2016

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2016

Pastoral Corner
"Today, this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."
In Jesus' day almost all Jews believed in the coming of a promised Messiah. Many had different expectations of just
what the Messiah might do. Some longed for a military type leader who would drive out the hated Romans and restore
the physical Kingdom as it existed in the glory days of Solomon. Others, especially the Pharisees, expected a new
lawgiver in the tradition of Moses who would call the people back to strict obedience to the Law. Some longed to see
Israel as a light for all nations, leading all peoples to a knowledge of God and of God's loved for the People of God.
And still others had other expectations. But almost all believed.
They knew well the promises of God as announced through the prophet Isaiah, and the centuries old vision of a time
when liberty would come to captives and prisoners and all kinds of healing would take place. They believed it and they
longed for it. But they believed and they longed after the fashion of Sleeping Beauty knowing that "Someday" her
prince would come.
But what got their attention was Jesus' announcement that TODAY those promises were being fulfilled in their presence.
TODAY! RIGHT NOW! and in their very presence in the synagogue in Nazareth.
These Promises, our faith tells us, were once fulfilled in the person and ministry of Jesus Christ. However, they must
also, in the here and now of our own TODAY, be fulfilled by the life and ministry of the Church and in our own lives as
members of the Body of Christ, the Church.
How do we do this, or how should we be doing this, in the life and ministry of our parish community?
Please think for a moment about some concrete and realistic things that we as a parish, and each of us as individuals,
could undertake this Lent to help us more clearly fulfill this prophecy of Christ's continued presence in our midst.

Fr. Charlie

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD ISAAC HECKER,

FOUNDER OF THE PAULIST FATHERS
This increased infusion of the Holy Ghost in souls, with their faithful
correspondence with its inspirations, will recast all human knowledge. New

expansion of mans intelligence in the knowledge of good works will increase
His praise. [On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP at
202-269-2519 and tell him your story.

Please pray for:
