help steer our projects in 2016.
Barwon Heads Sustainability Group is one of the
sub-groups of the Barwon Heads Community Arts
Garden, and works in the local area to support and
promote sustainable practices. We run a small steering
committee and a email distribution list of 154 people. We
reached out to over 20 local organisations and/or
businesses during the year. Our guiding document
continues to be the Community Plan for a Sustainable
Barwon Heads.
The Plan underwent a further formal review this year,
firstly through a conversation space at Festival of the
Sea (John Green's Living Room) and later through
direct invitations to over 20 community groups. Work is
currently being undertaken to incorporate the feedback
into a broader Community Plan. (View the plan on our
website www.bhsustainability.org.au). There are five
key themes from which project activities are conducted.
Food,Transport, Environments - Natural and Built,
Resource Efficiency, Community Resilience and
Strength.

Key priority projects in 2015 have been:

Plastic Bag Free Barwon Heads stage 2

over 450 bags sewn by volunteers for 'borrow and bring
back' project, bags will be available in IGA, Starfish, BH
Newsagent, BH Wine Store & Primary School

We also have noted poor connections when trains run
late - have commented to PTV, VLine, McHarry's

Green Steps energy and waste audits

some change eg low energy lighting, solar installation

Stories and Numbers Estuary project to

involve 'citizen scientists' in developing a journal of the
estuary is underway and will develop throughout 2016,
with intention of launching at 2017 Festival of the Sea.

Songs of the South

The Sustainability Group is running a song competition for
Festival of the Sea and is looking for great songs about this
local area.
Shortlisted entries will perform live, perhaps on the
Saturday, before a judging panel that includes a music
industry professional.
Barwon Heads/Ocean Grove do not have to be mentioned
as such, but it should be clear in the lyrics that the song is
about this area and has a connection to place. The entry
categories will be individuals and groups under 13 years of
age, 13-18 years, and over 18. Entries are to be provided on
a memory stick by February 29, 2016.
More information can be requested by emailing
festivaloftheseabh@outlook.com
We look forward to receiving many entries!
Here is a great new project lead by a Margaret Griffith a
member of Barwon Heads Sustainability Group.

The Barwon Estuary Project

What is the project? - Citizen scientists of Barwon Heads
will create a Journal of the Barwon Estuary. Participants will
record their observations of flora and fauna from the
Barwon Heads bridge to lake Connewarre on the Museum
Victoria website (www.bowerbird.org.au) or in a specially
created individual nature diary. Recording methods can
include data entry, photography, reflections, poetry, song,
art. In community workshops we'll refine our scientific and
creative skills. A publishing group will be formed to select
contributions and collate them in the Journal of the Barwon
Estuary.
Everyone welcome... All ages. Groups, families and
individuals. Local residents and visitors.
Can you contribute any of these skills? - Keen ears and
sharp eyes, scientific knowledge, creative flair (literary,
photographic and artistic), enthusiasm, willingness to learn,
love of the Barwon Estuary, computer skills, flair for
marketing, event management, ability to write funding
submissions or to crowd source, editing and publishing
skills. Further Information Margaret Griffith from Barwon
Heads Sustainability Group. Email: margriffs@gmail.com.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

Enjoy a fire safe summer January 2016
With the holiday season well and truly upon us, it's time to remind
ourselves of what we can all do to enjoy a fire safe summer. Fires are
not just the domain of open paddocks and bushland, fires can also
start at the home and cause damage to yours and neighbouring
properties.
With many holiday makers in our beautiful town, it's a timely reminder
of the responsibility we all have to one another. Here's a five things we
can all do:
1.
Monitor fire danger ratings to stay safe. On days where the
fire danger rating is severe, extreme or code red it's better to stay in
town centres rather than visit national parks or bush areas. These are
likely to be closed.
2. On total fire ban days do not operate machinery likely to cause sparks (eg angle grinders or whipper snippers) and do not light
an open fire or solid fuel bbq.
3. On total fire ban days you are safe to use fixed gas or electric bbq's built into a permanent structure of brick, stone or concrete.
Portable gas or electric bbq's are also ok to use if they are designed exclusively for meal preparation.
4. Know what your fire plan is, which may mean leaving the area early, well before there are any signs of fire. This goes for
residents and holiday makers.
5. Download the FireReady app to your smart phone. This app provides the latest fire information and warnings. Set the app to
notify you of incidents occurring in a chosen area and use it to stay up to date with local Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire
Bans.
To find out more, visit cfa.vic.gov.au
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has turned out to 44 incidents so far this year. Recently, we supported a controlled burn in the
Winchelsea area, an important activity to reduce the amount of long, dry grass alongside local roads. The experience is good practice
in the event we need to attend a bushfire and support major incidents of that nature.
We have a Facebook page informing you of local community safety events and insights to what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you
jump on and give us a like to follow what we are up to!
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new members. If you are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people and
being part of a team that contributes to the safety of our community, please call Captain Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or
email Secretary Kira Crawford Brooks on cap.bhufb@bigpond.com

Into 2016 and we trust everyone has had a good Christmas and New year.
Enjoyable as pennant is, its great to get a break at this time of year, some social bowls if you want,
some serious competition if you want, or just put your feet up and forget bowls for a while.
Some Club Championship games will get done as we head to the pointy end of
competition.
The main focus for the Club in January is the return of Barefoot Bowls, Crackerjack,
whatever you like to call it.

BOWLING CLUB On every Wednesday and Friday during January from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
Celebrating 43 years

Whether or not youve bowled before doesnt matter, just rock up, bowls supplied, food
And drinks available.
So make time to come along and give it a try.
The Community Bowls competition is off and running and going well. Whilst they have a break over January, theyll no doubt be
keen to get back to it in February. As nearly all players are new to bowls, some are showing amazing improvement, some others
may take a little longer.
Hoping everyone enjoys January in Barwon Heads,
Until next time, good bowling.

a Huge Success

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?
These hazy, lazy days of summer
Now that the orgy of excess otherwise known as
Christmas is over and the festive haze has cleared
it's time to get on with the task of leisure.
If the idea of entertaining the family is making the
thought of returning to work seem reasonable let me
suggest a quality family outing right here in the
village of Barwon Heads.
I'm not talking about another round of beach cricket it's far too energetic.
An afternoon visit to the Lobster Pot or Barwon
Estuary Heritage Centre is a relaxing, informative
and hands-on experience. I'm talking about the
green building on the riverfront near 'At the Heads'
restaurant.
Right now is the summer opening season from
1.00p.m.-4.00p.m. Daily.
Inside you will find a treasure trove of stories about
the natural and social heritage of our river estuary.
That means 4 tanks for you to come face to face with
our fishy neighbours from the river. It also means a
touch tank with other marine creatures that can be
picked up and perused.
For other interests there is our large collection of
photos from yesteryear. In the backyard plant fans
will find our collection of local species.
All that for a gold coin donation
After an enlightening afternoon visit I'm sure parents
will feel they have earned a good cup of tea. If you
wish to find out more contact the Friends of the
Lobster Pot. Make contact through Barwon Coast.

WORD ABOUT THE HOOD

BARWON HEADS ASSOC.

President - Judith Brooks
Meet @The Senior Citizens Hall
3rd Monday in Month @ 7.30pm
All welcome

For those readers who are visiting or new to the

area, the Hooded Plover is a small, timid,
endangered beach-nesting bird which is endemic
to our local beaches.
Hooded Plovers are the masters of camouflage and are welladapted to life on the beach that is, life on the beaches of 100
years ago.
Their once tranquil beach habitat has now been overwhelmed by
people visiting the beach for recreation, bringing all sorts of
things that the birds are unfamiliar with dogs, horses, 4WDs,
beach balls, toddlers!
Hoodies now struggle to find a bit of undisturbed space on the
beach to breed and because their nesting failure rate is as high
as 90-95%, their numbers are declining, as too few young are
added to the population to sustain it.
Birdlife Australia and hundreds of coastal volunteers are turning
this dire situation around; by monitoring hoodies and detecting
when they have eggs or chicks and putting protective
management in place to relieve many of the human pressures.
Hooded Plovers lay their eggs directly on the sand in a simple,
shallow nest scrape. The nest can be anywhere above the hightide mark, on the beach or in the dunes.
Hooded Plovers eggs are small (about the size of a 20-cent
piece) and very well camouflaged; so well camouflaged that they
are easily trodden on by accident.
Egg incubation takes 28 days and if completed successfully, the
tiny fluffball chicks hatch out with surprisingly powerful legs.
Adult hoodies don't feed their young; the chicks must fend for
themselves, feeding on the sandhoppers found in decomposing
seaweed. With sufficient undisturbed feeding time, growth is
rapid and in just five weeks they can fly.
During those five weeks before flight, however, they are at their
most vulnerable and face many threats.
Aside from the ever present avian predators: magpies, ravens,
gulls, kestrels and other raptors, these chicks are highly
sensitive to disturbance from off-lead dogs.
When an off-lead dog is present, chicks will go into hiding which
means they can't feed and may die of starvation or dehydration if
they are disturbed for a long period of time or frequently
disturbed throughout the day. When the chick's parents are
preoccupied with fending off or distracting off-lead dogs the
chicks are then vulnerable to avian attack.
An unleashed dog is more likely to explore and to move
unpredictably from the water to the upper beach, or even into the
dunes, where they are likely to encounter the eggs or hiding
chicks, and to accidentally step on and crush them.
Believe it or not, the birds can tell the difference between a dog
on or off the lead.
Hooded plovers have been observed to be less reactive to
leashed dogs; a dog on the lead is very close to its owner and
moves at the same speed, in a predictable path.
As a consequence disturbance is of a shorter duration and less
likely to be lethal.
Success for the hoodies depends on everyone. Please, if you
are visiting any beach where hoodies are breeding, respect the
signs at the breeding areas.
Walk your dog elsewhere, but if that's impossible, keep them on
a leash at all times and walk at the waters edge.
Never walk at high tide as the nests are on the sand just above
the high-water mark.
Of the five breeding pairs between Point Lonsdale and
Collendina, the three breeding pairs along the Barwon Coast
and the five pairs along the Breamlea Coast, at the time of
writing, there is only one chick (at 42W) which (if our Christmas
wish has been granted) will hopefully be fledged by the time this
article goes to print.

News from the Beaches and Coastal Environs

Barwon Coast is a
Committee of
Management appointed
by the State Government
with responsibility for
the management of
13km of coastal crown
land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue
Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our
beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove,
Barwon Heads and 13thBeach.
Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.
NEW FORESHORE TOILETS
Barwon Coast constructed two new 'micro flush' public
toilets that were opened for public use in Mid-December.
The 'all access' facilities are located at the Bridge Car

DOG ON BEACHES
Barwon Coast works closely with the City of Greater
Geelong and this year COGG has purchased a special
vehicle to improve patrols on public land.
For the last few years an educative approach has been
taken toward dogs on beaches and other public land.
We ask that all dog owners practice responsible
ownership and abide by the signage onsite.
This year Penalty Infringements Notices will be imposed
where necessary.
PLAT IT SAFE BY THE WATER
As we move into our summer beach season it is
important to always swim between the flags at our locally
patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove Main, Ocean Grove
Spit 18W and 13th Beach Main where Life Savers &
Lifeguards will be on patrol 7 days a week, for the peak
holiday covering week from Boxing day to Australia day .
At all beach access pathways we have installed Beach
Safety Signs that provide advice on general water
conditions, rocks, tide etc. and where the nearest
patrolled beach is. Please take time to read those
notices.
Always be alert on the
beach when with children
and never swim alone

Park on the Ocean Grove Spit, immediately east to the

Barwon Heads bridge and the other on 13th Beach
Road at the Beacon Car Park. The environmentally
friendly facilities should be a welcome addition to the
public infrastructure available to the local community
and visitors alike. They come at a total investment cost
of $200k by Barwon Coast.
The Beacon Car Park toilet is pictured.

Tragically serious
incidents have occurred in
recent summers so it is
really important to take
personal responsibility for
your safety when near the
water, be it at the ocean or
the river beaches.
Dangerous activities such
as jumping or diving off the
Barwon Heads jetty, the
promenade or the bridge can lead to serious injury
especially back injuries.
This year we have seen massive movement of sands
along the beaches and at low river flows the water depth
can be minimal, especially at low tide near the Jetty, so
don't do it!
BARWON HEADS PROMENADE UPDATE
Rebuilding of the seawall commenced on Monday 28th
September and was completed by the 18th of December

2015.
The construction of a new concrete promenade,
including a handrail will begin after Australia Day.
The promenade walk re-opened the week before
Christmas.
In the interest of public safety, all visitors to the area are
asked to take note of the site signage and only walk as
directed.
SUMMER SHUTTLE BUS
Leave your car at home or your caravan park and catch
the free shuttle bus co-ordinated by Barwon Coast with
financial support from valuable community aware
sponsors.
The free bus is operating from 27th December until 26th
January commencing at 10am thru to 6pm with an hourly
lap of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the beaches
starting at the Ocean Grove Post Office.
The Shuttle Bus tows a trailer to carry beach gear
including surf boards.
BARWON HEADS FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB
HARMER OVAL PRECINCT MASTER PLAN
In late September 2015 Barwon Coast engaged
Thompson Berrill Landscape Design (TBLD) to develop
a Master Plan to guide improvement works for the club at
Barwon Heads Caravan Park.
After a number of stakeholder meetings TBLD have
developed the draft Master Plan that has been endorsed
by Barwon Coast for public comment.
The comment period will close in mid-February 2016 and
it is expected the plan will be finalised and adopted
before the end of March 2016.
To obtain a copy of the Draft Master Plan please contact
Barwon Coast on the phone number below or by email at
office@barwoncoast.com.au ; hard & digital copies are
available. Alternately the draft plan can be downloaded

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Happy New Year to locals and visitors of our wonderful town. 2016 is going to be a fantastic year for the BHCC. We have loads to look forward to. Following a very
busy 2015, our major focus in the near future is the B2B our Bridge to Bridge ride from Sydney to Barwon Heads. It's only three months until the big ride from Sydney
to Barwon Heads actually happens. About 1100 km in eight days averaging around 150 km per day. Three months away! Only thirteen weeks! That is not far away.
Luckily we have been doing many k's, but we are now going to step it up and do even more.
We have had a lot of support from our local businesses that are getting behind the B2B ride and supporting
Photo: Marg Pocock
us in our fundraising efforts for Give Where You Live, the charity we are riding for.
Barwon Heads Community Bank and Open2View, Health Creation in Ocean Grove, Scandinavian
Ice-Cream Company, Caf Maritana, Annie's Provedore and Max Action all offering support in
many different ways. If your business would like to assist, please talk to any of the BHCC crew.
The fundraiser and launch on Monday 7th December at Annie's Provedore with Gerard Whateley
and Ian Cover was fantastic. The night was hosted by Ian, giving a very insightful (and funny)
introduction to the nine riders. Gerard then took hold of the microphone and we had two Q&A sessions
about his broad and varied sports knowledge. Overall, a successful night raising over $1500 to go
directly to 'Give Where You Live'. This will help many needy and desperate people living in the Geelong
and Bellarine region.
If you would like to donate, drop in some of your loose change into a tin around town. There are tins in the
Scandinavian Ice Cream Company shops and in the Bendigo Bank. Look out for the B2B logo. Or you can
donate by going to our website: www.barwonheadscyclingclub.com.au

Christmas Party

The annual Christmas party held late last year was another roaring success. We started at the CFA and rode around the levee bank and on to the first park between Fisherman's
and The Mews. Bruschetta, spicy meatballs and smoked salmon blinis with champagne, local beers and homemade lemonade. Next stop was 18W after crossing the bridge.
Homemade sushi and more champagne and beers. The kids found a bike jump and went crazy. How could this get any better? We then went back over the bridge and rode over to
Seabank Park. A flavoursome BBQ with Benno's snags, beers and GTs. The kids ran amok with massive beachballs. Last stop was the river park. Fresh fruit, Greg's famous icecream, Baileys and coffee. What a brilliant day. Fifteen families, Fifty riders, Four venues, fabulously fun. Following are some comments from the kids......
Nick: "Greg's ice cream is so great I had three (for the second year in a row!)"
Jonny: "I didn't believe there could be Dads who could make sushi that tasted so good!"
Billy: "The food was scrumptious".
Daniel: "It was GREAT. But do you think anyone realised I had 4 ice-creams?"
Skyla: "My favourite bit was the ice-cream and going round and round and round and
round with the girls at the beach park".
Simon: Two words Salted. Caramel.
Daisy: I loved the big blow up balls at Seabank and the food at the first venue.
Monty: The best thing was the blow up balls and I loved the ice-creams. I had two;
salted caramel and cookies and cream, but my favourite was salted caramel.
Caitlin: "The bike riding party is a great way of celebrating the great year that the BHCC
has had. It's a great way to meet new people and catch up with old friends."
Patrick: "No blue car! Bike riding!" (on arriving at the second venue, where Patrick's dad
Wiggle had his car parked)
Patrick: "I want white ice-cream, please Greg!"
Time Trial
Our third ever time trial was the best ever. This year we included two kids section;
younger riders under seven and those older than seven. In the junior junior section, the
riders finished in the following order: Michael Sheridan jnr., Skye Quirk, Sienna Gill,
Audrey Whitfield, Eilidh Sheridan and Elliot Gill. Watch out for this group next year
senior juniors!
In the senior junior section, team McNeilly took podium honours and the finishing line-up
was: Daisy McNeilly, Finn McNeilly, Monty McNeilly, Olivia Quirk, Alex Quirk, Nick
Malcolm and Banjo Ramage. Top riding from these guys and it looks like we may even
have our first national champion from this group.
From the open section, riders rode 6.3km from the windmill to the Cadel Line. This ride
was a real endurance test where riders only had themselves and their bikes. The
finishing order of riders was as follows: Simon Quirk, Glen Guest, Dave Goldie, Andy
McNeilly, Greg Whitfield, Steve Gill, Michael Sheridan, Graham Neale, Lawrie Malcolm
Graeme Hanel and Neville Wright.
A great organisational job to put it all together by Greg, Simon and Mikey. All followed by
ice-creams for the kids and a few coldies for the dads. Another successful BHCC event.
That's it for January. Have a wonderful summer break and stay safe. There will be a lot of
traffic around over the next couple of months, so please to be patient if you are caught
behind a cyclist. Some of us aren't trying to go slow, we just are.
Happy cycling,
Andy McNeilly

SEAGULLS BASKETBALL CLUB

Hi Basketballers,
We are now half way through the summer season and enjoying a break in January. Games resume week beginning 1st February with the season ending
late in March. We have planned a Full On Fun social event at Supatramp for season end so keep an eye on Facebook for further details. The club is
very excited that we have our first ever ladies team playing on a Monday night. They are a great bunch of girls and will provide inspiration for the younger
girls coming up through the ranks. Good luck for the rest of the season!
Passing the ball to your teammates is crucial during a basketball game and is the fastest way to get the ball closer to the basket. So beginners need to
learn how to make good passes. Basic passes include a chest pass, bounce pass and overhead pass. To practice passing, have players pair up and work
on each of these skills. Chest passes are done with two hands, with the passer and receiver working to keep the ball at chest level. Bounce passes are
thrown from the same position, but the passer should aim for the floor about three-quarters of the way between him and his partner. Overhead passes are
also done with two hands raised above your head, but players should be careful to keep the ball directly overhead, as bringing it behind the head can
result in a stolen ball during a game.
Enjoy the rest of the holidays and see you back at the courts in February.

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

Happy New Year Barwon Heads
On a cricket front, we're actually on a break and will
return in the next week or so. For those from out of town
the cricket oval is at the northern end of the main street
and, on Saturdays when we play, the bar is open and we
have the coldest and least expensive drinks available.
We also put on a reasonable game of cricket as well.
In December we had 3 players make hundreds. Firstly
we had Matt High make his very first A Grade ton after
only returning to the game at the age of 40. Matt's made
a number of hundreds in B Grade, but his 123 against
Ocean Grove on their ground was his first in the top
grade. Tom Hobbs batted for the entire day to bring up a
masterful 125 not out in B Grade at home. After a difficult
start when he was reminded several times by his partner
that he risked a bang on the head with a cricket bat if he
wafted outside off stump, Hobbsy got into a groove
and except for maybe, possibly, under certain
circumstances having ever so slightly gently feathered
one to the keeper on 98 and been given the benefit of the

obvious doubt, he never looked like missing out on the

three figures. Finally Ash Muir proved that persisting is a
fabulous virtue in sport when, after posting three scores
over 70 this season and missing out on a hundred, he
managed to get there in the game before Christmas down
in Anglesea. All three have worked hard on their craft in
the pre-season and the first half of the season and are
seeing the rewards for the work now.
We've had some solid numbers at the club recently with
the second oval back in play and more cricket to come
and watch. Social activity is as important a part of any
sport as what happens inside the field of play, on the
green, the fairway, in the pool or on the court. Interacting
with friends in your team or with rivals in the opposition is
as important as anything that happens with a ball or a bat.
Suffering the pain and anguish of defeat, the stress of a
close contest or the joy of victory are all better when
shared with others and in a sadistic way they are also
better when you're aware that the other guy cared about
the outcome as much as you did and, after you've won at

least, he's suffering and you're not. In the ultimate

extension you get to share that joy in a premiership
season. The bond between players in those season's
has been written about many times and is well
understood and often celebrated for many years after it
happened by those involved. This month such a day will
occur again when the 1995-6 premiers in the BPCA have
a 20 year catchup. The club has planned a celebration of
cricket in the park when we also have a twilight game
after the A Grade game, on the main oval between under
13 and under 11 combined teams and two under 11
teams will battle it out under lights on the small oval. It's
hoped that the day and the evening will showcase the
past present and the future of the club's cricketers. It's
happening on January 30th at the Village Park and
you're all invited.
Cricket is on a short break and will return on Saturday
January 9th. Please join us then.
More next month.
Matt Dunell
!
