Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD)

A Guide for School Teachers and Matrons.

What is Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD)?

ƒ HFMD is a viral illness which usually attacks young children.


ƒ It is usually mild but occasionally can lead to severe illness affecting the heart or
brain and may then result in death.
ƒ Adults can be affected too but they almost invariably never become seriously ill.

What are the signs and symptoms?

ƒ Fever (temperature over 37.2oC).


ƒ Rashes/blisters over hands, feet and sometimes over the buttocks, knees and
elbows.
ƒ Blisters in the mouth.
ƒ Painful mouth ulcers.

How can I prevent the spread of HFMD in schools?

ƒ Check for presence of HFMD blisters and rashes in hand, soles, mouth before
classes everyday
ƒ Inform the child’s parents immediately if child has HFMD
o Inform parents to bring child to see a doctor and don’t bring child back to
school until the child has recovered.
ƒ Inform the nearest HFMD operation rooms

ƒ Advise children to practise good personal hygiene :

o Wash hands with soap and clean water after using the toilet, after
playing and before eating.
o Cover the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.
o Maintain cleanliness of school and surroundings.
o Disinfect toilets and bathrooms using a diluted solution of chlorine-
containing bleach (10% concentration) at least twice a day.
o Wipe surfaces of tables, chairs and floors daily to ensure non
contamination.
Instructions to school’s food handlers

o Wash hands with soap and clean water after using the toilet, before preparing
food.
o Cover the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.
o Maintain cleanliness of the canteen/ mess and its surroundings.
o Clean surroundings in the canteen/mess using a diluted solution of chlorine-
containing bleach (10% solution) at least twice a day.
o Wipe surfaces of tables, chairs and floors daily to ensure non contamination.

If the child already had HFMD before, is he/she protected?

ƒ Any child /adult can have a second infection.

Why is this so?

ƒ This is because the second infection maybe caused by a different virus
