Paper #3
As a future manager of a global institution, I will be expected to manage across cultures
while attempting to respect every one of my coworkers viewpoints, cultural traditions, and
religious beliefs. This is why choosing a global institution with a culture that fits my personality
is important to me because it will allow me to operate and manage coworkers with more
confidence and ease. This is because the culture or pattern of accepted behavior of an
institution cuts across national boundaries. However, even though an institutions culture can be
singular across different nations, it still must adhere to the cultural norms in the society in which
it is operating in. Institutions that are headquarter in core states must adhere to the policies and
cultural norms of periphery states when setting up their subsidiaries there. With institutions
operating at an increasing global scale, I will need to develop the ability to modify my
management style in specific situations and world regions in order to accommodate varying
cultural norms. Thus my management style will need to adapt to the needs of the coworkers I am
working with, even though in western culture it is the other way around. Because I am willing to
adjust my managerial behavior to facilitate teamwork amongst coworker, I will expect my
coworkers to make a similar effort. This mutual adjustment will benefit both sides to help
achieve the institutions objectives.
Having the ability to adapt and modify my management approach depending on the
situation and the people Im working with is important in an institution that operates globally.
Employees are rational actors that will do and act in their own best interest. I believe the
expansion of international management standards amongst institutions has created bureaucracy
within institutions. And as we have learned bureaucracy is constantly creating more bureaucracy
which creates a lot of complexity for managers to navigate through. I will help implement looser
management policies within the institution in order for my coworkers to adapt to external
pressures quickly. Although I would develop a flexible management style, I believe my
management style must be consistent with the institutions vision, expectations, and most
importantly rules. If change becomes necessary, I hope I have developed the will to acknowledge
that my management style needs to change openly and that I quickly come up with a game plan
to steer my coworkers and the institution in the right direction. I dont want to be a manager that
gets in the way of their coworkers performance by creating a bureaucracy of processes and tasks
that can make it hard for the team to adapt and compete with competitors at a global level.
To give my coworkers more autonomy, I would have to discover the unique strengths and
qualities of each of the coworkers I manage and figure out a way to capitalize on their skills so
that I can be confident that they are completing objectives at a professional level. I believe a
great manager would know how to value the unique abilities of the coworkers they manage and
figure out a way to best integrate them into a coordinated plan of attack to complete projects and
further the goals of the institution. To keep my coworkers motivated and challenged, I will
articulate a clear purpose that shows the difficulty of the project ahead while simultaneously
conveying to my coworkers that they have the ability to overcome the task at hand if we all work
as a cohesive unit.

To be an effective manager, I would need the flexibility to switch from the perspectives
of other cultures I am working with, rather than looking exclusively through my own western
lens. This will allow me to manage in a more confident manner when working with coworkers
from a variety of cultural backgrounds and beliefs because I will have the ability to look through
their point of view and communicate institutional objectives more clearly. Whatever institutional
path I take whether it be a private or public or perhaps an NGO, I know that my management
style must be flexible and when operating in an ever changing global economy.
