Moorestown schools
talk transgender policy
Board of education also approves hiring
of superintendent search firm in a 7 to 2 vote

Pushing arts to the forefront

Sustainable Moorestown Arts Committee created to give the arts population a voice
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Art has always been an important aspect of Moorestown.
However, it is sometimes forgot-

ten, and many arts groups in

town work independently rather
than collaboratively.
Sustainable Moorestown has
taken on the duty to push the
arts in Moorestown to the fore-

front by creating a subcommittee to represent the local arts

population. The Sustainable
Moorestown Arts Committee,
please see COMMITTEE, page 22

The Moorestown Board of Education public comment was filled

with two very different subjects
last week. Parents spoke about
the safety and comfort of their
children sharing bathrooms and
locker rooms with transgender
students. Residents also expressed their support of having
Interim Superintendent and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Carole Butler as the
new superintendent, with no
need to hire a search firm.
Butler said the school does not
have a policy for transgender students, but is following the federal
law that protects their rights
under the districts equality policy. However, the school district is
looking into creating a district
policy similar to that of the Cherry Hill district.
At last weeks meeting, a number of parents and one student expressed concerns about having
students born one gender who
identify as the opposite gender, or
transgender students, share bathrooms and locker rooms with
those who identify with their
born genders. Residents talked

about students being scared, uncomfortable and embarrassed.

Parents also felt it was not appropriate to be exposed to the opposite genders anatomy at such a
young age and that rights were
being violated.
(My daughter) was offered to
use the nurses bathroom, but I
didnt feel that was a good option.
I felt it was telling her that because she was born female and
comfortable in her female body
that she had to go somewhere
kids go when feeling sick. I didnt
feel that was fair. I didnt want her
to feel bad about wanting privacy
and wanting to feel comfortable
when she was in the bathroom,
Cindy Mumma said.
I think our daughters deserve
a right to privacy. I just hope
those rights are being considered, Kim Ferrie said.
There is no answer right now
how the school system is going to
deal with these issues. I dont
want my 11-year-old daughter
having to be exposed to a male
body part, Joe Ruccolo said.
However, citizens who spoke
felt the biggest issue was the lack
of communication. They felt they

Sorry, but I just dont buy the argument

put forth in the editorial, ACLU: The big
bully. Sure, it sounds horrible that any
group would prevent children (or anyone
else) from saying, God Bless America.
But thats not what this is about. This is
about the religious freedom our forbearers
sought when they fled the state-imposed religions of Europe. This is about the First
Amendment that states that, Congress
shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
No, it wasnt Congress that was forcing
these children to say, God Bless America.
But the First Amendment has been consistently interpreted to mean that no govern-

ment entity has the right to tell our children or us when, where, how to, or even if
to practice religion. The Haddon Heights
school district is a government entity that
has no right to impose religious beliefs on
our children. The ACLU was not the bully
here. An overreaching government entity
was the bully.
If the children want to say, God Bless
America, good for them. They should
shout it to the rafters and we should protect their right to do so. But we have no
right to tell them when, where, how or even
if they can do it.
So, whos the bully?

Flemington tell Moorestown how many affordable units (1,313) we should have in our
town?
If this number came to be approved by
the courts, it would impact the town in so
many ways.
Assuming an average of three people
per unit, that equals almost 4,000 new residents, equal to a 20 percent increase of our
current population. The school system
would be severely impacted thus a large
tax increase.
The police and fire departments would
need to be expanded. The infrastructure of
the town (the sewer system and the roads),
which is already congested, would severely
be affected.
Let us all stand up and say no to this
planner from Flemington.
Thank you.

Student starts spreading the news

to raise money for charity
Our Lady of Good Counsel third grader Marcelo Moreno creates
newscast through schools media club about Catholic Charities USA
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Giving back has always been a
big part of Our Lady of Good
Counsel Schools programs. Students and staff work together to
host fundraisers throughout the
year in a variety of ways.
Third grader Marcelo Moreno
did his duty to give back by creating a newscast video through the
schools media club and its Just
Do It Giving program, informing
people about Catholic Charities
USA and asking for those watching to donate.
I hope my video helps out
Catholic Charities, Marcelo said.
The media club and Just Do It
Giving is a program that teaches
media skills, such as television
production and film, at OLGC but
also helps to raise money for various charities that students chose
in the name of the school. With
the help of his mother Tatiana on
the script and teacher Marcie

Steel on the editing, Marcelo created a newscast informing people

about Catholic Charities USA and
asking for them to donate to the
non-profit.
In the video, Marcelo sits at a
desk as if he were a newscaster
and introduces himself before
going into what Catholic Charities is all about. It includes a
voiceover with pictures from the
organization
talking
about
Catholic Charities mission, what
it does for the community and
asking people to donate.
Catholic Charities mission is
to provide service to people in
need, to advocate for justice in social structures and to call the entire church and other people of
good will to do the same. Marcelos newscast said the organization helps with disaster relief,
housing needs, low-income families, learning opportunities and
facilitating adoptions.
Marcelo said he liked everything about creating the video. He

admitted
to
being a little
nervous, not
expecting so
many people
to watch him
as he did the
newscast, but
he said he just
brought up his
courage and
MARCELO
did it.
(I felt) proud, Marcelo said. I
like helping other people and
giving. It is good to be generous
and help other people who really
need help.
Tatiana tries to help her children reflect on what they have
and teach them many people
dont have that. If they are able to
help, Tatiana would like them to
realize they should.
I was very proud he accepted
to do this, Tatiana said. In the
beginning, I felt like I was pushplease see MARCELO, page 24

Discussing race, religion and realities

MLK Day panel hosted by Moorestown Ministerium Anti-Racism Team
Weve come a long way, but we
still have a long way to go, was
the sentiment of the first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. panel discussion on race, religion and realities. Rev. Linda Pepe of First Bap-

tist Church and Pastor Jonathan

M. Leath of Destiny Church, cochairpersons of the Moorestown
Ministerium Anti-Racism Team,
hosted the event. The discussion
was held at First Baptist Church,
and commemorated the life and
legacy of King.
A crowd of more than 50 people
gathered last Monday to share
their experiences and offer solutions of how to address racism in
the community. Leath facilitated
the conversation while Rev. Curtis Haynes of Second Baptist
Church, Pastor George Bowen of
Maranatha Church and Pepe sat
on the panel. They answered
questions and comments from the
attendees, and addressed how the
churches in the community can
be a catalyst to work toward
racial reconciliation. Haynes
talked about growing up in
Moorestown; sheltered from
much of the racism that existed

all around him, he acknowledged

that he grew to know racism is
here in town.
Moorestown has a population
of over 14,000 people, 85 percent
white and 8 percent black, according to 2014 Census, Leath said.
And its hard for everyone to afford to live in this town, therefore
home prices just keep some people out.
Much of the racial disparity in
Moorestown is because of the
home prices and taxes. Rev. Eric
Dobson, a non-resident of
Moorestown who is the outreach
coordinator for Fair Share Housing Center, talked about the current conflict in Moorestown over
affordable housing.
Pepe, who is a champion for
anti-racism, helped to frame the
conversation with a definition of
racism; racism is prejudice plus

Parents express concern at meeting

over handling of transgender policy

PARENTS
Continued from page 1
were not informed about the
school districts policy on transgender students, which has created some distrust. They asked for
open discussions and a policy
that works for all students.
We hope these things are
being discussed, to come to some
sort of decision where children
under these circumstances can
use a special room or separate
stall, if they are the opposite gender, but thinking they are the
other, Ferrie said.
I have to be honest, Im feeling
distrust. When you say you arent
going to discuss what the plans
are with the rest of our community We need answers on this
issue. I understand this is a private issue with that child, but it is
also a private issue for my daughter, Ruccolo said.
According to Butler, the school
district is following the law for
transgender students. New Jerseys Law Against Discrimination states a person is permitted
to use a sex-segregated restroom
or locker room they feel is consistent with their gender identity or
expression. Restrooms and locker
rooms in public schools fall under
Harry J.
Haeffner III

this law.
Students are provided with
four options in the school to use if
they feel uncomfortable. Those
are using the bathrooms inside
the nurses office, outside the
main office and in the fourth- and
fifth-grade wing, as well as going
to the bathroom with a buddy.
Anyone who is uncomfortable is
recommended to speak to administration.
Board Solicitor Arthur Risden
said students who identify and
are designated as transgender go
through a process that includes
medical records, doctor opinions
and guidance counseling. Legally,
if students are identified as transgender, the school cannot say
no to those students wanting to
use the bathroom of the gender
with which they identify.
Butler also said Supervisor of
Guidance Services Kat DAmbra
and middle school Principal
Matthew Keith are working on a
transition plan for transgender
students to discuss between them
and the administration that
would not be done publicly.
We are looking for everyone to
be safe and well respected under
the law, Butler said.
Butler and BOE President
Kathy Goldenberg said they are
looking into other districts policies on this issue to see if MTPS

would like to create a district policy of its own or keep with the current equality policy. Butler has
also said a parent group could be
formed to have input.
The rest of public comment
was in support of having Butler
selected as the permanent superintendent and that the board
should not approve the hiring of
a superintendent search firm.
Goldenberg said the board is
interested in finding the best superintendent for MTPS. The
board approved appointing a superintendent search firm last
week with a 7-2 vote.
Goldenberg felt the search is
still necessary, saying that,
though they might have the best
candidate now, it is best to be sure
they get the most qualified candidate for MTPS.
It is (one of the jobs) we have,
to search for the most qualified
superintendent. And we may
have that, but that is something
that bears examination and looking into, Goldenberg said.
The next BOE meeting will be
on Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the
William Allen Middle School.

made up of various artists in the

community, is there to give the
arts population a voice in town
and help that population grow
stronger together.
We feel like Moorestown is a
hidden New Hope. We have a
tremendous arts population. Wed
like to better identify what that
community looks like and how
we might support them going forward, Sustainable Moorestown
Chair Wolf Skacel said.
Sustainability isnt just about
the environment. Being sustainable, according to Sustainable
Jersey, is empowering communities to build a better world for future generations. This includes
the arts.
There is a quote that really
gets to the nut of why (SMAC) is
so important to a community like
Moorestown. There is an emerging body of knowledge and a host
of case studies that demonstrates
tangible outcomes connecting
with the arts and creativity to
building stronger, economically
vibrant communities. Ultimately,
that is really what we are after,
ensuring that Moorestown re-

mains a strong and vibrant community, Skacel said.

The committee is made up of a
variety of creatives representing
a vast population of the arts community in town. Those individuals and their organizations are:
Hala Al-Shawaf, artist and VP
branch manager at PNC Bank in
Moorestown; Candace Coleman,
artist and MoorArts trustee;
Diane Felcyn, associate director
of Perkins Center for the Arts;
Joe Galbraith, director of the
Moorestown Library; Mark Morgan, producing artistic director of
the Moorestown Theater Company; Toni Paparone, artist and
Moorestown High School art
teacher; Patricia Rowe, fine and
performing arts/technology and
business
supervisor
for
Moorestown Township Public
Schools; Skacel of Sustainable
Moorestown;
and
Georgean
Wardzinski,
president
of
MoorArts. An interesting observation upon the first meeting was
many of these individuals had
never even met before, according
to Skacel, despite being in the
community for years.
In creating the SMAC, these organizations will finally be able to
collaborate with all art populations and create a stronger arts
community with a collective

voice in town.
I think that different organizations serve pockets of the creative community, but for a collective Moorestown arts committee
voice, there is no one really doing
that yet, especially for the individual arts professionals. So we
thought this was the perfect opportunity for all of us to join together to support our people, who
we all serve anyway, but now
were doing it as a collective, Felcyn said.
Art is used very broadly in the
SMAC. It includes everything
from traditional art and music to
graphic design and architecture.
The term for a creative or an
artist is broad as well, from someone who does it as a hobby to
someone who has made a profession out of it.
To get a better idea of the variety of art populations in town, as
well as to see what those individuals would like to accomplish, the
SMAC has created an online survey and will host a public meeting
open to everyone.
The survey, called Moorestown
Creates, was created for an early
census of the people in town who
consider themselves a creative to
identify needs and interests of
what they would like to see happening in Moorestown and what
the SMAC can do for them. The
survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/MoorestownCreates.
The survey is still active, and
we are asking anyone who considers themselves a creative person
in the community to complete the
survey so we can get an even
more accurate understanding of
who is here. Were regularly reviewing the results to see what
are the needs, Felcyn said.
SMACs public meeting will
talk about the survey results and
hopefully start a discussion to
point SMAC in the direction of
what needs to be accomplished
for the arts community. The meeting will be in Town Hall at the
Town Council Chambers on Feb.
24 at 7 p.m.
To learn more information
about the SMAC and to RSVP for
the public meeting, email SustainableMoorestown@moorestow

4 Gladwynne Ter, Moorestown, $649,000

You can be the proud second owner of the expanded Cornell located at the end
of a small cul-de-sac. It is also one of the few homes in Moorestown Hunt to offer
a 3 car garage. The two story foyer is very welcoming and leads to the kitchen
with hard wood floors that have just been refinished along with all of the hard
wood floors in the home. Also, they have just installed brand new white wood
blinds on every window in the house, and they are included!!!!! The large den has
a brick fireplace and also a rear staircase that leads to the freshly carpeted hallway and 4 bedrooms, its brand new!!!!! The best part of the house aside from
being at the end of the cul-de-sac, and having a 3 car garage, is that the back yard
is open to a blank canvas! There is no one behind you, just open space and privacy, in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Moorestown.
