COMMUNITY MEETING FOR HAZARD MITIGATION PLANNING PROCESS PLANNED 

FOR APRIL 20 

Plan will be updated to reduce risks of loss 
  
(NEW ORLEANS) ‐‐ The City of New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness 
will host the second community meeting for the development of the 2010 Orleans Parish Hazard 
Mitigation Plan.  The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 at Regional Transportation 
Management Center, 10 Veterans Memorial Blvd, New Orleans (between Pontchartrain Blvd. and West 
End Blvd.).  The public is invited to attend. 
  
This meeting will provide the New Orleans community with important information on the results of the 
Hazard Identification, Hazard Profiling, Asset Inventory, Loss Estimates, and Risk Assessment process.  
Maps will be presented to show the geographic area at risk for each identified hazard, as well as areas at 
risk from multiple hazards.  The report will update the risk assessment prepared in 2005.   
  
Planning efforts for the 2010 Orleans Parish Hazard Mitigation Plan are coordinated with public 
agencies, private organizations, and the community to prepare for and minimize the impacts of hazards. 
  

The Planning Team for the Hazard Mitigation Plan will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, April 19, in the Homeland 
Security Conference Room, Suite 9W03 in New Orleans City Hall, 1300 Perdido St. This meeting will bring 
the planning team together to review the results of the Risk Assessment process, begin the 
development of plan goals and objectives, and review the remaining steps for the Hazard Mitigation 
Plan.  The planning team includes representatives from local and regional agencies, business and 
development organizations, academic institutions, and neighborhood groups.     
  
The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires that each Parish in Louisiana submit a new updated plan for 
approval within five (5) years of the previously approved plan.  The new updated plan must be adopted 
by the City Council and also approved by the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency 
Preparedness (GOHSEP) and FEMA to be eligible for hazard mitigation funding.  The plan will identify 
and assess risks from natural and man‐made hazards, set goals for mitigation, and create mitigation 
actions designed to be implemented over the next five years.
