2 Quick Start
2.1 MapView
This chapter gives you a quick introduction of the user interface philosophy and the tasks you'll be
performing. After reading this part you should be able to operate MapView in its main functionality. It is
recommended to learn more about the software by doing.
2.1.1 Starting
After starting MapView by double-clicking the MapView icon on the desktop or by selecting Start>Programs->R&S Ramon->MapView->MapView you'll see the title bar of the main window and below
that the main menues and toolbar of MapView.
By default Openstreetmap is loaded as starting basemap.
TMS/WMS basemaps:
Some of the installed maps like Openstreetmap or GoogleSatellite are online maps serving map tiles via
TMS or WMS server.
Tile Map Service (TMS) and Web Map Service (WMS) is a specification for storing and retrieving
cartographic data.
For further information see http://www.opengeospatial.org
MapView acts as WMS/TMS client, which allows users to request spatially referenced map images from a
TMS/WMS server.
Quick Start 6
To access a WMS/TMS server, you have to specify the server url and tiles path in the
MapView map specification dgml file.
Such dgml files exists for each basemap, e.g. the openstreetmap.dgml located in:
..\mapdata\maps\earth\openstreetmap\openstreetmap.dgml
The openstreetmap TMS server specification for the OSM server:
<downloadUrl protocol="http" host="tile.openstreetmap.org" path="/" />
2.1.2.1 Openstreetmap
MapView supports OpenStreetMap,
a free and editable world map (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page
The street map tiles used in MapView via download are provided by the OpenStreetMap Project ("OSM").
OSM is an open community which creates free editable maps.

2.1.4 Plugins
MapView works with plugins to provide additional functionality, like interfaces to other
applications/systems .
Plugins are subclassified into three categories.
InterfacePlugins:
Used to receives and display new layers and geographical objects which reference to direction
finding and location tasks. The geographic data are received by TcpIp connections.
RenderPlugins:
Used to display additional informations like Scalebar or Compass
RunnerPlugins:
Used to handle additional map data like SRTM Elevation values.
Also used for import file based geographic data like Kml.
Quick Start 11
If render plugins are installed, the MapView <View Widgets> menu contains menu items depending on
the plugins. See section <5.3.2 Widgets> for details.
By default seven render plugins are installed.

openstreetmap ). Depending on map size, scale and zoom level settings, this needs minutes to hours to
finish.
First the Tile creator settings dialog appears
TMS zoom level range are defined from 0 to 18. The MapInfoMapWizard calculates usefull zoom level
values for crunching the loaded map. Use this dialog to change the start and end zoom level to be
created.
Note: the higher the To zoom level is set, the longer time is needed to finish.
MapInfo map 67
Hint:
For first run the suggested zoom level values are ok, use this to start crunching the map. After finished,
verify the result in MapView. If a higher detail level is needed, start crunching the map again and set the
Start zoom level value to previously used To zoom level value, set the To zoom level value higher than
before. Going this way you avoid to create same zoom level map tiles twice.
Because of performance reasons, the MapInfoMapWizard map window is disabled during cache
processing.
The cache processor is running within its own thread, this means, you can go on working with MapView.
A progress bar indicates cache processing state, after finished, a new basemap is created
(refer section 2.1.2 Basemap)
For naming the new basemap, the geoset filename is used, e.g. if your geoset name is World, the new
basemap name is also World.
