Alejandro Aravena is an architect of the Catholic University of Chile (1992). He established his
independent practice in 1994 after studying History and Theory at the Universit IUAV di Venezia
and enrolling at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. He was a visiting professor at the Graduate
School of Design at Harvard University between 2000 and 2005, and was named the International
Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2010. Honoured with awards such as the Silver
Lion at the XI Venice Biennale (2008), the Marcus Prize (2009) and Erich Schelling Medal (2006), his
work has been presented at the So Paulo Biennial (2007), the Triennial Milan (2008), the Venice
Biennale (2008 and 2012), the MoMA in New York (2010) and MA Gallery in Tokyo (2011). Aravena
has been named one of the 20 New Heroes of the World by Monocle magazine, and his work has
been widely published in more than 50 countries. He currently serves on the advisory boards of
the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and the Cities Program of the London
School of Economics, and is also is a member of the Pritzker Prize jury. Since 2006, Aravena has
been the Executive Director of ELEMENTAL, a "do-tank" in partnership with COPEC and the
Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, which develops housing and infrastructure projects that
focus on social impact and public interest.
