INTRODUCING INTERNET OF THINGS IN FRUITS &

VEGETABLES BUSINESS
DIVISION E [ROLL NO 2, 14, 32, 46]
INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
-

India ranks second in fruits and vegetable production in the world,

after China
As per National Horticulture Database published by National
Horticulture Board, during 2012-13 India produced 81.285 million
metric tonnes of fruits and 162.19 million metric tonnes of
vegetables
India has the distinction of producing almost all-tropical and exotic
fruits and vegetables due to its varied climatic conditions
Due to short shelf life of these produce, as much as 30-35% of fruits
and vegetables perish during harvest, storage, grading, transport,
packaging and distribution
Surprisingly, only 2% of these crops are processed into
value-added products
So, there is a need for maximum commercial utilisation of fruits and
vegetables and to adapt Mobility and Technological solutions in
addition to production and marketing activities to the requirements
of the world market and to cater to domestic demand at the time of
exports and imports

EMERGING TECH AND BENEFITS

-

We are a company specialising in fruits and vegetables business. We

would like to implement Internet of Things in our business
processes to achieve profitability, competitive advantage and to
streamline our management and production. We then share our
real-time data in controlled environment to customers and
suppliers through Mobile app which have information about
availability of various fruits and vegetables on temporal basis

Benefits
-

IoT uses RFID tags, infrared and motion sensors, GPA and laser
scanners and communicate with devices connected to internet to
exchange information
RFID tags on fruits and vegetables and packs can provide real-time
data of them
Latency sensitive services enable us to know about the
temperature, quality of fruit produce through infrared and motion
sensors
GPS services would enable us to track, coordinate and optimise
route planning of our trucks and vehicles to reach destination on
time
Implementation of mobility solutions would also improve our
relations with customers and suppliers through restricted real-time
data(through mobile app which is synchronised with information
regarding availability of produce and demand of produce)
We can streamline our operational procedures and gain competitive
edge and probably reduce our operational cost
In addition, we would create an app that would:
- Keep buyers continually updated on the availability of various fruits
and their freshness
- Allow buyers to order exotic fruits that may not be available locally
- Give suppliers and manufacturers the ability to track how and
where their fruits are transported
- Give increased customer insights through in app analytics
- Ratings to suppliers based on customer reviews to keep a check on
quality
- Automatic reordering through digitized inventory checks

The technology under consideration here is GPS tracking and sensor

based information broadcasting. A few simple sensors can be installed in
each transport vehicle. These sensors will be able to tell how much the
temperature is throughout the journey. The sensor can also describe the
vibration, dust levels and weight of the boxes so as to avoid pilfering and
help improve quality.

CHALLENGES AND PROPOSED IDEA

Deployment Challenges: Integration of Internet of things into ERP and
then integrating real-time data into mobile app is going to be difficult
either because of compatibility of software issues or hardware issues

Security Challenges: Since data is being shared between various systems

and since data is being available on ERP cloud, security challenges may
arise and hence restriction on data sharing should be implemented
Training Challenges: Training staff to get hands on experience with new
deployment is going to be a challenge due to cost and time and
receptiveness of staff towards the technological change
Procedural Challenges: With introduction of this technology, operational
procedures and business processes in production, IT and marketing
department might get affected from organisational perspective
Implementation:
We use Protoyping model to deploy proposed system because:
-

Our business model requires extensive interaction with end users

This model is suited for web interface systems on large scale
systems
This model can get feedback from users regularly and that we can
identify errors much earlier. We can also identify missing
functionalities in system
