he Amigos de Bolsa Chica are excited to announce a number of special events to be held
in honor of their 40th Anniversary in 2016.
The Amigos de Bolsa Chica was founded by a
handful of Orange County residents in 1976 who
were concerned that developers were about to turn
one of the last remaining Saltwater Wetlands along
the southern California coast into a concrete harbor
and housing developments.
The signature event of our anniversary year will
be the premiere in February of a professionally produced documentary about the decades of struggle
it took to turn polluted oil fields and a damaged
ecosystem into the publicly owned ecological reserve it is today.
The Amigos de Bolsa Chica endeavor to use public education as a key communication tool. The
Amigos originated tours the Bolsa Chica wetlands
and continue to support them in a number of formats.
The Amigos will be hosting a vibrant list of experts during our first ever Bolsa Chica Science
Symposium in April. We expect this event to become the foremost information source for the Orange County community on new and developing
science related to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands while
witnessing ever increasing recovery and bio diversity.
A Program of Work and Calendar of events can
be found inside.

Sue DeWerff
ust more than 50 years ago, Satellite Beachs Pete
Dooley landed a part time job shaping surfboards
as a way to earn money to attend college.
His plan was to get an education but the degree he
initially sought ended up changing after learning the art
of shaping surfboards. His decision to use his earnings
to pool together with several friends back in 1968 to
manufacture and sell surfboard designs ended up becoming a lifelong career and a journey that has since
led him to international fame in the industry.
Dooley, now 66, the co-founder of Natural Art surfboards, originated in 1971, has created custom surfboards that have been ridden by both world class surfers
and recreational surfers internationally. The company
now has a production factory in Brazil as well as the
U.S.
Dooley has traveled around the world and been a part
of a design team that once manufactured more than
5,000 surfboards a year during the 1980s in an era
when short boards were just beginning to evolve. His
mission has always been to
bring a sport he is passionate about along with nature and art together. And
he certainly has accomplished that according to
his peers.
But for Dooley, his
most recent accomplishment as a 2015 inductee
into the International
Surfboard Builders Hall
of Fame earlier this
month is one he admits
is one of the highlights
of his career.

The Wooden Bowl

A

frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson.
The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was
blurred, and his step faltered.
The family ate together at the table. But the elderly
grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult.. Peas rolled off his
spoon onto the floor.
When he grasped the glass, milk
spilled on the tablecloth. The son and
daughter-in-law became irritated
with the mess.
'We must do something about father,' said the son. 'I've had enough
of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and
food on the floor.'
So the husband and wife set a small
table in the corner.
There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest
of the family enjoyed dinner.
Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his
food was served in a wooden bowl.
When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction,
sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.
Still, the only words the couple had for him were
sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled
food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.
One evening before supper, the father noticed his
son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He
asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?'
Just as sweetly, the boy responded, 'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food
in when I grow up. '
The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents so that they were
speechless. Then tears started to stream down their
cheeks.. Though no word was spoken, both knew
what must be done.
That evening the husband took Grandfather's
hand and gently led him back to the family table.
For the remainder of his days he ate every meal
with the family. And for some reason, neither husband
nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was
dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what

happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and
it will be better tomorrow.
I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by
the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day,the
elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree
lights.
I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same
thing as making a 'life.'
I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second
chance.
I've learned that you
shouldn't go through life
with a catcher's mitt on
both hands.You need to be
able to throw something back
sometimes.
I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you.
But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the
needs of others, your work and doing the very best
you can, happiness will find you.
I've learned that whenever I decide something with
an open heart, I usually make the right decision.
I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't
have to be one.
I've learned that every day, you should reach out
and touch someone.
People love that human touch -- holding hands, a
warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.
I've learned that you should pass this on to everyone
you care about. I just did!

Nations First Large-scale,

Carbon Neutral Desalination
Facility - HB

s California leaders head

to Paris this week for the
World Climate Summit
(COP 21), Poseidon Water recently announced its proposed
seawater desalination plant in
Huntington Beach will be the nations first large-scale desalination
facility to be 100 percent carbon
neutral.
California has shown unprecedented leadership in addressing
climate change, both by government policy and private investment, said Scott Maloni,
Poseidon Vice President. We are
proud to be a part of this effort.
Our desalination technology and
greenhouse gas reduction plan
will not only help communities
become water independent and
less susceptible to drought, but
will do so in an energy efficient
and environmentally responsible
way.
This project is exciting news
for more employment opportunities in Southern California and
presents a responsible way to secure and insure our states water
supply in the face of climate
change and during future
droughts, said Senator Kevin de
Len, President pro Tempore of
the California State Senate. Poseidons resolute
commitment to
offset all carbon
emissions shows
how companies
can really grow
this
economy
while at the same
time protecting
our environment
and the air we
breathe.
The announcement comes on the
heels of the recently completed 50
million gallon per a day desalination facility in Carlsbad, which
will officially open before the end
of the December. To date, the
Carlsbad facility is the nations
largest, most technologically advanced and energy-efficient desalination plant.
Poseidons reverse osmosis
process does not emit greenhouse

gases. In addition, the companys

Energy Minimization and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan (GHG
Plan) commits to offsetting
100% of the Huntington Beach facilitys direct emissions from construction prior to the plants
commercial operation, and then
on a yearly basis Poseidon will
zero out the indirect emissions associated with the purchase of electricity to operate the plant.
When complete, the Huntington
Beach Desalination Project will
provide Orange County with 50
million gallons of fresh drinking
water per day from the Pacific
Ocean, matching the companys
Carlsbad plant as the largest seawater desalination plant in the
Western Hemisphere.
The energy used to desalinate
seawater comes from the electrical
grid, which is fed by power plants
that may create GHG emissions.
Due to this, Poseidon has offered
to voluntarily commit to offsetting
the indirect GHG emissions associated with the Projects purchase
of electricity even though it is not
required by law.
The GHG Plan outlines Poseidons approach to avoid, reduce,
and mitigate emissions from the
construction and operation of the

jects gross indirect GHG emissions by multiplying its electricity

use by the emissions factor assigned to Southern California Edison. Poseidon will then offset its
indirect emissions through the
purchase of Climate Reserve
Tonnes (CRTs) and carbon offsets,
and Renewable Energy Credits
(RECs) or the investment in projects that offset carbon emission
(e.g. reforestation).
Poseidon will also implement
state-of-the-art desalination and
energy recovery technologies to
minimize energy consumption.
One such feature is the use of a
state-of-the art pressure exchanger-based energy recovery
system that allows recovery and
reuse of over 40% of the energy
associated with the reverse osmosis (RO) process. The Huntington
Beach project will also recover
approximately 2,100 tons of CO2
annually from the reverse osmosis
purification process and reuse that
CO2 during the post-treatment
process.
Poseidon Water specializes in
developing and financing water
infrastructure projects, primarily
seawater desalination and water
treatment plants in an environmentally sensitive manner. These

proposed Huntington Beach Desalination Project. Since offsetting

indirect GHG emissions is an ongoing process dependent on dynamic information, the plan
establishes a protocol for identifying, securing, monitoring and updating measures each year to
eliminate the Projects carbon
footprint.
Poseidon will calculate the pro-

innovative public-private partnerships in which private enterprise

rganized by the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army and the American Legion
Post 716 Family was recently held on Sunday, November 8th started at the Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) in Los
Alamitos to honor our Veterans of all services and all wars to
the Nation while raising funds to support the Veterans Services
Center located at the JFTB. They also honored Huntington
Beach with a pass through ride.

The Veterans Honor Ride is called to action for citizens to

honor our Veterans and the Troops stationed at our local military installations: the Joint Forces Training Base and the Seal
Beach Naval Weapons Station. It also sent all the right messages to our Troops and their Families on the evening of the
Veterans Day. This was a unique opportunity for the communities to show our support by saluting our military and the units
at the JFTB for their extraordinary sacrifices over the last 13
years of war. All profits go to support different Veteran programs at the Veterans Services Center located at the JFTB in
Los Alamitos, CA. The ride cruised through 13 cities in Orange
County and one stop at the VA Long Beach providing an opportunity for fellow citizens to salute your service. The ride included three ceremonies: (1) The first was at the beginning
with the posting of the Colors and National Anthem by Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy at JFTB and a short speech
honoring those who have served by Major General (USA, Ret.)
Paul Mock; (2) The second ceremony was a Remembrance Ceremony honoring our Wounded Warriors, Prisoners of War, and
Missing in Action remarks by Brigadier General (USA, Ret.)
James Combs, and history of Purple Heart by LTC (USA, Ret.)
Tom Lasser and music by LA Fifes & Drums Corps; and (3) The
final ceremony was at the American Legion Post 716 in Los
Alamitos with special remarks by Brigadier General, Vietnam
Veteran, James Combs with Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran
medal presentation with the Post Commander James Eubanks
to Vietnam Veterans for the 50th Vietnam War Commemoration.
The day ended with a delicious steak dinner served by the
Sons of the American Legion Post 716; all proceeds from their
party will be retained by the Post for their Veteran programs.
Local dignitaries present included Assemblywoman Young
Kim, Los Alamitos Councilman Dean Grosse, the California
State Commander for Disabled American Veterans Jim Torres,
and the California Highway Patrol to name just a few. There
were 130 riders and 30 passengers from the American Legion

Its Time To Pack Up
I

the Moving Vans

ts time for our annual predictions of the

most notable sports business stories to folBy Jordan Kobritz
low in 2016.
For the second
year in a row I hit mostly winners last year, with one
notable, embarrassing exception. The winners included high expectations for Rob Manfred in his role
as the new baseball commissioner; the evolving ways
we consume sports, in-venue and outside the facility;
the expanding use of analytics which has revolutionized how we watch and analyze sports; the pursuit by
states, notably New Jersey, to adopt sports gambling;
how social media expands the opportunities for fans to
engage with teams, players and sponsors; and the economic impact of NCAA rule changes on intercollegiate
athletics.
I also predicted that the Red Sox wouldnt finish last
in the American League East for the second year in a
row. Talk about laying an egg! This year Ill leave the
final baseball predictions to others. In no particular
order, here are the biggest stories Ill be watching this
year.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement between
Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association is set to expire on December 1. This used to be big news, back in the day
when the expiration of the CBA was guaranteed to lead to a lockout or a strike.
After suffering through eight work stoppages in 22 years, MLB is now the poster
child for labor peace. While significant differences exist on a number of issues, I
anticipate the announcement of an agreement in advance of the deadline.
If you think the concussion story has played itself out, think again. Its an issue
that isnt going away, at least not anytime soon. The new movie Concussion is expected to be a box-office smash. It will also fuel the controversy surrounding Americas favorite sport. Although the NFL isnt alone when the medical community

on

Sports

raises the issue of concussions, the publics insatiable appetite with all things football
shines a spotlight on the sport at all levels.
Sticking with the NFL, the boardroom
machinations leading up to the decision
granting a team or teams access to the
Los Angeles market will be must viewing. Will the winner be St. Louis, led by
Stan Kroenke and his single-team stadium plan? Or will San Diego and Oakland, with their dual-stadium proposal,
pack up the moving vans?
Another story that bears watching this
year is the continuing saga of daily fantasy games. A number of states have
ruled that daily fantasy games constitute
gambling. That conclusion is hardly surprising to objective observers. The activity was specifically exempted from the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 precisely because without an exemption, daily fantasy games
couldnt have gained traction.
There you have it, my predictions of
the biggest sports business stories of
2016. Check back in 12 months to see how clairvoyant I am.

You Yellow Bellied...

N
orman Tucker is sharing this tid
bit..."Commonly found in tropical waters, the snake lives its
entire life at sea and reportedly congregates in groups of thousands.
Like the last one found in October,
the sea snake was dead by the time a
volunteer had found it. It was unclear
whether it was alive when it initially
washed up on the beach.
It is believed that because of El Nio
and climate change, the waters closer to
shore are warmer than they should be, and
the snake came searching for eels and fish,
which it paralyzes using its potent venom.
The species can stay underwater for up to
three hours, and has the ability to swim both
backward and forward.

An extremely venomous yellow-bellied

snake, only documented to have washed
ashore in California twice before, was
found dead on in Huntington Beach Thursday, the Surfrider Foundation said.
Initial sightings of the toxic snake happened back in October on Silverstrand
Beach in Oxnard, CA.

STRONG WOMEN -

Who says mothers aren't powerful?

Esther Carlstone (mom.me) tells us about: HANNAH DAVIS

Hannah Davis (1784-1863) was a successful entrepreneur and

one of the first documented female inventors. Born and raised in
Jaffrey, New Hampshire, the unmarried Davis was forced to support herself after the death of her parents. Davis was an experienced woodworker, a craft she had learned from her father. She
began a cottage business designing bandboxes covered in popular
wallpaper patterns. Controlling the entire process, Davis selected
and supervised the cutting of the lumber for the boxes and invented a foot-powered machine to cut the strips of wood needed
for their construction. Daviss successful business and marketing
plan became a model in her time for women entrepreneurs.

About the
Dry Martini Cocktail

The Dry Martini is a classic cocktail that, like a tailored

suit, is timeless. Although the original of the tipple is unclear, the Dry Martini has maintained a place in cocktail
history due to being easy to use and endlessly sophisticated. Elegant for the fancy and boozy for the heavyhanded, this potation is truly the everyman's cocktail.

goal (as compared to 2013) because some had been
conserving while others hadnt.
Huntington Beach
residents and businesses rose to the occasion and surpassed the
city target of 20 percent with an actual reduced consumption of
25.1 percent.
Groundwater reliability during this historic drought was due
in part to the manner in
which OCWD has
been managing this
local resource for more
than 80 years. Most importantly in 2015, the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) Initial Expansion came online to provide an additional 30 million
gallons of water per day (MGD) to the basin. This is
enough water for 850,000 people.
The $142 million initial expansion not only in-

creases output to 100 MGD, it also decreases dependence on costly imported water, uses less energy required to transport imported water, provides reliability
in an area plagued by cyclical droughts, and protects

the environment by decreasing the amount of

wastewater in our ocean
and reusing a precious resource.
In 2015, the District also
launched a new website
(www.ocwd.com). Transparency and accountability
are imperative to achieving its mission to provide
a reliable, high quality
water supply in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner. The new website includes
extensive documents and information that address

OCWDs motivations for its management

practices and decisions.
The New Year has started with hope and promise.
We all look forward, with trepidation, to El Nio
and the rain it could bring. If it does rain heavily,
it will make significant impact on Orange
County as the District can capture much of the
rainwater in its groundwater basin. OCWD has
also partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to capture additional stormwater behind
Prado Dam.
In 2016, OCWD will also unveil new educational programs for Orange County adults and
children and offer a well-established program
once more. The Childrens Water Education Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary. The Festival instructs more than 7,000 Orange County elementary
school students each year about water and the environment. The O.C. Water Hero Program, which debuted
in 2007, helps children champion water conservation
and is undergoing an extensive addition to including a
smartphone application.
Every year, OCWD hosts more than 4,000 guests for
tours of its facilities. This coming year, guests will receive a heightened experience as the OCWD corridor
has been transformed into an educational center that
will be incorporated in each tour. Those of you who
have taken a tour in the past, might want to sign-up
again as the new corridor features videos and handson experiences. Contact Coordinator Becky Mudd
(BMudd@ocwd.com) to make your reservation.

EarthTalk

Dear EarthTalk:
How are borderlands causing wideenvironmental
spread
damage while splintering families and communities
across the U.S. Southwest?
-- Peter Jackson, Baltimore, MD

Today, over 650 miles of border walls and barriers

have been constructed in all four southern Border
States: California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
The Sierra Club Borderlands campaign has spoken up
against the substantial
border wall construction, arguing that it has
had dire consequences
for vast expanses of
pristine wild lands, including
wildlife
refuges, wilderness
areas and national forest lands, among other
areas. Additionally,
several species of
wildlife have been observed
and
photographed stranded by
the border wall, the
group states, suggesting that many threatened and endangered
species are suffering
from border wall development as well.
In their short films, Wild Versus Wall and Too
Many Tracks, the Sierra Club describes how the significance of the borderlandsa vast and ecologically
distinct region with a multitude of mountain ranges,
two of North Americas four deserts and major river
ecosystemshas been ignored by current U.S. border

policy. The borderlands provide important habitat for

rare and threatened wildlife species, including many
federally-listed threatened and endangered species.
But in 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act,
which included a provision that allows the Secretary
of Homeland Security to waive all local, state and
federal laws, including the Endangered Species Act,
deemed an impediment to building walls and roads
along U.S. borders. Border patrol has now built stadium-like lights, roads and towers in sensitive, remote
areas, the Sierra Club says, and the roads fragment
and destroy habitat while high voltage lighting affects

borderland habitat degradation with the hope that they

can combat further border wall development that may
pose harm to the environment and wildlife. In a November 2015 trip to a U.S-Mexico border wall in Bisbee, Arizona, Millis told Borderlands campaigners
how the jaguar is an emblematic species for why this
wall is problematicIts important for wildlife, like
the jaguar, to be able to have access to a range. The
jaguar used to live in the United States, all the way
up to the Grand Canyon the jaguars critical habitat
has been established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service and it includes areas that are bisected by these
walls. And thats really problematic if we want to see
a very majestic species like the jaguarwere going
to have to these problems like this border wall seriously.
Millis also informed the campaigners of several
other ecological issues associated with border development, including increased erosion, flooding and
soil degradation. Were encouraging Border Patrol
and Homeland Security to keep this stuff in mind as
they move forward on projects, Millis said. They
need to do things in a way that is more sustainable.

nocturnal animals ability to feed and migrate.

Border Patrols off-road driving, tire dragging and
ATV use in designated roadless wilderness has left an
immense scar on the landscape, said Dan Millis, borderlands program coordinator for the Grand Canyon

Rare & Weird Facts

About World War II

Moe Kanoudi

We've all seen "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of

Brothers," but here's a list of facts from World War II that
you probably didn't know.

The first German serviceman killed in the war was

killed by the Japanese.

Over 100,000 Allied bomber crewmen were killed over

Europe.

More U.S. servicemen died in the Air Corps then the

Marine Corps.

Polish Catholic midwife Stanisawa Leszczyska delivered 3,000 babies at the Auschwitz concentration camp
during the Holocaust in occupied Poland.

In 1941, more than three million cars were manufactured in the United States. Only 139 more were made during the entire war.

Four of every five German soldiers killed in the war died

on the Eastern Front

Only 20 percent of the males born in the Soviet Union

in 1923 survived the war.

The Local News, January 01, 2016 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

In World War II, the youngest serviceman in the United

26

States military was Calvin Graham - age 12. Graham

lied about his age when he enlisted in the US Navy. His
real age was not discovered until after he was wounded.
(Unbelievable)

Only one out of every four men serving on U-boats survived.

The Siege of Stalingrad resulted in more Russian

deaths (military and civilian)
than the United States and Britain sustained (combined) in all of World War II.

To avoid using the German sounding name 'hamburger' during World War II, Americans used the name
'Liberty Steak.'

Adolf Hitler's nephew, William Hitler, served in the US

Navy during World War II !!!

Adolph Hitler and Henry Ford each kept a framed picture of the other on his desk.

During World War II, the largest Japanese spy ring was
actually located in Mexico.

The mortality rate for POWs in Russian camps was 85

percent.

Had it been necessary for a third atom bomb, the city

targeted would have been Tokyo.

An Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer, who

fought in World War II, Hiroo Onoda never surrendered
in 1945. Until 1974, for almost 30 years, he held his position in the Philippines. His former commander traveled
from Japan to personally issue orders relieving him from
duty in 1974. (???)
Total casualties for World War II totaled between 50 70 million people, 80 percent of which came from only four
countries - Russia, China, Germany and Poland. Over 50
percent of the casualties were civilians, with the majority
of those being women and children.

The 8 Top FEMALE Racers

(Competing with Danica Patrick)

anica Patrick has established herself as the hottest female driver around, but we beg to differ. Below are
eight female race drivers who bump Danica out of
the starting field in the looks department.
But before we begin, for years there have been male race
car drivers whove been considered hunks, studs, hot, dreamboats, or matinee idols, depending upon your age and era. So
it is with no reluctance that weve identified the most beautiful women in motorsports. In no way is this gratuitous, as
these are all dedicated, hard-working drivers with clear goals
to advance as far as possible in motorsports. So lets start the
countdown starting with driver number eight

Jessica Barton

Jessica Barton is a model, an actress, and a serious import

drag racer. Shes not driving some wimpy FWD Civic, but a
full-on
fire-breathing
Toyota Supra that produces 1,165 horsepower at
the rear wheels. Her best
run to date was at the 2011
US Army World Cup Finals at Maryland International Raceway, where she
set an E.T. of 8.64 and a
top speed of 170.88 miles
per hour. Sadly, in 2013
the Supra was stolen and
stripped of any parts of
value and hen chopped into pieces. What was left of the car
was recovered along with some personal belongings. Jessica
estimated that shed spent at least $150,000 on the car. Jessica
is hoping to recover as much of the car as possible but in the
meantime is focusing on her acting and modeling career.

Susie (Stoddard) Wolff

Wow!

Claire Jedrek is a celebrity fitness trainer and television

personalty in her native Singapore. She
became interested in motorsports as part
of broadcast team covering Formula 1
events. She started off in karts and then
moved into the Malaysian Super Series
(MSS) where she drove a Honda FD2
in a support race for 2014 Malaysian
Formula 1 support race, At seasons end
she finished 7th in points against 36
competitors, all men. For 2015 shell return with her Honda FD2 and is training
both physically and mentally, spending
at least 1.5 hours per day on a race simulator.

Vicky Piria

Vittoria Vicky Piria

was born in Milan, Italy to
an Italian Father and a
British mother. Like so
many young drivers Vicky
started in karts at age 10,
when she won the regional
championship for her class.
Se moved up into cars via
Formula Renault and Formula Abarth, and Formula 3.
Shes now competing in the
US Pro Mazda series.

Madalena Antas

Hailing from Portugal, Madalena

Antas is the daughter of a famous female race car driver in that country.
Madalena compete in Rally-Raid
events, flying across scorching hot
sand dunes at the wheel of a Nissan
44.

The biggest ouch has to be the comments of a former teammate who said she couldnt develop a roll of film, much less
a Formula 1 car.

Maryeve Dufault

When you hear

that Maryeve Dufault had been voted
Hawaiian
Miss
Tropic, appeared as
a model in The
Price is Right and
had her own spread
in Maxim, you
might not think
shes a serious racer,
but youd be wrong.
She said that while
other models were
spending
their
money on clothes,
she was spending it on tire (our kind of girl!) Maryeve started
racing karts in her native Quebec at the age of 8, winning several championships, before moving up to formula car classes,
including Formula BMW USA. Shes switched to stock cars
and has made some positive impressions, with a goal of a fulltime ride in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.

Inessa Tushkanova

OK, Inessa has posed for Playboy in Eastern Europe. Ok,

Inessa has posed for Playboy several times in Eastern Europe.
But shes also a damn good rally driver. Shes won a few rallies in Russia, but is now driving in the Finnish Rally Championship. And if you want to compete against the best, then
Finland is your place, I mean the country has produced drivers like Marcus Grnholm, Tommi Mkinen and Juha
Kankkunen who, with others, have delivered 13 Drivers
World Rally Championships to Finland. Yep, its the right
place to learn.

Carmen Jorda
Spanish-born Carmen Jorda
has found herself in the middle
of a enormous controversy
these last few weeks. Shes
been selected by the Lotus
Formula 1 team as their designated development driver.
Critic claim that decision was
based more on the money an
attractive female might generate than on her driving talent,
having never won a race in her
10 year motorsports career.

You can check out some of Inessas early rally driving in

the video below. Her speed and car control are as least as impressive as her Playboy spreads.

Born Susie Stoddard in Oban, Scotland took the same path

as most young drivers do. She
started in karts and then into the
entry-level Formula Renault single-seater race series in Great
Britain. She was set to take the
next step up the ladder to Formula 1 with a ride with a Formula 3 team the following year.
An off-season ankle injury
forced her to miss the season.
Amazingly the following season
didnt find her in the low-powered F3 car but in a hairy 500
horsepower tube-frame Mercedes in the German Touring Car
Championship (DTM), where
she raced for 6 seasons. In 2012 she was named a developmental driver for the Williams Formula 1 team. Sort of amazing for a driver whos never won a race in a car. Oh, I forget
to mention, she married to the boss of the DTM and a major
shareholder of the Williams F1 team?

Fed Rates Up
Mortgage Rates
Down

t finally happened. For the first

time since June of 2006, the Federal Reserve raised the
benchmark Fed Funds rate by 0.25%. Immediately
afterwards, banks raised the prime lending rate
by the same 0.25%. While this increase has a
direct impact on certain variable rate products such as Home Equity Lines of Credit
(HELOCs), this increase in the benchmark rate has no direct impact on mortgage rates. As a surprise to many,
mortgage rates actually improved slightly
after the Feds announcement.
Mortgage bonds, or mortgage-backed
securities (MBS), are traded as futures.
The bonds that are traded today are for
mortgages that will be securitized weeks
from now. As such, there is much speculation that goes into their trading. In other
words, just the expectation of an event taking place
can be as much of a driving force as the actual
event itself.
The Feds move was not a surprise. Quite the contrary. This
move had been broadcast well in advance. Just the day prior,
markets had the odds at 80% probability that the Fed would
raise rates. As it turns out, the Fed did exactly what was
expected. Certainty can be a very good thing for financial markets. The absence of uncertainty allows
traders to place their bets with more confidence,
thereby boosting those financial markets. This is
one of the reasons why we saw mortgage rates improve after the Feds announcement.
The move also served to strengthen the US Dollar, providing additional leverage to boost mortgage bonds and push mort-

gage rates to the

downside. MBS are traded in US Dollars. A strengthening dollar is
generally good for mortgage rates as it attracts more investors from
around the world.
Perhaps most importantly, the Fed exhibited its commitment to
keep mortgage rates low by renewing its policy of rolling over
MBS securities as they reach
maturity, and reinvesting the
principal payments from other
agency holdings. In short, the Federal Reserve is going to remain accommodative and anticipates doing
so until normalization of the federal
funds rate is well under way, according
to Janet Yellens statement following the release of the official Fed minutes.
Regulating inflation and GDP are the two primary objectives of the Federal Reserve. Presently,
inflation and GDP both remain
well below the Feds ideal
range, giving them license
to remain accommodative for quite some
time still. The
bottom line on all
this is that mortgage
rates are likely to remain low until
well into 2016.
