A) Heat transfer from condenser shall be to ambient air for air cooled chiller,
whereas for water cooled chiller the condenser coils are surrounded by
secondary coolant water and the water is further cooled by air in cooling tower
for recirculation to condenser of chiller.
The above difference is by working; however other accessories like valves,
pumps will also be there, there by concluding the ikW/TR for the same capacity
of chiller for commercial advantage.
2) Criteria of chiller selection
Availability of treated water (i.e. water softening plant), ambient temperature
and wet bulb temperature for peak summer and daily range for respective
location etc;
Selection parameters: gpm, Inlet and outlet temperatures, fouling factors at
evaporator and condenser

Why GI pipe is used from Chiller to Cooling Tower and MS pipe between
Chiller to AHU
Normally the condenser pipes are is open piping and almost exposed to
atmosphere and they carry hot water from condenser of chiller to cooling tower.
since they carry hot water near to ambient condition no surface insulation is
required. hence GI pipes are used as they have zinc coating resisting humid
conditions. MS pipes are relatively cheaper and they too have resisting coating,
but they corrode when exposed to humid conditions. also they are relatively
cheaper than GI pipes. Chilled water pipe need insulation and mechanical
protection as well; because they carry water at 45 deg F. chilled water pipes are
insulated to avoid condensation and reduce the heat transfer rate from
surrounding environment to water medium flowing in the pipe. apart from
insulation and mechanical protection we also apply tarfelt as vapour barrier for
Chilled water pipe and Condenser water pipe.
