on Wednesday, March 24. The
perpetrators displaced the tiles,
or “high impact modular plastic
flooring,” covering the concrete,
causing an estimated $25,000 worth
of damage in destroyed material.
Before that, they used spray paint
to copy the court markings through
the tiles onto the concrete. Officer
Larry Raglione of the WSUV
campus police is heading up the
investigation.
Official estimates place the
crime as occurring between the
hours of 1 - 5:30 in the morning. Neil

arrived early that morning and
noticed the bare concrete that had
been exposed by tiles’ absence. Due
to the popularity of the court, it is
difficult to ascertain the identity of
the guilty party immediately.
The tiles, which assist in shock
absorption and standing water
displacement, were custom fit for
the area. Careful removal of the
tiles necessitates a special tool; the
destruction of the interlocking tabs
caused irreparable damage to the
equipment due to the force with
which they were extracted.
Evan Moriwaki, student member
of the S&A Committee, says the
sport court is usually open. “We
used to lock the gate, but we had
people climb over to use it. It was
more of a safety hazard that way.”
He feels there was no point in
removing the tiles or causing such

Technology and Culture
(DTC) degree at the new
student orientation. There was a
panel of professors doing what I
can only imagine was a routine

Various students around campus

Some think installing a surveillance
camera near the court would prove
beneficial. Others believe putting
more lighting to illuminate the
surrounding area would deter
vandalism as well as increasing
the safety of the nearby walking
path. More than one student feels
that closing off the court due to the
vandalism reached into the realm
of unfairness. One idea shared by
a few was to lock the court and
require people interested in using
it check out a key at the recreation

such proponent for the plan. “I
think people think it’s public

aseem A. Shqueir,
a graduate of
Washington State
University’s class of 2009, died
in an accident on March 27. A
participant of the hiking trip put
together by students and staff at
the WSUV
Recreation
Center, the
twenty-two
year old
fell after
walking
off the
designated trail. Shqueir had
been leaning over a railing
taking pictures of the falls.
Officials at WSUV as well
as participants on the trip
have confirmed that the trail
was posted with warnings to
dissuade straying from the path.
Shqueir attended WSUV
from 2007-2008 after
transferring from a university in
Pennsylvania. He enjoyed taking
part in the activities sponsored
by the Recreation Center. Many
of the Recreation Staff knew
him well. Student Involvement
Manager Michelle McIlvoy
remembered him as “energetic
and someone who wanted the
full college experience.” Indeed,
following his time at WSUV,
Shqueir transferred to Pullman
to become more involved.
He pursued a Management of
Information Systems degree. He
moved back to Vancouver after
graduating since his aunt lived
in the area.
Recreation Coordinator Neil
Gregory said that compared to
other hiking trips, the Silver
Falls hike was actually one of
the easiest. “It’s considered an
urban hike because it’s simple…
it’s as easy as it gets with nine
miles..” The trip was student
planned and organized, and
was the first time the group
attempted the particular hike.
Gregory assures all procedures
were followed.

Distinction event honors women in community

Women of the Year

ne would know they
were at a women’s event
after overhearing a high-
heeled woman standing next to them
say “No carbs after 7! No carbs after
7!” while simultaneously munching
on a delightful and delicate mini
croissant sandwich. But it would
be most obvious that you were at an
event that everyone had been looking
forward to by the lack of empty seats.
The Women of Distinction event
took place at 6 p.m. on Mar. 31st in
the Firstenburg Student Commons
with a goal to celebrate Women’s
History Month and honor women
who inspire, mentor, and empower
others. Hor d’œuvres, wine, beer,
and live classical music provided by
the Orchestra Club were provided for
the finely dressed attendees. There
was also a Dress for Success clothing

succeed in the workplace.
Michelle McIlvoy, manager of
the Office of Student Involvement
(OSI), and Sally Thrall, intern in
the OSI, welcomed the crowd to the
event’s second year and introduced
the nominees. There were 16 non-
student nominees and 8 student
nominees, with this year being the
first for a student category.
Honorable mentions were awarded
to the non-student nominees which
included women who have worked
for positive change in orphanages,
on Native American reservations,
in reconstructing Haiti, with the
boy scouts, the Vancouver police
department, and in the creation of a
camp for foster kids and their siblings
who have been separated. The
winner of the Women of Distinction
for the non-student category was Dr.
Claire Latham, Associate Professor
of Accounting, who has mentored
students at WSU for over 15 years.
The student nominees were Erica
Castro, Cara Cottingham, Rebekah
Juhala, Tamara Kuratli, Elena
Mahrt, Beaudie Stroebel, Alexandra
Terrill, and Kathryn Tijerina. The
honorable student mentions went to
doctoral candidate Alexandra Terrill,
a working mother researching a
program to better understand the
increased risk of cardiovascular
morbidity among working mothers,
and to Elena Mahrt, a student
ambassador whose “enthusiasm is
palpable”. The winner of the Women
of Distinction Student Category went
to Erica Castro, co-president of the
Woman’s Empowerment Coalition,
working mother, and top student
among a long list of other activities
and accomplishments.
The evening’s keynote speaker
was Betsy Henning, local business
owner of AHA!, a marketing
communications firm that employs
35 people. She told encouraging
and entertaining stories of owning
your business and empowered the
audience to follow their dreams.

n Monday, Mar. 29,
2010, students and
staff gathered in the
Administration building and
Firstenburg Student Commons (FSC)
to celebrate a milestone: WSUV’s
21st Birthday. The event, held
from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., was
originally scheduled to be outside
in between the Administration and
Classroom buildings, but was moved
inside due to the day’s rainy and
windy weather.
The event was organized by the
Student Alumni Group (SAG) and
funded by ASWSUV. Tables adorned
with red and black balloons were set
up in both buildings while SAG and
ASWSUV members offered vanilla
strawberry cake, chocolate cake, and
Martinelli’s Apple Cider to students
and staff. In the Commons, KOUG
radio provided music.
Additionally, members provided
people with brochures that gave facts
regarding the founding of Washington
State University’s campuses and
the university’s unique traditions,
from the year the famous Cougar
logo originated, 1936, to the year
Patty Murray, the first Washington
State University female alumnus to
be elected to the U.S. Senate, was
elected, 1992. Students could also
sign up to receive e-mail updates
from SAG for upcoming events.

the event this year because a 21st
birthday is a special birthday to

about 50 members on the club’s
mailing list, but only about 12
solid members show up at the
club meetings to play chess every
week, “Of course there are new
people every week, but 12 is about
the number of those that come
regularly.”
Rosas, who recently took over
the club from former president
Ivan Bailey, actually just learned
how to play chess last summer.
She thinks that playing chess takes
a lot of patience “since you have
to strategize a lot and think about
others’ best move and yours as well”,
but it is rewarding, “Even when you
lose, you learn new tactics.”
Bailey shared the reasons behind
his forming the chess club, “I love
chess, and have been playing it
since 2004. I was also the chess
club president at Fort Vancouver
High School during ‘06 and ‘07

needs is a good old-
fashioned drag show. A psychology
major and co-president of the
Cougar Pride club, alongside Jes
Dimas, Anoai-Gonzalez knows
that drag shows are a huge part of
the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender) community, and
believes an evening of glamour is a
“great way to introduce people to this
new environment.”
On Friday, Apr. 9 at 8 p.m., the
Firstenburg Student Commons will
be transformed into a world-class
drag club, complete with a stage and
catwalk. Ten to fifteen performers will
be lip-syncing to songs, promenading

and sash.
The drag show theme is that of
a typical high school prom, and
audience members are encouraged
to dress up in their most outrageous
‘80s poofy-sleeved and ‘90s metallic
dresses. They are encouraged to
come in drag as well, even if not
performing. There are a few student
performers who have signed up to
dress as the opposite sex, but most of
the performers are semi-professionals
from the Seattle and Portland area
coming simply because they love
to perform, and to take a shot at the
chance at winning another title.
The judges include an administrator
from campus, a Cougar Pride club
dressing room. The performers will
bring all of the gender bending tools
to take them from man to woman or
woman to man, which include make-
up, wigs, and modest to extravagant
outfits. The show will consist of
more queens than kings, although
Anoai-Gonzalez says in the drag
community they typically exist just
as often.
Planned Parenthood and the
YWCA will be in attendance to
provide information on STD testing.
Popcorn and light refreshments will
also be available. A photographer
will be taking prom-style pictures
in front of a backdrop for those who
wish to have pictures taken. Going
along with the drag show tradition,

I
t’s easy to feel jealous towards
people who get to travel to
exotic locales. You see them
shopping for fancy suitcases, sandals,
and underwater cameras. They
ask you to accompany them to get
passport photos, and they talk non-
stop about the secret cosmopolitan
clubs that only the hippest jet-setters
get into in whichever third world
country they’re visiting. But of
course, it’s all about the culture!

to take pictures of (and they’ll look
great on Flickr)!
But the reality is, traveling is
exhausting, often dangerous, and
expensive. Take my cousin for
example. She’s been in Moscow
living the high life for the past 2
years. And this morning, as I was
listening to NPR’s coverage of the
recent bombing in the busy metro
station right next to her apartment, I
get an email assuring the family that
she’s all right. Well, of course I’m
glad she’s alive and someone else is
dead (if it absolutely had to be that
way), but that’s just one reason not to
travel: bombs.
Another example would be my
mom: as she was leaving yesterday
to visit my little sister in Spain, she
received a phone call from British
Airways saying, “sorry, but the
crew is on strike and your flight is
cancelled.” But she’s stubborn and
really wanted to go, so she had my
dad drive her to another state to take
Air France. So there you go, another
reason not to travel: strikes.
Anyways, traveling far away is
really expensive and since, like you, I
don’t have any money, I look for the
most awesome FREE stuff to do, and
I always have a blast without getting
sick from bad water, encountering
angry, bomb-strapped extremists,
or angry, miniature liquor bottle-
wielding flight attendants.

CS vs. DTC

eeks later, having
just moved here from
elsewhere in the state,
and still in the process of meeting
new people, I met someone in my
community who was a DTC major
here at WSUV. Through her, I was
able to get some first-hand knowledge
of what it was all about. I started here
as a Computer Science (CS) major,
which I am still pursuing. Of late it
has come to my knowledge that some
people aren’t sure of the difference
between the DTC degree and the CS
degree. I write to you now to help
those still in the dark to understand it.
Computer Science is the science
of computer programming. We
don’t actually build the computers.
We just make them do our bidding.
In a nutshell, we work with codes
that can translate what we want into
what the computer understands. I’m
not familiar with all of the technical
details of what’s happening on a
hardware level, but that’s the general
idea. Coding can be compared to
learning a new language, to an
extent. When learning any language,
you need to learn the culture as well
as the words themselves, otherwise
you may as well be speaking a
different language. Imagine trying
to understand American English
human, their “culture” is all the more
foreign to us. They don’t think at all
like we do. They don’t think on their
own at all, come to mention it. And to
top it all off, the only way we can talk
to them is through code.
There are all kinds of computer
codes out there, such as Python, Java,
(not to be confused with Javascript),
C, C#, C++, and many more, each
with their own syntax and structure.
Most people seem to think of the
computer as their Windows or Mac
OS desktop. The truth is that what
you see isn’t half of what’s going on.
It’s just the part that programmers
and GUI designers made so that
people wouldn’t be intimidated by
the madness behind the scenes. GUI
stands for graphical user interface,
and most of us probably know them
better as the part of the computer
we see, such as our desktops and
program windows. The code works
behind and through the GUI. They’re
a lot more user friendly than having to
type commands onto a blank screen.
If you’ve ever bothered to open
the “command line” or “command
prompt” program on your computer,
or used a computer in the early days
of things such as DOS, then you
know what it would look like to have
to work with a computer without a
shiny GUI. If you want to know who
the spectrum from CS students. To
quote the WSUV DTC program
website, “Students concentrate in
one of three areas: 1) Multimedia
Authoring, 2) Informatics, 3) Culture
and Technology.” According my
friend, they learn very little code,
and what they do learn is along the
lines of HTML, otherwise known
as relatively simple web page
programming languages. They take a
variety of classes concerning design
of web sites and various other forms
of digital media. They learn how
to use programs like Photoshop, a
popular digital image editing utility.
In short, they are the artistic side of
the technology. They are more likely
to be the ones working on the making
the previously mentioned GUI’s look
nice. They have nothing to do with
what they do, but that’s not their
specialty anyway. They work on the
surface of Computer Science, where
they put to use what the computer
scientists create. To sum it up, the
CS people program Photoshop, DTC
people play with Photoshop.
The DTC students also study
the culture of computers. At least,
they’re supposed to. My friend told
me she took a class in which for an
entire semester, they were taught
that, “some people have computers,
and some people don’t.” Having not
name, and that is about as much as
I got. Anyway, it all feeds back into
the more artistic, conceptual focus
that DTC has, as opposed to the more
quantitative, scientific focus of CS.
DTC is what my old Macroeconomics
professor from Port Angeles would
call a “feeeelings” course. Computer
science is a science. DTC is an art.
The only big similarity is that they
both involve computers.
As a computer scientist, I’m
tempted to say that my field of study
is the more important one, but I see
the merit of having those more trained
in the application field of computers.
From a technical standpoint, however,
we wouldn’t even have DTC if it
weren’t for computer scientists. And
while I’m not sure how many GUIs
or websites are put together by actual
DTC majors, I know that without
those kinds of people to think about
the appearance and presentation side
of things we would be the worse off
for it. In fact, looking at the official
site, it would seem that art and
design are the primary focus of the
program. Let’s just say I happen to
know that some computer scientists
aren’t particularly artistic, so it helps
to have people who know what they
are doing in that realm too. However,
if you need to hire someone who can
code, don’t hire a DTC major.

like an obese 8 year old girl in a candy
factory. But now, Stephenie Meyer is
making yet another installment of
the Twilight series called The Short
Second Life of Bree Tanner –an
Eclipse Novella.

Tanner is evidence that Stephenie
Meyer is officially out of ideas and is
now throwing out even lower quality
writing to feed her cult following
more garbage so they keep giving her
money. Meyer was lucky enough to
get people to actually read her stories
to begin with, and might as well have
bought a lottery ticket when people
actually decided to obsess over them
because it was the popular thing for
13 year old girls to do.
In the end this addition to the
Twilight series will line the pockets
of at least two groups of people.

Soccer club kicks into Spring

occer is making some inroads at WSUV,
thanks to Khoa Ho, president of the
WSUV Soccer Club. “The purposes of
the soccer club shall be to play soccer with other
local and regional teams, to learn and teach others
how to play soccer, to help the members develop
their soccer skills both physically and mentally,
and to watch and enjoy soccer,” says Ho, listing
the motivating factors for making his club, and its
presence on campus, larger.
The WSUV Soccer Club officially started
last fall, and Ho shared some updates about the
club with The VanCougar while finishing up his
requests for club funds. According to Ho, there
are three important things to be aware of about
the club: the outdoor soccer season on campus,
which is put together by the Recreation Office; the
Indoor Soccer League, and the Memorial Weekend
Tournament.
Spring season outdoor soccer started on March
31 at 3:30 p.m. out in the soccer field. Before this
issue of the paper went to press, Ho was unsure
of what the turnout would be like, since outdoor
soccer had always been on Thursdays the previous
seasons, and he believed that a lot of people might
have classes on Wednesday afternoons. “I plan to
use outdoor soccer as an opportunity to look for
players for the soccer club’s future tournaments,”

of the field would affect the playing.
The Indoor Soccer League at the Salmon Creek
Indoor Soccer Arena is in the middle of the current
season, and the WSUV Soccer Club is participating
with a co-ed team. The WSUV team has not won
a game yet, hence Ho’s search for more players

and better tactics. The games are on Saturdays; the
times vary, but they usually are in the afternoons.
The Memorial Weekend Tournament is on May
31 at Delta Park in Portland. Ten people have
signed up so far, and the club needs about five more
male players.
As for the funds for the soccer club, Ho requested
about $3,000 from the students and activities fund Khoa Ho and Tim Snyder square off at the sports field.
(S & A Committee), but the request was denied. He
is now trying to get the money from the Senate.
“We are going to ask for money from the Senate for
individual events instead of a specific club budget,”
Ho explained.
Ho has some plans for the club next year.
He wants to make the club more official and
better organized by making sure more members
participate in practice, leagues, and tournaments.
He also will try to form a team for the outdoor

league to participate in the Portland Soccer District
in the fall. Last but not least, Ho is looking forward
to finding a volunteer coach with experience to
guide the club, and bring it to a higher and more
professional level.

program has been on food.
Yes, food. We all need it
and I like it more than most people.
In fact, I consider myself a foodie.
Foodie is an informal term for people
that have a sensuous relationship with
food or drink. Not only do I love food,
I also look upon it as a romance. And
so I often frequent establishments
that are known for their culinary
delights. That being said, I also like
food carts and dives that have dishes
you can’t get anywhere else.
However, it isn’t just what I
eat that foils my attempts in being
healthy, it is how much! So let’s talk
about portion sizing, shall we? In
America, it seems that everything
that is big is better. This means
homes, cars, wireless networks and
food. Wait…did I just say big food is
better? Well, that seems to be what is

consider to be “healthy foods.”

Even if you order the smallest steak,
what you receive on your plate is
actually two and a half servings! A
serving of hard cheese, like cheddar
or Swiss, is 1 ½oz, or the size of three
dice. My personal favorite, hummus,
has a serving size of 2 tablespoons, or
the size of a golf ball.
I am not saying that you should
never eat out or let yourself indulge
every once in awhile. It is just
important to acknowledge how much
“actual” calories you are putting into
your body. In order to help myself
with this issue, I use two major
approaches to control my portions.
First, when eating out, as soon as my
entrée is served I ask for a to-go box
and package up the “extra” servings
on my plate. Leftovers are a college
student’s best friend when a study
session occurs, and I don’t want to eat
myself into a food induced “coma.”
Second, when eating at home, I
measure my food as well as using a
smaller plate. With a small plate, my
brain thinks that I am actually having
a lot of food when I am actually only
eating true “servings.”

oving can be difficult.
Especially when you’re a
kid and you have to leave
all your friends, and go to a new school
with new cliques and new pecking
orders. You’re destined to be the
outcast, the new kid, the eternal bench
warmer. But moving is particularly
hard when your family is basically
fleeing for their lives from another
country run by a brutal dictator.
This is the backdrop to Milagro
Theatre’s How the García Girls Lost
Their Accents, directed by Portland
theatre veteran Antonio Sonera, and
playing now through April 17. Based
on the novel by celebrated author Julia
Alvarez, it tells the story of four sisters
who arrive in New York City in 1960
from the iron fisted Trujillo regime of
the Dominican Republic.
After witnessing the death of their
poet uncle, an opponent of the regime,
the fleeing family’s lives are changed
forever, as they try to find their own
voice amidst the racism and cultural
barriers that await them in America.
Each girl goes through her own
struggles to become assimilated in their
new country. They test the waters of
freedom by trying marijuana, date bare

I
t is a well known fact that
hair is a girl’s best accessory.
It’s always troubling to figure
out what looks best with personal
features, but there are always a few
tips and trends to follow. In the past,
fashion trends have strongly been
shown through the infamous Posh
Spice hairstyle, but isn’t it time for a
fresh change?
In times such as these, and being
a college student, it is important to
find a hairstyle that is stylish, yet
affordable. The key in choosing
a style and a trend for this year is
the stage, where the band heads to
the back, and the cockroaches head
butt, twirl in circles, and make oddly
terrifying cockroach noises. A tall
and somber man (walking expertly
on stilts) wearing a trench coat and
holding a plastic jug of insecticide
walks around, spraying the
cockroaches into jolting submission,
and then death.
So begins A Suicide Note from a
Cockroach, a play by Pelú Theatre,
who are rooted in San Juan, Puerto
Rico, but now based in Portland.
The show is based on the poem A
Suicide Note from a Cockroach in a
low income housing project by Pedro
Pietri, and it uses the circus (aerialists,
feet and chested hippies, give anarchist
speeches to their school, marry, and
divorce multiple times.
They try to fit in, to rid themselves
of their accents, but secretly long to
go back “home” to the Dominican
Republic. But when the chance arrives
for a vacation, they quickly realize
they can no longer relate to the limited
possibilities for women on the island:
being a subservient wife who cooks,
versatility. Despite length, the cut
should allow for some experiment
within each hairstyle. Long locks and
short chin length bobs are in!
Trends among short hairstyles
have been pretty clear throughout
2010. Extremely short pixie cuts are
out, while longer bobs are coming
into fashion. Although some will
always prefer shorter hairstyles,
longer, lengthier hair allows for
more style options. Long hair can be
difficult to maintain, and choosing the
length depends on lifestyle. Taking a
look in the mirror and your pinning
longer layers up can help you decide
whether to cut hair short or keep long.
Viewing guides and reading tips on
picking a cut flattering to certain
facial shapes can help as well.
Round-shaped faces should avoid
hairstyles that hold a lot of volume
tumblers, acrobats, and musicians) as

“everything he always wanted,” a
hypochondriac secretly desperate
cleans, and obeys every command
from her husband. This prompts the
beginning of empowerment for the
girls, particularly for the middle child
Yolanda, played vivaciously by Lauren
Bair, who winds up finding both
her voice as a poet and her place in
America.
Throughout the play, various men
come and go from the girl’s lives, and
all are excellently played by Melik
around the face, which means
avoiding short, blunt cuts. People
with square-shaped faces need to
avoid drawing attention to the jaw
line. Adding texture helps play
down this prominent feature. Much
like those with round-shaped faces,
people with square-shaped faces
should also avoid short, blunt bobs.
Oval-shaped faces have proven to
be the most versatile with hairstyles.
People with this shape can wear
almost any look. Just look at what
works best for your own features.
Heart-shaped faces should disperse
attention from the pointy chin and
towards the eyes or cheekbones.
Now that hairstyles have been
discussed, the next step to perfect
hair is choosing the right color. Most
have had slips and falls with hair
color, but starting out with baby steps
for plastic surgery, a rich, bossy and
successful laundromat owner, a drill
sergeant, and a mousy American
virgin.
The play is full of nosy neighbors,
who literally hang in the background,
do gravity defying jumps and flips,
along with other circus-fueled
behavior. And all the while the ratty,
dirty (and excellent) band plays on,
blending seamlessly with the actors
and acrobats, as they take life in stride
and continually hope for that light at
the end of the very, very long tunnel.

3D Alice brings audience to Wonderland

ost people are familiar
with the old animated
Disney film, Alice
in Wonderland, which, of course,
was based on the 1865 book Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis
Carroll. However, for those who have
somehow missed any introduction to
Alice over the last 140 years, it’s high
time to correct that oversight.
Alice in Wonderland is a story
about a young girl named Alice, who
is trapped in a life of common societal
rules and norms. However, Alice is a
girl who is different from the norm.
She has dreams and visions of a
different world, and thinks of things
that no one else would think of. When
she is faced with a dilemma that could
force her to continue in a life full of
restrictions, her reoccurring dream
becomes reality, after she follows a
rabbit down a hole.
The world Alice enters is like no
other. She faces some odd characters

Berk Gonenc: Automation and robotics
I
f a doctor were going to
perform surgery on you
using a robotic tool, would
you rather he use a tool that’s like a
video-game controller, or one that
lets him feel as if his own hands were
touching you?
So far, most robotic surgical
procedures are done with tools like a
video-game controller. For a surgeon
to feel that his hands are actually
touching the patient, haptic (from the
Greek, meaning “touch”) technology
is necessary.
And that’s what Berk Gonenc,
a Turkish graduate student in
mechanical engineering, is working
on. He’s trying to find an actuator
that works with precise torques and
motions. “It’s important for a surgeon
not to go too deep into the tissue,”
Berk observes. “So we want to bring
the sense of touch to doctors using
robotic tools. We need to have the
same forces at the end of the robotic
tool that the doctor would feel if he
were actually pressing the needle or
scalpel.”
To do this, Berk is combining
active and passive actuators in a
device that’s about 6 by 5 by 5 inches.
“Each kind of actuator has advantages
and disadvantages,” Berk says. “I’m
trying to combine the advantages of
the active actuator, which is a D.C.
motor, with the advantages of a
passive actuator, which is an electric-
rheological brake. They both sense
where the tool is and how far to go,
but they have to work in harmony. To
get them to do that, I need a control
algorithm that will decide when and
how much to activate the surgical
tool, and then I’ll write a program.
And then, I’ll need to make the robot
smaller.”
Berk is finishing his second
semester of graduate school. He’s
already thinking of ways that
his research might eventually be
extended to other surgical equipment
and tools. “There’s always one step
further,” says Berk. “Probably I’ll
find it, but then I’ll be thinking, ‘I
can make this better,’ so I’ll take
another step, and then I’ll think of
another way to make it better, and
I think it will go on like that until I
graduate. It’s like a marathon: You
must keep on running.”
Although he took the exams
necessary for admission to a U.S.
university, he wasn’t originally
intending to come to the U.S. for
his graduate work. Then a professor
helped him contact Dr. Hakan
Gurocak, director of WSUV’s
School of Engineering and Computer
Science, who helped him come up
with his research topic
Berk likes it here, but he misses
all the people he had to leave behind.
“Turkey is on the opposite side of
the earth, you know,” Berk says.
“It was hard to make that decision,
even though my family and friends
encouraged me. I tried not to think
about it, and then I found myself
here, basically. And the language
sounded different. We took classes
and used textbooks in English,
but academic language and daily
language are different, of course.
You can’t talk like a book when
you go out on the street. My first
few weeks were spent learning how
to live here, how to go shopping at
the supermarket, how to get places,
and how to use the equipment in the
mechanical engineering labs.
“But I found that once you dive
into studying, it’s easier to get
adapted. I never lost contact with
my friends and parents. With Skype,
I know what’s going on with them,
and they know what I’m doing. I
have a new world here, basically,
but I stay in touch with both worlds.
And that helps me stay focused on
my work.”

like fried eggplants with

of meat, especially kebab.
A favorite dish, with
recipe: Potato balls: Bake
some potatoes, mash them
and form them into balls,
roll them in egg and then
in seasoned bread crumbs,
and fry.
Another favorite dish,
with recipe: Iskender
kebab: Cut pita bread into
squares, add thin slices of
meat, pour tomato sauce
over it, and then melted
butter. Serve with plain
yogurt.
Advice for students: Set
your targets at a slightly
higher level for you. Work
towards them with patience
and determination. In this
way you will have used
your limited time most
efficiently to improve
yourself.

uring a recent internship
with the Washington
State Legislature, I had
a fascinating conversation with a
fellow intern. It was a week or two
before the health care reform bill
passed Congress, and we were talking
about the faults and merits of the bill.
My fellow intern, whom we shall call
Bob, at one point in the conversation
blurted out, “Well, I don’t think we
should be so focused on cost and that
sort of stuff. The Democrats just
need to tell the Republicans, ‘Look,
children are dying each day because
they don’t have health care. What is
your f***ing problem? How can you
live with yourself with that on your
conscience?’”
Since this conversation, I have
noticed that Bob is not the only person
with this idea. When asked whether
of the health care reform passage,
California Attorney General Jerry
Brown said something remarkably
similar. “Health care is not the place,
with people’s lives at stake, to engage
in poisonous partisanship. At this
critical time in our nation’s history,
we need to come together to forge a
common purpose.”
Both my friend Bob and Attorney
General Brown are apparently
making their decisions based on fear:
fear that more people will die without
health care. But as most of us learn
the hard way, rage and fear do not
encourage good decisions.
Sadly, the health care reform
package has proved just that. With
the best of intensions, our senators
and representatives passed a reform
package that is unjust.
“Unjust?” you say. “How so?”
The near-universal health care
spending. This contradicts the words
of President Obama and virtually
every other proponent of the reform
package, but it is still true. One need
only look at Europe to see the logical
fact that more people on the pubic
option means more government
spending. There is simply no way
around it!
If there is more spending, there
must be more revenue, which means
more taxes for Americans. By
the classical meaning of justice,
to forcefully take something that
someone has honestly earned and
give it to someone else is unjust.
This concept may be a little
difficult to understand, given that
modern government does a great deal
of this sort of injustice. Nor are all
taxes unjust. However, taxes for the
purpose of wealth redistribution are
unjust. And, as Senator Max Baucus
slip, increasing the public option is
an attempt to redistribute wealth.
Like all forms of injustice, we can
easily see the adverse consequences.
For one, the redistribution of wealth
invariably destroys charity. In
America, we have a great diversity
of charities reflecting the unique
worldviews of our diverse culture. In
Europe, this is not the case.
Some years ago, I met the founder
of the Netherlands’ Edmund Burke
Society. He explained that it was
very difficult for non-profits like his
to get donations because virtually all
of the charities in Europe are state-
funded. In short, few Europeans have
any money to give to independent
charities because the government
traditionally does their charity for
them.
When humans are robbed of their
ability to give to the causes they
expect the government to deal with
the problem. Such an attitude ruins
community and robs people of the
ability to make a difference by choice.
Ironically, the increased rate of
wealth redistribution we are seeing in
America is a sign of the abandonment
of hope. It is a sign that we do not
believe that families and communities
can again care for the needy around
them. And if this belief is true, than
my friend Bob has reason to be angry.
But for my part, I am reminded that
despair is a grievous and destructive
error. For despair is for those who
see the future beyond a shadow of a
doubt, as Tolkien instructs us in his
mythology. President Obama and
those who supported the health care
reform have despaired of finding
virtue in the American people. But
in their despair, they risk destroying
many good things.

hopeful. By passing this bill,
the Democrats have committed
political suicide. I guarantee you that the
Democrats will lose control of the House
of Representatives, if not the Senate as
well. I am hopeful because the Tea Party
movement is exponentially gathering
momentum. Just like on December 7, 1941,
our enemies have awakened a sleeping
giant. At least thirteen states have filed a
lawsuit against the federal government, and
many other states including Washington
State have filed legislation that would
nullify this health care bill.
Yes, I referred to our non-representing
representatives as our enemies. I stand by
that belief. Anyone who does not represent
the will of the American people in Congress
is my enemy, and I hope that you will stand
with me in this regard.
I honor the Democrats however that stood
with Republicans and the American people.
These are true heroes and I can assure you
that almost all of those Democrats will be
would be given a number of options. The
bill would not be able to be repealed unless
the Republicans could gather enough allies
for a two-thirds majority in Congress. But
Congress holds the power of the purse as
thusly would be able to starve the bill and
effectively kill it through lack funding.
So join me friends, in voting out all
members of Congress in the House and the
Senate who voted for this health care bill.
Write your State representatives and tell
them to bring forth and vote for legislation
to deny the federal government their health
care mandate. There is still a bright future
for America, but it will not last unless you
make your voices heard.

The fight is not over. Congress, Mr.
President… we will see you at the polls.
the other day to tell me that our dog,
Boston, ate the neighbor’s cat. My
mom had taken him to the vet to see what was wrong
with him, as eating a cat was extremely out of his
character. After reading the text, I started laughing.
Uncontrollably. For some reason, the image of my
chill, nice dog eating a whole cat was hilarious. I
didn’t really find it that out of character since Boston
has always hated cats. I told my sister about my
laughing issue, and she just kept telling me that it
was ‘really sad’. That made me laugh more. I did feel
bad for laughing though. Not because of the cat, but
because we were talking about WWII in class. WWII
isn’t funny. Most of my class was glaring at me.
Understandable. My teacher was pissed. Reasonable.
Forty minutes later, I received another text from my
sister reading, “April Fools!” Well played....
I
was going to write about health care
reform. But I only have a few things that
I wanted to say
1) It’s not as bad as it seems (example:
Extension on insurance from your parents to 26)
2) I’m angry (but not surprised) that both sides
of the issue were profusely lying about the bill
(Democrats said it was social health care, it’s not
by any means. Republicans saying that its going
to kill the elderly, it’s not by any means.)
3) The Democrats broke ancient procedures
left and right to get it passed as fast as they did.
That’s all I really have to say on the matter.
